WILLIE PURCELL’S GOLFING FOR VOCATIONS

PURCELL

WILLIE PURCELL, the national vocations co-ordinator is organising a PLAY FOR VOCATIONS golf gig this coming Wednesday.

Tickets are € 60 each.

I am wondering how well off guys getting together to play golf can encourage vocations?

Maybe part of the € 60 a head is going towards the vocations fund?

It’s taking place in Kilkenny so I imagine the apostolic administrator of Ossory – Big Denis Nulty might be teeing off?

NULTY

Nulty still hasn’t taken any action against the gay orgies in his diocese being attended by a number of priests.

Mind you, Big Denis, was admired by many a hink when was PP of Drogheda.

THE BOY DIRECTOR OF VOCATIONS

SHANE O’NEILL

SHANE O’NEILL the curate of Tramore and Phonsie’s former master of ceremonies is being sent to Maynooth as a director of formation!

This a sad appointment.

Poor Shane is painfully shy.

If you justook at Shane he blushes and looks as if he wants the group to swallow him up.

The cynical clerics and seminarians in Maynooth will run rings around poor Shane.

He was ordained in 2015 but was in Maynooth with all the famous actors of the 2016 Summer of Love.

In my opinion his extreme shyness could very well be a strong sign that Shane has not come to terms with who he is.

Shane goes to Maynooth like the legendary lamb among wolves.

I have never heard anything negative about Shane.

If Shane is one of the good ones, and he may very well be Maynooth will be his undoing 😞

Yes, with this hot weather, he could have a Rudolph Giuliani moment with the dye pouring down the side of his face.

Pat, I knew many guys who were shy and reticent as students and who were very good students in many ways. As priests they are very kind and caring, no doubt struggling to make sense of “where we’re at” as all of us are doing! I never noticed anything untoward because of their shy demeanour and thank God they continue to minister with dedication. It’s wrong to interpret a shyness as hiding truths about someone. To suggest that his shyness is a sign that he hasn’t come to terms with who he is is an absurd observation and a little menacing. It’s simply wrong. Now I suspect you’re hoping for scandals. Nothing wrong either in having a golf tournament for vocations. However, it wouldn’t be my idea..but I have no criticism of the event. I wish the organisers every success and also wish Fr. Shane God’s blessings.

Like

I agree. Not related to what Pat’s saying but there’s also a tendency to assume diocesan priests have to be incredible extroverts and performers, who preferably play the guitar and football, and it’s losing sight of the simple fact that not everyone is the same.

Like

The outgoing, guitar playing, footballer sems were always highly prized by the Maynooth deans, but unfortunately those lads tended to leave when female lay students got their hooks into them.

Shane hasn’t been a priest long enough to be in a position to form candidates for the priesthood. He has only been a curate, and has done that for only 7 years. And he obviously kept his mouth shut about the strange goings on in Maynooth when he was there. If Pat hadn’t exposed them, they would have continued and got worse.

Like

Yes, I was thinking that if he went through the summer of love he’s either wilfully blind or has kept silent.
Who knows, this could even be the reward!

Like

Being wilfully blind or keeping silent are not promising characteristics for a director of formation.

You know what, I have to agree with your comment. This blog needs a good shake-up.

Bishop Pat I do not condone any form of abuse carried out by Religious,it is very wrong and I commend you for highlighting same on your blog.
However, on a daily basis many lies ,defamattion of character, harassment, bullying, name calling, false allegations etc. are being made against all religious and, from what I can see, whenever proof or evidence, where relevant, is asked for, nothing has been shown.
The Clergy in Ireland, Northern Ireland and the whole world are being torn to shreds on your blog and you allow it. Some commenters rub salt into the wounds by displaying their vulgar, sick nasty repulsive language and gloat in making a skit of clergy at every opportunity possible.
Pat many of the stalwarts of your blog have left – you should ask yourself why?
There are daily commenters who grace the blog with l(a) long-winded headings, which, might I add, has only been happening in recent times and (b) under numerous pseudonyms. These commenters think they are not being recognised!! how wrong you are. There are some who even reply to their own comment(s) which is laughable. Also,we get several one-liners which are thrown in here and there regularly and are of no relevance but more often than not, its to target our clergy once again
Can we please pray for Clergy worlldwide, now that things are beginning to get back to normal and the money from the weekly basket collections is, thank God, ncreasing.
Stay safe everyone. H.A.N.D.

