THE IRISH CISTERCIAN CRISIS – POST RICHARD PURCELL SCANDAL.

Given the difficult situations of the communities of Mount Melleray, Roscrea, and Mellifont, during a meeting of superiors of the Region of the Isles in Brownshill (Bernardines, England) in June, the Abbot General proposed a plan, including the naming of one Father Immediate for all three communities and the appointment of one Monastic Commissary for all three communities. Each community would continue to live where it is, but there would be one formation house for all three communities, and other structures of mutual help.

This proposal was studied in the communities and, after reflection, all three communities, by a vote of their conventual chapter, agreed in principle to accept it. Suggestions from the communities were incorporated into the plan.

The juridical status of the communities has been as follows –

Mount Melleray: Since the resignation of Dom Richard Purcell as abbot of Mount Melleray in November 2021, the abbatial office has been vacant. The Father Immediate of Mount Melleray since October 2020 has been Dom Michael Ryan, abbot of Bolton.

MOUNT MELLERAY

Roscrea: Dom Malachy Thompson has been superior ad nutum of Roscrea since 2018. Since the abbatial office at Mt Melleray (Father Immediate of Roscrea) is vacant, Dom Michael Ryan of Bolton has functioned as Father Immediate of Roscrea since November 2021.

ROSCREA

Mellifont: Since the resignation of Dom Brendan Freeman as superior ad nutum of Mellifont in November 2021, the abbatial office has been vacant. Since the abbatial office at Mt Melleray (Father Immediate of Mellifont) is vacant, Dom Michael Ryan of Bolton has functioned as Father Immediate of Mellifont since November 2021.

MELLIFONT

After consultation with the communities, who expressed their consent by a vote of their respective conventual chapters,

(1) On July 16th, 2022Dom Michael Ryan of Bolton delegated his responsibility as Father Immediate of Mount Melleray to Dom Brendan Freeman of New Melleray Abbey.

(2) On July 16th 2022, the Abbot General, with the consent of his Council, in the name of the General Chapter appointed Dom Brendan Freeman of New Melleray Abbey as Father Immediate of Roscrea and of Mellifont.

(3) On August 2nd 2022 Dom Malachy Thompson offered his resignation as superior ad nutum of Roscrea to the Father Immediate, Dom Brendan Freeman, who accepted it.

(4) On August 3rd 2022 the Abbot General, with the consent of his Council, in the name of the General Chapter, suspended the exercise of the autonomy of the communities of Mount Melleray, Roscrea, and Mellifont, and authorised Dom Brendan Freeman, Father Immediate, to name a Monastic Commissary for all three communities in accordance with the Statute on Fragile Communities.

(5) On August 3rd 2022 Dom Brendan Freeman appointed Fr Rufus Pound as Monastic Commissary of Mount Melleray, Roscrea, and Mellifont. Dom Rufus is a monk of Mt St Bernard Abbey who had been claustral prior at Mellifont since November 2021. He will carry out his responsibilities in accordance with the Statute on Fragile Communities and with the plan mentioned above.

Further details will be given at the General Chapter in September.

PAT SAYS

What we are seeing here is the Cistercians regrouping for two reasons:

1. The decline of vocations.

2. The Richard Purcell scandal.

Really, the 5 Cistercian monasteries should be amalgamated in one monastery- probably the mother house Mount Mellerary.

But monks can be just as difficult as others and the monks are not all cooperating with the required changes.

The two monasteries with abbots – Portglenone in Antrim and Moone in Kildare are refusing to be amalgated.

The other three, Mellifont, Roscrea and Mellerary are now being turned into a monastery with three campuses with one novitiate one Commissary and one Father Immediate.

The Cistercians were already in great decline in Ireland.

I realise this comment is not related to today’s blog but, I have to know why a Dublin priest officiated at the civil ceremony of Joe Brolly and his new wife? From what I have researched, the Bishop must give permission for a priest to bless a civil marriage. Given that Joe is divorced with a number of children, I have to ask why a priest is blessing a civil union. Is this a new practice in the RCC?

I was about to ask the same question. As Joe was married for many years and fathered five children is it possible he obtained an annulment ? If so why wasn’t he married in church.?. ( for example Daniel and Majella O’ Donnell ) And is a marriage celebrated by the side of a river recognised in Church law.? And do you have to be famous to get one of these annulments? Many questions. Can you help us out here + Pat.

