HOW CAN A PRIEST BE A KILLER AND BOMBER?

BBC

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-11058002

The Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland has released his long awaited report into the Claudy bombing which killed nine people in July 1972.

In it, he has effectively confirmed what many have believed for 38 years – a Catholic priest was involved in carrying out the atrocity and that the police, British government and Catholic Church conspired to keep that fact a secret.

The report said that police in 1972 believed that Father James Chesney was the IRA’s director of operations in south Derry and was directly involved with the Claudy bombings.

However, the police force at the time, the Royal Ulster Constabulary, never brought Fr Chesney in for questioning.

Fr Chesney was the curate in Cullion, one of the smallest parishes in County Londonderry, near the village of Desertmartin.

Ombudsman investigators spoke to a former Special Branch detective who said he had wanted to arrest Fr Chesney in 1972, but was told by an assistant chief constable (ACC) that matters were in hand.

That same ACC then wrote to the Northern Ireland Office asking what action “could be taken to render harmless a dangerous priest”.

He asked would it be possible to bring the subject up with cardinals or bishops.

In December 1972, a NIO official wrote back to the ACC to say that the matter had been discussed by the Northern Ireland Secretary Willie Whitelaw and Cardinal Conway, the head of the Catholic Church in Ireland.

The letter read: “The Cardinal said that he knew the priest was a very bad man. The Cardinal mentioned the possibility of transferring him to Donegal.”

The then RUC chief constable, Graham Shillington, said he would prefer a “transfer to Tipperary”.

Fr Chesney was moved to a parish in County Donegal in 1973, he died in 1980.

No paramilitary group has ever claimed responsibility for the bombing and no one has ever been convicted of it, but for more than 30 years rumours circulated that a Catholic priest and the IRA were behind the attack.

When the investigation into Claudy was re-opened in 2002, part of its remit was to investigate claims that the British government, RUC and the Catholic Church conspired to cover up the activities of the priest.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said that a search of papers from 1972 indicated that a priest in south Derry had been an active member of the IRA.

They did not name him, but few doubted the priest in question was Fr Chesney.

PAT SAY

Currently, we are celebrating the 50 th anniversary of the dreadful Claudy Bombing in which nine people were killed.

I cannot understand how anyone, especially a priest, would have it in them to murder anyone – especially innocent people.

Many Catholic members of the Republican paramilitary groups used the Catholic Church’s own teaching of “the just war” to justify their actions.

Most of us would agree that a just war is a war against invading aggressors.

But by 1969 the British had been in Ireland for 800 years. During that time they had inflicted massive wrongs and injustices against the Catholic and Nationalist community.

There was indeed widespread discrimination to be fought against.

And as somebody who has been in Northern Ireland for 44 years now I have to admit that the unjust Unionist Junta would have never ceded power without being forced to.

No reigning power in the world ever gave up power willingly.

It is a sad lesson of history that unjust regimes have so often had to be removed by the power of the gun.

I am very sad when reflecting on this.

But I simply cannot get my head around a priest blowing up innocent people.

To my mind it is the absolute anthitisis of what the priest follower of Christ is meant to do.

I think there is no doubt that without armed Republican activity there would have been no Sunningdale, Anglo Irish Agreement or successful 1998 power sharing. Catholics would likely still be in a position of disadvantage in NI. The gun works, as it did in 1920-1922.

The IRA had some stunning military victories including South Armagh, Brighton and Two Mile Water. But their disasters were numerous and Claudy was up there with the worst. There was outright incompetence in many bombings and attacks and innocents died for no gain only heartache for families and very bad press. The notion that a bombing would go ahead without warning because phonelines were down is appalling. It was also against IRA policy.

I dont blame the RCC for this – terrorists can come from anywhere. The priest was questioned, lied and politically it was far more dangerous to jail him than let him go. The RCC did pack him off to Donegal. That said he is definitely in Hell for his evil carelessness.

