The Northern Ireland secretary says he will consider introducing compulsory relationship and sex education (RSE) in schools if the Department of Education does not.
BBC News NI has learned that Shailesh Vara has written to the department to inform them of his intention to act.
Mr Vara said he had a legal duty to act on the recommendations of a United Nations (UN) committee report on RSE.
It said RSE in Northern Ireland should be compulsory and comprehensive.
It said it should cover topics such as access to abortion and prevention of early pregnancy.
In response, the department said Education Minister Michelle McIlveen had written to the Northern Ireland secretary inviting him to meet her to discuss the issue.
In a statement to BBC News NI, a Department of Education spokesperson also said that RSE in schools in Northern Ireland “already provides opportunities for young people to learn about the implications of sexual maturation and the emotional, social and moral implications of early sexual activity”.
Each school in Northern Ireland is currently required by the department to develop its own policy.
PAT SAYS
It’s very important that in N. Ireland we have a professionally drawn up sex education programme and not one from any church that brings with it the overtones of sin, guilt and fear
We also need ALL our schools to be STATE SCHOOLS where Protestant, Catholic and other children are all educated together.
Segregated education has contributed to The Troubles and the hatred and killing in N. Ireland.
Church teaching and “morals” should be confined to the church, the home and Sunday school.
This is the essence of the separation of Church and State.
We need our governments and politicians to resist the churches wanting to use schools for their propaganda.
Churches should have the same status in law as golf clubs etc.
If churches and religious want to run their own schools they should pay for them 100%.
And they should be bound to the state curriculum in all subjects.

10.54 โessentialโ education! Is that what paedophile clergy and their professional lay protectors in schools are using to justify their unwanted tenure in schools these days? Perverts living a lie have nothing to offer kids except the potential to scar them for life & the complicity school staff will mind their jobs regardless of devastation to the lives of children & their families. Changes in legislation are urgently required to remove clergy & their relatives from all aspects in schools.

I believe that all schools, primary and secondary, north and south, should have comprehensive, age appropriate, sex education programmes. Parents of course must be informed about the content of any such programmes. There must be a moral grounding given to any sex education programme. Schools which are under denominational patronage must also have their space to provide their moral and religious teachings on social and ethical issues. It’s very easy to say “remove all faiths from schools”, as Pat says but it is a much more complicated matter than simply saying – “get out”. The question of school governing and management needs a deeper analysis and discussion. Personally, I believe the time has arrived when the Churches need to re-evaluate their role in schools. Many questionnaires have been answered and discussions have taken place in the south re: divesting of school patronage and the findings were very interesting. The majority of respondents were not in favour of change. However, I do believe that all religious education should be done at parish level and through the homes. This will happen. Times have changed, we are a multicultural society, also a more secular one with religious affiliation dwindling, apart from particular moments and rites of passage. Sometimes I despair at the time and energy required for school board of management, chaplaincy and the hours given to sacramental preparations for one day only, after which we rarely see children or families in church until another goodbye moment!! Saying this, after 42 years in Schools, I feel very privileged to have contributed in worthwhile ways to schools and education and have encountered some wonderful teachers, parents and school boards. But in 2022 the challenges are very different and radical changes are necessary. The separation of church and state will arrive but not in the simplistic way as described above.

I regularly question aspects of religious beliefs and their influence on “believers” behaviour. In doing so, at times I have asked religious proponents to provide evidence. It is revealing that responses are almost entirely ad hominem vitriol. Several easily identifiable individuals simply criticise the profession from which I retired over 20 years ago. In attempting to thereby deflect focus from their own religious shibboleths they simply demonstrate inadequacies at many levels.

It is important that the Church have a signal influence and role in the moral teaching of every child in Northern Ireland. This includes sex education, which must conform totally to the doctrines of the Magisterium. Children must be forbidden to use any form of birth control, be informed that sex outside marriage and homosexual acts are mortally sinful.
The Church will be regenerated spiritually through the moral moulding of our young. They will learn to be obedient to its wholesome teaching, and to respect the clergy.

