My dear brother bishop Thomas,
Recently, I have received information from a devout individual about Silverstream Priory and its aberrant founder, Dom Mark Kirby. The credibility of this individual cannot be disputed because the individual has been a benefactor to the community since its establishment. During a recent visit to Silverstream – my source made enquiries into the whereabouts of Dom Kirby.
The individual was told that Dom Kirby had taken a twelve month leave of absence from Silverstream Priory. Is this true or was the individual told a blatant lie by a monk of Silverstream?
So, the purpose of the present is to enquire into the location of Dom Kirby and to unpack the competing narratives that surround his departure from the Priory.
Because Silverstream Priory is an institute of diocesan right – canonical responsibly for the Priory and its members is the sole responsibility of the Ordinary of the Diocese of Meath. And that is you, Bishop Deenihan. It is, of course, a heavy burden for a Cork-born bishop.
It has not been denied that Dom Kirby left Silverstream Priory WITHOUT permission and that he went to the Netherlands accompanied by two novices. It is understood that he may have been present at the Benedictine convent in Tegelen, Limburg in the south-east of Holland. So, my brother bishop, which narrative about the departure from Silverstream is correct? Did Dom Kirby flee or did he request a leave of absence? Are you prepared to tell us where Dom Mark Kirby is resident at the moment? If not; why not?
Did Dom Kirby submit a written petition to you his Ordinary to take a leave of absence from Silverstream Priory for a period of twelve months? If so, did you approve his request in writing? Have you rendered a Decree granting Dom Kirby permission to reside outside Silverstream for the said period of twelve months in accordance with the statutes of Silverstream? Did you consult with the Dom Elijah (the prior of Silverstream with a known addiction to gay pornography) about Dom Kirby’s petition? If so; what was his view?

If, Dom Kirby has fled Silverstream without permission — has a warning being issued ordering him to return to the Priory? If he does not return — are you as the Ordinary of Silverstream Priory minded to begin the process to have Dom Kirby laicised for disobedience?
If you granted permission to Dom Kirby to reside outside the Priory for a period of twelve months the following questions naturally follow.
Did you as the Ordinary grant Dom Kirby a Letter of Good Standing? Is Dom Kirby permitted to present himself as a priest? Is Dom Kirby permitted to publicly celebrate the Eucharist outside Silverstream Priory? Does Dom Kirby have permission to hear confessions? Is Dom Kirby permitted to wear his monastic habit?
I have several priest sources in the Diocese of Meath. One priest was emphatic that Dom Mark Kirby was incardinated into the Diocese of Meath by Decree from the Diocese of Tulsa, by your predecessor in office, Bishop Michael Smith. Is this true?
If so, Dom Kirby remains your responsibility even if he is not listed as a priest of the Diocese of Meath on the Directory on the website, because, I am told a Priory of diocesan right cannot incardinate clerics. And if Dom Kirby gets up to “mischief” the fact he is not listed on the diocesan directory will not save the Diocese of Meath from liability from any tortious act that Kirby may commit.
When it came to the decision-making about Dom Kirby and his leave of absence, did you consult your go to canonist, Abbot Brendan Coffey of Glenstal? This is the same Abbot Coffey who decided to appoint the disgraced Abbot Richard Purcell (with his proclivity to visit houses of gay ill-repute in Dublin) to the visitation of Silverstream that you ordered because of Purcell’s purported knowledge of monastic finances, so I am told by another one of your priests in Meath.
But a canon lawyer tells me that Abbot Brendan’s knowledge of canon law is weak and that he really should stick to liturgy the subject of his PhD. He also tells me that Abbot Brendan is not particularly well-liked as Abbot of Glenstal and that community regret electing him and that it is possible he will be a one-term abbot.
In light of the known allegations that have been made about Dom Kirby, have you my brother Bishop Thomas, alerted the Ordinary where Dom Kirby is currently residing to apprise him in writing of these allegations? Has the ordinary responded and is he content for Dom Kirby to be resident within his canonical territory?
As we journey towards to the great feast of Pentecost may the Holy Spirit inspire you, now and always.
Your brother bishop,
+Pat.

Dom Elijah Carroll, OSB, Prior of Silverstream Priory.

