FARRELL – HIS COUSIN LEDWITH – MAYNOOTH.

THE BACKGROUND

The Catholic Church has admitted that the former President of St Patrick’s College Maynooth, Monsignor Micheál Ledwith, made a private settlement with a minor who claimed he had sexually abused him.

Ledwith

Dr Ledwith subsequently resigned with a substantial top-up to his pension and is now teaching in California. He has consistently denied the allegation and a subsequent one by a former student at the college.

The retirement of Dr Ledwith from the Presidency of Maynooth in June 1994 was a surprise. He had served for nine years, had written the history of the College, and was about to lead its bicentennial celebrations.

Within months, RTÉ News told a college spokesman we had been informed an allegation of abuse had been made against the former President, but this was flatly dismissed as a reason for his departure.

But now the current President of the College, Monsignor Dermot Farrell, and the Bishops who act as trustees, have issued a statement which tells a fuller story.

The statement says that prior to his retirement, an allegation pertaining to sexual abuse of a minor was made against Monsignor Ledwith. He was informed of the allegation and denied it strenuously.

His Bishop – Brendan Comiskey – told both the Gardaí and relevant Health Board.

Comiskey

The college trustees began a process of investigation but about a year later their former President made a private legal settlement with the claimant without admitting any liability. This settlement included a confidentiality clause.

The college says that neither it nor the Church were involved in any way and had nothing whatsoever to do with this agreement, but that the confidentiality clause impeded its investigations because the vital evidence of the complainant would not be available.

Nevertheless, the trustees continued to pursue the investigation process.

And ultimately in 1996 Monsignor Ledwith resigned from the personal professorship on the basis that he receive an appropriate pension. He got a pension top-up of about £100,000.

Later, the trustees were informed of another allegation of abuse by solicitors on behalf of a former student of the college between 1992 and 1994. Monsignor Ledwith vehemently denied it saying he was not even in the country at the time of the alleged abuse.

Since his retirement, Monsignor Ledwith has lived mostly in the USA where he now teaches in California’s Ramtha’s School of Enlightenment.

90 MINUTE TALK BY LEDWITH ON HIS NEW INSIGHTS INTO JESUS

Here Ledwith talks about the time Jesus spent in India and Egypt?

PAT SAYS

I believe that the bishops and Farrell knew a lot more about the Ledwith affair than they have ever admitted.

And Ledwith was Farrell’s cousin!

It was also contended that the bishops gave Ledwith 300,000 not 100,000.

EAMON CASEY was involved – on Ledwith’s side.

The Maynooth Dean at the time – Fr   Gerard Mc Ginnity was very badly treated by Casey and by O’Fiaich because he was the whistle blower and Ledwith was in line for a mitre.

Fatrell’s Ossory mitre was a reward for handling the Ledwith cock up.

Dublin was a further reward.

You mean the church don’t like other people beating them to their own favorite trick?

Absolutely, guilt by association with your cousin is wrong. On the other hand if they both happened to be clerics that would really suggest guilt!

Patrick, even for someone like you this is pathetic. Undoubtedly Ledwith was a villain who hid in plain sight and abused his position for nefarious purposes, sadly this only emerged late in the day. To attempt to embroil Dermot Farrell in the affair by some guilt by association theory is to say the least disingenuous on your part. Farnell himself has a personal history without blemish, and I challenge anybody to prove otherwise. His familial relationship with Ledwith is accidental and has no bearing on the facts. It is a pathetic effort on your part to smear the man, and it stinks. The poor man you mention who was Dean at that time is now “spiritual advisor” to the charlatan Christine Gallagher, the seer ( and millionaire) of Achill’s House of prayer. He hasn’t been well for years.
Despite Ledwit’h’s deception he did not succeed in being promoted to bishop and is ending his days in the theological wasteland. Seems the Holy Spirit had some part to play in that.
DF on the other hand is leading Dublin with courage and determination worthy of all our support. So Patrick, stop the childish rants and leave a good man alone so that he may do the Lord’s work without your tiresome attempts to smear his good name.
Pax et bonus.

Pat is making the point that Farrell was appointed to a new and only ever occupied once position of ‘executive assistant to the president’ which is nepotism. Farrell gained a benefit by being ledwiths cousin. Secondly given his position he, in all likelihood, knew of the going-ons but remained silent. Thirdly, Farrell assisted in keeping all records of ledwiths time in Maynooth under wraps while president himself.
None are definitive statements damning Farrell, but are rather collectively painting a possible picture of a man deeply involved in the ledwith scandal.

