DIOCESE OF WATERFORD AND LISMORE DYING FROM “PNONSIEITIS”

PHONSIE THE TORMENTOR

“Dear Bishop Pat,

I am a longstanding priest of the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore.

I pen this after much thought and prayer and after discussions with colleagues.

Our diocese is being destroyed by a tyrant and a bully – Phonsie Cullinan.

Since he arrived our good name has been dragged through the mud by his irrational and right wing pronouncements on matters such as the cervical cancer preventative vaccine for girls and his antideluvian pronouncements on matters like yoga.

FR RICHARD GEOGHEGAN:

FATHER RICHARD

In the recent past he has bullied Father Richard into signing an application to Rome for laicisation. Richard always wanted to be a priest and was always a good priest. If you want to, visit Carrick on Suir and ask about him.

He has always been totally pastoral and famous for his punctuality. Children and adults loved his short but straight to the point homilies. He kept parish books and registers to perfection.

Richard also endeared himself to all with his humanity, his sense of humour, his non clerical friendliness and his involvement in parish events, pantomimes and dramas.

Yes, he was and is “different” – but in the very best of ways. Some say he is eccentric? But how refreshing a relief that is from the black suit and never smiling brigade.

He is a very sensitive man and Phonsie spotted that from the beginning and used it against Richard. Richard likes to be called Richard. But Phonsie taunted him by calling him “Richie”.

Phonsie made a point of sending for Richard after dark and we know that after some of those meetings Richard emerged to both cry and vomit.

Richard is a people person. Phonsie appointed him to a very isolated parish which had been left in a horrible state by his predecessor. Richard was driven, to attempt suicide an attempt that thankfully did not end in his death.

Phonsie often reminded him of that dark hour in a most unkind and non pastoral fashion.

Even at Confirmations now many children don’t want their children photographed with Phonsie.

Since he arrived Phonsie has always had a number of young men and women living with him in his house. Creepy! What is this about?

SUPPORT OF RICHARD PURCELL

None of us can understand the strange relationship between Phonsie and the now deposed Richard Purcell.

Phonsie supported him to the bitter end.

What was all this really about?

We know how much you love Waterford and Lismore. You finished your training in our seminary. You were ordained in our cathedral 46 years ago.

You were a lifelong friend of our Monsignor John Shine. And he thought as much of you as you did of him.

JOHN SHINE RIP

We were absolutely appalled at how Phonsie treated you at Monsignor Shine’s funeral by creating a totally unChristian scene and refusing you Holy Communion.

He even called for some of the priests present on the sanctuary to physically remove you from the church. My God!

Bishop Russell who ordained you was a gentleman. Bishop Lee was a good pastor to his priests.

Phonsie often says that you, Pat are “pure evil”.

But the priests and people of Waterford know who the truly evil one is – and its not you, dear Pat.

Even the retired Bishop Lee dreads Phonsie’s lunch invitations and offer those occasions up for the souls in Purgatory.

Please continue your close scrutiny of Cullinan so that we might soon be free of him.

With the kindest regards,

Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxxx

Waterford and Lismore”.

PAT

Dear Brother,

Thank you for your most welcome and self explanatory email.

I’ve known from the beginning that Phonsie was a disastrous appointment.

Now that clergy, parents and even the bishop emeritus are expressing frustration and angst things are really gathering pace.

He must be removed ASAP.

How that can be achieved is not clear.

Hopefully the Holy Spirit will intervene.

This is an absolutely shocking letter.
It sounds like Richard was an excellent priest and was bullied out.
Shameful.

12.34 Bishop Phonsie should pray for the green eyed monster to depart his black soul. How childish & inappropriate of him to interfere in Fr Geoghegans personal choice of car when others are far far more indulgent with themselves not only in the car department but also in more grevious underground considerations.

Like

No. Anyone who knows Fr. Richard will know that he’s not materialistic. Hasn’t changed his car since Phonsie arrived in Waterford.