Dear Pat. The Claudy bombings, along with with many atrocities was supporterd by many clergy, and politicians during days we all wish to try forget, but never will. I was a young man in 1998 when Omagh happened. I fell out with my father immensely during this period, because he was a Republican supporter. After many difficult a time between us he whole heartedly agreed. I never could imagine that all these things were mistakes, not to all on both sides that lost more than us. I do believe Ireland will be a United Ireland in my lifetime, but not because of sectarian violence. Maybe I’m wrong on this??

Not GMT. Imagine leaving Paris after those years and going to Mayobridge. The transition will be challenging. I hope McArevey will not have the gumption to welcome him home; he who began a process against Hugh ( after advice from USA as there was no precedent here) : all because a dense and unintelligent student did not know the meaning of the word he was using, the word he was using had no application to what he meant: but McAreavey ploughed ahead and used it, a bad man.

Two reasons I think. Firstly Chesney might have kicked up a stink and made it very obvious he did indeed organise Claudy. Secondly such a public banishment would have further highlighted that he did indeed do it. It’s a long way to Tipperary.

3.20 Maybe he liked Tipperary, I certainly do, we used to go on holidays in Portroe when I was a boy. I later brought a group of Australians to a pub on the shores(or near) Lough Derg, the woman of the house cleared the place at the end of the evening with “Have ye not got homes to go to.” One of the Aussies still recounts the story with these words ” Irish pubs barge you in and then at the end f..k you out.”

9.37 sounds like the Tipperary people might have been less tolerant of this criminal priest in Tipperary, that’s possibly why police wanted him moved there but, of course, the church listen to no one, not even the police. Clerical Dictators.

Jimmy Chesney was also suspected as the mastermind behind a number of robberies for IRA funding.
In those days many parishes in south Derry held annual festivals. One of the big features was the erection of a marquee beside the church. Dances and monster bingo sessions were held. Great money spinners for the parish!
However, after a gala weekend it was not uncommon for those taking the proceeds to the bank to be robbed. The IRA got the blame but the man who supplied the information about when and where the cash would be in transit was Jimmy Chesney.
He died of cancer in his 40’s and is buried beside the church in Glen

It’s always easier to make judgments when we are removed from the reality of what happens in war or conflict. I abhor violence or war or aggression as a means of obtaining goals or objective in wanting territories or in fighting for independence. The world presently is in great turmoil, politically, economically and climatically. I condemn any violence where innocents are always casualties as happened so frequently in the north. That a priest should be involved in the murder of any person or persons is utterly contemptible and morally reprehensible. Political groupings in the North didn’t always effect the unity and peaceful outcomes desired by the majority. Any person involved in murderous activity in the North deserve condemnationan, trial and prison.

This is a terrible story, but alas not unique. So often self-interested parties and organisations protect their own so as to protect themselves and their reputations. We have seen this so egregiously in the child abuse scandal and the way the Church was more interested in protecting itself and its own than it was the vulnerable. In England, there was an Irish priest in Birmingham / Coventry that was hiding arms for the IRA. What happened to him ? Cardinal Conway should be squirming in his grave that he did not act robustly and directly about this priest connected to Claudy. He will have known the facts. In England, so often, not wanting to upset the applecart, not wanting to offend, wanting to protect the status quo and reputations led to decades of abuse of young girls by mostly Pakistani origin men who had a cultural contempt for anything not connected to Pakistan or Islam. The police, social services, churches, schools etc all turned a blind eye. It was easier to do so. And they got away with it, with no consequences and children went on to be abused and harmed for decades. Powerful, self-interested institutions will always look after number one. It will be happening now. Which is why it is good, even if imperfectly, for the likes of + Pat to run this blog and keep the bastards on their toes. Knock is a major money spinner for rcc. Imagine if it’s all full, brimming and heaving with pilgrims on any week. They have covered themselves in that area with nearly everything ranging from knock house hotel, St Mary’s hostel, museum, bascilia with array of new cashless kiosks around the bascilla but not old parish church. That gives you a perspective from their mindset-by looking at it. There are a number of issues at play here. When I write this I try to be as fair as possible.
Firstly Ger is pathologically mean. He cannot help it. It’s in his family too. Spending for him hurts terribly. I appreciate there have been victims of this – Karen, Yvonne etc – but the only way to deal with it is insist he pays his way. If he doesnt then dont take him anywhere. This whole ethos is worsened since he became a priest – many priests have their hand out for freebies, discounts and special treatment all the time. On top of being mean he has joined a very tight fisted profession.
Secondly Ger hasnt fully grown up yet and hasnt fully understood himself as a person. He may well be gay or bi. This is 2022 and perfectly normal in real life. There is nothing wrong with this. But he needs to look at himself and figure out what he is and in the meantime stop breaking hearts. So much of his and the women’s misfortune has been brought on by indecision and failure to understand relationships on a basic level. He can and will fix these issues I believe.
Lastly he must apologise to the women involved. It will bring closure for all and this is their due. He is fundamentally a good person: time for him to show it.

