HAS MAYO CURATE – ORDAINED SEPTEMBER 2020 – DISAPPEARED AMID RUMOURS OF GRINDR AND DRUG USE?

PAT SAYS

Here we have another 20 months ordained priest falling by the wayside.

Obviously gay.

Conservative.

Tridentine Mass.

Tridentine vestments.

Another very sad occurance.

Sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular are creating a massive scandal for the RCC.

They condemn homosexuality as disordered and sinful and yet many, if not most, bishops and priests are gay and sexually active!

This situation is absolutely dysfunctional and also absolutely inauthentic.

I hope Fr Henry sorts himself out quickly.

But the RCC will never sort itself out until forced to.

It appears that Fr Henry was trying to change his “life direction”. Perhaps it would have been better had he gotten his laicisation papers in before putting his face all over a gay dating app.

Like

Correct; meant to say that if he desires a “changed life” he should have done the honest thing and applied to be laicised.

Like

Patsy I would like to point out that the picture of the degenerate O’Connell in the Barr Convent Chapel was not traditional. He is standing in front of a Cranmer table, not an Altar. He did have on a decent chasuble but no maniple so he was ‘performing’ a novus ordo not celebrating a Tridentine Mass. You forgot to mention all the modern liberal elite’s who more than outnumber trads in that lifestyle like Ledwith, McCamely,McCarrick,Burrell,Sheheen Sodano,Cocopalmario etc.etc. all of them Ultra modernists.

He was ordained for the Oratorians in York in August 2021 but straightaway shipped over Ireland.

Like

No connection, excep that the COs wanted rid of Henry and Henry/Ciaran wanted a posting to a pretty seaside town in which to undertake his self-discovery. The wants, needs and preferences of the parishoners did not come into it.

Like

Of all orders out there it is The Oratorian’s that raise my eye brow the most… and send a shiver down my spine. I’d rather spend an evening with a Norbertine than an Oratorian… and that says a lot.

Like

Dear parishioner, what you are to do is face the reality that the church you belong to is pretend and you are being fleeced. After the child abuse did you seriously think anything else was as it’s pretended to be?

Like

I thought candidates were rigorously screened by religious formators and independent clinical psychological practitioners? How do these blokes pass the interviews? They lie, I assume.
The Catholic Church’s ‘don’t-ask-don’t-tell’ culture encourages men to live double-lives. The Church will not accept
this, even though it is obvious to everyone else.

Like

The Mickey Mouse outfit in Manchester carries out our psychological screening. It’s been going on for 15 years now and yet repeated failures—time to close the place down and hand the task to professionals.

Like

+ Pat. Surely the major issue here isn’t that Henry O’Connell is a homosexual but that he is the style of homosexual who uses Grindr, and is reportedly a cocaine user (which to me indicates that he also has an alcohol problem) – you can see why the Oratorians offloaded him to Eire.

Like

It does sound like an offloading doesn’t it, but so quickly after ordination sounds like a quid pro quo or possibly just a threat if he wasn’t ordained. I wonder what else is going on in the York oratory 😂

Like

Just been out to visit a very sick parishioner and looked at the blog. Now I’m sick(ened.). But I won’t write this priest off in this evidence alone. He has discovered a new direction to give his life. I agree that he should have waited some time after he was laicised or left the priesthood before engaging with grinder. He seems to have changed his appearance and demeanour to look more physically attractive. I hope he seeks some counselling to help him deal with the fall out of this reality for himself. His predicament asks questions yet again about celibacy, gay men in priesthood and sexuality in general. I pray this priest will find his contentment through a committed relationship and that he avoids any potential scandal. God bless his family and all who are concerned for him. I am loathe to cast stones but he heeds urgently to make transparent and responsible decision about his “new life”. May God guide him wisely.

Like

I agree. Serious questions need to be asked about celibacy, priesthood, sexuality, and also seminary formation. Surely seminary is the place to discern ones life direction? I think too much credence is given to psychological assessments. What is going on in seminaries that formators seem unaware of the unsuitability of so many candidates to Priesthood?

Like

Oh for Gods sake!
Is seminary now a glorified brothel with ordination as a form of payment for services rendered?

Like

Now that the formators, bishops and vocations directors are gay, why would they turn away a gay candidate? They would think that discriminatory (and they would also be attracted to the candidate and that attraction will influence their thinking.
Full blown, ocean-going gays such as Alex Balzanella of Westminster and Chris Butler (the civil partnership man, Leeds) get ordained no problem. Almost all the recent departures have discovered in their late 20s and early 30s that they are, in fact, gay.

