KILLALOE ACCUSED OF DECEIVING LAITY OVER THE ROLE OF DEACON.

FROM THE TABLET

https://www.thetablet.co.uk/news/15444/killaloe-accused-of-deceiving-laity-over-role-of-deacon

“We are left wondering if in reality the permanent diaconate is being introduced by stealth,” said one parishioner.

Members of the laity have accused the Diocese of Killaloe of a “breach of trust” over the ministry of permanent deacons which remains on hold in the west of Ireland diocese.

Plans to train laymen for the ministry were paused in 2014 by the then Bishop of Killaloe, Kieran O’Reilly, following protests by a group known as the Women of Killaloe.

They argued that the role of the permanent deacon is unnecessary as most of its functions can be carried out by a layperson. They also believe that if it is introduced, it should be open to women and men, as it was in the early Church.

Bishop Fintan Monahan succeeded O’Reilly, now Archbishop of Cashel and Emly, in 2016.

However, despite the pause on recruiting permanent deacons in Killaloe, it subsequently emerged that one man from the diocese had already begun training for the diaconate before the reintroduction of the ministry was halted.

The Tablet has learned that a number of lay people in Killaloe are now concerned that this permanent deacon, who was ordained for the Diocese of Cloyne, is ministering publicly in Killaloe, including at liturgies in the cathedral in Ennis, undermining the agreement reached between the diocese and its people.

PAT SAYS

The offices of Deacon and Deaconess are as old as Christianity.

The three Holy Orders are deacon priest and bishop.

What is all this fuss about in Killaloe?

The previous bishop seems to have halted the ordination to the permanent diaconate as the result of protestations by Women of Killaloe?

Who are Women of Killaloe?

Are they a group of women seeking woman’s ordination?

How does stopping male permanent deacons help their cause?

I am in favour of women’s ordination.

I ordained a woman to the priesthood 24 years ago – Mother Frances.

1998

Now in her 90s she is still on ministry

With the disappearance of priests the RCC needs more deacons.

Surely the Women of Killaloe should be campaigning for women’s ordination?

In 2016 Francis convened a study of the role of Deaconess.

It does not seem to have reported yet.

There will be women priests and deacons in the future – alongside married priests.

Maybe even eventually openly gay married priests.

Pat, why don’t you establish a ministry role for women deacons? Surely it would attract interest…What is your rationale?

The deacon in question is Rev. Leonard Cleary. He is a deacon of Cloyne diocese not Killaloe since as you correctly pointed out women’s groups objected to male only deacons. I’m sure he like other clergy appear at funerals, weddings and ordinations etc and officiated as a deacon… a more interesting fact about Rev. Leonard id say is that he is very high up in Clare County Council. He is a director of service a rank just below county manager.. interesting concept in the separation of church and state?.. regarding the women’s group in question might be worth asking the notoriously Revs Casey brother gang in wild West Clare…

All the Roman church cares about is money and property – God is just a front, they treat the vulnerable like shit, target them & exploit their weaknesses for the profit of themselves & their cronies. Handy that Cleary is on Clare County Council senior management- interesting too that Ennis Bingo Hall & Community Centre in the middle of our town & that served dinners to poor of Ennis for years etc has been sold to Clare County Council – prime central location – will it be used for the ordinary people – what are the plans for it? Scamming the poor & the vulnerable as usual whilst they live in luxury at their expense.

And they can’t really dictate that a deacon incardinated in another diocese can’t minister in that diocese. What utter foolishness.
Wimmin of Killaloe would be better realizing that the church of Rome is all about oppressing women and gays, while the clergy are at it like rabbits.
Also I don’t know the place but moving house sounds like a plan.

I won’t be long until the law of various countries will make it illegal for the Church to discriminate on grounds of gender, sexuality, lifestyle, in fact on any ground, for those who come forward for ordination. It is only a matter of time. And so it should be. The nonsense of mandatory celibacy, male only priesthood has had its day, and any right thinking and sensible Catholic can see that. The mood music in various countries is moving in this direction, and in places like Germany bishops are openly talking about these changes. Yes, we must expect a backlash by those who prefer to stay in their comfortable and unsustainable certainties, which usually means that they are full of fear rather than certainty, but not allow them to dominate the argument. They have had it their way for too long, and look where that has got us – a hollowed out Church, a distrusted Church, a Church that can’t be trusted to do the right thing to those who are vulnerable, a Church that looks out for its own backside in any circumstance, a Church that lies and covers up, a Church led by bishops and priests who have been shown to be inclined to grievous criminality. What more reasons do you want ?

