WAS A MURDERING CISTERCIAN MONK PROTECTED AT MELLINFONT ABBEY IN CO. LOUTH?

ANOTHER IRISH CISTERCIAN SCANDAL?

This week we heard that a murder had taken place in the past connected to New Mellifont Abbey in Collon in County Louth.

A dead woman’s body was buried in a well.

She was a local woman, not from Collon but a neighbouring parish.

The well was outside the monastery walls.

It was portrayed as a suicide.

It is reported that she was pregnant.

The suspect was a monk who had an affair with her and made her pregnant. He had help with disappearing the woman.

Nobody was ever charged with the murder.

The monks had a habit of exchanging land for silence.

Not all transfer of land by the monks were connected to this case.

Some land transfers were perfectly legitimate.

The priest who tells this story knows all the details and the names of the people involved.

He is not naming names as some of the deceased woman’s relatives still live on the area

I do not know the year of these happenings.

As we know from recent revelations many babies and orphans died in religious houses and were buried in secret graves.

It’s perfectly plausible that a number of women and men perished in monasteries etc and their fates were never made known

Mellifont is in the Archdiocese of Armagh.

Is the account of the Mellifont killing held in Armagh’s secret archives.

AND if there are still people alive who knew about this killing do they not have a moral obligation to report it to the Gardai?

Is the woman and her baby not crying out for justice from the grave?

230 replies on “WAS A MURDERING CISTERCIAN MONK PROTECTED AT MELLINFONT ABBEY IN CO. LOUTH?”

I sincerely hope that if anyone with information, still alive, would come forward. Is this a truth and fact that a pregnant woman was buried in a well at Melifont? What decade are we talking about? I trust this isn’t a hearsay story. Might it have been better to try to establish some reliable evidence, if any, before you wrote abiut this story? All kinds of theories will be presented and the monks will be vilified. TRUTH MATTERS.

As we have taken from the sensational revelations about Ryan McAleer and other issues, Armagh is a very concerning problem for the RCC in Ireland at the moment.
Questions remain:
– Has Ryan McAleer given an account or answered the allegation?
– Is he still ministering as a priest of the diocese?
– Who is funding his drunken Belgian ‘mistakes’ and unnecessary PhD?
– Why is a secondary school in the Dungannon area forging links with Maynooth and Leuven University, with apparent links to Ryan McAleer?
– Was there a canonical investigation in Armagh in 2020 into his misbehaviour? What were the details of this process and outcome?
– Are the current two universities he studies at aware of his history?

You are assuming that the woman’s family was told, at the time, that she had died. Were they? The woman might have been treated as a missing person by her family.
If this was a murder rather than a suicide, then her body, and that of her baby, were dumped down a well to conceal the fact.

As this involves the Cistercians, cover up and lies are their default. The OCSO like to portray an order made up of devout and holy men and women. This is far from reality. The Cistercians are made up of many individuals who are devious and callous. They treat each other appallingly. Bullying and abuse are rife within monasteries. The Cistercians use people with little regard for their human dignity. Monasteries like Roscrea are in free-fall, mismanaged for years. The Cistercians will reap what they sow.

This is the Irish Free State or Republic of Ireland we are dealing with. A Roman Catholic confessional state as morally corrupt as the Roman Catholic institutional church itself.

I think you’re ‘tripping’ Chris, the R.O.I. may have been a Catholic confessional state in the good oul days. That was many years ago, today it’s one of the most woke states in Europe. The Church has little or no influence at all now, as the recent referendums show and the comments on this blog prove it.

Like

No, I’m not ‘tripping’, and you’re wrong. We aren’t talking about the present-day Republic of Ireland, but as it was decades ago. A period very much the ‘good oul days’ of Roman Catholic Church influence on Irish society.
Pat reckons the incident occurred sometime between 1950 and 1970. It may even have happened earlier, say, before 17 April 1949, when the Irish Free State became the Republic of Ireland. If Pat is right, the influence of the Roman Catholic Church on Irish society was at its zenith. It is not an intellectual stretch to believe, at least as plausible, that this church had the power at the time to cover up something as wilful even as murder by one of its monks.

The priest is more than morally bound to report to the police what he knows about this incident: he is legally bound to do so.
If he has known this information for quite some time, then he has committed a criminal offence by remaining silent. Which, in turn, means that he is highly unlikely ever to report what he knows.

He is telling this story under the double cloak of 1. anonymity and – 2. can’t say because it would upset relatives.