You are something else; you truly are. And at the risk of those remarks going over your head, they are far from complmentary.
You’re a priest? Of course you are. It’s so easy to tell these days, especially in print.
The priest begin his post perfunctorily, with the now obligatory and ritual condemnation of child rape by Catholic priests and religious, just to reassure readers that he knows where his heart and conscience are, and that he actually ‘gets’ it. And then he moves swiftly on (and with an eagerness that surpasses a virgin’s on the first night of honeymoon) to his real purpose, his major bugbear: a very, very longwinded, self-interested, self-pitying whine about how shockingly romanist clerics are treated on this blog.
Who gives a ….?!

Yes, a terrible appointment for Shane O’ Neill after just 7 years of priesthood. There’s lots of guys in their fifties, ordained 25+ years who could have become Dean of Maynooth, men not associated with the recent Maynooth years. Shane will have a difficult time there.

Like

The wisdom of appointing a young priest in his early 30s (if that) to the role of Director of Formation defies levelheadedness. You need a person of experience of priestly life, a track record of varied pastoral/educational engagement/know how and the savvy that comes with this combination. Putting a man into this position is unfair on him and, more importantly, unfair on the seminarians who need depthful and experienced insight/wisdom/acumen. It’s a sad state of affairs.

There’s even been talk of drawing up a list of ‘enhanced’ charges for these shameless freeloaders … to help ‘Father’ make ends comfortably meet, you understand.

No doubt, I sound jealous; honestly, I’m not. He strikes me as a decent sort but I cannot pretend that he lives a life that my wife and I and our two teenage boys simply can’t afford and this means I think more than I should do about what and when I contribute.

I agree that priests must be funded by their congregations, but only those in full-time ministry. In my experience, the majority of priests do not fall into this category and should at least be in part-time salaried employment.

The cardinal rule must never be forgotten: there must be no charge for God’s grace, since this is freely given to all.

Charging for grace (e. g. the Mass) is even worse than simony, and a very grave sin, in my opinion. Yet, this was historically routine in the Roman Catholic Church, and it remains an abuse to this day. It was a legitimate grievance on the eve of the Protestant Reformation, and, despite the revolutionary religious and social consequences of that upheaval, it remains unresolved. Any priest who accepts a so-called ‘donation’ for a Mass is making a charge for grace, regardless of how euphemistically and self-deceivingly he cares to explain it.

The German and Austrian Catholic churches continue to charge for grace absolutely wholesale, a morally indefensible and repugnant position in the 21st century, and a strong reason for dwindling congregations in those countries.

Pat, any idea what became of Joh Connolly – formerly of Armagh Diocese; he seems to have dropped off the radar? A onetime favourite of the last cardinal……….Is he one of the disappeared?

Like

2.39 Yes he is, but of his own integrity and volition. Eamon Martin bullied him on the back of outrageous opposition to his prudent decision making in his parish. I am close to moving the feminised form of that name, so well versed am I in his dirty tricks.

Like

I agree Bill. Martin cannot be described as a person.if “blameless life”. Bullies are brutes.

Like

2.58 We shall always disagree on that Pat. In terms of inappropriate sexual behaviour , Eamon Martin is of “blameless life.” Unlike you Pat, I do not have a bishops chair but if I did what I say would be “ex Cathedra.” There was a decency to Eamon Martin, good parents and good family but he sold his soul to The Great Slut.

Like

We have no knowledge of Eamon Martin’s sex life.

There is good reason to think it might all be in his head.

But hey! Even Homer nods.

Like

Well said Bill. John Connolly is indeed a man of high integrity and intelligence. I have no doubt that he will do well at whatever he does in the future. Not one person who entered Maynooth in 1987 for Armagh is to be found in ministry. All married and moved on with their lives, which I am sure John will do too.

Like

The last time they appointed a ypung priest, not long ordained, as a Maynooth dean, it was a disaster. Fr Cathal Ó Fearraí (now the PP of Ballyshannon) was ordained in 1974 and appointed Junior Dean in 1977. He hadn’t even served in a parish but had been doing further studies. Fr McGinnity was Senior Dean and discipline collapsed under both of them, leading to a crackdown in the 1980s when Ledwith was president and new deans were brought in.