I agree with you NO one should be written off as I believe in a God of LOVE.
What I disagree with is the amount of clergy who are not sticking to their vows and frightened Bishops who do not take action.
I suppose this blog applauds Father Henry O’ Connor for moving on if that was only the case they do not resign and want paid so the Bishop then needs to take a Canonical trial which is very expensive for a Dioceses no matter the size of the dioceses.
Ger and Jerry another two know surely they cannot go to a parish and yet Killaloe still has to give them their salary.
It is NOT the Dioceses or the Bishop that has to provide and pay their salary and accommodation it is the LAITY that pays.
Maybe he will end up in one of the Latin Mass Brigade organisations.

Like

@ 10:15am

There is no way he’ll end up in a traditional Order, he should be dismissed immediately and if not he’s more likely to join with his cohort the disgusting James Martin. I’m sure they’ll get on very well.

Like

Pat,
His name is Ciaran O’Connell. He was a Dublin seminarian in the past. He was kicked from Maynooth for alcoholism and homosexual behaviour. He changed his name to Henry O’Connell in the oratory. A trad priest who strongly dislikes women being involved in Church. The York Oratory wanted rid of him and Tuam took him. The guy has always been troubled. A very disturbed individual who is bitchy, self righteous and who thinks very highly of himself. It does not surprise me that this scandal happened.
The Archdiocese of Dublin, Maynooth, The York Oratory and the Archdiocese of Tuam are responsible for this!

Like

I think between 2010/2012. The class of Fr. Chris Derwin, Fr. Brendan Kealy, Fr. Seamus McEntee (All Dublin).

He has done no harm. He’s a young man exploring his sexuality and experimenting with drugs. He aspired to be celibate and that is not working out for him. He should go and train as a psychotherapist. I suggest he chats with Tony Rice, psychotherapist who at one stage was a redemptorist priest and former Vocations director.

I imagine that he firstly needs to engage in psychotherapy as a client. If he does this seriously it will the making of him.

Ciaran or Henry or whatever he’s calling himself these days is addicted to the gravy train so won’t go off payroll. No doubt & knowing the modus operandi of RCC Mafia Institution, him changing his Christian name is linked to evasion of some description. Yet another danger to society in collar & skirt.

My granny used always say ‘It’s the pious craw thumpers you have to watch.” These guys who love Tridentine frillies and dressing up in birettas and capes are usually pastoral drones with no ability to connect with real people and their real life struggles.
They wear this paraphernalia as a kind of comfort blanket, preach tough dogmatic homilies laying down the law for mere lay folk and are of little use to anybody.
Sadly this conservative veneer had proven in several cases to be just that – a veneer. Beneath is often a conflicted soul with its own real life struggles hidden from view. This struggle often centers on sexual immaturity and unresolved sexual identity. The tridentine frillies have a strange appeal to these men.
Life based on these things endure and when the make-up is off, so-to-speak, lusty nature has its way and scandal follows. I use grindr all the time but only for my coffee beans in the morning.
Personally I blame the screening process that allows these guys forward for ordination when they are patently unsuitable. Dublin has a handful of these bods.
I bet every diocese in the country has a few.

It makes a change to see a tradionally attired priest on the blog. The usual blogs stars (Rory, McCamley, ex-PP of Pomeroy, the Beach Boy) are firmly in the Novus Ordo, floaty katftan chasuble camp.

Yes, I’m a bit confused about the time line here. Was he part of the York Oratory at some stage ? The silly getup and hat would suggest so. Isn’t that where the ex-Provost of Oxford ended up after his disappearance from the Oxford Oratory ? Daniel, who has miraculously reappeared doing cooking lessons and children’s’ activities, and making cringe inducing hyper active videos of same ? So, did this Henry chap leave York and then end up being ordained for an Irish diocese ? Then doing a runner / life change twenty months later ? Classic. A bit quick perhaps, but we know already that so many newly ordained don’t last the course past five years, don’t we ? Well, he’s had a bit of a free ride no doubt for the last number of years in seminary and training. Now he will discover the realities of life outside the cosseted world of the clergy. Like having to pay his own bills, and make a living. Good luck to him ! I don’t doubt he will find it hard, and perhaps come back with his tail between his legs !! I’m sure there will be a well heeled gay benefactor / partner that he can tap in the meantime. I think he’s taken himself and everybody else for a ride. What I am surprised at is that there isn’t a more discerning and wise eye in seminaries and dioceses looking out for guys who are patently playing a game and unsuitable for priesthood. I bet the signs were clearly there over the years he was in training. Why did nobody intervene ? Could have saved everybody a lot of trouble, time and money. Just saying…..

Like

Presumably, “Changed Life” is his Grindr name. He is attractive, but he shouldn’t have wasted everybody’s time going through becoming a priest. But what’s done is done; it’s no use crying over spilt milk. I just hope he gives back all his ordination gifts, including the cash ones. It’s the least he can do.

