The Catholic Church in Dublin is going to cash in on the property price boom by selling off unused buildings and land.
Parochial houses in parishes where there are now no longer priests are top of the list for sale.
The Archbishop of Dublin, Dermot Farrell, is hiring a full-time property expert to work on the portfolio.
The move could potentially net tens of millions of euro for the archdiocese.
The sell-off comes as the church hierarchy in the capital merges parishes because of the shortage of priests
A Property Asset Manager is being recruited to devise a strategy on sales. The expert will have “significant property transaction experience, including managing complex transactions through to completion”.
Properties owned across the 197 parishes of the diocese include churches, parochial houses, parish halls and associated lands.

Bishop Ray Browne wishes to announce the following changes of appointment of clergy of the Diocese of Kerry:
Retirements:
Fr. Tom Leane, PP Dromtariffe
Appointments:
Fr. Joseph Begley Glengarriff to the Killarney Pastoral area and to minister in Killarney.
Fr. Jim Lenihan Killarney to the Killarney Pastoral area and to be PP Glenflesk.
Fr. Niall Howard Killarney to the Kenmare Pastoral area and to be PP Glengarriff.
Fr. Sean Jones St. John’s, Tralee to the Killarney Pastoral area and to minister in Killarney.
The parish of Dromtariffe will be served by the priests of the Duhallow/Sliabh Luchra Pastoral Area, with Fr. Jack Fitzgerald as Moderator.
Priests of all Pastoral Areas of the Diocese take up additional responsibilities outside their own parishes and within the Pastoral Area. This will be decided and communicated locally.

Fr. Kieran Dunne will be coming to Glasnevin as curate.
Fr. Joseph Ryan (Ballygall) has been appointed as Moderator of the Glasnevin Grouping of Parishes.
In neighbouring Finglas, Fr. Richard Hyland is being appointed as PP of the three parishes: St. Canice’s, Rivermount and Finglas West.
Fr. Martin Hogan comes as curate
Fr. Eamon Cahill retires but continues as Team assistant.
All moves take place in mid-July.

Yesterday afternoon at 3 pm we received Seamus’ body into The Oratory.
It was a small family and friends occasion and the well known Irish flautist BARRY KERR provided a fine musical tribute.
FUNERAL MASS LIVENON FACEBOOK LIVE AT 3 PM WEDNESDAY 13TH JULY.
Seamus will now rest in The Oratory until Wednesday afternoon.
His body will be cremated on Thursday and his ashes buried in Gurteen on Sunday afternoon.

Many if them were addicts.
Many of them robbed me.
A few went on to great success.
Many homeless refused to come off the streets.

Pat, the problem is you can’t just do that with buildings.
It’s complicated enough if you’re a private individual because you wouldn’t be able to insure the building unless the residents fulfill certain criteria, which would include being employed or on certain benefits.
So basically you could just let anyone sleep in it but you’d have to be prepared to lose the building and not insure it.
Doing that with a charity asset would be a nightmare.

When Bishop Leo McCartie was dean of Birmingham Cathedral, he opened up the crypt for homeless men, and one caused a fire and died in it. The project soon ended. I guess there are risks of opening up church property to people who may have mental health problems without adequate supervision.

The clerical culture, as evinced on these pages, is so sad. Lonely men desperately tying to find some meaning and sense in their lives, particularly in terms of affection, love, relationships and being important to someone. That is the hobbling effect of enforced mandatory celibacy, leading men in to unhappy, isolated and very often dysfunctional lives, and, as we have seen, some in to abusive criminality. It is such a shame that otherwise decent men were led in to this kind of life when they were young and believed all the nonsense about prayer and relationship with God and Mary etc would sustain you, Well, as the majority know from their own lives, that is not the case. To take away or deprive someone of a basic human need such as affection / love / human warmth / relationship is controlling and abusive, and I think the Church in decades to come will have to answer for this destruction of so many lives. Just as they have had to answer for so many other sins and crimes that have been committed by the Church, in the name of the Church, and by priests and bishops of the Church.