Like

9:54 daily informal discrimination, targeting of vulnerable for personal gratification & gain and other anti social behaviour by clergy and their laity needs to be urgently addressed. We have cases of church confidence tricksters currying favour into assets of vulnerable & elderly to get mentions in Wills, use of social media & other means to infiltrate & identify personal vulnerability for the purposes of targeting for sexual & monetary gain as in matter of Fr Ger Fitzgerald and the Killaloe women he approached in his capacity as a serving clergyman in The Diocese of Killaloe & under false pretences of homeless charity fundraising etc. The Roman Church management seems very cosy with international property gurus and even planning authorities here in Ireland all convenient contacts for them in the maximisation of its extensive property disposals around the world but it has outstanding debts to victims & survivors many of whom have died waiting for redress.

Can the Bishop of Killaloe ordain women deacons? Even if he could, I don’t think its going to happen until sanctioned by Rome. In the meantime, the ‘Women Of Killaloe’ might consider organizing to lobby their clergy for justice on matters such as CSA, rape of women religious in The Church, abuse of vulnerable adults, social justice in their local community; there’s a plethora of Church related issues of concern. Is there some other agenda at play? +Kieran O’Reilly cannot ordain women deacons, and was foolish to virtue signal to some parish council boomers. Pope Francis is in doubt, and the answer so far from those who studied the matter is negative. +Pat should know a deaconess meant meant who assisted with such things as assisting women candidates with the older custom of full immersion baptism. No sound evidence exists of ordained women deacons. None. Zip. Zero. Zilch.
Yet as @10:43 says there’s such an array of issues, sexual abuse of children and young males and females entering into the religious life. Worry about offices is less an issue compared to that. The issue is not, to my mind, that a priest or monk is in any way dangerous, but the rare predator could duck and dive his way to a depraved safety. Fr Andersen suffers immensely for his whistleblowing of whoopsie Kirby. One Youtuber wondered if Mr Ted McCarrick was behind a lot of bad appointments recently. Didn’t Pope Francis set up a commission to look at Deaconesses – a ruse, I’m sure. privately no political will and deeply entrenched clerical resistance to this sensible idea.
The clerical view is allowing the ordination of Deaconess a step on the way to ordaining priests.
What I don’t get is that St Peter wasn’t a priest or St Paul or St Francis – St Francis was a layman, he might have been a Deacon but I doubt it.
Lay people by virtue of baptism could and should baptise, conduct weddings and funerals. anoint the sick.
As for the other sacraments I get bishops ordaining but honestly I think the allocating confession to the most immature member of the community (emotionally, sexually and financially) is insane and a recipe for abuse.
The Eucharist is a wide open debate – what did the early Church do?
All of the above though is a pipe dream – a homosexual clerical caste would rather burn in hell than change the trappings and benefits of clericalism,

The forthcoming census breakdown of religious affiliation, or absence of, will prove interesting for N. Ireland. My guesstimate is that it will show decreased affiliation to the standard usual designations and an increase of “other”, or “No religion.” In that sense “the church” meaning the RCC is surely on the way out in the western world as active participation declines.
In ‘third world’ countries, proselytising activities by mainstream Western religious bodies may well maintain and increase participation largely I think, through their association with education and status.
However if one thinks of religion purely in terms of belief in some extra terrestrial power and an afterlife, I think this will remain indefinitely: it is readily embedded in the human psyche for many and propogated by cultural practices.

