WAS FATHER HENRY / CIARAN O’CONNELL EXPOSED BY A MAYO HOUSEWIFE OR A FELLOW CLERIC WITH AN AGENDA?

When I received the above email I was a bit surprised that a devout Mayo RCC wife and mother had a son in Dublin that sent his Mammy screenshots from the gay app Grindr.

How many young men from rural Ireland send their conservative Church going mammies Grindr screenshot?

That level of KOOLNESS is surely rare in rural Ireland – even in the 21 st century?

O”CONNELL’S POSITION

The O’Connell situation should never have reached where it has.

Henry should have known he was not suitable to celibacy and should not have sought priesthood.

What was his thinking?

Those concerned with his training should not have progressed him.

But it suited their agenda.

They may have been gay themselves – and indeed “used” Henry in some ways?

It’s another crisis caused by the actively gay cabal.

Pat, you need to explain what you mean that this priests ordination nsy have suited their agenda…Are you in some mode of imagination or fanciful fantasy? Many a man duscoveted within a few tears that irdinatiin was nit for them. Two in ny class left after 4 and 5 years. It was the right decision for them. No one spent days or months analysing the reasons. We wished them well and thankfully they both did exceptionally well in their lives. Why are you subjecting this man to your analysis? If all our life’s decision are meant to be super perfect from the beginning, we’d rarely make any important decisions. Surely you know that as the rest of us do…

If you spent a few years training as, say, an accountant, you would be in a good position well within that time to know that it wasn’t for you.
For example if you couldn’t count.
If you spend many more years becoming a priest then within a few years ‘discover’ you can’t count there is either something wrong with the formation or with you.
For example if you ‘discover’ you can’t keep it in your pants this will have been the case all along.
Stop making excuses.

8.08: I’m not making any excuses for anyone’s decisions re: leaving priesthood after just a few short years. I think the full reality of living a celibate life often only impacts when you begin working in ministry. Six or seven years should in some way give us the awareness of expectations and realities but only the “lived” daily reality of priesthood impacts over time. I recall after just six years having great doubts, uncertainties and personal challenges and managed to renew, reevaluate and discern with the guidance of a wonderful spiritual director. That was a great awakening and enlightenment for me. I dislike your cynicism and disdainful judgment. I know lots of people who, after 3/4// years studying for particular professions opted out and found new interests and opportunities other than what they were preparing for. You lack deep insights of human psychology to argue in this very simplistic analysis. You lack understanding of the dynamics of human interactions, intimacy, sexuality and connections to dialogue meaningfully. May God bless Henry in his future endeavours. A little kindness goes a long way…

8:08am Not necessarily true! If you grew up orthodox there was not homosexuality but simply the sin of homosexual thoughts and actions.
If Henry grew up thus, he may have been tempted in these ways but he will have said his prayers and devoutly and piously followed his faith. He will have expected that clerics and fellow seminarians would do the same and would have been scandalised on discovery that this was very often not the case. The claim someone is immature is a bit rich when The Church expects that you will enter seminary etc in this mindset, which is immature to the ways of the world but instead of accomodating The World it defends itself from it’s snare by prayer and piety. The cognitive dissonance for many leaves them extremely vulnerable to manipulation. If for some reason they are favoured and not kicked out, the onslaught on their beliefs and piety continues and leaves them without armour and protection and the void is filled by the new culture. Perhaps Henry joined the Oratorians hoping to restore his lost innocence and prayer life? Perhaps he was used and abused by them also? Or perhaps it was that there is no return to innocence. That he could not return to the pious young man he had been and that the support within the church for him to process all this and become the healed and wholesome integrated adult just does not exist because firstly they would have to admit the wholesale infiltration of a predatory homosexual culture within the church and the damage it does and had done to Henry. That he may have tried to cover up this massive hurt with drink and drugs should be no great surprise, trouble is, as many of us addicts discover, it ultimately makes things worse and now Henry looks like the bad guy when I suspect there are many others in this who bear a far greater blame. Henry now seems to be trying to come to terms wit things but I fear just throwing yourself into “Whatever The Other Life Brings” will not bring the happiness he seeks. Sex may well be now part of the addiction. It’s his poor heart that needs love….a love that The World and The RCC respectively cannot and are currently incapable as an institution, to provide. I hope he finds all the support he needs. I suppose it’s possible I’m wrong and he’s just been a hedonistic egotist all his life, but I think the scenario I paint may have more truth in it.

