AH! BONNY WEE SCOTLAND.

FROM ONE OF OUR SCOTTISH CORRESPONDENTS

Bishop Buckley,

If you go onto BBC News Scotland you will find an article entitled: ex priest awarded damages against church over childhood abuse. This article relates to former Blairs Spiritual Director, Fr Colman McGrath, who was convicted of abuse of seminarians. He was a colleague and friend of Archbishop Nolan who stayed faithful to him after conviction until his death. The name of the ex priest who has been awarded damages is not known (yet).

BBC SCOTLAND 2015

The Catholic Church has apologised after a retired priest admitted indecently assaulting three teenage boys in Aberdeen and Glasgow.

Colman McGrath, 76, abused two boys who were training to join the priesthood at Blairs College in Aberdeen and a boy at his parish in Langside, Glasgow.

The offences were committed between August 1972 and September 1982.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court, McGrath was told to carry out 200 hours unpaid work as part of a community payback order.

He was also placed on the sex offenders’ register and told he would be supervised for three years.

In a statement, the church said: “The Archdiocese of Glasgow wishes to apologise to the victims of Father Colman McGrath.

‘Root out evil’

“When the allegations were brought to his attention, Archbishop Tartaglia took steps to ensure that the police were informed.

“These allegations led to Colman McGrath’s eventual arrest, prosecution and conviction. The Archdiocese has cooperated fully with Police Scotland throughout the investigation.”

The statement added: “We are grateful to those affected for coming forward and would encourage anyone else with concerns relating to child protection issues to contact ourselves and the police.

“There can be no place in the Church for abuse of children and we are determined to root out this evil no matter how long ago it occurred.”

The court heard that McGrath was ordained as a priest in June 1962 and between August 1963 and June 1978 taught at Blairs College, where young men studied with a view to joining the priesthood.

He was then based at St Helen’s in Langside between 1979 and 1984.

The first charge, which spanned between August 1972 and June 1973, involved a 17-year-old boy at Blairs College.

McGrath was said to have commented on the boy’s skin condition before rubbing an oil-based substance on him after ordering the teenager to take off his clothes.

This happened on two occasions and on a third, McGrath struck the semi-naked boy with a slipper as a punishment.

In March 2014, the victim contacted the Archdiocese and reported the incidents.

Victim’s assaulted

The court was told the second victim – a 16-year-old pupil at Blairs – remembers four incidents between August 1973 and February 1974.

These involved him being hit on the buttocks with a hair brush.

The boy did not join the priesthood and later spoke to a priest about the abuse when his marriage broke down.

The final victim McGrath preyed on was a 14-year-old student struggling with maths who was sent to him for tutoring in September 1980 at St Helen’s in Langside.

He was hit with a belt when there was a mistake made during teaching sessions, before later being spanked by the priest.

The boy was made to take off his trousers and pants and was bent over the priest’s knees and was hit on the bottom with his hand.

The teenager left school not long after the abuse and reported it to the Archdiocese years later.

The court was told that McGrath told police in June 2014 that he remembered the boys involved but denied the allegations.

It was said on McGrath’s behalf that he said he could not recall the incidents rather than it being outright denial.

LMcGrath, through is lawyer, made an “unreserved and full apology” to all three victims and said that they “feature regularly in the prayers of the accused”.

The new Vicar General of Motherwell, Fr Raymond Breslin, has the same domestic arrangements as the former Vicar General of Glasgow”.

Docherty the DICKtator and PP of KIlsyth has been moved due to concerns and his disgusting resistance to the synod and because the people despise him and are threatening a petition if he’s not moved. She has been moved to Falkirk as the PP there,

The more we hear of Scotland the worse it seems.

Most priests there are gay and actively so.

There is the occasional heterosexual in the Land of the Kilt.

The Scottish RCC is rotten.

It is unfair and terrible to come down so harshly on priests for their moral failings: Satan tempts them more severely than the rest of us. This means in reality that the Devil is behind these failings, not the priests. We should always bear this in mind, especially the victims. Victims should offer their pain for the moral improvement of these priests instead of running willy nilly to the police to report their so-called crimes.
Priests need our compassion, understanding and prayers, not our condemnation. It is sinful and cowardly to abandon priests when they are under attack by the demons.

Howling. A brilliant caricature of how Roman Catholics see things. Unfortunately they won’t recognize the veracity.