+Pat, this is a very provocative blog. It is the first time (I think) you have suggested that Kirby could potentially be laicised. He is on very thin ice if he has left Silverstream without Deenihan’s permission as it may give Deenihan the grounds he needs to laicise Kirby if he does not return ASAP. Silverstream is a scandal. Deenihan’s indifference to known misconduct is also a scandal. If all the allegations that have been made about Kirby on this blog are true (and I believe they are) then both Kirby and Purcell should be laicised because they have bought the priesthood and the monastic life into disrepute. Silverstream needs to be suppressed immediately.

And surely Deenihan should be laicized for the same reason in that case?
Even if Kirby were to go AWOL and give the grounds, I feel like probably no bishop would actually start the process, just to spite Pat Buckley 😂

If the monks of Silverstream are lying to benefactors and that becomes public knowledge then the place is finished as people hate this kind of duplicity and utter hypocrisy. Silverstream will wither I hope on the vine sooner rather than later due to its own deceit.
That would suit Deenihan, because if the place closes due to cash flow issues then he avoids the messy business of suppression. He might be inconvenienced having to contact monasteries that might be open to taking some of the people who are in solemn vows. Those in simple vows can be dispensed and the novices can be dismissed. Then the property will revert to the diocese, where it can be sold to developers for a handsome profit. The sooner that happens the better.

Why do you think so many people in Ireland and abroad contact Bishop Buckley’s ministry?
I have no doubt for many its due to their own Priests and Bishops not having been shepherds, don’t want to know and have shunned or gaslighted people for various reasons. If Bishops in the Catholic Church were genuinely concerned for the welfare and salvation of souls, as well as the good of the Church, they would contact Bishop Buckley, particularly when scandals erupt, rather than be so pastorally negligent, imprudent, irresponsible, and even grossly incompetent shepherds. Many are most likely immature people if the behaviour of so many Priests regularly highlighted on this blog is anything to go by.

The Constitutions of the Benedictine Congregation of the Annunciation of which Glenstal Abbey is a constituent abbey clearly specify that the term of office for an abbot is eight years. Abbot Brendan Coffey was elected abbot of Glenstal Abbey in 2016; he is up for re-election in 2024. Being elected to a position of authority within the congregation at a General Chapter is not the same as being elected abbot of your abbey.

Abbot Coffey sees himself as some kind of “ecclesiastical fixer”. It is strongly suspected that he did not act impartially or objectively during the visitation of Ampleforth Abbey. This led to the Abbot Cuthbert Madden issuing legal proceedings. I do wonder if Coffey was serving the agenda of the Abbot President of the English Benedictine Congregation?
Christopher Jamison, who was rather zealous in his persecution of Abbot Madden. But when he was Abbot of Worth Abbey he turned a blind and let Fr Andrew Brenninkmeyer to reside outside the monastery and do what he like with impunity. Jamison who was the national director for vocations in the UK when he was the Ordinary of Worth could have begun the canonical process to have Brenninkmeyer laicised.
Coffey should not be trusted under any circumstances. The lesson from Silverstream is never let Coffey have any involvement under any circumstances in the internal life of the community no matter its dysfunctionality, because Coffey will make a bad situation worse.
LikeLike
Actually you’re missing a trick. The lesson of the past few decades is never trust a Roman Catholic cleric under any circumstances, and assume the laity are in collusion unless you know for certain they’re an ignorant dupe.

It also seems like Brenninkmeyer worked as a priest in the diocese of Charleston, all the while being listed as c/o Worth Abbey.
However this page on this blog states he became a diocesan priest:
https://bishoppatbuckley.blog/2021/12/07/the-unresolved-accusations-at-the-benedictine-worth-abbey/#comments
Either way you wonder what the diocese and people of Charleston were told about his track record or else it may have been one of those church exercises in creating confusion.
The online commentary around IICSA was that there was clearly a lot of shit they didn’t uncover in the EBC, but I really don’t think the state should be forced to regulate a rogue religious body beyond the role it has in law of prosecution etc.
The EBC should clearly have been suppressed at least 20 years ago however it’s a bit hard to know what should happen to the communities instead because mark my words there are headlines coming for the English province of the Subiaco Cassinese congregation.

