THE CHURCH AND BOUNCY CASTLE CATHOLICS.

The Roman Catholic Church is going to have to decide between teaching its basic teachings, even and especially when unwelcome, or changing its teachings, either because they changing or to simply please “the world”.

1. The RCC teaches that masturbation is a mortal sin that can lead to hell. The world regards this teaching as nonsense.

2. The RCC teaches that sex before marriage is a mortal sin. Others disagree.

3. The RCC teaches that having an abortion or assisting someone to have one is a mortal sin, and attracts the penalty of automatic excommunication. Others, including practising Catholics, take another view.

4. The RCC teaches that homosexual acts are disordered and mortally sinful. The world now marries people engaging in them.

And there are other Church teachings.

So, the RCC has a decision to make.

Up to now it has sat on the fence trying to be all things to all men and women.

They need to tell us whether or not the teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church still apply in 2022.

Of course if they insist on their traditional teachings more and more people will walk away.

If they change their teachings they will be accused, especially by the RC Right of having sold out the faith.

Currently the RCC is morally ambitious.

First the archbishop of San Francisco refuses Nancy Pelosi Holy Communion.

Then the pope and Vatican give her Communion.

The RCC needs to declare their bottom line teachings – and then stick with them.

Of course, the other big problem is that bishops and priests who represent the Church globally are themselves involved in all kinds of sinful and immoral behaviour – and excusing themselves.

Remember Ger Fitzgerald’s crazy statement:

“My canon lawyer tells me I did nothing wrong – except to be immoral”

That very statement is a summary of the lack of morals of bishops and priests.

And that’s why most people write them off now as total hypocrites!

Dear Bishop Pat- they have often written you off and dismissed you as a hypocrite over the years but I have always defended you, even though my family ridiculed me. You were very good to my great-granny in Divis years ago and when people rant on about you, I always stand up for you. I would love to meet you sometime if you’d be open to going for a nice lunch.

Pat, I commented about Ivanka Trump and her wonderful, quiet, hidden work in Dublin with vulnerable young people years ago. Unfortunately it was just before the new blog piece went up but I really think people should know about this wonderful woman. Although her husband is an acquired taste, she herself did so much offering beauty therapy and make up courses for young girls in Ballymun and giving young people opportunities for employment. She deserves to be remembered and celebrated.

Rest in Peace, Mrs Trump. Josie, I hope that you have let the newspapers know as this is not known in Ireland – it would be nice if the people of Ballymun would ensure that it is publicised what Mrs Ivanka Trump did for Ballymun girls training to be beauty therapists and maybe these girls could be contacted to share their memories & thoughts. In time, perhaps a fitting memorial to Mrs Trump could be located in Ballymun. Thank you very much indeed for sharing this information with us. Best wishes.

