HAS “ITS MY BODY” ANY LIMITS?

Strident pro abortion women often use the catch cry: “It’s my body. I can do what I want with it”.

This may be a legal fact in many jurisdictions.

But it’s not always a MORAL FACT.

CAN I ALWAYS DO WHAT I WANT WITH MY OWN BODY?

The short answer is NO.

It is illegal for me to use my body to murder or assault another person.

It is illegal for me to urinate or defecate in public.

It is illegal for me to masturbate in public as Fr Jerry Carey of Killaloe discovered.

It is illegal for me to be naked in public.

It is illegal for me to put certain drugs in my body.

It is illegal for me to smoke tobacco in certain places.

It is illegal for me to drink alcohol in certain public places.

So, the “principle” that I can do what I want with my body does not stand up to scrutiny.

ABORTION

No one can say that a pregnant should not have a great deal of control over her own body and bodily integrity.  Thats a right that all men and women should have.

But nearly always our rights come with obligations.

And in abortion there is:

The rights of the unborn baby.

The rights of the baby’s father.

And for those of us believe there is the moral question and the question of doing or not doing the Will of God.

The “ITS MY BODY” catch cry does not at all do justice to the very serious and complex abortion debate.

288 replies on “HAS “ITS MY BODY” ANY LIMITS?”

12.17: Alvin, this is very confusing. Don’t think you quite know what you want to say. The “it’s my body, I can do what I like with it” is the catchphrase of a very morally deficient generation. All rights come with attendant responsibilities. The pro choice advocates now use the language of “compassion” to justify abortion, yet they won’t admit to the various cruel, painful and dehumanizing ways by which a baby’s life is ended. A generation of people is wading through a collapse of moral integrity and carelessness re: the right to LIFE of the unborn child, driven by a pluralist ethos where we are conditioned to put our own feelings, needs and rights before all others. Thus philosophy ultimately weakens our moral and Christian fibre.

Is contraception still a sin to use? Is every sperm sacred? Just asking. I think a discussion on overpopulation is needed, I am not talking about abortion as a way of doing this. The world is full and perhaps it’s time for a controlled decent? Just wondering what others think.

Like

Yes contraception is still a mortal sin as you are denying a soul the right to life. Billings method is the only method accepted by the RCC. The church turns a blind eye to this in the same way we turn a blind eye to the mortal sin of child sex abuse and the cover ups that occured. The church shouts out loud when it concerns female reproduction as they blame the female eve for causing original sin. It was Adam the male that started the sin when his penis symbolised by the snake became obsessed with eves breast symbolised by the apple.
Justice alitos reason to overthrow roe ruling is due to decline in the domestic supply of infants for adoption. Is he promoting surrogacy ?

I’ve said it, and it’s true. They said when I and my peers were children we should consider “having” sex outside marriage. Where was the church? Lying about the good liturgy facing the people which they had just abolished.
That was what was important to Rome, and to Arundel under Bowen (ready for Cormac to be wheeled in). Not the morale of the young and the young of subsequent generations. Of course by now all women and girls, and most boys, are going to be quivering wrecks, or manic, or both. The world goes through those phases. But the church usually prayed, in previous ages, and the world steadied up.
Oh no the church doesn’t need to pray. Stop “shooting” those who are left holding the baby and stop “shooting” the growing youth. Teach growing youths responsibility to their fellows. The omission of the church to pray was deliberate and its not admitting it is deliberate. Because the immoral clique want eye witnesses ignored. As soon as Arundel started opening “catholic schools”, mass attendances plummeted.

We can’t do as we wish with our bodies without consequence. There are always consequences; some good, some bad.
If I overeat, I grow fat, with all the associated health risks.
If I unguardedly step into the road, I may get run over.
Some of these consequences are more abstract: moral consequences. They exist, too.

Most of the people commenting today with strong anti abortion views will be men who are totally incapable of getting pregnant or having to make such a horrible decision. I always think of the woman caught in the abortion clinic as similar to the woman caught in adultery. Sometimes women are between a rock and a hard place. Many men do not take their responsibilities seriously when they have children. Many women have no support. The state doesn’t care and now the food banks are running out of food. I am a retired woman and very lucky that I have never had to consider an abortion. I have had a very supportive husband for 48 years. Many of my friends haven’t. As far as I know non of my friends have had abortions…. but if they had…. I would be loathe to condemn them.

Sinn Fein Senator Paul Gavan appears to have been insinuating that men can carry and give birth to children during a debate in the Seanad Eireann February this year.
Here’s a quote from Paul …; ‘We look forward to working with him (Minister) in order that we can move the legislation forward as a matter of urgency and give women and pregnant people the protection that they deserve, which is already in place in a number of jurisdictions across the world. We need to deliver that as quickly as possible for our people in this State.’

The abortion industry, as is now happening and growing, is unemotional and unfeeling about the reality of abortion. It is the deliberate destruction of an unborn child. Ryan, in addition to timing, the blog has degenerated into too much “tit for tat” one upmanship, with many arcane “one-liners” making no attempt to either express clearly, or indicate to whom or what they may be responding to. Perhaps it’s the more stupid ones who comment as Anon making it difficult to respond to them. Quite tedious really, so much so that I just scan past many of them.
I also think that +Pat blogging a new subject every day degrades the quality, as does a failure to simply bin the very obvious meaningless crap comments, and to curtail the number of comments from some. Bill Mulvihill for example, had over half of about 90 comments a few weeks ago, many of them arcane one liners adding nothing. He’s one I regularly ignore.