Yet another knee-jerk and unscientific reaction. Of course the provenance of a comment affects how it will be i terpreted. It’s an elementary first principle in historical criticism. For example, if Magna Carta were the source of a comment readers would know how to interpret it, differently from say, if Jimmy Saville had claimed it. It’s a wonder you didn’t include a reference to CSA with which to confront the commenter. It’s the only weapon (used advisedly) in your ad hominem arsenal.

Pat I think you have hit the nail on the head. There appears to be a thread of gay priests, mostly under 40, across Ireland using Grindr. Their bishops are aware and oftentimes deflect the responsibility.
In my diocese in Northern Ireland it is scandal after scandal to the point where it becomes laughable. The order of our young priests’ day is: 1. Christening at 10am, 2. Mass at 12noon, 3. Last Rites for the Sick, 4. Hit the bar after 8pm and get completely pissed, and round the priestly day off with a good old Grindr hookup.
Our Lord and Blessed Mother look on in pity.

The list of those is a v long arm – too many are unsuited and most would be barely employable in any walk of life – the gay cabal however dominates the priesthood – and gay bishops dominate the episcopate.
The deeper question is why?

What’s going on with seminary formation? Who forms the formators? Are they ordaining men ‘made in their own image and likeness’? This nonsense is not sustainable on several levels including the cost implications- it’s a highly expensive protracted journey to discover unsuitability -post ordination!! Lets have openness transparency and debate on formation.

Like

The seminary formation period is much too long. They study philosophy for two years and then theology for three/four years but don’t use any of that in their homilies, which are of the banal “let us be nice” type. Waste of money doing all that study and never sharing it.

The reason is firstly heterosexual men would like to marry and have children. For gay men marrying a woman and having children is not an option.
Secondly even if heterosexual men enter seminary, they soon realise that they are the minority and the gays soon drive them out.
The priesthood is a gay profession with rules made for gays by gays. Heterosexual men are not wanted.
Simple as.

The substantive issue here in the case of this Fr Henry is surely his unsuitability to be a priest under the present requirements for priestly life, particularly celibacy, chastity and sexual continence. We could engage on a debate about the good sense of the celibacy requirement, but for the sake of this case let us just assume it is the requirement and any man seeking ordination should be aware of that and committed to doing his very best to keep and respect a promise that he makes freely and publicly before God and the faithful..

So, the question is, as some have already suggested, how is it that a young man goes through five or six years of formation and still at the end of it seems to have little understanding of what is required of him as a priest ? There is surely something wrong with the formation process that this is the case. Henry himself should have had some self awareness of his interests and inclinations and of his lack of capacity, and evident unwillingness, to maintain celibacy.

More importantly, those who were responsible for his formation should have known this after five or six years of close scrutiny, perhaps even within the first years of his being in seminary. I worry about this aspect, because it reflects on the formation process in our seminaries and the woeful lack of professionalism and ability on the part of seminary formation staff. This could be because so many of the seminary staff have themselves problems / issues / inclinations that might make them incapable / unwilling to address such issues as Henry has. They may even encourage such behaviour. I lay the blame mostly with the formation system and staff that Henry was allowed to go on for so long and eventually reach ordination. His formation path seems to have been particularly changeable, moving from congregation to diocese to diocese. That instability should have raised red flags. Seminary reform, formation reform is clearly indicated. What sense does it make to form men for priesthood and ministry in a single sex, isolated, semi-monastic environment ? Surely there is a formation system and environment that would be more suited to this task and would ensure that men like Henry are not ordained because they are patently unsuitable to the requirements of priesthood as laid down by the Church ?

Henry is evidently immature and self-delusional with little self awareness, otherwise he too should have realised his unsuitability for ordination. However, his failings do not excuse the failings of the seminary formation he underwent, because it failed in its job to ensure that he was suitable for ordination. How many times do we see this ? Just thing of Jolly ex of Oscott and Liverpool, who within a year or two of ordination was engaging in very dysfunctional and criminal behaviour. I refuse to believe that there were not indications of his inclinations during his time in seminary. Who was turning a blind eye ? Who was being careless ? Who did not know what they were doing ? Perhaps seminaries might up ttheir game if a court somewhere decided that they had vicarious liability for the crimes of one of their seminarians that they have been responsible for over five years ? That might focus the mind !

