On Friday, the California Court of Appeal for the Fifth District handed down two separate rulings rejecting Harrison’s claims for defamation. The court reversed lower court rulings in Harrison’s favor and ordered that he pay attorneys’ fees and other costs in each case.
Harrison had filed the lawsuits in 2019 against Stephen Brady of Roman Catholic Faithful, a whistleblower group that exposes clerical corruption; and Ryan Gilligan, a former monk and associate of Harrison who accused him of homosexual grooming.
This makes Harrison’s third loss in court, after a judge in May 2021 dismissed his defamation lawsuit against the diocese of Fresno.
Harrison, ordained in 1987, is credibly accused by at least seven victims of homosexual abuse. In 2019, Gilligan was among several accusers who came forward publicly, leading to increased media scrutiny of Harrison’s case, including a 2019 press conference held by Brady’s Roman Catholic Faithful in California.
In separate defamation actions, Harrison sued Gilligan for his allegations and Brady for his comments about Harrison made at the press conference.
In both of Friday’s rulings, the court found that the comments made by Brady and Gilligan were protected speech:
Brady and his organization, Roman Catholic Faithful, Inc., work to uncover evidence of sexual misbehavior by Catholic priests and Brady claimed to be seeking the truth regarding these allegations. For the reasons set forth below, we conclude that the allegedly defamatory statements identified by Harrison are protected by the fair report privilege … .
And from the ruling on Gilligan’s case:
The impetus for the lawsuit is the claim by appellant that Harrison subjected him to inappropriate sexual advances, acted inappropriately with children, and sexually abused at least one minor child. … For the reasons set forth below, we conclude that the allegedly defamatory statements identified by Harrison are protected by the fair report privilege … .
“All I ever did was speak my truth,” Gilligan said in comments to Church Militant, “and all I want now is Craig Harrison and his attorneys to leave my family and me alone.”

talk he gave to a packed house at Bakersfield’s Fox Theater
“I am very grateful,” said Brady in remarks to Church Militant. “This suit delayed all my other work to some degree, to say nothing of legal fees, which we now hope to recover.”
Brady has had to spend more than $100,000 in legal costs defending himself in this litigation.
“The best thing, as far as I’m concerned, is that now I can get back to my work without worrying about this nonsense,” Brady added.
“We are pleased with the two rulings issued by the Fifth District Court of Appeals finding that Craig Harrison’s separate lawsuits against our clients should both be dismissed under California’s Anti-SLAPP statute,” said attorneys Paul Jonna and Jeffrey Trissell, who represented Brady and Gilligan.
“California’s Anti-SLAPP statute was intended to dispose of frivolous and baseless lawsuits just like the ones Mr. Harrison filed against our clients,” they noted. “To disincentivize such baseless lawsuits, the Anti-SLAPP statute provides that a prevailing defendant’s attorneys’ fees must be paid by the losing plaintiff.”
“We will now seek to recover from Mr. Harrison the substantial attorneys’ fees that our clients have incurred during this process,” they added.
Multiple Accusers
The diocese placed Harrison on leave in April 2019 after a man accused the priest of abusing him when he was a 16-year-old altar boy. Other accusers also came forward, including Gilligan.
“I was in Fr. Craig’s inner circle from 2011 to 2016 and am a victim of his inappropriate touching, lies, manipulation and abuse of power,” said Gilligan in a public statement.
“I witnessed him being inappropriate with children, giving gifts/money, saying sexual jokes, touching, and being alone with them,” he continued. “I have also witnessed him taking advantage and controlling the lives of younger men entrusted to him that have had drug or alcohol problems.”
In a statement to the Bakersfield Police Department in May 2021, Gilligan related to police instances of Harrison’s alleged inappropriate activity, including:
- Touching of genitals
- Pornography
- Telling of homosexual jokes
- Blackmailing him to keep silent by threatening to reveal sins he confessed
In response, Harrison smeared Gilligan as a liar and an alcoholic. Gilligan stood by his claims and expressed little surprise that Harrison would try to discredit him by destroying his reputation.
Harrison was initially accused of abuse more than 20 years ago, in 1998, by a male teen who lived in the rectory of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Firebaugh. He claimed Harrison would inspect his genitals each night under the pretext that it would reveal whether the boy was doing drugs.
The allegation is identical to that of another boy who lived in one of Harrison’s homes for troubled teens.
Most of the alleged victims are Latino males from troubled backgrounds.GabTweet
A 2004 report obtained by Church Militant written by former FBI agent Tom Walsh quotes a former resident of one of the boys’ homes, who relayed that “every morning Harrison lined up all the boys who were residing in the house and examined each boy’s testicles with a flashlight. Telling them that by doing this he could tell if any one of them was using narcotics.”
Harrison’s alleged conduct is also identical to two other accusers who have more recently stepped forward, saying Harrison would also inspect their genitals, using the same reasons. Another accuser claims Harrison pinned him against the wall and rubbed his erect penis against him.
Most of the alleged victims are Latino males from troubled backgrounds.
The 2004 FBI investigator’s report goes on to detail evidence of at least one suicide of a boy who lived with Harrison.
PAT SAYS
This case from the US is a strong reminder to us that many gay priests are involved in the deliberate “grooming” of young men in their parishes and communities, including and especially in Ireland.
This problem is a real facet of the priestly gay issues in the Archdiocese of Armagh and other Irish dioceses.
It has also being a feature of life in Silverstream monastery.

