WATERFORD PARISHIONER WITH QUESTIONS FOR PHONSIE THE ODIOUS.

I am reading with interest your pieces on the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore with some time now and what is happening there.

Right now there are many people wondering where some of the priests have gone. People don’t know where they are or what they are doing.

For a few years there was a Waterford and Lismore Diocesan Directory printed for a few years which I know was issued to the school’s in the diocese and maybe to Priest and pastoral councils. I do not know if the latter got a copy but I know School’s and Priests did.

Some weeks back I got my hands on a copy of the 2007 Directory and did some research.

There is 13 priests listed in it, who could still be working if it was their wish but are currently without a parish.

The 13 are (and I include their year of ordination which might give a rough idea of what age they might be now).

Michael O’Brien (1982)

Joseph Condon (1988)

Jim Denmead (1990)

Paul Murphy (1996) It is said he was sent off to the Army as a Chaplain in Galway

Michael F. Walsh (1973)

Pat Butler (1982)

Michael P. Kennedy (1981). There is two Michael Kennedy’s listed in the Directory. This is the Priest that famously reported in the 1990’s that there was a woman in Dungarvan sleeping with men from the down and passing on the HIV Virus to them.

Gerard O’Connor (1990)

Frank Lloyd (1985)

Pat Hayes (1992)

Charlie Scanlan (1966) When his brother died he was not the celebrant at the mass and he does not help out in the Parish where he lives, despite the fact that the Parish Priest goes away suffering with depression.

Michael O’Connor (1967)

Thomas Burns (1978)

Meanwhile there is some older priests who are still working in Parish’s or makes themselves available to cover for other priests when they are sick or on holidays and maybe even as a school chaplain.

Raymond Liddane (1955) Currently the second oldest priest in the Diocese

Bill Carey (1961)

Michael Enright (1964)

Eanna Condon (1963)

Maybe with any contacts you have in the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore you might be able to work out and let people know how many of the above men are still priests and if they are where are they to be found.

Keep up your good work

Very good question. I have been researching this issue for over a year now and there are patterns to this. Most are c/o or on sabbatical or just suddenly disappear into oblivion. Some leave the diocese to take up other positions abroad on sabbatical, for years and years. I have found some who are registered in more than one diocese, one in Ireland and a foreign diocese. Often there is no photo available in the foreign diocese register, it’s as if they are hiding.

11:14 correct, we are constantly informed by Church that there is an acute shortage of priests on the ground, some very elderly priests are very dedicated & literally do as much as they can despite advanced years & ailing health & on an individual basis deserve to be respected for this. This would suggest that there must be very concrete reasons why certain younger priests in better health are not being called in to serve in parishes. Yes, these priests would appear to be, as you say, in hiding 🙈

You MIGHT find it instructive to read a Guardian online article today related to social work.
Put simply, for your benefit:…….over years of government cuts to local authority funding forcing council social services to close their own children’s homes, as the need for placements of distressed children has increased, the “market” has been filled by private companies charging impoverished local authorities excessive fees while failing to provide the high level of quality care needed. That’s a simple summary.
Many issues arise from this. Some readers of the full article MIGHT appreciate the dynamics: …the intelligent insightful ones? Maybe?

Non formalised complaints lead Bishops to getting some clergy out of sight to appease those who will not go all the way with reporting wrong doing and with no regard for endangering members of new unsuspecting communities. It’s all about what’s best for the RCC image.
Some clergy involved in gay & straight relationships in direct contravention of their conditions of ordination
Clergy arranging abortions for pregnant lovers but at same time preaching & publicly supporting outdated legislation that has led to deaths of women, Savita and many others
Engaging in miscellaneous sexual and financial Church connected deviancy aiding and abetting same
Some of the reasons why this blog won’t receive a full and comprehensive account on all missing or hidden clergy from any Diocese or Bishop so don’t hold your breath folks.

Wasn’t he involved in some sort of controversy soon after he was appointed a Parish Administrator. There was something that he could not be a Parish Priest in the Parish he was appointed to as there was a Parish Priest who was forced to stand down for some Canon Law reason. He {Murphy} was involved in something along the lines he did not want people with long connections to the parish but who might be living outside the parish themselves to be buried in the graveyards in the two churches in his parish. He was on the radio with the late Billy McCarthy, a former priest in Waterford and Lismore who tore him to pieces for his decision, and he moved on soon afterwards.