People who think Trump is a good man are indifferent to all of the obvious ways in which he is not a good man. People who support Trump are okay with who and what he is. That reveals a lot about who they are. If you are okay with Trump’s racism, then you are probably a racist yourself. If you are okay with Trump’s lies, cons, and cheating, then you are okay with those character traits in general, which makes you untrustworthy. If you are okay with his bullying, then you are indifferent to the effect it has on his victims and on society.
If Trump’s actions to enrich himself and his wealthy cohort at the expense of everyone else don’t bother you, then you have a nasty greedy streak of your own. If you agree with Trump’s attacks on the First Amendment, then you probably don’t fully support the ideals of democracy. If Trump’s efforts to increase his power makes him look like a “strong leader” to you and you are happy to follow him, then you favor authoritarianism. If Trump’s agenda to damage the environment for profit sounds okay with you, then you clearly don’t care about the environment yourself. If you don’t mind that Trump seems to have no moral center, then you probably don’t have one either. A person with a genuine moral center would find the man intolerably repulsive and dangerous. Pat, don’t you epitomize the saying “all things to all people”. People chose long ago to abandon most of the he moral teachings of the church for a myriad of reasons. We are living in very changed times. We will not ever revert to those days of hell, fire and brimstone preaching. I don’t agree with your broad sweep judgment of all of us. One thing that puzzles me is your contradictions. You have literally rejected all Catholic moral teachings and supposedly present a modern, inclusive morality to your listeners. I admire you for that but yet there is little evidence that, apart from the individuals you help and interact with, of an overflowing or long queues at the Oratory. Pat, you offer your style of Christianity. I offer my best too. The reality sadly is that the church leadership has sculpted eternally – I believe – an almost irreparable fracture in its moral and spiritual integrity. Also, our world, our intelligence, our scientific understanding of life and humanity are evolving very radically that religious concepts are more challenged than ever before. Even diminished. Many, many people have just grown out of any sense of religious beliefs or religious identity. They are unburdened of any sense of shame, guilt, eternal damnation and sin that gave you and me some moral and religious compass to live by, even though embracing these parameters damaged us in many ways, morally and spiritually. In some respects I understand why many people no longer “walk with us” but I can say with certainty that were I to preach in the style you suggest, I might lose the congregation quickly! We cannot win: we preach the truth and beliefs with conviction and we are demonized: we fail to preach and we’re demonized!! Sometimes its easier just not to try too hard, to give up and just be the best you desire to be, spiritually, religiously and morally, in what we believe is God’s expectation of us and simply focus on Jesus Christ. In the absence of any meaningful renewal, vision or hope, as priests we must remain grafted to Christ alone. The times are changing indeed! We have no prophets, no leaders, no healers, no poets in our midst, civilly and religiously to touch our hearts, soul and spirit!

@11:54. I like your comment, and in particular the truth of your second paragraph. It shows up the true nature of the whole religious farrago.
No doubt the cathbots will either have the usual convoluted explanations, or relapse into the “faith & mystery” get-out.
Indeed the nature of religious beliefs is a mystery when one considers how insignificant humanity’s James Webb Space Telescope has recently transformed our views of the universe. It has revealed thousands of galaxies, each with possibly an average of 100 million stars each with their own family of planets and moons orbiting them. The question of other forms of life elsewhere in the universe is indeed a moot one.
As Louisa Preston lecturer in planetary science & astrobiology at University College London writes in the Guardian, “we may find that we have never actually been alone”.
It puts the whole “Christian story” into a different perspective.

open to everyone. That’s a powerful message that we can all take to heart.”
Like Saints Peter and Paul, the Church must go out to evangelize and not be bound
by the chains of routine and spiritual mediocrity that stifles the Gospel message,
“Clericalism is a perversion; the priest who behaves
in a clerical manner has taken a wrong path. Clerical laity are even worse. We must
be attentive to this perversion of clericalism,”
Pope Francis encour- aged them to be “vigilant sentinels” over their flock.
“As good shepherds, you must be in front of the peo- ple, in the midst of the people and behind the people,” the Pope said, “but always with the holy faithful people of God.

Personally I have no issue with homosexuals. I have been propositioned by a guy and politely declined. It did me no harm but I am not homosexual so it was a non-issue really. Here is my question in reply though.
Point 1: suppose I were to tow the line and get up next Sunday, give an old school redemptorist, fist thumping, brow beating sermon on “homesexual behaviour is wrong because the church says so”.
Point 2: a (rightly) disgruntled parishioner walks out, goes to the hmgarda station and reports a crime under The Incitement to Hatred Act.
Point 3: I am (rightly) arrested, charged and placed before the courts due to my behaviour.
… question…. do I even have a legitimate defense? Or is this teaching actually a breach of Irish civil law? It certainly isn’t very compatible

Getting into a tub-thumping, declamatory rage about homosexual acts might be considered incitement to hatred (though I doubt it), but quietly preaching that such acts are, in accordance with Church teaching, morally wrong is an exercise of free speech, not an incitement to hatred.
If Church teaching here is right, then you would be failing the very people you would claim to care for by not making this teaching plain to them.
If Church teaching here is reliable, souls are at stake, including yours if you hold back on this teaching.
What does Jesus say of those who are ashamed of him? That he will disown them to the Father. If you disown his teaching, you disown him.
Now is the time for moral courage, not cowardice. Telling people what they want to hear (going with the flow) may be convenient and popular, and get you earthly plaudits, but it is travelling by that wide road Jesus mentioned.