To celebrate religious marriages you must be nominated by a church. I imagine that when a priest leaves tge RCC his nomination by the RCC would be withdrawn.
I am the nominating person for The Oratory Society. I can nominate persons and withdraw the nomination.
Each religious body must also submit its rite of marriage to the registrar general.
Nobody can celebrate marriages without being nominated by a church a religious body of a humanist nominator.

Just to reiterate an important fact here, which is that Dom Richard was ELECTED abbot by the chapter of Roscrea and subsequently ELECTED abbot by the chapter of Mount Melleray. Whatever the impact of his abbacy it was self inflicted.
It also isn’t true that the monasteries had no other option. I believe Dom Richard had to get a dispensation to be abbot, either through age or length of profession, so normally would not have been the obvious candidate. If there was no obvious candidate for abbot the monks could have asked for a superior from another monastery, could have elected a monk of another monastery, could have asked for an arrangement like the one now in place or asked to be suppressed.
In the past few years in the English Benedictine Congregation both Downside and Portsmouth have had monks of other monasteries appointed prior administrator and have then elected them abbot. The whole point of these orders and confederations is that you get help.
Incidentally if some of these monasteries were of women, under Cor Orans they certainly would be suppressed post haste. I don’t know why it’s accepted that unviable communities of men limp on.

12.18 His ‘election’ was a little more intricate than that, it was assiduously planned. Not self inflicted, but definitely inflicted.

William, as you know the slightest acquaintance with monastic history soon tells you how monasteries are hotbeds of politicking, competition and intrigue.

Fr Benedict Andersen of Silverstream Monastery reported to Sarah McDonald of The Irish Independent newspaper in September 2021 that there was a culture of habitual boundary crossing in almost every area of community life: spiritual, emotional, physical and material/financial. This is also commonplace outside of Silverstream monastery. Report your concerns and experiences with documentary evidence to Bishop Pat.

10.30 Did not like to say but your comment brings it on; I mean it entirely respectfully and seriously , it is indeed very sad; where you find a monastery in the last 100/150 years, invariably there is a Psychiatric Facility not too far away. Monasteries; terrible places for the vulnerable monks in the power of the more powerful ones ( like Choir Sisters and Lay Sisters in a Mercy Convent…appalling.) Stroud was founded to “help’ those sisters.

Like

William at 11:10 In the past I think monasteries numbered many among lay brothers or extern sisters who may have been considered ‘sub’ at the time or would be considered vulnerable today. Nowadays after so many decades of education, nobody in a monastery is actually legally vulnerable. The word you are looking for is foolish.
This may sound like I’m being very harsh but my view is founded on experience.
For example in a certain monastery in England an elderly monk was treated like absolute shit by his abbot and everyone felt sorry for him. When you know that that monk voted for the abbots profession in full knowledge of all the good reasons he should not have been professed it looks different.
Feeling sorry for adults is just trying to excuse them from the consequences of their own actions.

It might be noted that the second Chechen war, at the opening of the putin era, was launched in 1999 with a false flag fsb bombing of russian apartments and one notable happening was the systematic rape of captured Chechen fighters by russian troops. Thanks to the menaces and weakness of russia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan would join NATO if invited. I could have been in a lot of trouble for the false accusation for I could not prove I didn’t do it. Luckily Stephen Grey ( on of the finest Gentleman ever in every way) who had actually done it came forward. No key had been used…a card had been used. If God can forgive whom he pleases, then why doesn’t he just forgive everyone anyhow, regardless of whether they be sorry or not. Satan, too. Heck! Why did he go through all that drama on Calvary when he could just have forgiven everyone for everything, and saved himself the bother.

You cannot say that God can’t forgive because he could.
You are having a go at the Catholic solution of free will but you are using it to limit God too much.
My favorite solution to this problem is actually the Calvinist one of double predestination because it is completely logical and rightly paints God as the driving force here: so that he has predestined us all for salvation and damnation.
Personally I am the only Calvinist predestined to damnation so it really doesn’t matter what I do.

You’ve made the classic mistake, like the woman speaker at Tobhar Mhuire retreat centre in Crossgar, of treating forgiveness as a stand-alone concept. It isn’t, and never was.
Forgiveness is a grace, but like any unwanted gift, it can be returned to sender.
Forgiveness must be sought, and received, voluntarily and willingly. Otherwise we reject healing from God, a balm for a fractured relationship with the Divine.