Pat I am a priest of a religious congregation and we have a similar situation. 5 men in various dioceses with little or no contact with the congregation. 1 is living alone basically as a recluse due to mental health issues, understandably, but the other 4 will have ultimatums soon from a new provincial. These fellas are still hanging around dioceses we would have left 10+ years ago.
Its an interesting phenomenon with the likes of Columban and Kiltegans etc too, seems to be loads of them doing diocesan work around the country.

8.06: Remember all the men you speak of are returned missionaries and without their presence and support many parishes would be very stretched or bereft of a priest. They are, mostly in good health and rather than sit in a living room all day at headquarters, isn’t it wonderful they are still working? All proper procedures are followed, including garda vetting. I’ve met many such priests and admire their willingness to continue to work after years as missionaries. What’s the issue?

They don’t have any students now on their main Co Wicklow site. They’ll be forced eventually to sell off that site, just like their former Cork city Douglas village one (now Rochestown Pk hotel), and the Scottish one near Buchlyvie. Having created a substantial care facility on former football field at Kiltegan’s High Park, they’re lumbered with maintaining it for a large cohort of ailing retirees. And with the main building unsuitable for alternative hotel like usage as well as being fairly isolated in Wicklow foothills its potential sell-off attraction may be limited.
I suspect that once the numbers in the care facility reduces they’ll eventually sell up and move. I was there in the early 60’s and regularly check their Facebook page to note who next from my former mates has died. I visited on their “family day” five years ago. It was depressing: like an alternative reality to which I couldn’t relate, other than fond memories of many very decent well meaning former colleagues.

The former Kiltegan house in Scotland is now self-catering holiday accommodation and their former house in Maynooth is now used as academic offices by Maynooth University. The big SMA house in Maynooth is now Maynooth University lay student accommodation, and the former Columban, Presentation and Mercy houses there have all been turned to secular use. I am reluctant to mention this, but I feel it must be said. Stephen O Brien was also a priest in Waterford and Lismore. I mentioned Sunday Mary Rafertys documentary Behind the Walls. Stephens younger sister was studying in the Sorbonne University in Paris around 1980 when she became unwell. She may have been feeling overwhelmed by University life in France. She came home for support and saw Dr. Denis Lane O Kelly. From my recollection of the documentary, O Kelly sexually violated her at the first consultation. I could be wrong. Think about it, a highly intelligent young woman feeling very vulnerable experiencing difficulties in a new life situation was violated by a man considered a top psychiatrist. Talk about making life more difficult for a person. While this man was sexually abusing patients, he was allowing priests who were raping children return to ministry. I was reliably told when Stephen learnt his sister had carried this burden for so long before telling anyone it was the final straw for him, and he left the priesthood. I often wonder if solicitors of victims of priests Lane O Kelly allowed back to ministry took further legal action against the church when it became known he was sexually abusing patients. Dr. Lane O Kelly was the person needing to be behind walls, prison walls.

Like

It’s not like the church is going to choose a psychiatrist who can behave to conduct its assessments on its priests.

What is it about the RC priesthood in which it favours secrecy to transparency and cover up to full disclosure – it could be argued that like any and every company they have things that they’d rather keep under wraps.
Problem is most companies and organisations don’t claim to be ‘experts in humanity’ or that it’s middle management or foot soldiers are ‘ontologicaly changed’ or ‘persona Christi.’
Once a priest falls foul in any number of ways: crime, scandal, laicised, etc it’s as if he didn’t exist and woe betide an impertinent lay person who enquires of their whereabouts.
Birmingham is a classic – a list as long as your arm – every second parish being run by Indian, African or Asian clergy.
John Gilbert – a Canon of the Chapter – just up and left,
Eddie Clare – Director of Maryvale – now you see him, now you don’t.
Peter Norton – young and newly ordained – slipped away into the dark of the night.
Philip Gay – 25 years a priest – gone, as if he didn’t exist.
Joe Quigley – actually we know where Joe is – enjoying Her Majesty’s Pleasure.
And so on.