One of the big problems with bringing in this shy curate, with the oil still wet on his hands, is that nowadays there is only one dean at a time in Maynooth. There used to be three in post at any one time and their personalities and priorities evened each other out. This new dean will be stand alone, so will be withoout the support, advice and wisdom of fellow deans.

All in all, it is a stupid appointment. It would be as crazy as appointing a young priest as the spiritual director.

Like

Appointing ANY priest to a position of authority seems to me utterly crazy and irresponsible.

There should be lay appointees in these positions, older, wiser, better psychologically adjusted than the vast majority of priests.

The appointment of this young curate has less to do with him and his ability to “form” and more to do with Phoncie’s desire to have a deeper role – and contact – in the running of the National Seminary.

Few enough other bishops who have younger clergy would ever consider letting them leave the diocese to take on such a role, believing their diocesan needs come first. Phoncie has no such qualms. He appears to have calculated that with this appointment, he now has a direct line into seminary formation for the rest of the Irish Church. It is about his needs, no-one else’s.

Like

I suspected that too, 3.43pm. Sensible bishops would refuse to release a young priest for that work. The new dean is Phonsie’s proxy and Phonsie will pull the levers to get the dean to approve for ordination the type of priests that Phonsie wants for the Irish Church.

Like

A pity Phonsie wouldn’t send John Nally, once the youngest PP in the country, to do that job.

Who are all the begrudging nut jobs on this blog who question why priests work in non parochial roles? There’s no shortage of priests in Irish dioceses. Look around where are the faithful for them to minister to? They’re all gone or dead. To minister to people you need to believe they have souls and this is highly doubtful in most cases. Remember the wonderful line of Patrick Kavanagh about rural Monaghan: “pity the young priest, somewhat educated who has to believe these people have souls”. In over 25 years as a priest in Waterford this is my experience. Better to treat the priesthood as it is, a gift to be enjoyed. So I say, more power to Liam Bergin in Boston and Edmond Cullinan in Rome and all the others who have avoided the drudgery of parish life. This narrow minded begrudging insistence on priests being in parishes has driven all the talent out of the church. We’re left with semi literate gobdaw sycophants or sluts who use holy mother church to access their conquests.

So you prefer priests who are so exhausted from running from a to b all the time that they have nothing to offer, nothing of depth to say, old clashing gongs of vacuity. You haven’t heard the parable of Martha and Mary have you? All this activism and quantification of everything is the ruination of God’s gift to us his priests and his holy bride the Church.
Our wonderful bishop here in Waterford & Lismore understands these things. Bishop Alphonsus II is such a fan of Fr Mulvihill too.

Bishop Alphonsus II is so fortunate to have you to intercede to on his behalf whoever it is on high who listens to you. I didn’t know Alphonsus II is the second holder of that name to sit on St Carthage’s cathedra. There is quite a difference between the papacy, a mere curate or parish priest. You mention the parable of Martha and Mary, activism, and quantification. Martha and Mary were present to the Lord. They were not trying to jet set, climb the corporate ladder, or carve a career for themselves at the expense of the sheeple. It is interesting to learn your wonderful Bishop in Waterford & Lismore, Bishop Alphonsus II is such a fan of Fr Mulvihill.

He’s another Director of Formation who has left the priesthood – in his case in December 2021. Elphin got 13 years out of him post-ordination, albeit only a couple of those were actually in Elphin – the rest were further studies, followed by a short spell as a curate, then a college chaplain, then DoF in the Irish College and, lastly, vice rector in the Irish College. He is now a student at Georgetown, the SJ university in Washington DC.

I can’t help but feel that the bishops should only accept men of 50 or over as seminarians. After ordination they could do maybe 20 years in a parish. The young ones only do 5 years on average before coming out of the closet and leaving (with a very rare hetero exception). Sometimes they leave within a year of two of ordination. You’d get a better return on investment from the older men.

Like

Ironically older seminarians would be more likely to have the resources to leave more easily if they want – a house and profession to go back to, say.
Aren’t people funny.

Like

10.41, that’s true, but they tend not to leave, either because their options are fewer or because they have already “found themselves” before entering, know who they are and don’t use formation and the priesthood as a long, expensive journey of self-discovery.
I really do think that accepting young men into seminary nowadays is an expensive farce, given that they all leave not long after ordination.