Read Matt 4:1-11
It matters not what we are tempted with, it matters how we respond to the offer.
It priests are tempted more, is it not what we volunteered for, we’re trained for, why we pray…

Like

I would love to respond to your comment, HG, but Pat might not publish my words. He didn’t publish my last post. Very uneven handed.

Like

Okay, Pat. Here goes.

HG, Jesus, being God, had the innate strength to reject satanic temptation every time it arose; priests do not. So it does, very much indeed, matter how people are tempted: the stronger the temptation, the more difficult it is to resist.

For such strength, we rely on God principally, but also on one another, for prayer and support. However, if priests are not praying, they wilfully cut themselves loose from divine grace, and become far easier prey for Evil.

In this, the failing priests bear fundamental moral responsibility, but do not forget that Evil is at work, too, in order to exploit every person’s innate moral weakness; and it will do this ceaselessly, unhindered by actual grace, until a person becomes so entrenched in moral decrepitude it would damn itself were it to die at that moment.

Like

Are we not supposed to believe that Jesus was 100 % human and tempted to the same degree as all of us?

Like

Yes, Pat, Jesus was, like us, 100% human, but, unlike us, he was also 100% divine, with all the moral advantages this brings (including the innate strength to say “no” to temptation every time).
In Matt 4: 1 through 11 Jesus tells Satan that one may not tempt God, but it is clear that Satan could tempt the incarnate God, Jesus. In this lies the “why” of divine incarnation: that God might be tempted. The only way he could be tempted was to experience the weakness of human nature, and, with the strength of God, overcome it.

Like

11.03 that’s all right then, you are obviously one of these community priest protectors peeking out from under their skirts now & then so you will no doubt be equally understanding when Satan “tempts” the recipients of wrong doing by you & your priestly “friends”, we don’t think! Of course, thr Scottish RCC is corrupt to its core. Its head Cardinal Keith O’Brien was a predatory homosexual. Moving him to Falkirk is a bad idea as it’s his home patch.
Current PP, Boyle, is very unpopular. He is unable to make eye contact with a single parishioner. Very cold fish. Has a coterie of “friends”. Very pally with one of the (male) organists. Boyle is more often on holiday or in a “day off” than actually on call in the parish house.

Pat, for all the sinful stories, sensationalist headlines, salacious accounts – it’s all in vain. The Scottish Conference of Bishops know what’s going on. They accept it. The authority of the nuncio has no teeth and, even if it did, he reports to a “Pope” in Rome who a significant proportion of the faith neither respect, recognise nor take seriously. He’s filled the college with sycophantic heretics made from his own image, and you wonder what Oscott seminarians are given the keys to parishes throughout the land.
Nothing will come of any of this. That was evident post-Despard. They rounded together and set the direction for the foreseeable.
It’s over. The Daisy Chain has won.

Really not being funny but the church has spent the past few decades in the public eye showing its lack of respect for everything and everybody, including its own pretend religion. Oh the irony after that if the ‘faithful’ don’t respect the pope. 🤣

A Tipperary chap got sent off for throwing a hurley. Surely it was going to be Offaly’s day? With the last play of the game, Tipperary scored a goal and won by a point!
Séamus Darby famously scored a goal in 1982. On this Sunday, nearly 40 years later, Offaly were the victims of late goal drama. This late goal drama isn’t good for the old heart! 😉

I work in a parish in Scotland. Nominally I have c1500 parishioners. Last night at Vigil there were 16 at Mass.
To my surprise during a chat with some of them after Mass the subject of a recent ordination came up. The alleged reputation of the new priest was raised along with other matters which have featured in blogs by both yourself and Catholic Truth Scotland.
These diehard catholics said that these matters were scandalising the Faithful and these things are common knowledge among parishioners.
Today at Mass there was a congregation of 32 !!

I agree. I am in Motherwell Diocese, and reckon the bishop will have to close at least 60% of his churches to keep the diocese afloat financially. Our parish numbers have fallen to about a fifth of what they were 10 years ago. There is now no Children’s Liturgy on a Sunday as there are no children at Mass. You can see by the demographic that the numbers will plummet to unsustainable levels in the next 10 years. I am in advanced years, so am lucky that I will probably not witness this once-proud diocese’s decline. I don’t envy the bishop his job.
We have had a number of ordinations in the diocese in the last decade, but it is clear that the priesthood has become a gay profession.
