A priest has appeared in court accused of voyeurism by allegedly spying on a female for sexual thrills.
Father Aidan Patrick McCann (35) appeared at Craigavon Magistrates Court by videolink from his solicitor’s office and confirmed that he understood the single charge against him.
Fr McCann, with an address at the parochial house on Maddens Row in Keady, Co Armagh, is accused of voyeurism on March 28 this year in that “for the purpose of sexual gratification, he observed a female doing a private act knowing that the other person did not consent to being observed for your sexual gratification”.
None of the alleged facts surrounding the offence was opened in court on Friday but giving evidence to the court, Constable Mosgrove said she believed she could connect the priest to the offence.

I do, I wish I could get my boarding fees back from there, it was full to the brim of snobs and shitty lecturing, however, you did need a brain to get in there to stay for a year, it’s not a rehab. Despite all the controversies, in some way, we must admire the strength and determination of the monks. While commenters may be utterly cynical and desire inky thecwird on the monks, perhaps they are united in their spiritual quest to be fully renewed in Christ and live ascetically and in holy ways. I pray for them. Many of us fall daily, not just once but twice and three times. None of us is so pure in conscience before God. I still worry about these men but they seem to be in a new pathway. If even there is a scintilla of truth in what we read here and else where about Silverstream – gay behaviour / culture / atmosphere, questionable relationships, bullying and taking advantage of juniors, questionable financial and charitable money issues, – if even some of this is true, then somebody needs to get a grip and to sort it out. That person is probably the local bishop, and there appears to be no sign of him taking ownership. A small place like Silverstream with this list of dysfunctions should be suppressed. Any of the monks who seriously wish to continue a monastic vocation should be moved to other monasteries where they can continue. But, Silverstream as presently constituted needs to be no more. Any CEO would understand that there comes a point where the indicators are so strong that something is fundamentally wrong about a place that definite and firm action if required. Silverstream is at that point. Failure to do so will see its eventual demise coming even more catastrophically with all sorts of collateral damage. I do hope that Deenihan / Coffey / The Nuncio / whoever has some responsibility read what is being written here.

If Silverstream is to be suppressed, and I agree that it should be, then we should really also be talking about the suppression of many of our seminaries, which are hotbeds of homosexual culture and lifestyle. Places like Oscott. The VEC. Maynooth. And more. Both students and staff. There is something systemically wrong with these places that produce seminarians and priests who have an underlying homoerotic culture as part of their lives, usually entwined with a sense of their own importance and an attraction to liturgical and vestment antiquarianism. So many of them end up engaging in odd and dysfunctional behaviour, often criminal as we see in the case of McCamley, and so many of them don’t last too long and are gone by the 5 year or 10 year mark. Just looking at the statistics, you wonder why people are not asking very serious questions about these institutions. Surely we can do better. ? I do not object in the slightest to people expressing their sexuality, but given that seminarians undertake to be celibate by public vow, it is highly hypocritical that they indulge in this kind of behaviour and leads them to lead lives that are a lie, duplicitous, and damaging. If the RCC decides that it is content for its priests to be sexually active and gay, then fine I would have no problem with that. But given that they make such a thing about celibacy, then I think it is fair to point out that it is a myth and a lie for the most part. Most importantly it gnaws away at any credibility that the Church and clergy might still have, and that is not much at the moment. Being upfront, honest and open is the only way forward. If priests want to be homosexually active then the laws of the Church must change. Until that happens I do not think it unreasonable for me to expect them to keep their promises. And, if they don’t, then I don’t think it’s unreasonable for + Pat and people like me to point it out and to shame them.

Should we, at some stage, allow these men, in all their faults, imperfections and sinfulness the space to get in living the life they aspire to live? I merely ask. I visited this monastery in the early years and always found great welcome and kindness and recall a lovely spirit of prayer. Yes, much has happened to cause serious concerns but perhaps it’s time to let them move on with their lives. Pray for them. I just hope the awful ridiculing and belittling of these men does not affect their well being – spiritually, emotionally or mentally. So far these men gave withstood an artillery of fire and they are still standing…

Silverstream was canonically erected an Institute of Diocesan Right by the previous Bishop of Meath, Michael Smith. It is, therefore, the responsibility of the Ordinary of the diocese, Thomas Deenihan. I would suggest the reason Deenihan has not acted so far is he does not wish to be known that he is acting in response to pressure from His Excellency, the Most Reverend Bishop of Larne, Patrick Buckley.