And you are right. Also not listed are Fr Benedict Andersen and Fr Houser. Andersen was ordained a deacon and a priest by Bishop Smith so he is a priest of Meath. But the status of Fr Houser is unclear. An online search indicates Houser was ordained by Archbishop Burke when he was the archbishop of St Louis in 2008. Then he was Burke’s secretary for a period in Rome. What possessed him to become a monk of Silverstream is beyond me but the diocese of his incardination it is not clear. He is not listed as a priest of Meath and he does not show up in the current list of priests incardinated in the Archdiocese of St Louis.

Catholic, and if one likes Roman Catholic for it is very much Roman and Catholic in its focus, and interesting as the Mass ordinary appears to pre-Gregorian. None of these Ortho Latin Rite parishes can even manage Latin, whether Roman Rite or Sarum and have to use BCP derived Anglican translations (and nearly always have ex-Anglican congregations). The Cumdach is a startling survival too, obviously helped by being well hidden by the owners of Lackeen castle.
Yes, Fr Hunwicke is interesting, but appears to ride a ‘heretic pope’ hobbyhorse, so Pope Honorius is supposedly one, contrary to the very words of Pope St Leo II in a dogmatic letter to Eastern Roman Emperor Constantine IV (see Ott et al.). The idea is supposedly that Honorius was one, and others, so Pope Francis as heretic (more than strongly implied in what Fr Hunwicke writes), therefore raises no issue.

No Catholic would disagree with that, but there has to be a manager on earth, hence the Roman Pontiff and his bishops. The Church of Ireland is headed ultimately on earth by Queen of England.

6:40pm what do you expect this blog to do about it Maria? Has your Bishop advised you why his priest does not wish to engage with you? He is certainly behaving as if you are making life difficult for him somehow or maybe he is like Fr Ger Fitzgerald in Killaloe who is very forward in initiating relationships with female parishioners but as we read in cases of Yvonne & Carole he is very lacking in the mature adult department when things run their natural course as is often the case when one party to a relationship is irretrievably dysfunctional as in a priest who has made a vow of celibacy but actively pursues & engages in sexual relationships with vulnerable parishioners. You certainly appear to be making your priest uncomfortable in some way.

On this Sunday evening, if people could pray one decade of the rosary, it will help make the world a better place. Today is Glorious! 🙏
On this World Communications Day, may we all who are followers of Christ, reflect on how we can help to spread the gospel message. For the first 21 days of June, we will journey to the Summer Solstice with the 21 Chapters of the Gospel of John.
May the divine assistance remain always with us.
And may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Guardian reader at 5pm:
‘Pope Francis would have a problem if a cardinal is gay.’
If you read more critically you would notice that the entire MO of the church is to say one thing and do another, and wouldn’t believe the article you link.
It’s like the clergy are celibate and the church is bothered about children and their safety. Even the pretending to be against abortion pose is just that and nothing else.
In the journey into realizing the truth about the church we all pass through a stage where we think there are parts of the church where actions and words coincide. To avoid repeat disappointment it’s better to realize they don’t.

Fantastic to see Francis sending out barely disguised messages in his recent appointment of cardinals. McElroy, as far as RC bishops go, is a sane and nuanced individual, an educated and thinking man, so the message in appointing. him rather than the like of Gomez of LA or Cordileone of SF is pretty clear. Not that they will get the message, so set are they in their culture wars, hard right, self-righteous Catholicism. I question the elevation of CockRoche however but I guess it was inevitable. Nichols will be furious, I suspect. Competition. Bully Boy Wilson in Southwark is probably licking his wounds after the shambles about the gay author being banned from one of his schools, and the strike by teachers there, and the intervention of unions and others to find a sensible resolution, which he could not provide. These idiot bishops who get up and grandstand. They show themselves to be thick, lacking sophistication and sense. What a crowd. Mind you, what do you expect to come out of our seminaries, such mediocre and lacking places which do not equip priests for the real world, but rather bolster a sense of self-importance ?

Orthodox Catholic is used by those of us who appreciate the ancient Roman Catholic tradition. I find that former Protestants favor the term Orthodox Christian.
What’s wrong with Right-worshipping combined with Universal? The Canon Missae plays with these terms too.
LikeLike
Orthodox in capital letters usually means Eastern Orthodox, traditionally defined as schismatic now usually ‘separated’, while Orthodox Catholic is more usually a rarer variant of Greek Rite Catholic, Uniate, Byzantine. It is no harm to anyone to vary the terms on a personal basis, but publicly words usually mean what most take them to mean; English has no Académie française. Peace.