@7:34 I appreciate you being forthright in your opinion but I am convinced that he will never apologise. There is still too much unknown particularly in regards to the money he allegedly received from a benefactor.

Like

@10:39 There is much going on behind the scenes that you do not know about. I cannot comment more at this time. Don’t be fooled by Ger. He is far more devious than any one realises.

Like

@7:34 I am truly puzzled at how you can think that Ger is pathologically mean and yet fundamentally good at the same time…Am I missing something here? Ger’s best friend, Terry, who adheres to Pagan/Buddhist ideology claims that there is no good or bad; it just is. Is Ger a Buddhist? He spoke about Buddhism frequently and even went so far as to say that he was glad that I was coming around to the Buddhist philosophy. I was very much into Buddhism for awhile but not anymore. Terry was a tremendous influence on Ger. If Ger is more inclined towards the Buddhist way of thinking, then why does he hide behind the guise of Roman Catholicism? Is Ger bi-sexual? I am inclined to think so and as you stated, there is nothing wrong with that but then that begs the question, why did he become ordained in the first place? If Ger is fundamentally good then why doesn’t he do the right thing and resign immediately from the RCC, tell the truth about the 17+++ grand, apologise to the women he has so deeply hurt, and live an authentic life? It’s actually very simple yet Ger continues to make everything even more complicated for himself, the RCC and for the women who have been devastated by his dishonourable actions.

11:12 No mediation possible because the RCC has their own rules and procedures. Pat knows what is going on. I keep him in the loop. I cannot say any more at this moment.

@10.06 his meaness is pathological i.e. built into his DNA. It’s not learned. There are many people who know at least one if not more. They are embarassing to deal with or socialize with because they wont spend a penny. Aggravating factors in include living in the countryside (Irish “cute hoorism”) and joining the priesthood, a profession not generally known for handing out money (they collect it!).

This does not make him fundamentally bad. It is very hard to deal with though – you were too kind. Women generally run from this type of man. He abused your kindness. But its an illness. Weak, foolish – yes. A bad guy – no.

Like

@9.58 are there more blog revelations coming? Is there any mediation possible? I ask this because he is being torn to pieces on here. If he were a non-priest person this wouldnt be happening.

Speaking of creepy characters. See bishop fonz in Mej at youth fest. Will prob gather up a few more whacko religious orders for his diocese

7.34: Thus is a very balanced and wise comment. To support you is not in any way to condone Ger’s behaviour. I hope he will grow up, realise his wrongdoing, apologise and make amends of some kind. I also hope that the women will find closure soon. If any of us is wronged, hurt or belittled in any way by another, we don’t find peace until the offender offers sorrow and forgiveness and makes a gesture of sincere reparation. I have little time for anyone, priests especially, who abuse others financially, emotionally or sexually, which of all abuses is utterly repulsive and deserves the full rigour of civil courts.

