DUBLIN ARCHDIOCESE TO CASH IN IN ON PROPERTY PRICE BOOM BY SELLING OFF UNUSED PAROCHIAL HOUSES.

DERMOT FARRELL

Irish Independent

https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/catholic-church-to-cash-in-on-property-price-boom-by-selling-off-empty-parochial-homes-41831377.html

The Catholic Church in Dublin is going to cash in on the property price boom by selling off unused buildings and land.

Parochial houses in parishes where there are now no longer priests are top of the list for sale.

The Archbishop of Dublin, Dermot Farrell, is hiring a full-time property expert to work on the portfolio.

The move could potentially net tens of millions of euro for the archdiocese.

The sell-off comes as the church hierarchy in the capital merges parishes because of the shortage of priests

A Property Asset Manager is being recruited to devise a strategy on sales. The expert will have “significant property transaction experience, including managing complex transactions through to completion”.

Properties owned across the 197 parishes of the diocese include churches, parochial houses, parish halls and associated lands.

PAT SAYS

We are now seeing why Dermot Ledwith Farrell was really sent to Dublin.

It was to put Dublin b)ack in the black after Diarmuid wrecked it with international flights and € 50,000 kitchens 😀

There will be all kinds of buildings and land sold off now.

I might even pick up a little North County Dublin church for myself if I get a sponsor 😀

What’s happened to Diarmuid Sheehan, the PP of the D&C parish in Coleraine? He has been replaced by the PP of Portrush also taking on Coleraine on top of his other parishes, but no move is listed for Diarmuid and he’s not even mentioned. Is he MIA?

Like

10.25 No, not old news until his location has been identified & exactly why he is MIA???

Like

He has left on medical grounds supposedly had major back surgery . I herd another story , allegedly myra traynor got rid of him

There cannot be that much of a vocations crisis in D&C when they still have a rake of desk priests, eg Fr Grant, Fr Fox, Fr Eugene O’Hagan and the priest press officer. They could take on some of the north coast parishes.

Why, incidentally, is there a stray O.Praem in a D&C parish? Are they not supposed to live in community?

Like

Down and Connor has about six desk priests. Any PP asked to take on three parishes should be giving out to the bishop.

Like

A White Father, I think, but it’s surprising that they don’t thank him and say he is returning to his order, which is what you might expect them to say if that is the case.

Like

There’s two more “order” priests in North Antrim: Hugh O’Kane SMA, and Liam Blayney SPS. Both now in late 70’s I think. Are they still working?

Like

At least DLF is getting in a property expert, unlike Dermo, who personally handled the sale of Clonliffe, with the diocese ending up seriously shortchanged. That was a disaster.

Father Aidan Keenan didn’t get a mention or thanks. Very unfair the biggest D&C Parish of Nativity left without a PP. 3 good priests looking after 5 Parishes. Father McCann, Father Crossey and Father Rory Sheehan. Great priests but responsibility for the largest area in D&C

Pat, the problem is you can’t just do that with buildings.
It’s complicated enough if you’re a private individual because you wouldn’t be able to insure the building unless the residents fulfill certain criteria, which would include being employed or on certain benefits.
So basically you could just let anyone sleep in it but you’d have to be prepared to lose the building and not insure it.
Doing that with a charity asset would be a nightmare.

The clerical culture, as evinced on these pages, is so sad. Lonely men desperately tying to find some meaning and sense in their lives, particularly in terms of affection, love, relationships and being important to someone. That is the hobbling effect of enforced mandatory celibacy, leading men in to unhappy, isolated and very often dysfunctional lives, and, as we have seen, some in to abusive criminality. It is such a shame that otherwise decent men were led in to this kind of life when they were young and believed all the nonsense about prayer and relationship with God and Mary etc would sustain you, Well, as the majority know from their own lives, that is not the case. To take away or deprive someone of a basic human need such as affection / love / human warmth / relationship is controlling and abusive, and I think the Church in decades to come will have to answer for this destruction of so many lives. Just as they have had to answer for so many other sins and crimes that have been committed by the Church, in the name of the Church, and by priests and bishops of the Church.

Thank you “so sad..”! It stands out compared to the proliferation of comments from Mr. Mulvihill! I agree with you about the clerical culture. It is so easy to fall into such a culture as mostly we are answerable to ourselves and because we live alone we don’t always notice the pitfalls and patterns of behaviour we may be trapped in. The absence of meaningful, intimate, nourishing human relationships and lack of a normal deep interaction with others is a sure recipe for personal dysfunctionality. Most of us are survivors through the unnatural expectations of celibacy which literally requires a denial of our sexuality and humanity. It is imperative for priests to look after themselves psychologically, mentally and spiritually. We are in very difficult times in the Church and in priesthood. Have I been damaged by being a priest and by belonging to the Church? Possibly in some ways but I ensure I keep a reality check on my life as best I can. Some are very wounded and need professional help. On reflection, I would be very loathe to encourage any man to choose priesthood unless he has worked for some time in the market place. There are too many variables and expectations in our lives and most of us are at an age where we’ve passed our high levels of energy, ability to be dedicated and are often in a spiritual abyss, not having imagination, vision or the power of sustainability.