Like

He was a member of the new Oratory in formation in York but lived at the Oxford Oratory whilst studying at Blackfriars. His priestly formation was inadequate. Was he doing coke and casual gay sex whilst living with the Oxford fathers? Something went wrong because shortly after ordination, he left the Oratorians and headed back to his native Ireland. Was Billy Bunter Byrne the provost of Oxford when Henry lived there?

Like

How interesting. He’s gone hardcore from the lace to the leather tribe. Well done for leaving and coming out. Shame the others have the courage to walk. Must be some worried fathers fearful of him talking.

Like

Another scandal from the Trad world. Surprise! Surprise! Surprise! “Father” O’Connell with his acknowledged identification with the “leather tribe” eloquently illustrates the known rule of thumb that those who have a proclivity for wearing lace as they celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass in the private lives are often the most dysfunctional clerics.

All the English Oratories are hotbeds of homosexuality and house clerical misfits. Is it any surprise given their antecedence – Faber and Newman were both vicious old queens who despised each other.

As no formal announcement has been made, it suggests that Fr Henry O’Connell is still on payroll. Bishop is being blatantly Disrespectful to parishioners that Bishop has made no announcement. Arrogant outfit.

Like

There aren’t usually any announcements by bishops when priests leave, though in the recent Waterford & Lismore clerical changes press release, Fonzie disgracefullly referred to Fr Richard Geoghegan’s liacisation request.

Like

9:30am that’s always a useful indicator to identify those being mollycoddled by Bishops & those outside circle are humiliated at every given opportunity in line with whatever happens to be the required Agenda of hiding truth behind what goes on. No wonder Fonzie & Rawhide Purcell etc., stick together like glue.

Like

Will Fonzie tell the faithful the current status of those MIA, those on early retirement (fit as fiddles) those gone but not forgotten such as the priest at the centre of a major AIDS scare controversy in Dungarvan in the mid 1990s. How many are the faithful still funding?
Can we have full accountability and transparency since a new precedent has been set.

Liked by 1 person

Phonsie had it in for Richard Geoghegan. There is a number of men in W&L who left the Priesthood while Michael Russell and William Lee were bishops and nothing was said. There is a few priests who were ordained by the same two men who are no longer working as priests and many people don’t even know if they are still priests or not. It appears from the W&L website that once a priest retires or is forced to step down for whatever reason, they are forgotten about. They are about the only diocese that do not list retired priests or even permanent deacons, telling people what parishes they work in. To some in the diocese it makes them look as if they are not wanted anymore.

Like

Why did Bishop Cullinan make any reference whatsoever to Fr. Richard Geoghegan. Was it virtue signalling to the Opus Dei brigade or a warning shot to priests of the diocese or both? It smacks of nastiness considering the Dom Dick diocesan scandal lasted over two years.

Like

9:01 Spot on. The “canon fodder” who had the misfortune to be involved with Fitzgerald will NEVER be silenced and if deemed necessary will take further steps in order to ensure that his actions including alleged misappropriation of funds and preying on vulnerable individuals in order to satisfy his sexual, emotional and financial needs while still a PRIEST in Ministry and on “SABBATICAL” will be exposed to a wider audience outside of this blog for all to scrutinise. As the commenter at 8.02 am remarks this is nothing new in this story. It is almost a cliche but it is accepted that younger clergy are sexually active/in relationships with fellow priests and are also sexually active whatever tickles their fancy utilising various online apps that facilitate that reality.

For these men the priesthood is nothing more than a form of cosplay. It gives them an excuse to dress up, it provides them with accommodation and an income which is actually quite generous as often their other overheads are underwritten by the parish. These men are parasites.

If Fr O’Connell has petitioned to be laicised then I commend his integrity because he is actually being honest with himself. If not he is just another duplicitous hypocrite who has been rightly exposed by Pat Buckley and his blog.

Like

If he has “changed direction”, why will he petition to be laicised? Indeed that still gives them some power over him, which he now refutes. If he is still in receipt of church funds, then that’s a different matter.

Like

Yes, the state of mind of these people is that their ordination was ‘a nothIng’. They soon abandon the faith, any notion of a stupid ontological change, and look back on their time with the church as an embarrassment. They will never engage in a process to seek laicisation as they walk away from it. Hence the procedure to dismiss them after five years of absence.

I wonder how the many past commentators who derisively referred to ex-seminarians as “not good enough”, or “rejects” can explain how this fellow managed to ‘get through’ their supposedly stringent “formation & screening” processes? It can’t be very effective in determining the unsuitable if ‘O Connell can con it.
But maybe there are unspoken reasons operating in the selection process?
Personally I think many of those critics using terms like “rejects” are clerics demonstrating their insecurities inferring that having been ordained they are a superior class of “ontologically changed” paragons: though many might say PARASITES.

