Six novices were dismissed last June from the California novitiate of a small religious order, just weeks after they reported that their novice master touched several of them inappropriately without their consent, and engaged in manipulation and other conduct which caused them “serious harm.”
Their dismissal came after an internal investigation cleared the novice master of wrongdoing. But investigators did not interview any of the novices before rejecting their claims, the Canons Regular of the Immaculate Conception confirmed to The Pillar.
An attorney for the community told The Pillar that the men did not specifically request to be interviewed when they reported their allegations, and that such interviews were not necessary to resolve their misconduct claims.
The former novices say the process was unjust, and that the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, in which the novitiate was located, should have done more to assist them when they alleged misconduct. After questions from The Pillar, the archdiocese said it is open to investigating the men’s allegations.
The Pillar spoke with five former novices of the Canons Regular of the Immaculate Conception, a religious congregation of priests with fewer than 50 members, and houses in Europe, South America, and California, where the congregation serves two parishes.

Last night a priest friend of mine treated me to a 70 th birthday present of a ticket to a Christy Moore concert in my native Tullamore.
It was a lovely treat but I cannot name my priest friend because his bishop would annihilate him.
Christy’s concert was very critical of the RCC and the audience went wild with affirmation.
Tomorrow, Sunday I move in to Roscrea to meet people concerned about the Cistercian monastery there.
Then on to Carlow to discuss problems in Kildare and Leighlin involving Big Denis.

That article about the novices being dismissed from this monastery is very disturbing. Saw it a few days ago and am disturbed about the situation. I know very little about the Order except what their website and Wikipedia say. The behaviour of the novice master is morally and spiritually beyond acceptance. He ought to have been dismissed instantly and the Superior General should have replaced him immediately, ordering the novice to confinement and penance, listened to the novices after which the novice master be reported to authorities or brought to a canonical trial where he must be dismissed. The novices should get a top class csnon lawyer and civil barrister to state their case of sexual harrassment and attempted sexual misconduct or abuse. These young men must be brought back to the Order or helped find a similar one which suits their spirituality. This type of disgusting errant behaviour, moral, sexual, spiritual and emotional is totally reprehensible and is replicated all too frequently in smaller, ultra right wing groups, as we witnessed at Silverstream. This case represents a total abuse of authority. Shame on the superior and novice master. Shame. We pray that the novices will find a new community. God bless them.

Really not being funny, but haven’t you been reading the news for the past few decades, I too read the whole article, was also disturbed and disgusted, and reflected that it was just a normal day in religious life. This includes the other members of the congregation not knowing that the novice master was blind drunk every night despite living with him.

I think you’re thinking of the minimum numbers in Cor Orans but that only applies to women’s communities. Since it came out it’s closed Oulton and Colwich Abbeys in England, and Curzon Park will be next.

Sad to see how these novices were abused by RCC management for reporting clergy for sexual abuse & harassment. Therefore, it’s no wonder that there is a lack of vocations and that the RCC is building teams of laity from the business and professional classes via its Synod to protect their bank accounts & property portfolios. God certainly has left the building & everyone knows it. Christy Moore and many others figured them out a long time ago. Delighted that you enjoyed his concert, Bishop Pat. Bishop Pat, your Roscrea visit will be interesting. I wish you well. The Cistercians in Roscrea continue to be highly dysfunctional. There is lots going on there and things are being covered up. Money being spent with no accountability. The school is in a mess and being mismanaged. Staff in the school are being treated very badly, the ‘management’ do what the monks tell them. The monastery and school are heading to the rocks and it will be a massive blame game when it all comes to an end. At least they bought a little mini bus to move the monks to Waterford.

Sent to Fintan & Cleo last night: Fr Ger Fitzgerald violated 5km lockdown restrictions in March 2021 to drive to Doonas in Clonlara where the gards questioned him for trespassing on private property. One of the policeman knew a few priests in Ennis so Ger was let off with no fine, just a warning. He jokes that the “collar” saved him. For every attack or act of subterfuge against me, more evidence will be sent to Fintan and the media will become involved. No fear.

Santa Paula California, rings a bell. It’s a bit inland from Ventura, in a nice valley, and a bit of a centre of traditionalist right wing Catholicism. There is a small Catholic college there, St Thomas Aquinas, which is a nice, comfortable, privileged but very right wing and traditionalist set up for rich white kids from those kinds of families, who are imbued with all the Coridileone / Gomez / Burke nonsense that is alive and kicking in parts of the US Catholic Church. Just up the road is the Los Angeles archdiocesan seminary at Camarillo California, St John’s Seminary. They have just had to sell of acres of prime land around the seminary to pay off huge abuse settlements, so that now private houses abut the seminary buildings. A strange place too, full of the usual homoerotic repressed stuff we see in seminaries. So, I’m not surprised that these Canons should set up a noviciate in such a pleasant place, where they can play at the traditionalist stuff outwardly, but inwardly enjoy themselves in the dysfunctional ways we see reported. It will not be the only place where this stuff goes on.

It ceased to be church property in 1965. It was never a palace. A lot of Bishops in the UK live over the shop. E.g Westminster. Lots of people confuse Buckingham Palace (HM the Queen) and Lambeth Palace (Archbishop of Canterbury, Anglican) with Westminster and Southwark.

I wish people were not bombastic and self-confident despite being wrong on the facts. The bishop was living in it in 2004 and it was still diocesan property then. CMOC used to hold diocesan garden parties in the grounds.

I remember in my novitiate days if we needed anything, shaving cream for example, we’d have to go to our novice master’s room, go prostrate on the floor and say: “Most Reverend Father Superior, I am a poor man, I need X Y and Z” and hope to be granted it.

Pat, in your traipsing around the various towns of Ireland, can you tell us if you are bringing your muscle guardsmen to protect you, as you did before? Will you have a camera or binoculars? Who has authorised you to interfere in the affairs of another organisation and moreso when you depend on gossip, rumour and hearsay? Maybe you might think about a retreat somewhere along your Camino and allow God to find you again. Now that would make your traipsing worthwhile!

5.23: When i was an aspirant and subsequently a novice for a teaching order in the early 70’s, I never experienced anything like that. The only thing I disliked was the Sunday morning public “confesssing” of failures in front of everyone but thankfully it faded out. We did not have to grovel for anything in any way. After first vows I decided against teaching and joined the priedthood. My years with the religious order were very good years, way back in the early 70’s. The 5 brothers who looked after us were very wise, kind, sensible and caring and excellent teachers, particularly an elderly returned missionary brother who taught Latin and English and helped me get top grades in the Leaving Cert!! Thank you Br. Lawrence and Brs. Gerard, Pat, Canice and Michael…all now deceased.

There’ll be some session between and amongst the young clergy in Armagh in two weeks time. The gay cruise starts on the Coalisland Canal and will navigate the inland waterways to Dublin. All Grindr Rev Frs will be present; stopping in Dungannon, Cookstown and various pick-up points for desk priests. Giddy up.