Like

Philip Gay was / is a nice chap. I think we should celebrate the fact that he found love and happiness in marriage. His replacement by a married ex-Anglican points out the nonsense of the Catholic Church’s position on clergy and marriage and mandatory celibacy. I’m sure the parishioners in that parish were rather bemused that they got a married priest because the priest they loved had to leave because he wanted to marry ! What a nonsense. I have just turned 70 and because of such nonsense, and much more, I have retired before my time. I just told the bishop I was doing it, and since I wasn’t asking for any support or money for my retirement there was little he could do about it, except try and make me feel guilty ! You know, the usual platitudes about ‘hand to the plough’ and ‘not looking back’ etc. Pathetic really, because he simply was not willing to listen to the reasons why I wanted to retire. I was tired, I was fed up with the clerical bureaucracy and idiocy that goes on in diocese, I could not in good conscience support Church teaching on so many matters, at least I could not stomach the hard line, self-righteous, moralistic stuff that you get from so many priests and bishops. I would be asked to take on more and more as I got older, keeping the show on the road. A show that is going to inevitably crumble in the near future. Why sacrifice myself for a useless endeavour to keep a discredited and dysfunctional institution going ? I think many priests think like me, except they don’t have the freedom, financial mostly, to pull up sticks and retired. The whole grey economy of the Church and the clergy is designed to pressure priests to be compliant and stay. It’s a mess and it is going to get worse and then it will all come tumbling down, then they will have to face reality and rethink priestly ministry and open it to married men, single men, and also to women. It is inevitable that is going to happen. The sooner the better.

4.43: What a very honest and thought provoking piece of writing. Thank you Father for your input. The reality you describe is hitting many priests and we feel unable to respond in any meaningful way to the expectations and challenges facing us. We are expected to literally reinvent ourselves at 65/70 years of age and believe we can still keep going. We can personally renew ourselves to be more prayerful, Christ like and caring but the present attempts at reconstructing and rearranging the Church, parishes and ministry are overwhelming. We are bowed down with so much bureaucracy, plans, projects, initiatives and meetings that we are beginning to overburden the very good lay people in our parishes who are already involved over many years. “Burnout”, while an overused phrase is a serious reality for priests, spiritually, mentally and emotionally. While I rrespect the moral teachings, liturgical norms and teachings of the Church, it is difficult to present them in a relevant way for 21st century living. We seem to have overlooked the simplicity of the gospel message and vision for forming Christian communities and used a shaming and judgmental style in our way of preaching and approaching peolle. The scandals of all kinds have destroyed our moral authority and integrity. They have also ruined our interactions with people who, while still wonderfully supportive, kerp some distance from us. I am not bemoaning this but it presents many questions for each of us. My years have been predominantly filled with positivity, blessings, satisfaction and enrichment. Today, as age creeps up, illnesses take hold, disillusionment and bureaucracy overpowering, reduced to a funeral presider, school chaplaincy with poor faith responsees from parents and teachers, a growing apathy, aging personnel and dwindling congregations, I would not recommend priesthood to any man or woman. Perhaps the “retiring” at 70 is a super idea. However, I have to remain hope filled in my limitations and struggles and trust in God for each day. It’s hard to comprehend how life could have changed so much in 44 years of ministry.

Like

Bishop Buckley, the obvious person to address the questions posed by the parishioner, is Bishop Cullinan. Since Bishop Cullinan has created a new practice of letting the Faithful of the Diocese know when priests leave ministry, can he tell why other priests in his Diocese are not in ministry and if they continue to receive financial support from the Diocese. In fact, as a new dawn of openness has been established by Bishop Cullinan, his colleagues in the Hierarchy can do likewise, and let the People of God, who they serve, know who is out of ministry in their respective Dioceses, why, and if the Faithful are still providing for them financially.

The retirement age for a priest is 75.
Why did John Gilbert retire so young – 60 made him one of the young ones.
What’s the story glory?

Greetings came through via text from the sleaziest City in Thailand,

In message, friend was saying cheaper prices

Tea cost 20 c, coffee 50c, pints ranging from 80c to 1.50 depending on which brand name.

Full breakfast is €2,

Dinner €8 with dessert.

Tips for women in bar €8 (bar fine).