Yes Fr Richard is well regarded all round , particularly in Carrick,he was very poorly represented by the ACP, Phonsie must have got great pleasure in running rings around the left wing clown from the ACP

Bishop Phonsie is a big bully with secrets, the support that Phonsie, Bishop Luggs Monahan and Abbot Coffey in Glenstal showered on Rawhide Purcell speaks volumes. Who exactly are the young men and women living in Phonsies house? Indeed, what’s that all about?

Like

It’s the young men readers will be primarily interested in, their welfare, and what they’re doing there. The bishop is a confirmed bachelor.

Fr Richard Geoghegan is a fine looking man, God Bless Him. Phonsie is jealous of his good looks and personality and of his popularity & is trying to crush his spirit, that’s what bullies do. Phonsie is a miserable and cruel control freak, he thinks he knows it all and it’s his way or the highway.

I don’t know Bishop Cullinane at all apart from what’s expressed here and that’s not very kind or admirable and from his various public announcements about moral issues. Some of these have been embarrassing. However, I hold no respect for him after the manner of Fr. Richard’s treatment. The Bishop acted horribly unkind, un Christ like and in a vindictive manner. He seemed to have singled Richard out after his RTE appearance. His treatment of Richard warrants a thorough canonical investigation and a civil one too, if possible. Some Bishops are backwoods men – solitary, aloof, out of reach and out of touch. It’s a very revealing letter from a Waterford and Lismore priest. I hope Richard is ok now. How can we support him? Bishop Cullinane: act kindly, justly and humbly in the name of your God.

Like

12.33. What you see is what you get in some ways with Bishop Cullinane in Waterford. His various gaffes are frequently highlighted in the National press, it’s interesting to note that he does not take his lead from his fellow Bishops who instead opt make loaded bullets leaving their pals to fire them.

Like

Pat, did you hear about Phonsie singling out a teenage boy during confirmations Iin Ballybricken just after he arrived in Waterford. The silly kid was looking at his phone and Phonsie stopped the Mass and said “hey, you down there with the phone! Put it away or get out of here”. You can imagine the shame of the boy. He stayed but I’d say it was the last time he darkened the door of a church. That’s our glorious bishop, Alphonsus, for you.

Like

12.38 Bishop should have had the ability to be more diplomatic in his he addressed the child, perhaps respectfully address his parents to ask the child to put his phone away. He is like a bull in a China shop for sure but he probably wouldn’t have the balls to even consider addressing the child’s parents. Bullies prefer a smaller target.

Phonsie has been collecting priests from India to work in Waterford & Lismore. This was working out ok until he decided to make them parish priests. He moved one of his favourites, Ricky O’Halloran, to the plum parish of Tramore and replaced him with an Indian as PP in Portlaw & Ballyduff. The Indian PP is a disaster. His first act was to dismantle all the parish committees and get rid of all women involved in the parish, incl. the sacristan. He has told the people that order must be restored and women have no role in managing any parish affairs. Good luck with that! The kiss of death to that parish.

With all due respect to bishop Lee, Phonsie inherited a diocese where many of the priests didn’t give a damn about obedience to their ordinary. There are priests and ex priests of Waterford who boast about telling Willie Lee to “fuck off” when he attempted to get them to move parishes or diocesan roles. My confrère saying that Willie Lee was ” pastoral” to his priests makes me laugh. I think being pastoral in this context means taking it on the chin when told to eff off.