Wonder what the property portfolio of Dublin equates to – approx – ballpark
Birmingham are shedding a load of property too – redundancies are a coming as is a raft of litigation for child abuse – Joe Quigleys victims are owed a massive pay out!!
With Mass going population at 22,000 down from 85000 I’d say that’s their only option – can’t see them thinking more creatively than sell the properties!!
The Vatican has a property portfolio of over 5000 buildings around the world and they have the nerve to collect Peters Pence from the poor!

Like

Yep, Birmingham is heading for big trouble. The new chief exec has been going on about cutbacks and redundancies. Collections are well down. Liabilities, including payouts, are up considerably. There is a moribund atmosphere about the diocese, old priests staying on and on, only to be replaced by Third World clergy, about which there should be considerable disquiet. + Longley, while pleasant, is keen for a quiet life and will not rock the boat. He leaves the distasteful stuff to others. The cathedral is closed most of the time, with very limited activities, but a considerable lay staff. The dean likes a quiet life, too ! So, all in all, it is quite a depressing picture. Perhaps the best thing is for it to fold, and see what new emerges. Maybe that is what the Spirit is leading us to. But, it’s bloody depressing in the meantime. I don’t even think they realise that the Commonwealth Games 2022 take place in a couple of weeks. I mean, it would demand some interest and effort, wouldn’t it. That’s not the modus operandi of Birmingham clergy.

I note that Fr Richard Sheehy is being moved from PP Glasnevin to PP Brackenstown, Swords, and also becoming an Episcopal Vicar. What a great and humble servant of the Dublin Archdiocese. When PP in Rathmines, he initiated a thriving Sunday evening Folk Mass, filled with young adults from all over the world. He was once a TCD chaplain, alongside Fr Paul (Murphy?) who moved to the US. He is also related to the late Conor Cruise O’Brien. Do you know him Bishop Pat? He is one of the good guys. Funny to think of them making lay staff redundant as they had a flurry of spend, spend, spend before the pandemic – plus their accounts show the CEO is on £100k and HR on £80k – considerably more than your bog standard PP!!
Easy to make others redundant whilst protecting your own dubious salary.
A recipe for disaster – but yes Nursey and the Dean both rather timid, cowardly men, ever keen for others to do the heavy lifting and take all the flack.
I swear Birmingham is populated by African, Indian and Asian clergy – the rest are old, tired and fed up and still more are active homosexuals running amok and living the dream.
Combine that with a disastrous IICSSA and Quigley and Jolly, Walsh, Taylor, Penny et al and you’ve got a dysfunctional organisation par excellence.
No wonder Pat Browne, Eddie Clare and John Gilbert and others got the hell out of Dodge.

He said action has to be taken and (rightly, imo) suggests ordaining married and women BUT doesn’t mention the elephants in the room so doesn’t really have a solution at all.

Like

OK, so you ordain women and married but that doesn’t solve the problem of the imminent demographic wipeout once the boomers and older go to their reward. The Novus Ordo is shockingly unpopular and its devotees have not passed on the Faith. There is nobody coming after them.

” There is very little that boy doesn’t know.” That’s a direct quote from Sean Brady to John Connolly before he knew we well regarded one another. Friends. Another very good man. Has got sense now too.

Yesterdays blog update.
The Comms Director for the Scottish Bishops states that NO Archbishop or Bishop in Scotland has received the letter that was sent to Patricia Mckeever that appered on this blog from Father Stephen Dunn and it would be interesting to receive it from him.
Looks like a letter to the converted on Catholic Truth Scotland and a windoow of oppertunity on this blog too.

Joe Mullan. John Collins. Donal Roche. Same class Maynooth. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Not in that order.

OMG. The very mention of their names sends shudders up my spine, one is half decent one is pure weird and the third is a Northern bully

8.54 Donal is half decent. John Collins is pure weird. Joe Mullan is a Northern bully. Would that be accurate ?

The top story over at the The Pillar is “Monk alleges abuse – and retaliation – at Silverstream Priory” (Aug. 17, 2021). It has surpassed even the story about Jeffrey Burrill (Monsignor Grindr) in clicks. Is Tom Deenihan really hoping that the Silverstream / Mark Kirby / Benedict Andersen story is just going to disappear?

What was more interesting was Dom Benedict andersom gave a talk in Fota liturgical conference way back then as his name was listed as one of the speakers. Mother Burke was there as usual at that time.

Photos of him at fota liturgical conference out now at their website plus 2 videos as well.

This DG is on once again at his usual with his insulting remarks about that excellent Prelate His Eminence Leo Cardinal Burke. You’re such a bore you never stop with the same old insults, get a grip. There are plenty of others much more deserving of your insults.

If you go to google.com or google.co.uk you can search a particular site by putting its name in the search box with what you’re looking for.