Then he’s off soon to visit a deaf school founded by a Catholic priest where American navy men dump Thai babies as they go home, leaving all the burden to Thai women who shagged with them.

BBK is a massive sprawling city, dangerous drivers, go go bars, pro pickpockets, king himself who was reported to have contracted hiv (no proof but hence his medical treatment in Germany)etc. If you say a bad word about thai King, you would be hauled to court and a prison sentence.

I was told that a certain Bishop comiskey did visit Bangkok ages ago.

Hi DG.
How are you my lovely?

Good to hear from you.

I wouldn’t be surprised re your handbag.

Some women weren’t too happy when I mentioned trip to Thailand years ago.

There was one place in Thailand that I don’t like was the sleaziest City. What I got lot of pressure from most Thai women to have sex. It was unreal to see it and experience it. But that city isn’t my cup of tea.

Even I saw some irish young women wearing Dublin gaa jerseys visiting that sleaziest city as I was quite surprised.

My favourite is phuket, phi phi Island, koi samui. No pressure from thai women, very relaxed & slow drinking as I was able to switch it off. The biggest problem in phuket is ladyboys who quite aggressive and demanding as I steer well clear of them after 2am.

Thats where tsunami happened at that beach of phuket. It was sad to see it in a tsunami museum there cis its very graphic.

I would go back again this time around, will be phuket and surrounding islands.

Pat are you in the process of writing an autobiography? I think it would be a thrilling read, possibly even turned into a local film.

Would be a wonderful role for Liam Neeson or Jamie Dornan- or both in fact, if the film could chronicle Pat’s whole life. Young Jamie- young Pat

+Cullinan said yes voters of the abortion holocaust referendum “should go to confession”. He was criticised in some quarters for his comment. Who would be a bishop?! I thought he was being generous.
People who voted yes for the abortion holocaust, walked out of the polling stations with blood on their hands. They can try and wash their hands of the vote all they like. They will not be able to wash the blood from their hands.

+ Cullinan accepted the appointment. He had a choice. He can resign if needs be.
Try walking in the shoes of a survivor of Institutional church abuse. Try dealing with its consequences including appalling spiritual abuse. Try live in a country labelled the ground zero of Rcc abuse worldwide. Who would be a survivor of abuse in catholic Ireland. Human life is scared at all stages of the life cycle not only in the womb.Bishops, including + Cullinan and priests, will not be able to hide from Almighty God.

A word of warning or caution re Thailand, just my advice that you don’t have to follow it, it’s up to you.
If any of you have addictions issues, it’s best to stay away from Thailand or don’t go there.
A group of us who went there long ago have had some various addiction issues(arising from abuses).
After 1st trip, we both realised that we have to sort it out one way or another. Also realised we were tough when it came to a crunch with some chancers or devious people.
I realised months later, afterwards after arguing with an army officer of Thailand that we could have ended up in jail. Harsh experience in cabra helped us to be tough when it came to some of the characters in Thailand plus great solid advice from ex Irish navy gay man who ran a bar there, told us what to expect and not, also what to protect yourselves.

Survivors praised for 20 years of exposing Catholic abuse scandals
QUINCY (MA)
National Catholic Reporter [Kansas City MO June 8, 2022 By Brian Fraga.
” More than 20 years since the Boston Globe’s Spotlight investigative team exposed the scope of Catholic clergy sexual abuse and institutional cover-up in the Archdiocese of Boston, attorney Mitchell Garabedian said abuse survivors are still teaching the church “how to be moral.” “None of this could be done without your strength,” Garabedian said during a June 4 conference in Quincy, sponsored by several nonprofits that advocate for abuse survivors and accountability in the church”.

Whistleblowers and the Abuse Crisis: Two Women’s Stories
June 7, 2022. Editor’s Note: This week we revisit a post from August 2021.
” As the abuse crisis in the Catholic Church has unfolded, some people employed by the Church have made the choice to publicize previously secret information about sexual abuse and cover-up in their local dioceses.”…… “In the essay about her experience, O’Connor called on others with this kind of information to share it. “It is my prayer that there are more chancery employees out there who will be able to set the truth free,” she wrote. “As for me, the actions I took left me with a heavy heart but a peaceful soul.”