If you don’t want God to be able to intervene you may be happier with Voodoo where, contrary to popular belief, there is only one God but he isn’t involved in the world in any way.
BTW if you pray for stuff you’ve just contradicted yourself. πŸ’ͺπŸ«’πŸ€«πŸ€’πŸ˜’

Scandals of any kind in institutions – civil, ecclesial, political, commercial – leave a legacy which makes us very mistrusting, unbelieving, suspicious and questioning. If the scandals are of a serious nature we find it difficult to trust again. Likewise with the Church. Apart from the scandals of sexual abuse, corruption and cover up and the reports of morally reprehensible behaviours by clerics, many one time fervent Catholics are no longer walking in faith and unity with us. The pandemic has speeded up by about 5/10 years the eventual erosion and disappearance of our Catholic identity but not necessarily our Christian identity. The ripple effects of the “searching” around for services and masses during the pandemic has somehow brought us into the “I can do it for myself: I can walk with God myself” mind set. For that again many have seriously questioned the truthfulness, veracity, relevance or need for religious faith or for a communal expression of it. Many have decided to cut their ties with what they see as a very corrupted Church. Irrespective of bad publicity the Cistercians have received in recent years in various monasteries, there would still be a natural decline of members. Monasticism, as we know it, is not attracting men or women, yet some of the stricter monasteries in the USA attract many. But in Ireland, the Cistercians will fade in time. It would make greater sense to have all remaining monks in Ireland in one house. It might have greater effect on the landscape of faith and religious presence. I have stayed in almost all Monasteries in Ireland and am saddened that they are fewer monks. We live in a society that is now more secular, materialistic, with greater education, work opportunitues and values religious celebrations more as rites of passage, not as life time realities or choices. Yes, the self inflicted opprobrium, spiritual and moral shame which befell the Church are contributory factors in a march towards (total) irrelevance. Only a remnant will remain…Am I hopeful for a reviving, influential and enlightening remnant? No.

A significant difference between the commercial world and the church is if a business gets a terrible reputation they just change their name (for example Hermes is now Evri and is still shit), but the church can’t do that.

Religion isn’t the opium of the people, as Charles Dickens surmised, its the pacifier (or Dummy teet) for the insecure.
Have you not noticed that when they thrive, they pray less, if at all?
Clergy absolutely need people to feel insecure and frightened (hence the s***e about Hell) because its good for business.
Someone posted earlier that priests keep people infantilised, dependent. That’s true. Why? Cos it’s good for business.
Religion is a business, not a charity, and should be taxed as such. That’s my theology.

” Forgivness” is an antiquated concept. The hurt or wrong inflicted must be worked through by the offended and the offender. Forgiveness is about “power over.” Ridiculously medieval for the Zeitgeist.

Like

Forgiveness is, ultimately, about reconciliation. Only the offender can unlock the offended’s capacity to forgive. So yes, there is a strong element of restorative justice about the process, and forgiveness is a process.

It annoys me no end when I hear spiritual charlatans, like the woman I once listened to at Tobhar Mhuire retreat centre, handle forgiveness as a stand-alone concept, separated from repentance. This nonsense places the full responsibility, and the weight of it, on the shoulders of the sinned-against rather than the sinner. How cruel! In reality, it is, as you implied, a joint enterprise. And so with God’s relationship with any of us.

I have sympathy for the Cistercians in Ireland. All the eggs were put in one basket. One man alone was seen as the saviour. Altar angel. Boilerhouse devil.

12.33: Bill, forgiveness is not an antiquated concept. It’s very iften thec1st step towards reconciliation, healing and new life. It’s the most difficult of virtues and Christian vvalues but an integral one. I have been very hurt by a particular experience and it took me a long time to forgive but I do not forget the experience. The forgiveness didn’t restore normal relationships but the experience no longer hurts me like a share of glass. The other persons: they too are getting on with their lives. I’m not happy when we imprison others by un-forgiveness but it’s not an easy journey of the heart. Remember the true original meaning of the word β€œforgive” as used in the story of the Prodigal Son: TO LET GO OF….(Italian: perdonare – to give completely without reservation). Reflect on the Father in the story….he had already β€œlet go” of any resentment or hurt once he saw his son in the distance – coming home. Therein lies the challenge.

Is a β€œMonastic Commissary” a superior over more than one house. Can anyone explain their role?