Ciaran was a Fianna Fáil activist in Balllyfermit who had to be gotten rid of because he was worrying young men. While in Maynooth he went in his holidays to Rome to stay at the Irish College. There is no scandal as such. Ciaran/ Henry has left the ministry. He is getting on with his life as a layman, who is now in a position to be open about his sexual orientation. I imagine he has petitioned for dispensation from the obligations of the clerical state. As he is not a priest of the diocese of Tuam, it will have to be processed by the institute he is incardinated into, the oratory of St Philip Neri. Yes he was ordained to the priesthood last August, arriving in Tuam last October.
It is for the best

Like

1.18 pm, you must live in a parallel universe to claim there is no scandal. Many of us are dismayed by the formation system that ordained a man like this, especially given the warning signs. Of course, we are expected to foot the bill for all this.

Like

You only get to make that comment if you contribute financially to the church. If not it is none of your business.

Like

I have contributed financially to the Church for over sixty plus years. At a time when the cost of living is going through the roof the laity are expected to continue funding their local parish and diocese. How can the formation system be financially sustainable when so many young men leave the priesthood so soon after ordination. A root and branch examination of formation is badly needed. What are the cost implications of educating a seminarian to ordination?

2:27pm Everyone on this Blog has now heard it from the horses mouth, only people with money are entitled to have any say in the Roman Catholic Church. That cuts both ways, people who do not attend Mass are none of your business either so why are you so irrationally obsessed with them or is it the “reason” they left Church you are concerned will be revealed, Father? Whether you like it or not, Free Speech and the right to defend oneself from abusive authoritarian forces or indeed anyone abusive is the right of all persons across the world.

You miss the valid point being made by 2.27 and your attempt deliberately to misinterpret him/her as a diversionary tactic cuts no ice. It is inconvruous for a non-benefactor to dictate how resources should be spent. It lends authenticity and integrity whensome who invests in a venture expresses a view on the object of their generosity.

Why are you all so stupid?
Even if he has applied for laicization the fact he is advertising his sexual services on Grindr means he doesn’t hold a Catholic view of sexuality. What does that say about a man in ministry and particularly in a set up like the oratory?
What does it say about his personal integrity?
What does it say about his attitude to the orders he received in a church which says the gay lifestyle is wrong and men with enduring homosexual orientation should not be ordained?

Now you’re all going to be really kind and try to minimize all these things to wriggle out of this problem, and thus confirm the point I’m making.

@2.52

I think there is room for kindness.

He probably assented to the Church’s teaching on sexuality during his formation. The problem is that he did not come to terms with his sexuality before his priestly studies. Consequently, he has had a crisis of faith and sexuality after his ordination.

His formators have set him up to fail. They should only accept men who know who they are, have accepted their sexuality, and who are at peace in themselves. If the Church continues to ordain psychosexually immature men, then it is inevitable that priests will have crises of sexuality in their 20s and 30s or even older.

The solution is to be nice to gay people. Gay people grow up as social pariahs. If the world were kinder to them, then they would be less mentally fucked up and less of them would bring their emotional baggage with them into the priesthood. The Church is to blame for this on account of their ‘don’t-ask-don’t-tell’ attitude to homosexuality.

Your first error is to assume there is a ‘catholic view of sexuality’ like a monolithic phenomenon. There are as many views on sexuality among Catholic theologians as there are among the wider community.
Secondly, sexual moral theology is developing at a pace with developments in psychology, biological ethics and philosophy.

Would there be many priests in Ireland who wear Tridentine vestments. In nearly 50 years I have seen ONE priest celebrate mass in them and that was a priest who was possibly in his 80’s at the time and is dead now about 10 years or more. From photo’s I’ve seen on your blog Pat many of the younger priests are wearing them. They surly are not seeing priests they know growing up wearing them. Is it someone in the seminaries in Maynooth or maybe more over in Rome that are getting these men to wear them.

I don’t know what you’re on about. Of all the factions in the Church, the trads probably have the worst taste of all. In my experience, trads are not intellectually, culturally, or aesthetically sophisticated people. As a university graduate, I found it very difficult to get along with trads. They were just so stupid and uncouth. I don’t miss their gaudy hammer-horror cosplay liturgies.

Where to begin. There is no need to use the word “suspicion”. Typical of the uneducated Catholic in Northern Ireland today is what you have indicated you would have happen: turn a blind eye to clerics, but whistleblowers should be punished. Shame on you; go find a moral compass. And then go back under the rock from where you crawled.

Many a person has been harmed by such, as I’m sure you well know, but probably couldn’t care. So, unless you can provide TRUTH, you ought to keep your mouth shut. I think CHAOS is in your mind!!! P.S. Whistle blowers should not be punished.