Very decent. For people can be incredibly stupid( not an insult…but it encapsulates what people sometimes do and put themselves in harms way). 3.55: Cathal, I’m glad my child isn’t in your religion class. That you refer students to this imbalanced, filthy, semi pornographic and skewed blog for “alternate” opinion is outrageous. It’s not alternate opinion nor is it material for discussion in your class. It’s a poisonous, venomous anti clerical blog with many comments close to, if not actually, incitement to hatred of priests. Surely you should exercise greater discernment about what you recommend for your pupils? If I knew the school, I’d report you for your irresponsibility to pupils.

Like

Anon@ 5.43 & Martin @ 5:54:
What do you think of the proposition that teaching about religious beliefs should provide pupils with best available information about various belief systems, examine the basis of, and relevant validity of each while taking into account relevant historical, geographical and cultural factors, to lead into pupils understanding the perspectives of their own particular religious belief?
If such an approach was adopted as optimal, would the views expressed in +Pat’s blog be useful as a basis for discussion of the strength of feeling engendered by contrasting religious beliefs?
Please don’t bother to reply if you think that “religion” should only consist of indoctrinating one particular belief system into young children.

All the political parties are just taking the populist opinion instead of growing a back bone like the DUP on this issue.

Like

8.08: MMM: I accept your proposition that pupils should be introduced to the various expressions of faith/religious belief. While most of our schools have a religious ethos, effectively they are secular because the religious education envelops a wide variety of religious traditions, belief systems, cultural rituals etc…Apart from some privately owned Catholic schools, the Religious Education programme is very broad and ecumenical. Though I believe that if a pupil is attending a Catholic school they should at least learn the basics of that faith and its sacred prayers and customs. Sadly, that’s not always the reality. There was a time when we thought we were always going to be only “catholic” but so much has occured in the past 50 years which have brought momentous changes to Irish education. Personally I now believe that a broad curriculum of religious education should be the norm in schools and if parents want a deeper education of Catholic doctrines and teachings for their chikdren, this should happen within the parish community. I think this would go towards challenging those who desire to be truly Catholic. A radical shift is required but I believe this is the next cultural/religious battle: the removal of churches from schools. We have evolved as a society where changes are necessary. If, as a Church, we are reliant on our Catholic schools to produce good Catholics, we’re delusional. It pains me to see that despite the wonderful preparations we do for sacramental moments in the school year that only a minuscule response is given when we invite parents to return the next day with their child to bring them to the community gathered on a Sunday morning for Mass. Last week out of 42 children for 1st communion, only 4 came back on Sunday. Says it all about religious education and about parent’s lack of interest. Pars blog is not a reference point for a child or young person’s education. How could it be with such vicious and nasty rhetoric? Aren’t our children and young people already overexposed to violence, ugliness, bad language, porn, nastiness and bullying?

Like

Thank you Martin. It’s great to receive such an insightful comprehensive response. Much appreciated.
I very much agree that deeper education of Catholic doctrines, or indeed any particular brand of religious belief, should occur outside mainstream educational facilities, as you say, within the parish community where there is parental/pupil choice available to access or otherwise.

I was thinking of ex stigmatic priest outside of Rome whom the Vatican including JPII as a Pope that time. He must have known it but never went near him nor suspended him for sexually abusing seminarians mostly fr9m usa. The nuns were all flocking around him and protected him in some degree or form.
****
It was only when benedict became a Pope when he went on to proceed to defrock that phony stigmatic priest within a month or so of him taking the papal office.
Why didn’t jpiii do something about it? He didn’t do anything on Marciel as well.
*****
I met him once on a side trip to Rome as I found him quite aloof and very cold. The nuns that he founded were flocking around him as it was some spectacle. Mother therese visited him as well re photos on the church wall. That church was built with monies from USA via seminarians families and outside sources.
****
Its bit similar to kirby and silverstream re mystics and money as well. There were some parallels to this.
Him and DMK mystics.
Him and DMK monies.
Its quite telling wheh you go on and look for it re similarities.
It was on the tip of an iceberg re my trip to San vittorino where phony mystic was based there. That was 2005 as rcc had the stranglehold, power, money and politics.
Now more secrets are coming out in steams than 2005 with very little info coming out that time.

Shannon…you said you are a single mother. That’s very admirable in today’s world, although I’m not surprised you’re single as you say you are passionate about things, I’d say aggressive. No man should have an aggressive woman In their lives.
You say you are in a financial position to afford your abortions. I do hope you are not using this practice as a contraceptive. As +Pat can verify, I am a medical professional and if you are using abortion as a contraceptive you really need to be careful as this can lead to severe hormone imbalances as you age thus making you even more passionate (aggressive).
Everyone is allowed to voice their opinions on this platform that pat buckley provides so there is no reason to jump down anyone’s neck because you disagree with them.
In 30 years of practice I have looked after ladies who have had the *my body* attitude. I can assure you. Every single one of them had regret in what they did to themselves. These ladies got pregnant through rape, drugs, prostitution and others were married with too many kids to cope with. EVERY one of them regretted their abortion

A “notable proportion” of the UK and European cases are in gay and bisexual men, health officials have said.
Three cases in Belgium have also been linked to a large-scale fetish festival in Antwerp, according to organisers. The Darklands Festival warned people who attended four days of parties, starting on May 5, that authorities had linked the event to the country’s three confirmed cases.
“There’s reason to assume that the virus has been brought in by visitors from abroad to the festival after recent cases in other countries,” the festival said on its website.
Darklands is a ticketed event that describes itself as a place where “various tribes in the gay fetish community (leather, rubber, army, skinhead, puppies…) come together to create a unique spectacle of fetish brotherhood”.
Sources have told The Telegraph that an internationally advertised gay party in Spain is also being investigated as the root cause of the global monkeypox cases.
In the UK, a link was first drawn between gay men and monkeypox earlier in the week, with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) urging men who have sex with men to be alert to any new rashes or lesions on their body, including their genitalia.