Like

Apologies for the long copy and paste:
This has been a busy time for Fr. Brendan, our superior. In the middle of May, he traveled to our daughter house in England, Mount Saint Bernard. Dom Joseph, the abbot, had submitted his resignation which was accepted by the Abbot General and his council. Mount St. Bernard is facing a number of critical issues and the responsibilities were taxing Dom Joseph’s physical and emotional health. In addition to the problems of diminishing human resources in the community, the buildings of the monastery are in drastic need of repair. They no longer meet requirements of the local fire code. Electrical wiring is inadequate, the roof needs replacement, etc. The monastery was designed by Augustus Welby Pugin, a noted British architect (β€œGod’s Architect”) and is listed on official registrars.
After consulting with the community, Fr. Brendan appointed Fr. Peter Claver (81) as the new superior. Fr. Brendan was invited to attend the Regional Meeting of the Isles which was held at the same time. He returned to be present for the scheduled meeting of the Commission for the Future of New Melleray Abbey, May 31st and June 1st.
The Commission for the Future is a group of five experienced persons, together with two monks of the local community, who are invited to assist the community to look realistically at its situation, not only from a human point of view, but especially from the point of view of faith. An experience of fragility should be accepted as an invitation of the Lord to choose life by entering into the Paschal mystery. (Statute on the Accompaniment of Fragile Communities) The members of this commission are: Dom Peter McCarthy, OCSO (our delegated Father Immediate); Dom Gerard D’Souza, OCSO, of Genesee Abbey, Archbishop Jerome Hanus, OSB (retired archbishop of Dubuque and currently residing at Conception Abbey, MO); Mother Rebecca Stramoski, OCSO, abbess of Our Lady of the Mississippi; Mr. David Schueller (a long-time financial advisor of the community); and Dom Brendan Freeman, superior of New Melleray and Fr. David Bock, representing the monks of the community.
The Commission met for two days in an attempt to assess the difficulties and realities the community is facing. It shared its observations and discernments with the community in a meeting at the end of the second day. All the members of the Commission were present for any questions or comments. The following day, Dom Peter met individually with all the monks who were free to give their personal responses and reactions. The whole discernment process led by Dom Peter was universally affirmed as constructive and realistic. The Commission will return again next year to reflect with us on our responses and developments.
The major thrust of the report was to direct the community’s thinking and planning to anticipate an even smaller community of ten monks in the near future. A serious issue is our capability of receiving and offering an integral monastic formation to new entries. Do we have the resources to provide leadership from within the community? We have already been adjusting our liturgy and the use of buildings and space to the decreased population in the community. The positive ground of hope for the future is the unity and mutual support that presently exists among us. Our challenge is to reimagine the ways we live together as a place of eminent, continuous formation so that our structures do not overburden us but serve the spirit which unites us in Christ.
Fr, Brendan again left on June 15th to attend the U.S. Regional meeting at Villa del Mar, California. This is a retreat house which overlooks the Pacific Ocean. He is due back home on the 24th. Our new Abbot General, Dom Bernardus, has been attending all the regional meetings in preparation for the General Chapter (Part II) from September 1st to 25th in Assisi, Italy. No doubt the choice of Villa del Mar as the venue for our regional meeting was intended to provide a consistent cultural ambience for the discussions. Bona sera.

Personally if I was 81 and it was even suggested I could be superior I would tell them what to do.
It feels like there are a lot of Cistercian monasteries that should have been mothballed years ago and certainly shouldn’t have been taking novices.
There are several Benedictine monasteries in England which as far as I know are taking novices but certainly shouldn’t be, even if they shouldn’t have been closed.

Like

I was wondering that but the phrase is used repeatedly on the OCSO website, for example:
Dom Charles Albanese, abbot of Saint Benedict’s Abbey, Snowmass (Archdiocese of Denver, USA) since 2019, has presented, for personal reasons, his resignation to the Abbot General. With the consent of his Council, the Abbot General accepted the resignation. It became effective on the 29th July 2022.
At the request of Dom Vincent Rogers, abbot of Spencer and Father Immediate of Snowmass, the Abbot General, with the consent of his council, has suspended the exercise of the autonomy of the community of Snowmass, according to the Statute of the Accompaniment of Fragile Communities (10+16).
Dom Vincent Rogers, abbot of Spencer and Father Immediate of Snowmass, has appointed on 29th July 2022, Dom Damian Carr, former abbot of Spencer, as Monastic Commissary of the Abbey of Snowmass.
Try as I might I couldn’t find the Statute of the Accompaniment of Fragile Communities they refer to. Normally for Benedictines fragile communities are made dependent on another monastery and a local superior appointed, and this seems to be the equivalent.

A problem for the OCSO is the aggressive approach adopted by the past pupils in Roscrea. The school was due to close until the past pupils made promises. Needless to say these assurances were not followed through and a massive deficit continues. Mal Thompson was up to his neck in this issue. A decision on the school in Roscrea is inevitably due. The property is worth money , it is a no brainer.