There was no sarcasm. I was being mischievous. The harsh and hard reality is Deenihan does not want to be seen acting in response to Bishop Pat Buckley. Thinking about it some more if Silver stream Priory was to be suppressed, it would have major implications for the reputation of Abbot Coffey in Glenstal. It was Coffey who decided to confirm Dom Mark Kirby as the superior of Silverstream despite the allegations of misconduct that had been levelled against Kirby made by one of the other founders of the Priory, Dom Benedict Andersen.
And, I read again the article about Andersen’s experiences of Silverstream that was posted on the blog a few days ago.
The Pillar article clearly states: “Irish police and non-profit financial regulators continued investigating the possibility of wrongdoing at the monastery, some of which, Andersen has been told, will be passed onto prosecutors for possible criminal charges. Andersen said was told in recent months he might need to testify in criminal proceedings, especially regarding financial misconduct”.
Based on this paragraph, we can infer that An Garda Síochána were sufficiently convinced of the wrongdoing to refer the matter to the Director 0f Public Prosecutions. And this would have had major implications for Bishop Deenihan and by extension Abbot Coffey.
Eventually, Deenihan will be forced to deal with Silverstream, and everybody will know the Decree of suppression will ultimately flow from the misconduct at Silverstream that was exposed by + Pat Buckley.

Today on the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus we remember Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque a Sister of the Visitation Order. She helped to spread the devotion in the 1680’s. We also recall that Silverdtream, Stamullen was a convent of the Visitation Order. What s pity it didn’t remain so.

Bshop pat thank you for including the video of Father Aidan on your blog today. It is beautiful and I think, because of the day thats in it, Feast of the Sacred Heart, everyone reading this blog should take 5/10 minutes to look at it and pray for spiritual guidance and forgiveness. Whatever wrong Fr. Aidan has done, nobody is perfect and remember our God is a forgiving God. Pray for al those who need prayers at this time. Amen.

12.54: Jeremiah: I share your views and sentiments. The only purpose this video is put up is to elicit the usual vitriol against priests who morally fail. What Fr. Aidan did was abhorrent and morally wrong. This will haunt him for life. I do not believe it’s justifiable to ignominiously flatten people further into the ground following a court appearance. Pat should know the depth of such humiliation and pain. However much we may disapprove of another’s sinfulness, none of us in the name of CHRIST can ever make a mockery of any sinner. Look how Christ treated the woman caught in adultery? His wrath wasn’t for the condemned woman but for the self righteous judgers..When and if we each strip away our facade and honestly look therein, we may quickly run for cover. God help us all. I found solace through this video. Thank God.

11:16, I can’t speak for Bishop Pat but it seems to me that Silverstream continues to be fair game because of the continued acts of gross injustice against a victim and whistleblower, Fr Anderson, whose life as a religious and a priest has been destroyed merely because he dared to reveal his experiences and ask for help from the Bishop of Meath. The continued campaign to destroy Anderson is nothing less than satanic. Silverstream have brought it, and continue to bring it, on themselves. Thank God for Bishop Pat, who refuses to allow them to continue without being exposed.

Many of the titles are ones which can be found in absolute heaps in religious houses – Marmion was hugely popular before the council and many of his books are already available in reprint so I can’t think why they’re reprinting them again.
I was rather hoping that Pius de Hemptinne had vanished into history. That book has an unfortunate account of him deliberately cutting himself with a saw as an act of mortification. I think nowadays we understand better both that these type of mortification can be self harm or else have a sexual motivation.
And surely they won’t sell many copies of Tribute of Blood: A Wartime History of the Benedictine Nuns of Perpetual Adoration of Warsaw?

It’s really no surprise whatsoever that Silverstream is a hot bed of abuse, sexual, physical, mental, and spiritual. It’s precisely the kind of place that the current Pope does not want to exist in the Church, yet there it continues with the express approval and support of the Diocese of Meath and, more surprisingly, Glenstal Abbey.

As it happens there is a roundabout connection with Glenstal. Dom Pius was obviously of the same family (a nephew, I think) of Dom Hildebrand de Hemptinne, abbot primate and abbot of Maredsous, senior house of the Belgian congregation which is now the Annunciation Congregation.
Maredsous founded Glenstal and Glenstal’s patrons are SS Columba and Joseph in honour of Columba Marmion who also just happened to be Pius de Hemptinne’s either novice master or master of studies.
