New propo0sals on the restructuring of parishes in the Archdiocese of Dublin will buy the church between five and ten years at most because the situation is “critical”, a senior priest has warned.
Fr Aquinas Duffy, parish priest of Cabinteely, who is also Vicar Forane for up to 15 parishes in the Bray Deanery in Dublin, made his comments after it emerged that a total of 34 priests in the diocese have died since February 2020, the youngest of whom was just 52.
Anybody who works in parishes can see the structures are collapsing around us. The time for talk is over; concrete action needs to be taken,” he said. “This crisis has been coming for many years, but Covid has pushed us further over the cliff.”
He said the new move to appoint a parish priest to multiple parishes would put huge pressure on priests.
As part of its plans for radical change to offset the impact of a declining and ageing clergy, the Archdiocese of Dublin’s new strategy, “Building Hope”, has asked parishioners to identify nearby parishes with whom they can share resources in terms of finances, personnel and volunteers

But he has no priests and seminarians!
The Church was not founded to be a big estate agency.
It was founded to be a spiritual society.
They have plenty of money.
But few priests, no seminarians and a quickly disappearing congregation.
So what’s the point anymore?
Most Catholics do no attend Mass or church regularly anymore.
They do continue to use churches and priests for Christenings, weddings and funerals.
But that’s it because they believe. It’s only because that’s traditional and they have not found an alternative.
But the Christenings are not acts of faith. They are really just a way of naming their child so they can have a bit party.
Their weddings are not acts of faith either. They are there for the nice gothic building and their photographs of it.
The funerals are not acts of faith either. Its just that they don’t want to bury their granny in the back garden.
So the situation has devevelooed whereby priests turn a blind eye to lack of faith. The couples get the nice pics and Father gets a few quid.
By all means get your finances right.
But if the priority is not Faith and Spirituality ans Pastoral Care does the RCC ot become just another financial institution?

Bishops must know that, on the rare occasions that they ordain a new priest, the reasonable assumption is that the new priest will serve one or two years in his first parish, apparently happily, before suddenly having a crisis, discovering himself, coming out of the closet and packing in ministry after four or five years.

They are losing the bouncy castle Catholics too. My son’s primary school recently put up old Confirmation photos. In 1989, 21 pupils from the school were confirmed. This year, 8 were confirmed. Only 1 of the 8 children has been seen at Sunday Mass subsequently.

It must be depressing for priests to realise that they have become funeral officiants, mainly. Funerals and weddings are the only times they see a crowd at church, and when they comment here about how busy they are, the busyness seems to consist in having to do three or four funerals a week.

We are encouraged to welcome all visitors like Christ. The preparation for the sacraments and the sacraments themselves present an opportunity to meet with these people.

Don’t panic, Maynooth is producing lay BATheol students, up from the country, who’ll replace the priests. No sacraments, mind you, but you can’t have everything, and what they don’t know about animating a parish and being Church isn’t worth talking about.

Pat, you have, sadly, chosen to interpret realities in church and priesthood in a very shallow, cynical way. If you say that those who present for baptisms, sacraments, wedfings and funerals have no real faith or that no faith is present, that is a a negative judgment. I am presuming that those who come to you are not any more full of faith than those who ask our support and presence. If that was true, then your oratory should be overflowing. I believe in maximising each moment as an encounter with Christ for all who come for such celebrations. I’ve had many people express their gratitude for the words spoken, the depth of preparation, rhe sense of empathy and kindness towards all, irrespective of who they are. We are in a wasteland of a kind but we make the best of moments given to say something encouraging, affirming and reassuring to all who are listening. Life has changed considerably for society. Faith and its expression is easier to desert than ever before. People make distinctions between religious faith and spirituality. They feel freer to choose their own way to God. It is not correct to say that priests turn a blind eye to the absence of faith in people. We, along with parish teams do much preparation with sacramental celebration: we have a funeral ministry team, bereavement support group and the priests meet families 2 or 3 times before a funeral. I think Pat you find the same reality: now we take people where they’re at and work with God’s spirit and with trust and respect with those who seek our help. It’s a little too cynical to dismiss financial concerns. Finances ate necessary but I believe most of us focus on the evangelizing aspect of our ministry as best we can at these pivotal moments. You never know how far words of kindness, empathy and compassion will travel to the heart of another who is open to receiving a message. Pat, I suggest you read, when available, the findings of the BUILDING HOPE INITIATIVE. There you’ll find the people of God speaking along with priests and money doesn’t feature. So, let’s not create fantasies and lies about issues that are not the focal point. Pat, I’m sure you have witnessed a huge falling off in religious practise. We offer the best we can – hopefully- and trust God will enliven those who desire more. Its nit always the fault of the priest…

9.10 and 9.55: Thank you for your responses to my comments at 11.53am. I well understand the crisis were in re: faith and practice, rituals and people’s responses. The point I am making is, that in the face of apathy, indifference, lack of faith, the crisis in our Church and priesthood, the challenge is, not to moan about or judge people in any way but to speak with kindness of heart to them, to reaffirm their faith if possible and to encourage. Yes, we may never see families between one rite of passage to another but we must make the best of any faith encounter we have with people. I’m sure our predecesdors are turning in their graves – yours included – not just about loss of religious faith and various scandals – but also at the breakdown of the moral and religious fabric of our society with its individualism and the “my body, my life, my choice philosophy and ideology”!!