You didn’t publish my comment, Pat, about the priest who won’t report to the Garda what he knows about this horrific incident, and your failure to condemn him for not doing so. Why?
You appear to be operating a double standard. On the one hand, you say, rhetorically, (and in bold type for emphasis) that ‘ANYONE’ alive who has information about the incident is obligated to report it to the police (more than obligated: it is a criminal offence not to). And yet, this priest is both alive AND in the know, but is remaining silent. So, it appears, are you, by refusing to condemn his silence directly. Is this because he is feeding you information about the matter, and you don’t want the well to run dry by criticising him directly?

Surely, Pat, the details of this possible crime wouldn’t cause a scandal now. A possibly pregnant, unmarried woman dead by apparent suicide? Who would give a damn these days, in terms of moral judgement and condemnation? Ireland is a very differnt place from the morally excoriating one she must have known. So, why would her relatives want the incident kept quiet? Aren’t you being presumptive? It makes no sense at all that poor woman’s relatives would not want this brought into the open, and thoroughly investigated to rule out, or in, foul play. But it DOES make sense that the Romanists, especially the Cistercians, would prefer to keep this matter buried, as it were.

For it to have been portrayed as suicide, the body must have been found. This suggests she drowned in the well (perhaps with some assistance, perhaps suicide). If so, then surely there will have been reports in the local press about the death, or some memory in the local community of the incident.

It most certainly is if a person’s failure to report a crime is part of a conspiracy to protect the perpetrator and to help him evade justice.

I think the well perpetrator is probably resting in a monastery graveyard.

Correct, 3.43.
The PPS (Public Prosecution Service) has legal jurisdiction in Northern Ireland, not the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service).

This is a matter for the Gardai full stop. Pat you are legally obliged to contact the Gardai with this info. Then again you are in the UK so the rules might not apply to you. But in all fairness you and your priest friend should be calling the cops. This is very serious and failure to take action is in essence complicity.

Did your priest informant, Pat, receive his information under the so-called ‘seal of confession’? Is this why he won’t report to the Garda all that he knows on the incident? I suspect it is.
His ‘concern’ for the living relatives of this poor woman and baby is just a cover story for him, isn’t it?

Like

3.52: Pat, I’m amazed at this blog today: you posted a story which no one seems to have been aware of except a priest informant. No one so far today has given any credible information. You have allowed what “may” be a very tragic story to be used by commenters to vent their fury at the monks. Did your priest informer give a year in which this supposedly happened? I do not agree with the vitriol being published without corroborated facts. If your priest reporter is supposed to have fulfilled all his ethical and legal responsibilities, why do we not know what decade we are referring to? Do you know if the incident is being pursued by civil authorities? Are the Melifont monks being investigated?

Like

I don’t know the year. The monks went to Mellifont in 1938.

I think we are talking 1950 to 1970.

I have a name. The priest will neither deny or affirm I have the right man.

From this date forward this blog, with the agreement of Bishop Patrick Buckley, will be exposing wrongdoing and cover-ups within the Archdiocese of Armagh. We the AAG are a collection of professionals, survivors and laity who feel the time has come to address serious matters publicly.
Matters pertaining to among others, Rev Fr Ryan McAleer are but one avenue which will be pursued. We will also be investigating the recreational activities, thought to be of public interest, of several clerics in neighbouring parishes to Dungannon, Keady, Mullaghbawn, Lower Killeavy and Magherafelt. We are self funded and undeterred.

I have been told by a priest that use to be in the group. They are non penetrative as it is safer STI wise. They are basically a masturbating group but even that is immoral and wrong.

Others who weren’t in print nor common knowledge by now was the names of CBS who abused it (redress board didn’t pass it on to the gardai)plus a deceased top chief garda commissioner whose brother was a CBS superior, who ran after young handsome deaf boys in the dorm.
Politicans who had visited Cabra (common knowledge, press photos, school book photos et al) were Liam cosgrave of FG govt plus his late father as well, dev himself, Michael Woods, Frank mc cluskey, Archbishop mc quaid, Archbishop D Martin, recently Farrell etc.

I also questioned the integrity of the priest who would have this information but not feel obliged as a man, never mind a priest, to report that information to the police.

I don’t get this. Your priest reporter isn’t naming names because some of the dead woman’s relatives live in the area???? How on earth is that a reason not to give them closure by providing all that pertinent info?
If this priest knows so much, was he present when the woman was allegedly murdered and her remains thrown down a well? Did he assist? Is he a Cistercian, too. The fact he knows so much suggests he is.
Bishop Buckley, this man is a disgrace. He is keeping the woman’s family in emotional limbo, because he hasn’t the moral spine to do the right and decent thing. Shame on him! Shame on them all!