Fair play to Hugh Connolly. He managed to dodge parish service in the 35 years since his ordination and only now, at the ripe age of 60, takes up his first parochial appointment, despite being a diocesan priest. Hope he doesn’t find it dull.

Pat, there is a time for everything under the sun. If you are still open to the idea; I would like you as a friend. With a friend, there is always a level of protection against the untruth. I am learning to trust your learning. Bill ( Mulvihill) Its late here but I love it. I love Australia and its raw honesty ( capable of the other as well!!!) It would be a source of “dis-edifiaction among the faithful” ( Cathal Daly/ Eugene Sweeney ) to know the number of times I have flown this route since 1997. I am proud…its coming up to a big 0.

4.29: Pat, this really is a bizarre posting for Bill to post. It’s absurd. It’s also a comment that raises questions about Bill’s stability. Why, if you’re so far away from home in Australia, presumably with “friends” would you need to ask anyone “can I be your friend and will you be my friend”!!! What is going on? The comment, like so many other of Bills comments is unrelated to the issue for today’s blog. Irrelevant and very worrying. I trust he’s ok.

No. It relates to a previous blog conversation that Bill and I had where I said I had presumed I was already a friend.

I think he is telling me that the status of being his friend is now confirmed.

4.02 The “real” question here is why an anonymous person or persons is pushing a persistent false narrative on a daily basis on this blog in reference to a named individual being Mr William Mulvihill clearly attempting to detract from the true facts that he is posting based on his years of experience inside the church system. Smacks of yet more sordid clerical toilet trouble in the pipeline, maybe the poster or posters should resign or Jump before pushed as what Mr Mulvihill has to say is clearly rattling them. Once again, a reminder that the FOCUS of this blog is in helping VICTIMS of church related abuse and wrong doing. Clergy & Co have their own outlets well financed by the Vatican so F*** O** & use them.

5.25, 6.09 and 6.33: I have no problem with Bill sharing his insider information. He seems to be very knowledgeable on the machinations and Machiavellian works within the Church. I don’t accept or believe it’s necessary for him to share his daily diet, personal life issues or travel stories or his whereabouts with us nor do I think all his meandering comments, often absurd and off topic to be printed every half hour. I have no difficulty with him staying on topic or sharing his insider information with us. So, I’m not asking for a censoring of Bill, merely asking that he stay on topic which is quite different from saying I want to muzzle him. As if such were possible! I accept that many issues would still be under the darkness if this blog did not exist. P.S…6.09 is Bill himself…and 5.25 is an “anonymous”….-having criticised me for being ANONYMOUS. Rather interesting, isn’t it 5.25? 😳😬😬😱😱🤡🤡..

My observations re knock shrine
Its not packed. 3 columns filled appropriately given every two rows empty due to covid 19.
Silver haired priest with glasses, who loved the sound of his own voice as assistant priest from India was relegated to sitting role, voiceless. 5 or 6 Indian priests did the job re anointing of the sick. Lay ministers did the rest re distribution of HC while people were sitting.
Aointing of the sick resumed at last. That wasn’t there last time around.
Cash collection returned at last given array of cashless kiosks at entrance/s of the basicila.
Majority of OAP’s especially women around.
Lovely weather today. I’m off to tribes.

4.40: Deaf Guy: In all honesty, what’s the relevance of your Knock observations apart from “knocking” it as a place of prayer, peace and spiritual comfort for many? Get a grip, DG. You can be quite supercilious at times.

I try or evoke an image of knock shrine on that day. It might be of no relevance to you or anybody.
It might bring some comfort or solace plus peace to some people such as others (especially) wimmen. Lots of frailer look shook which I hasn’t seen it in knock for very long time.
Relevance for me was the numbers attending there were quite significantly down more than pre Covid numbers.
I might confess ‘supercilious’ in next confession 😁😉.