As you know it takes seven years and the last year must now be spent in a Parish with the changes.
Scotland has 12 over the next seven years which is shocking as Archbishop Tartaglia said he needs at least four a year well September will see the last for seven years unless single mature men come forward and can be done in four years.
No one is coming forward even for the Diaconate.
The Spiritual Director of Scots College is not being replaced by another Priest as one of the current leacutures Priest have to do it as well.
Scotland is crying for Leadership and strong Leadership at that.

Lay people who are enthusiastic about their faith – see them as threat, bitch about them and undermine them.
The thought that they are dispensable and lay people can do things they can do.
Permanent Deacons
Hard work
Not being the centre of attention- it’s always all about them.
The Bible – they intimidate easily if you are a lay person who reads the Bible.
They loathe lay people with degrees, masters or PhDs in theology
Their bishops – they bitch about them all day long

New initiatives which they commit to destroying.

Permanent deacons and lay pastoral workers are prime examples of “moving deckchairs on the Titanic”. Replacing one cadre with another (and parishes losing access to most sacraments in the process) is no solution when everybody under the age of 60 is lapsed and all young Irish people hate the Church, despite or because of 15 or 16 years of Catholic school education.

Permanent deacons serve a very useful purpose and are often a great asset to priests Some priests are hostile towards them as are laity but they should be used more effectively by bishops. There should be more permanent deacons running parishes on their own. That is the answer.

Thinking about the comment above about it taking seven years to train and many comments recently about so many priests dropping out quickly, the whole trouble and expense could be saved by testing their arousal to pictures of naked men using Penile plethysmography. Those attracted to men could then just not start training at all and save all the trouble, expense and scandal.
You may say that there would be no priests but since you’re saying that anyway this would actually be a significant saving in resources.
So everyone who says there are no constructive suggestions on this blog can shut up.

I estimate that there are between 50 and 60 Irish diocesan priests doing non-jobs outside their own Irish diocese. Recall them and also force the desk priests into parishes, even though they’ll scream and scream until they are sick.

We have a priest in our parish in W&L who belongs to Meath diocese. Apparently it was agreed between Bishop Tom and Bishop Phonsie that he would relocate to W&L for 3Years. No reason was given by him except that he felt like a change of diocese. I thought it strange as they are supposed to be very short of priests in Meath and there was no shortage in our parish as we already had two priests and two retired helping out.

The relevance these deaf cousins knew that MON is going out with a married man in Belfast. I thought she was married but they said ‘yes’ and divorced.
There were some famous names especially in the drug world in Ireland as they have one thing in common was- their deaf siblings. Deaf siblings were advised by their drug toting fathers or brothers to leave Ireland for their own sake which they did. Their brothers were shot dead in cold daylight many years ago. I am from Galway and applied for diaconate in Tuam diocese. I went for interview to the parochial House in Ballyhaunis and when I walked up the drive I heard the PP roaring inside, saying what do you want, get back to where you come from. This man is a header. He interviewed me but I felt very uneasy after the incident. Tuam diocese is no different from other dioceses corrupted. This priest wants to close the church down. I never felt so bad as I did that day, he made me feel unwelcome. I always wanted to be a priest and serve the church but I was shocked at his attitude. I discovered recently that he hired 3 married men one from Poland. I am a single man. Bishop Duffy , the sly Cavan man appointed him to senior position in the diocese. Duffy is only a few weeks in the job. He hasn’t a clue. There is also another lad who was made a priest in 2019/2020 he was cc in westport but the decided to go to join a group in Switzerland. He is supposedly a twink.

My 12 year old son has announced that he’s no longer going to Mass, because he said it’s boring. For the last few Sunday’s he’s been pretending to be sick, to avoid it.
I have to say that I agree with him. It’s much too long, with four or five hymns, three sermons (one at the start, the actual homily, and final words just before the blessing at the end). It takes over an hour and the Novus Ordo is a torrent of words from start to finish, so to a child it must seem like being at an hour-long lecture aimed at adults.
I’m not going to force him to go.

Seeing as how all young priests leave after 4-5 years to run off with other men, would it help the vocations crisis if we stopped pretending it’s a lifelong commitment, but instead get people to sign up for 5 years, renewable, a bit like a short service commission in the British Army? Obviously we would have to shorten the formation period to make it more proportionate to the length of years that are typically served.

We have a young man with Down Syndrome who serves at mass and is as dedicated as possible. One day he was found in the sacristy saying mass with incredible devotion and utmost sincerity. I am sure Jesus would be happy with him standing in his persona at the altar. Catechists could provide homilies etc.