Holy Goat, if you are a minister of a church and cannot publicly preach its teachings, I really think you know what you need to do. What you are describing is the nub of the blog post today.

It is the testimony of many people that after a miscarriage, the unborn child has passed to the next life. Knowing this, why would anyone kill an unborn child conceived from what is supposed to have been a “consentual choice” or “love”?

seamusviii I hold your comments with much regard. May I ask you a question please. I would ask you not to answer me on The Blog, too sensitive a matter for traction here. My question is this: have you ever heard the confession of a woman who has procured an abortion ? Some women of Catholic education carry enormous burden for what they decided to do, WITH NO OPTION thanks to what is still around about such a happening. I am not advocating anything here but it is an almost impossible situation sometimes. As I blogged before; there are individuals walking and breathing on our planet right now. They have never worked out there unease or what is troubling them. It is this in my view( and science of the brain, neuroscience will outlay it sometime soon) ; for the nine months in utero, the chemicals at work hardwired in their near transmitters that they were not wanted. That never goes away I would be very sure and a terrible punishment for coming to birth, I am theorising with some knowledge. Abortion is so divisive because it is intimately linked to sex, its power and pleasure, its destructiveness and pain. Resentment is at work towards women as a result of my previous sentence. Seamusviii Have you ever heard the pain of a woman confessing abortion ” I know I did wrong but I cannot feel sorry.” No man could possibly understand. Thomas Aquinas gets my vote for the many (10 I think) categorisations he attached to what we name as “Abortion.) WM

WM 12:10, modern day society appears to be hyper-sexualised. They love things and use people. Secularists abhor the war in Ukraine on social media for popularity. They abhor the war and yet they support the modern day holocaust that is abortion.

Another doomsday scenario….Lovely. Soon we’ll all be disappeared. I envision Oratory style initiatives all over the country. Alternatives are welcome. But I wonder how such would be achieved. I see gatherings of small communities…Waiting, hoping, celebrating, praying, having Eucharist, sharing everything, giving freely, embracing all kinds….ALL…..Then i woke from “the dream..” Now with coffee in hand, i’m readying myself for two funerals….and sick calls later….The dream was wonderful. Crashed back to earth to discover the Oratory I thought was in my back garden is but a broken shed with weeds growing alongside and within.. !!! God be with us today.

1.04 Was it ever any different. Is not the difference simply the rapidity of communication and advancing technology. Abortion is as ancient as humankind as is Love and Lust. Sex is the reason you and I are here. You are correct, society is hyper-sexualised now. That was the preserve of the wealthy in the past ( bishops and popes to be sure). We in the West ( not all of us) live with more luxury than all the Emperors of China had, our daily lives are full of luxury from a corkscrew to electricity, from my underwear to my sports gear, from my bedside light to my radio ( sony city boy 1982), the washing machine and the Mac, to say nothing of my iPhone and my flight patterns. If that is the price for what you call secularism ( Eugene Sweeney s favourite word), I welcome it. Just a pity we don’t share it YET with everybody on the planet. Thank you for the reply but the problem with your well put argument is your Platonic Dualism ( Christian Teaching is full of it.) More Aristotelian myself. Kind regards, Bill Mulvihill

Pope Francis tells religious congregations to have ‘zero tolerance’ on abuse
By Hannah Brockhaus Vatican City, Jul 14, 2022.
” In a meeting with three male religious congregations on Thursday, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of taking a “zero tolerance” approach to abuse.
“One of the problems, we know, that often exists, is the problem of abuse. Please, remember this well: zero tolerance on abuse of minors or disabled people, zero tolerance,” he said in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace July 14.
“Please do not hide this reality,” Francis urged. “We are religious, we are priests to bring people to Jesus, not to ‘consume’ people with our concupiscence.”
He said: “And the abuser destroys, ‘consumes’ so to speak, the abused with his concupiscence. Zero tolerance. Do not be ashamed to denounce, ‘This one did this, that one did that…’”