Pat, in relation to, ‘psychic rape’, as I mentioned, it’s a term I coined to describe what was done to me by a psychiatrist I had the misfortune to encounter.
I am not going to mention the who, what, where, when, and why, at the moment. Briefly, I experienced dissociative symptoms on a Sunday. Such systems are associated with trauma. I saw a psychiatrist mid-week and was admitted to hospital the following Friday. The psychiatrist subsequently wanted to administer a course of ECT. This was blocked. So, instead, he put me on a medication for ‘an illness’ which had a significant depressive component. I had no depressive symptoms whatsoever. I was subsequently hospitalized again a year and a half later. The psychiatrist then changed the medication. I was never diagnosed with clinical depression, schizophrenia, or bi-polar disorder. Two highly respected educators/therapists, independently, told me, all I needed was a listening ear and to cry- a year or two years maximum of psychotherapy. Instead, I was given ‘a career’ by a psychopath masquerading as a doctor. This psychiatrist precipitated a psychotic breakdown, Pat. In layperson’s language, he drove me mad. There is substantial detail surrounding this entire matter. I’m only scratching the surface in this brief account. The Church knows a considerable amount, including the various medications used by the psychiatrist. So, ‘psychic rape’ means; to drive a person mad, knowingly, deliberately, and maliciously. The outcome – profound suffering. I’m another of the shunned sheep, rejected Catholics, persona non grata. So be it.

Pat,
You are aware of much of my story. The level of interference into
my life as a consequence of what happened to me, why it happened
and how it happened, is absolutely appalling. In fact, a leading
Irish psychotherapist, an author, and International conference speaker,
told me he had never come across a case as bad as mine, involving so
much interference in a person’s life. Bishop Cullinan is aware of my case.
I have strong reasons to believe a priest of the Diocese is also aware of my case.
A person’s life can be ruined for no reason whatsoever other
than a person is perceived as a potential threat. My story
involves; psychic rape by a psychopath, my good name ruined,
my career ruined, calumny, physical assault, wifi hacked,
phone hacked, threats, etc. In 2015, following an incident,
nobody in my local Christian community- the community of love-
spoke to me, or asked me what had happened, as if what
had happened was a regular occurrence.
(One lady- a daily Mass-goer- did ask, two years later, etc)
Pat, I have a Diploma, a Hons 2.1 Degree, two MA Degrees, yet
I am considered unemployable. I have a wooden chest full of
evidence going back years, including a letter for a lecturing
position in 1994, a letter from a medic in 1995, a letter from
a Garda Superintendent in 1996, etc. That’s only for starters, Pat.
In more recent years, I have correspondence from Archbishop Okolo,
Bishop Cullinan, and a priest of the Diocese, etc. I have purposely and
deliberately widened the circle of who knows my story over the last
number of years for very strong reasons, including safety reasons.
I do not have friends or associates in the priesthood.
I told Bishop Cullinans colleagues in Rome, in a letter,
in conscience, I cannot, nor will I keep my mouth shut
after what happened to me. I didn’t tell them how I was
going to make my story public. I want to make this perfectly clear;
I did not ask or seek financial compensation from the Diocese.
Believe it or not, the Lord is the lotto, the Truth sets us free.

@ 11:01. Thank you. My condolences on the death of your cousin. Thank you for the link.
With respect, you don’t know what you, obviously, don’t know of my case.
It was not emotional abuse. I coined the term ‘psychic rape’ when discussing with my therapist what happened to me. My therapist agreed and thought it a very appropriate apt description. I wish you well. I will remember your extended family in prayer.

Like

@12:25 Thank you and I look forward to learning more from you about “psychic rape”. Best wishes.

Like

7:30 I can identify with your pain and suffering. I am very sorry for the abuse you suffered at the hands of the RCC clergy. Emotional rape is perhaps a more accurate term for what you have experienced?
I saw a notice posted in St. Finnachta church when I went in to light a candle for my cousin who died yesterday under tragic circumstances. It said at the end: “perhaps like most of us here you are looking for acceptance, support, understanding, compassion and community. Tá Fáilte Romhat.” There is virtually no acceptance, support, understanding, compassion and community available for those of us who are whistleblowers in the RCC. In my opinion, posting a notice like that is pure virtue signalling on the part of the church. I wish you well going forward. The Truth does set us free.