10.07 Well intentioned but that is what you are….and the well intentioned never brought many too far. Clearly you have not spoken with a married couple or one partner from a married couple….after 5, 10, 20, 30, 50 years of marriage. As a Parisian Priest once said to a set of couples at their group marriage ceremony ” you think you know what love is.” He then told them at the many junctures ahead they would get a sense of what it really is and then someday…………..
Formation does not exist in a mature reality, the intricate essentials of each individual cannot be suppressed. They blossom and further expose over time and it is in time they are laid bare.

Like

Oh get real, 1038 ! A young man entering a Catholic seminary will know from day one that celibacy is part of the package, and over a number of years should be able to work out whether he can live a celibate life. It’s not that hard to work that out, by behaviour, by desire, by action. I have no doubt that Henry et al work out their sexuality at seminary, and so should know what the position is. To go forward for ordination knowing that you are either incapable or simply don’t want to or have no intention of embracing celibacy, then the way of integrity and honesty to do is to leave. The life is not for you. Actually, integrity and honesty come in to it a great deal. And from my point of view, I’d say Henry can’t be trusted and will not live a life of integrity no matter what course he takes. I wouldn’t trust him an inch. He has shown himself to be untrustworthy, dishonest, delusional, self-serving and not fit to be a priest. So, I guess it is a good job that he has gone off to what he thinks are pastures green and new, a new direction. But, watch that space ! There will be trouble there too. I put money on it.

I was beginning to despair of finding someone else who would reasonably expect a grown man to know his own sexual interests, have an insight into his own personality and spot that they were in direct opposition to the life he was going into.
Perhaps the problem is that formators are among those who don’t expect these things like the comments above?

Church convicts Catholic ex-priest of abusing boy for years in Germany
By Associated Press, Jun 7, 2022.
‘BERLIN — A Catholic diocese in Germany said Tuesday that a former priest has been convicted in a church trial of sexually abusing a minor over several years almost three decades ago.The man, who wasn’t identified, was ordered to pay 10 percent of his income to a charitable organization that helps victims of abuse, the diocese of Limburg said. While financial payouts have been included in confidential settlements between the church and victims of abuse, the announcement of a financial penalty against a priest as a result of a canonical investigation is unusual.’

Your moral compass is set low. How is this not a scandal? Within a couple of weeks of saying his last mass, he advertises to the world he is sexually versatile and into leather-clad men. These things don’t happen overnight, and there is a high probability that he acted out sexually whilst In active ministry. Remember the origin of the word scandal – a stumbling block – to many people, this sort of behaviour makes them question the integrity of all priests.

Henry, you are not fooling anybody by writing about yourself in the third person. The harm which you have done to the People of God and to the Priesthood is a cause of grave scandal. A scandal so grave that one worries for your soul. As a brother priest and a fellow spiritual son of Saint Philip, I implore you to seek whatever psychological help which you need. Whatever path your life takes you on, please strive not to selfishly and narcissistically use other people in the same way which you have used the Archdiocese of Dublin, the Institute of Christ the King, the Oratory and the Archdiocese of Tuam. Your actions are not wholly and exclusively just about “you”. Even though you might like to think it, the world does not revolve around you. Your actions have real and lasting effects on the faith lives of many other people, particularly the people in the parishes in which you have served. They are scandalised. The parishioners of the York Oratory are scandalised. The sisters at the Bar Convent are scandalised. I am sure that the People of God in the parish in Westport are scandalised and that their faith has been shaken by your conduct and grossly imprudent decisions. Decisions which you made in a spirit of sheer narcissistic selfishness, without a care in the world for the impact your conduct had on other people and upon the Church.
Our Lord is kind, merciful and full of compassion, however, he does give a dire warning to his disciples and his priests:
‘But he that shall scandalize one of these little ones that believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be drowned in the depth of the sea.’ (Mt 18:6)