Like

Pat, I think it’s unfair to label somebody because of their family. Critique the man based on his individual merits. Goodness, if we were all judged based on what someone in our family did or didn’t do, we would never leave home. Your thinking is like the people I heard as a child in Ireland, ‘don’t have anything to do with him. His sister went off with a married man […] his uncle committed suicide, no wonder he’s cracked.’ So it went on, and lives were ruined.

4.24 and 7.42: You both make intelligent, honest comments and observations re: Pat making a misguided judgment about Archbishop Farrell. It is regrettable that Pat cannot be respectful and mature to refer to him as Dermot Farrell not DLF…this approach is abusive and bullying. It is morally reprehensible that Pat is deliberately teasing, denigrating and mocking Archbishop Farrell on “guilt by asdociation”. Even more sinister is the pathetic attempts by Pat to suggest that DF is unsuitable to be AB. Pat, give more validatable evidence to strengthen your judgments, suspicions and premise of your contentions that “he’s up to his neck in it”…Proof, dear Pat, proof.

Like

300,000 punts was a lot of money at the time and Ledwith will have had a big salary as president of Maynooth, especially in the days when the clerical president of Maynooth was head of the civil university as well as the seminary and pontifical university.

Like

They’re not. At this point it can go one of two ways.
The church will continue its current denial and evasion strategy which will be successful until the church folds if there are no HUGE scandals. Since the police started raiding chanceries in Belgium I doubt there are any surprises left in diocesan records.
On the other hand if any scandal of any sort explodes again it could turn very interesting. My bet would be on it being financial but there’s still possibly historical abuse to come out. Given that paedophiles like hiding in plain sight there is likely to be current clerical paedophilia going on as well.
I doubt any legislation changes would be aimed at the church of Rome specifically, unfortunately.

Firstly, Bishop Pat is not suggesting guilt by association because of the innocent fact that they are ‘cousins’. He is however suggesting guilt by way of his connections to Maynooth and the subsequent cover-up.
Nepotism: It is no secret that Michael Ledwith brought Dermot Farrell to Maynooth. He was his PERSONAL private secretary. The suggestion that he knew nothing is ludicrous! Everyone in Maynooth knew about it.
There was a wall of silence regarding the matter. Farrell was forced to release a public statement once they could no longer cover up the matter. Questions need to be asked regarding the money – why did Michael Ledwith get between 100/300k on top of his already flush Maynooth pension? This happened under the watch of Dermot Farrell as president of Maynooth. What was the money used for? Was it used to pay off the victims?
Yes, legitimate questions remain over Dermot Farrell and his handling of the situation. Why was he involved at all given his familial connection to Ledwith? What about the victims? Did Farrell show them care? His cousin Ledwith got all the help and support he needed to restart his life. The victims however were left to pick up the pieces and were silenced for their troubles.

Priests in solidum are to be appointed or installed according to the norm of the prescripts of cann. 522 and 524; and so like a PP enjoy stability of office.

Can. 543 §1. If the pastoral care of some parish or of different parishes together is entrusted to priests in solidum, each of them is obliged to perform the tasks and functions of pastor mentioned in cann. 528, 529, and 530 according to the arrangement they establish. All of them have the faculty of assisting at marriages and all the powers to dispense granted to a pastor by law; these are to be exercised, however, under the direction of the moderator.
§2. All the priests who belong to the group:
1/ are bound by the obligation of residence;

They don’t have the same rights as PP’s precisely because the right of tenure is not mentioned. It applies only to PP’s.

Several priests assume the singular office of parish priest jointly. They have all the rights and duties of a parish priest but one of them acts as a moderator of their joint pastoral exercise.

On this Tuesday, the final day of May, it offers an opportunity for people to pray a decade of the Rosary. Help make the world a better place. Today it is Sorrowful.
Thank you +Pat for allowing my prayerful comments!
ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL
Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle,
be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil;
may God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God, cast into hell
Satan and all the evil spirits
who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen. 🙏

Ledwith had been viceditector to Walter Kasper at a synod of bishops. He could eventually have been appointed cardinal and head of a dicastery.

The one thing that is never mentioned…. was Dermot Farrell placed into his early assertion because he was one of Ledwith’s victims?