Sometimes synonymous to the word “telepathic rape.” This happens when a man/woman masturbates while imagining someone who’s not aware. So, in your opinion Pat, some people have no right to a defence? Isn’t this a contradiction of your oft-stated assurance that those criticised on your blog will be allowed an unedited reply? You seemed to stand very high on that assurance. You seemed a man of your word.

These two statements (rehetorical questions) do not sit well together; they make you look a rank hypocrite.

Yes, I’m the commenter you ignored about an hour ago. That’s fine, if this is your way of dealing with legitimate challenges. But it’s hardly mature. Or just.

EVERYONE is entitled to a defence; it’s a basic principle of law. But you don’t like that, when it doesn’t suit your agenda. However, you would appreciate the principle a little more if it happened to affect you. Remember this is how Jesus was shortcutted to the Cross, by ignoring due process.

No, Bishop Cullinan is not Jesus, but you are acting more like Pilate than Jesus.

My earlier comment abused no one, nor did it put anyone down. And yet, you didn’t publish it. Moral cowardice.

As for the so-called indefensible, even those accused of murder are allowed a defence, but you disallow such a defence for those alleged to have done much less?

You can refuse to publish this comment, too, but the fact that you are acting not from justice but much more from a deep disllike of Bishop Cullinan is obvious, and will remain.

Bishop Phonsie Cullinan is quite welcome to post on this blog and defend himself, it is noted that he certainly has no issues verbalising so sure that a powerful member of RCC like himself doesn’t require an anonymous whinging mouthpiece stating his case for him. Bishop Phonsie of course also has the option to defend himself though the Irish court system should he be advised there is a case to answer. I look forward to attending with documentary evidence to support the opposition. Yours most sincerely, Crocodile definitely not Dundee

10.19 what has Bishop Phonsie done about the children in his Waterford and Lismore Diocese that badly need school meals in these difficult times. If he had funds to spare after cleaning up his own backyard, he could have sent the money he and his group spent on flights and everything else out to the poor children in Kenya. More Two faced hypocritical carry on from Bishop Phonsie. Hopefully he didn’t tick off the Kenyan people that might not have had access to water to wash in before meeting him bearing in mind what he said to the Presentation nun, her presentation obviously not up to his high standards, chances are the poor nun WAS NOT sitting on €70k like the priest Bishop Phonsie allegedly facilitated & kept him in office unlike Poor Fr Geoghegan left out in the freezing cold against the wishes of his colleagues and parishioners who continue to hold him in the highest cod esteem.

Similarly annoying is the Habitat for Humanity nonsense whereby untrained young Westerners raise funds to pay for them to go on housebuilding jaunts in Africa. Much better not to spend the money on flights and to give the money instead to local builders in Africa.

I have to object to the way +Phonsie has been protrayed in today rant.
If the ‘source’ really is from the ranks of the clergy of W&L is reflects more negatively on them than it does on their ordinary. It is quite clear that the clergy of W&L resent having a bishop who behaves as a bishop.
The opinion of a invalidely ordained protestant lady priestess is not worth considering: a priest who donned drag on national television is clearly not a suitable person for public ministry. It goes to show that the decline of the catholic church in Ireland was hastened by admitting the lower classes to holy orders: they dont know how to behave appropriately, and in some cases not even with children.
I have known Phonsie for many years: he is an intelligent, thoughtful and kind man, who acts for the good of the church, all the baptised faithful.

This was in the interregnum between the departure of Sean Lavery and the appointment of John O’Keeffe. I was refused diaconate because one could not resign a college appointment in those days and one could not be seen to get away with it. Ledwith, who had treated me very well to that point, was furious. Tom Clancy shafted me by telling me there would not be consequences to resigning and then blamed the refusal of diaconate on Matt O’ Donnell.

That’s awful, Frank. Imagine doing that over something so trivial as a college appointment (though college organist was one of the biggies). It shows what a petty hothouse it was in those days. Clancy up to his usual tricks and Ledwith was not accustomed to being defied.
As for Matt O’Donnell, despite his austere image, Matto was often the only defender of students hauled up before the Administrative Council. Sems had to appear before it in collar and soutane in the board room in Stoyte House and it was a terrifying experience, according to a Tuam student who told me all about it. Clancy was more or less reaching across the table having a spittle-flecked nutty, and Matto came to the rescue.