Pat I totally agree with your ‘Pat Says…’ today. Secondary schools in Armagh Archdiocese is too familiar to many priests. Young men in these schools are too impressionable. My sister is an RE teacher in Tyrone and was horrified at some of the stories she was hearing. My goodness there is one very true saying Pat: the truth will always out. It has. It is. And it will in Armagh. Our schools and churches need cleansed from at infestation of evil.

4.12am: My Good God: what an hour to express a comment!! Was the wind and rain so awful? …I cannot believe that any priest would be seen at the chipper with a group of children. It is a very foolish thing for him to do in these days. I recall years ago when visiting schools how children spontaneously and innocently would run to greet me in the school yard. I was never comfortable with this so I ensured that my visit to the school never coincided with break times when children would be outside. This was long before any procedures were drawn up re: boundaries. Even with teachers in the school yard, I was uncomfortable. Teachers, parents, guardians, priests, coaches and all visitors to schools or working with young people have to exercise the greatest of care. I am shocked that any priest would behave in this way. The priest of course may be absolutely innocent.

Homosexual grooming and predatory behaviour went on in seminary back in the day. I know for a fact. The clerical student who made advances towards me was known by faculty to have acted out before I entered seminary. He was subsequently ordained. The faculty knew of his predatory behaviour. The Church now has a pandemic of parasitic predatory gay men.

This is not true. Thomas was clearly gay on arrival to Maynooth. He, Ryan, and a small free others gathered nightly in a room in Middle Sanctium nicknamed “the Brothel”. It was the room of a Kildare student who left after philosophy and is now in a long term relationship with his friend. What happened inside the door of that room – plush with cushions, velvet headboard etc etc is anybody’s guess. But the known practice was that no shoes were allowed in there on the rugs.. no socks was preferred.
The group were evidently all gay. How active Tom was when he arrived is anybody’s guess – but he was clearly interested. He was prob a late ‘explorer’. The group were nasty queens in that they took over junior house that year and set a new level of gay control. They set a clear foundation for what 10 years later had grown into “strange goings on” that were so prevailing that were out of control and over flowed into the media.

Anyone who donates even one penny to these evil institutions or people is complicit in their evil.

Sorry, Sáty. I just love mind-bending teasers. The Romanists call it ‘mystery’, but they do have a tendency to overdress everything, even themselves for Mass.
It works the other way, too, you know: One-Of-Us-In-All-Three. I think philosophers call this ‘the ‘converse’, or something.
Anyway, it’s not all I crack it up to be, this Trinity thing. You know what they say: two’s company, three’s … The kids always gang up on me when there’s a moot point of doctrine. At least where you are, your word alone settles matters.
I wonder did I make a mistake when acknowledging myself and naming it ‘the Second Person’. There wasn’t a Third Person, yet…until I started loving the Second, and it loved me back. These things do take time. A work in progress.
Fond wishes,
Dad

It is a paradox that two institutions that are fundamentally gay – the RCC and the Conservative Party – both seem to attract young gay may as their most active adherants. Look at Maynooth and look at Tory supporter Twitter accounts if you are in any doubt. All the gay Tory boys were out in force in support of Penny Mordaunt and all their young researchers and special advisers seem to be gay. Likewise every sem and new priest since about 2000. It’s very strange.

How can homosexual grooming be a feature of life in Silverstream Priory? The VEC and Beda positively whiffed if not stank with the fetid stench of repressed and often unrepresssed homosexuality when I was there.
They didn’t seem to have eyes for the girls just the boys!
And the Rector seemed like a queer Madam showing of his resident talent – the fragrance of the homophile is putrid in an ecclesiastical context.
Elsie knows it and turns a blind eye as does Stock – Hume was appalling – his biggest concern was fuck who you like but for Gods sake dear boy be discrete.

Dear Readers…
Last week I detailed my disgust at the state of my diocese – Armagh, as a serving priest there for over 25 years. I stand over my comments, and pray that we receive better leadership soon.
Isn’t it telling of the internal schism and meltdown my diocese faces as Clerical Appointments are yet to be finalised and published. There is no authority, and even less in the way of a moral compass in Armagh.
Again, I take comfort from the noticeable fall in financial uptake, particularly in the wealthy parishes – one in particular receives less than 25% of its envelopes back each week. The lives of excess are only being paid for by the little people.
What of our scandalous Missing In Action (MIA) priests? Where have they hidden? Questions for the boss – but little the way of a reply…