11.02: Occasionally we get high quality comments on this blog, well thought through, insightful, intelligent and challenging but without the usual insulting and degrading rhetoric. Thank you “so sad..”! It stands out compared to the proliferation of comments from Mr. Mulvihill! I agree with you about the clerical culture. It is so easy to fall into such a culture as mostly we are answerable to ourselves and because we live alone we don’t always notice the pitfalls and patterns of behaviour we may be trapped in. The absence of meaningful, intimate, nourishing human relationships and lack of a normal deep interaction with others is a sure recipe for personal dysfunctionality. Most of us are survivors through the unnatural expectations of celibacy which literally requires a denial of our sexuality and humanity. It is imperative for priests to look after themselves psychologically, mentally and spiritually. We are in very difficult times in the Church and in priesthood. Have I been damaged by being a priest and by belonging to the Church? Possibly in some ways but I ensure I keep a reality check on my life as best I can. Some are very wounded and need professional help. On reflection, I would be very loathe to encourage any man to choose priesthood unless he has worked for some time in the market place. There are too many variables and expectations in our lives and most of us are at an age where we’ve passed our high levels of energy, ability to be dedicated and are often in a spiritual abyss, not having imagination, vision or the power of sustainability.

Yep, Birmingham is heading for big trouble. The new chief exec has been going on about cutbacks and redundancies. Collections are well down. Liabilities, including payouts, are up considerably. There is a moribund atmosphere about the diocese, old priests staying on and on, only to be replaced by Third World clergy, about which there should be considerable disquiet. + Longley, while pleasant, is keen for a quiet life and will not rock the boat. He leaves the distasteful stuff to others. The cathedral is closed most of the time, with very limited activities, but a considerable lay staff. The dean likes a quiet life, too ! So, all in all, it is quite a depressing picture. Perhaps the best thing is for it to fold, and see what new emerges. Maybe that is what the Spirit is leading us to. But, it’s bloody depressing in the meantime. I don’t even think they realise that the Commonwealth Games 2022 take place in a couple of weeks. I mean, it would demand some interest and effort, wouldn’t it. That’s not the modus operandi of Birmingham clergy.

I note that Fr Richard Sheehy is being moved from PP Glasnevin to PP Brackenstown, Swords, and also becoming an Episcopal Vicar. What a great and humble servant of the Dublin Archdiocese. When PP in Rathmines, he initiated a thriving Sunday evening Folk Mass, filled with young adults from all over the world. He was once a TCD chaplain, alongside Fr Paul (Murphy?) who moved to the US. He is also related to the late Conor Cruise O’Brien. Do you know him Bishop Pat? He is one of the good guys. Another priest in a similar mode is Canon Pat Browne (chaplain to the UK Parliament and PP in Pimlico, Westminster). Due to retire next year and probably return to Ireland to enjoy time with family and friends.

1.40: Richard Sheehy is indeed a very good person and a dedicated priest. The Folk Group Mass has a tradition which predates Richard by many, many years. He built on what be was given. He was a very well respected Chaplain at Trinity, his father being a noted member of the legal profession.

Talking of property, why does the PP of Enniskillen want to demolish the parochial house and replace it with a three-bedroom house, when across the street the curates’ house has five self-contained flats (each with a kitchen, sitting room, bathroom and bedroom) but only one of the five flats is occupied. Peter O’Reilly could move into one of them.

The NAMA guy they appointed as Director of Property in Maynooth will surely get them a better deal than the last time, when the college sold a 999 year lease of the north campus to Maynooth University for a pittance and for far below its market value.

Funny to think of them making lay staff redundant as they had a flurry of spend, spend, spend before the pandemic – plus their accounts show the CEO is on £100k and HR on £80k – considerably more than your bog standard PP!!
Easy to make others redundant whilst protecting your own dubious salary.
A recipe for disaster – but yes Nursey and the Dean both rather timid, cowardly men, ever keen for others to do the heavy lifting and take all the flack.
I swear Birmingham is populated by African, Indian and Asian clergy – the rest are old, tired and fed up and still more are active homosexuals running amok and living the dream.
Combine that with a disastrous IICSSA and Quigley and Jolly, Walsh, Taylor, Penny et al and you’ve got a dysfunctional organisation par excellence.