12.04 Was he in the right place at the right time when Cathal used him as the Bulldog in Court against Pat Buckley. Deenihan has a doctorate, Coyle has a doctorate, Ahern as you say has a doctorate. Its harder to get a BA Hons …..you don’t seem aware. Doctorates in some academic institutions are more plentiful than toilet paper…not from Lidl.

Like

Niall told me that the only reason that he did a general BA, rather than an honours one, was that the Junior Dean at the time compelled him to do the general degree because it had three subjects, rather than the two in the hons, and that would give more scope to Niall when he was posted as a priest teacher in one of the Elphin diocesan colleges. That’s Niall’s story and he’s sticking to it. I’m surprised he never told you during your extended stay in New House. I think Frank Duhig has a general BD or no BD at all.

Re honours/pass BA degrees there was a curious system of a 2 year BA hons exam at the end of Summer 3rd year. It meant giving up a summer and studying 2 years work together .. very primitive..later changed. This deterred ba honours students

Like

In Niall Ahern’s time in Maynooth, every seminarian’s first three years in Maynooth were given over to study for a BA or BSc degree awarded by the National University of Ireland, or, more rarely, an LPh awarded by the Pontifical University (Ledwith had an LPh). There was no sem course then. In first year of the BA four subjects were studied (philosophy had to be one of them if you were a seminarian).
In second Arts, depending on your first Arts results, you continued in either the General or Hons stream. General had three subjects. Hons had two. In Hons you got a First, or a 2.1 or a 2.2, or a Pass or fail.
In the BA General you either passed or failed. Bill is saying that Niall passed his BA General exams and was awarded a pass degree.

So, you restricted me again, Pat: you refused to publish my reply today to 10.36 pm, under the usertag 4.00.
There was nothing abusive in my reply, which was in defence of Bishop Cullinan. This can be the ONLY reason for your refusal to publish it.
Furthermore, your refusal gives the lie to your categorical claim, yesterday, at 10.18 am: ‘I don’t ‘restrict ANYONE’.
If it is really your intention to allow those criticised or excoriated on your blog to make an unedited response in their defence, then you have undermined this intention by refusing to publish such responses. It shouldn’t matter whether these are made directly, or by proxy: a defence is a defence.
I believe that you described us, the Irish hierarchy (among other bishops), as ‘wolves in shepherd’s clothing’. Some of us probably are. But are you really any different? To show yourself in a more favourable moral light in comparison with Roman Catholic bishops, you said that you ‘hate’ censorship, and yet, you typically censor with abandon (and not always because comments are abusive, but simply because you don’t like them). And you offer an assurance that those criticised or excoriated on your blog will be allowed an unedited reply, and yet, they aren’t, are they?
Again Pat, why would any reasonable person trust such an assurance when you behave so inconsistently, and with such lack of moral integrity?
Words without action are just spoiled intentions.

I agree with you. I have had a number of comments providing balance to arguments made on blog posts and they have not been published. Censorship at its best. Vladimir Buckley only likes the narrative to be in his favour.
With regards to Bishop Cullinan – he’s obviously disliked because he is going against the grain, arguing against the status quo of the world today, making the uncomfortable statements that priests and bishops dont have the balls to make. I wish him well.
I sure wish I had him as my diocesan Bishop.

I also feel like I have read the hectoring, patronizing, accusing comment Pat didn’t publish, here many times before.
The one thing the clergy can’t stand is not being the final arbiter and Centre of attention, which gives a striking insight into the childhoods of men drawn to priesthood.