Like

Agreed, the way they promised the sun, moon and stars and then left the college and the monks high and dry is unforgivable. It will make the decision to close a bit easier but the students and staff will be left abandoned. Malachy Thompson has full control of the college so it will be on him. I have been told he has been keeping the problems hidden to save face. It is an absolute disaster.

In the future, people will find it hard to comprehend why parents sent their children off at 7, 11 or 13, out of the family home, to live in a barracks of a school with adult strangers, with attendant risk of bullying and abuse. Do such parents hate their offspring?

Like

Very true, what goes through the minds of parents who send their 13 year son to a place like Roscrea. Dark and devoid of anything. Elderly monks living onsite and little or no student activities after 3pm. The school website promises loads but nothing happens. Boarding schools are an antiquated concept. Children need parents or guardians to chat to every evening after school. Boarding schools result in problems being covered up and children not having the chance to breath after the cut and thrust of a school day. Boarding schools are like prisons. They need to be inspected properly. Significant child protection issues are ignored.

Like

And presumably in single-sex schools such as Roscrea, boys are separated from their sisters (if they have them) for half the year, and girls who board are separated from their brothers. It’s an odd life. Humans have one of the longest childhoods in the animal kingdom and should be at home with their families, not packed off to an institution.

The commisary of an OCSO house with suspended government must be a member of a religious institute. The commissary is to appoint at least two advisors to assist in the task of governance. The advisors can be from within or from without the monastery and could be lay persons. The commissary is to involve the members of the Community in decision-making when advisable and in deciding the future of the monastery.
The role of the commissary is general oversight of the community, that is, to assure the daily care of the members so that they can continue to live life together in the fullest way possible. Therefore, the commissary does not need to live at the monastery. Rather, the commissary can appoint someone else to take care of the daily needs of the community. This person could
be a member of the monastery or another religious institute or perhaps an employee such as the business
manager.
Because there is suspended regular government, there are few, if any, canonical decisions to be made.
The monastery does not accept new members, it does not make major financial decisions, and there are no
canonical appointments to be made.
There are a number advantages to suspending the regular government of a monastery and appointing a
commissary. First, the community remains together and continues to live life in the manner of their monastery with adjustments for the age and number of members. Second, an on-site administrator from another monastery is not required. Third, other
monasteries do not need to accept transfers to their community. Fourth, if the monastery must be continued in existence for some reasons, the
monastic congregation through its leadership does not have to become the canonical governing body of the monastery. In the OCSO houses, this may be the Father Immediate.
In short, a commisary or his delegate oversees houses that are being allowed to die out, rather than merge with other houses, with equally aged members, because the disruption to all is too much.

Like

In the past when a monastery could no longer sustain itself because of insufficient membership and leadership, most monastic congregations sought to sustain the monastery, if possible, by appointing
someone from another community. Benedictines normally use the term β€œadministrator” while Cistercians of the Strict Observance use the term
β€œsuperior ad nutum.” If appointing an administrator were not feasible or would not solve the problem, the
monastery was suppressed as an autonomous house.
In some instances, the monastery became a dependent monastery of another monastery. In other cases, the members transferred and moved to a single monastery or to various different monasteries.
For the monastic congregations in the West, the reality is that there are not sufficient monastics from other monasteries available to be administrators. Monasteries which have members who could be
administrators need the members for positions in their own monasteries and in many cases also need sufficient income from such members. It is also true that there are not enough β€œstrong” monasteries to be able to absorb large numbers of monastics from monasteries that are suppressed.
In many instances, transferring older members to other monasteries with an aging population merely delays the inevitable. Further, transferring to other monasteries can be disruptive for the members and difficult for them to adjust to a new community which has its own unique culture and relationships.
At times, a monastic congregation could not suppress a monastery immediately because there were
members who did not transfer or seek an indult of departure (dispensation). Therefore, the monastery had to stay in existence until there were no more
members. The result has been that the president and council of the monastic congregation had to maintain a β€œfictitious” monastery and provide both canonical and corporate governance.
However, is there another possibility that permits the members of a small and older community which can no longer fulfill the requirements for regular governance to stay together as an autonomous monastery? The answer is β€œyes.” The possibility is referred to as the β€œsuspension of regular government” of the monastery and the appointment of a commisary.
The regular government of an autonomous monastery consists of three parts: the monastic leader
plus the other members of the leadership staff, the conventual chapter, and the monastic council. Each part requires not just β€œwarm bodies” but persons who are capable of fulfilling their respective duties in
governance. When one or more of these parts is not possible in a monastery, then the regular government of the monastery is no longer possible.