Pat – the actual quotation is from Aristotle: โGive me a child until he is 7 and I will show you the man.โ
The phrase was repeated by St Ignatius Loyola.
The principle was that most significant human development happened before the age of 7, so it was the prime time to influence.
I would suggest however that it doesn’t work in all areas. Look at today’s Irish population, who were brought up by mass-going parents and attended religious schools. The huge level of rejection of faith and of the Catholic church shows that there is a lot of development happens after age 7.

There is no proff whatsoever that the Jesuits said that. In fact, the Jesuits constantly ask for someone to prove it. 12.50 it is very concerning to note the deafening silence from various Diocese along with blatant refusal to publish exact status and whereabouts of sex offender clergy and school chaplains etc. History keeps repeating itself – in due course weโve seen how these nasties turn up in unsuspecting & uninformed communities Scot free to do the same thing all over again & in the meantime their victims in previous locations will have been vilified & branded mad, bad, whatever the catlicks can get to stick. Utter libel & defamation via RCC & their complicit cover up merchants.

A good example of that is a bishop giving a good reference to a known abuser teaching priest, which enabled him to get a new job in a different and unsuspecting state school in a different county.

12.50 Interesting, proves clergy well able to motivate themselves in complicit facilitation of abusive colleagues whilst throwing their vulnerable victims to the wolves. Disgusting and so, so wrong. Beneath contempt. No wonder suicide rates & unexpected deaths so high amongst those oppressed by them & their ilk. Blood on their hands. They are an out and out disgrace for defending the indefensible in Roman Catholic Church interests.

The premise of all Catholic Sex Education is premised on the principle that the procreative cannot be separated from the unitive which they insist is the natural law.
They seek neat and tidy answers to complex human realities like sex and hold out a unrealistic ideal which nobody lives by especially themselves.
Two key things about sex from an education point of view is unwanted pregnancy and always unwanted but inevitable STDs.
Condoms, Condoms, Condoms.
O wait Catholic moral theology doesnโt permit Condoms โ we have a problem Houston!!
Oh and masturbation is as natural as sneezing or scratching an itch and morally neural whereas moral theology acts as if God himself is more concerned about a wank than a tank.

Fr Jennings aged 56 of Cloinkeerin, Frenchpark, Co Roscommon was sentenced 4 years in prison in May 2022 for multiple sexual assaults on a school boy in the 1990s. Monica Leech BL prosecuting outlined how the priest went to the victims home & molested him in his bed. He also sexually assaulted the boy a number of times whilst driving him around and molested him twice at locations in the school.
The victim said the abuse left him feeling ashamed and suicidal, he left school after his junior cert, turned to drugs and alcohol and lost his friends.
His first suicide attempt was a drugs overdose at age 19, he has been diagnosed with PTSD and the trauma of his abuse at the hands of Fr Jennings negatively affected his relationship with his family. He said that seeing Fr Jennings laughing and smirking in the Court was difficult. Patrick O Sullivan defending confirmed his client Fr Jennings was also a qualified Barrister and had a column in The Irish Times newspaper that ended as soon as the allegations came to light. The Judge Patricia Ryan rejected Defence barristers request for a non custodial sentence, adding it was a very serious breach of trust as Fr Jennings was a Chaplin at the school the boy attended. She noted that the grooming and assaults had impacted on the mental health of the victim, his relationships and interferes with his occupational life concluding that a custodial sentence was unavoidable in this case.

It is very strange and i do not believe that God wants us to return to a place where paedophilia was covered up and emphasis placed on palace sized buildings millions in the bank and that priesthood was looked on as a power in the family where one would inherit the farm one into professional career and one into the church . O what material power.
I start to believe in the church leaders when they shed off their powerful wealth stop the cover up on active gay relationships among priests and instead become the servant of all where the meaning of Gods LOVE can be experienced .imagine no homeless people no wars no divorces
no abortios no contraceptions and everyone leaving in harmony. Now that would be heaven where did the church go wrong?

The “Education Programme” should be impartial. It is factually correct that the secular state commits an abortion holocaust. It must also be voiced that people abhor the killing of innocent unborn children.
There is an age of consent. There has to be education for youth of a certain age around consent. Consentual procreational intimacy should bring procreational responsibilities.