Out of respect for you MMM, I will just mention another variable which normal I wouldn’t because the catlicks love to deflect to anyone else. Currently there are several HUGE meltdowns of prominent Protestant bodies going on: Hillsong is mired in crime and the Southern Baptist Convention is experiencing what has been described as an ‘apocalypse’ over covered up abuse and deceit by leadership. Hillsong’s attendance has gone into free fall but the picture is more complex in the SBC. Recently on here the freefall in numbers of Catholics in Chile was mentioned.
I think the future of the religious world is far from set in stone (lol), I think there are going to be ongoing scandals for decades to come and the outcome of all this is literally going to be anyone’s guess.
Both Hillsong and SBC are international so the long term effects are likely to be wide ranging.
I am seeing a number of Christians who are basically unattached to any denomination, so it may even be that church looks very different in the decades to come, and denominations will have to deal with a lack of loyalty.
Significantly at their convention the Southern Baptists have voted out the leadership whose response was strikingly similar to the RC abuse minimizers, and also voted to have a register of credibly accused clergy.
Oh the things that happen when the people have a vote!

MMM, respectfully, Darwin’s Theory of natural selection shocked traditionalists in the 19th century simply because it permitted people to question their beliefs, assumptions, previously held notions, etc, about the origins of the universe, humankind, and all other species. It was an important paradigm shift in biological science which acted as a catalyst leading to revolutions of thought, questioning, furtherance of theory, etc, in other academic disciplines. Theory remains theory no matter how many ‘authority figures’ ‘believe’ theory to be fact. With respect, can I suggest, please try to broaden your purview. Shalom.

It means growing as a human being, using the skills you have to become a better person, better able to live with people, come to grips with celibacy, and better able to deal with people whom you will meet every day. Also missing on this blog is a vivid sense of the divine reality at work in our world and our lives. Our ancestors had a keen sense of this, which made them noble and upright people.

Like

4:50 is an interesting example of church speak.
Translated into English it actually comes out quite long:
‘ You won’t get the full picture from this blog which only focuses on certain things. What is missing is the church’s authorized perspective which is also identified with a sense of the divine. You can therefore assume that you find the divine in the church’s perspective but not on this blog. This divine perspective, which is only found being verbalised by the church, is equated with nobility and moral uprightness, neither of which you will find here’.
It’s an interesting way of having a pop at this blog and its owner, while implying ownership and control over the divine and suggesting that no view expressed on this blog can be divinely inspired or even used by God to inspire people into good works or reveal truth to them.
Luckily the answer to this is simple: Bollocks.

Like

4.50 A beautiful piece of music. Not sure our ancestors were that much different, enough manuscripts around to indicate that nobility and uprightness has always eluded this island. Saints and Scholars was a ruse after a very particular time in our history, the RCC used it for centuries.

Mise Eire: Most of our ancestors were quite ignorant of the ‘workings of the world.’ Our earliest ancestors attributed causation to unseen forces, anthropomorphized them, and self selected classes of leaders emerged who alleged to have understanding of, and an influential relationship with these powerful forces affecting humankind’s earthly life and destiny.
This process evolved worldwide over hundreds of thousands of years, and became formalised as society structured itself. This has led to institutional hierarchical patterns of religious practices in much of Western society and different practices elsewhere.
Those “noble and upright people” of the Inca or Aztec believed in the power of human sacrifice to their gods. And in the supposedly advanced Western society they believed the earth to be flat while the sun moved around it. Their “priests” told them so!

The photograph of Leonardo di Caprio handing His Holiness an envelope to the humble mans delight tells more than any words could ever capture.

Pat, may I ask you a personal question please. Do not feel the need to answer it off course, if I am being intrusive. How important do you think intimacy and sex is in a relationship?

Pat, what is your view of a relatively young priest who had a labourer’s job before seminary returning home dressed in a clerical shirt with collar and black trousers and a carrying a black umbrella going for long walks around his large home town and walking within the confines of the town not ‘out in the countryside’. It isn’t his parish, it is his home town.

7.50: Are you on weed? What a most stupid question. Simply innocuous. Recently Pat visited his home town Tullamore and other places close by in his full clericals. What’s the difference? Enlighten us.

Just watching the Church Militant reports on Bishop Stika.
Main take home:
If you get raped go to police immediately without washing or cleaning yourself in any way. And take a friend for support.
This is the most useful thing dealing with the Catholic church can teach you.

Pat, would you ordain trans or non binary persons? Would you ordain lesbians and gays as deacons and deaconnesses? With your liberal interpretation and rejection of church teachings, why is your Oratory Society not full of ordinands and candidates? You have 1 or 2 priests? What are your reasons for an empty seminary and no vocations?