Actually that blogger makes a very valid point.
Bill Mulvihill is given free reign to say what he wants because, as Pat tells us, Bill is his friend and he believes in him 100%.
Yet, posts that challenge such contributors or challenge the view that Fonsie in a one dimensional, pantomime villain are NOT published.
I have had posts deleted in the past and on this topic today – not one of the contributions was offensive but they challenged the Village Idiot’s posts
All of which would undermine Pat’s position that he permits a right of reply and calls into questions his integrity.
(As it happens I believe that Fonsie is a pantomime villain but unfortunately he has the capacity to wreak real havoc in peoples lives. Pure Evil!)

This is a link to an interesting article by Phil Mortell. The punch line: “Is it possible that the Murphy Report is unfair to the Dublin Archdiocesan Auxiliary Bishops in assuming that they possessed a level of understanding not shared by their contemporaries in the professional system?” As a professional in the professional system I had an awareness and understanding of child sexual abuse in the mid-1980s in Ireland.

Like

4.30: Many of your colleagues in the same profession “were’nt” aware as they advised Bishops that with some paedophile incidents or abuses, the possibility of recurrence (recidivism) was miniscule. Wonder why? I was certainly aware since the early 70’s of “abusers”, having been abused by a “nice” neighbour. My parents in the 60’s always warned us against ever being in the company of certain men in our villages but one guy went unnoticed (my abuser). I grew up with a suspicion about men loitering alone and my antennae re: abusers is very sharp and proved correct in a couple of cases where civil justice was done!! The so called professionals failed in many cases. Their files should be examined. You would of course, defend your profession, as the bishops defended the institution…

Like

I’m not surprised you had a heightened awareness of ‘abusers’ having been abused. You were not alone. I hope your abuse experience was not overly detrimental in life. Of course bishops were entitled to defend the institution. I’m questioning the notion of the ongoing gradual learning curve. This gradual learning curve didn’t seem to apply to cover liabilities likely to arise from clerical child sex abuse. It seems most of Ireland’s catholic dioceses had insurance in place as far back as 1987. Apparently between 1987 and 1990 most dioceses obtained separate insurance policies from Church & General against the eventuality of legal liability accruing to a diocese from acts of child sexual abuse by priests. Can we therefore deduce someone knew enough as far back as 1987 or probably earlier to warn serious problems were looming for the institution? What springs to mind is tune pipers and pay. This equally applies to statutory as well as church employees.

It seems he is relishing his fame too much on his blog, now that he’s the co-author with Pat. If we look back over the last 3/4 days, with at least 100 + comments, there’s something very revealing about the direction, nature and expression of his verbiage. I believe It is both morally and ethically repulsive for any erson who shows signs of “breakdown” to be encouraged and facilitated to do so on a public forum. It’s an abuse of freedom and while it may give fun to some, it is a most unattractive feature of this blog all too often. As you rightly say, anon at 5.50, common sense and a little intelligence are often the best at discerning traits in others. There are some necessary truths that need to be expressed about Pat’s blog. It’s a very useful and necessary forum. Recently it’s been abused by Bill Mulvihill, Pat’s friend whom he trusts 100%. Amazing. Bill and Pat sing from the same hymn sheet and it’s an ugly sheet in their readings. It is incredulous that Mulvihill has total, unquestioned and complete freedom to say what he likes but Pat deletes, bins and ignores the legitimate comments of many. Bill is even now advising Pat. He is a vicious, nasty man who, since leaving priesthood, has flung around all kinds of names, sinister stories, allegations and speculations about individuals whom he, like Pat, have chosen as targets to be felled. There are moral and ethical issues and questions to be asked about this symbiotic liaison between Pat and Bill. I fail to understand why Bill is allowed to be so vulgar, irrational, deranged and scurrilous in his comments. His frequent use of the “f**k” and “f*****g” and “b******s” words is utterly distasteful and unacceptable. All of these realities are evident and indicate that a person is not mentally or emotionally in a good place. While it may be good for Bill Mulvihill to use your blog as some form of psychological catharsis, it would be better if this person or anyone in a similar experience, sat face to face with a professional.
