MELLIFONT ABBEY – DAY 2.

A former Abbot of Mount Mellifont told me personally in the mid 1970s that up until that date he had had 18 sexual liasons / affairs in his time in Mellifont.

He said that he was bisexual and his sexual exploits had been with both men and women.

When in his presence his hands roamed as he attempted to feel the backside and groin areas of his penitents.

His conversation both inside and outside Confession was very sexually charged and he liked to hear the minute details of people’s sins and failures.

He said that he only stopped having sex with people when an unrelated illness prevented him from getting erections.

As a seminarian and young priest I was keenly aware that I was being sexually pursued.

I had no attraction to the man whatsoever and anyway at the time I was deeply repressed and also regarded all such sexual activity as immoral and gravely sinful.

At the time I thought his behaviour was a one off – restricted to him as a “weak” or sinful monk.

At the time we all idolised the Cistercians and regarded them as living saints.

But clearly we see that my monk was not a one off.

The case of Richard Purcell proves that.

And I know of other Cistercian monks who have been sexually active inside and outside The monastery walls.

Purcell is ot the only Irish Cistercian monk to have been homosexually active and visited the Boilerhouse.

I do not know if “my monk” was involved in the impregnation of the woman found in the well.

I have mentioned his name to the priest who told me about the well death.

He has neither denied or affirmed whether he was the one.

In the Middle Ages monasteries were places of utter debauchery.

It looks as if things have not changed that much since.

Except now we have GRINDR and the Boilerhouse.

I also think that monks and their friends had a way in the past of making victims an accusers disappear for ever!

Could that happen now?

I used to be a Benedictine novice, left because of this sort of thing and can confirm the sexual goings on are accurate for monastic life. I haven’t come across a murder but wouldn’t put it past them.

I spent many days on retreat in practically all the Cistercian monasteries in Ireland over the decades and never once did any monk proposition me or move close to me. Ever. You and I are almost the same age…….My 2 abusers were non clerics in the 60’s…!! Horrible memories. I had huge involvement in our home parish for years and met many clerics. Not one of them in all my years ever behaved inappropriately. Ever. I know of no priest or religious who served and worked in my home parish to ever have abused or behave improperly. I was stalked at 14/15 years of age by horrible ugly abusers. A Dominican priest saved and redeemed me. We were brought to confession every week by my parents and I expressed to this priest that “I” had done a “bad” thing. He was my saviour. He assured me I was the victim. A wonderful confessor from thereon. Any abuse is a deeply painful reality.

Your defensive mindset indicates that you are one of the patsies set up to do exactly what you are doing now. That’s why you never came across any church abuse. Abusers require people who don’t see it as well as victims, and cults also require naive victims.

9.28: Utterly cynical of you and so disingenuous. That was my personal experience in monasteries and in my home parish. That isn’t to say I never saw abuse and stood by. Wrong. In my first parish in the late 70’s early 80’s, I, in my learned lessons and vigilance was responsible for the removal of and subsequent imprisonment of two men for their sexual abuse. Add soon as my suspicions were correct, I acted swiftly. I most assuredly am not, nor ever was a naive person. I could present to you cases where I prevented abuse happening and where I discovered huge financial corruption in 2 school settings….

It most certainly could happen today, that monks, and their lay cronies, could ‘disappear’ victims and accusers.
I haven’t a scintilla of doubt that among the ‘disappeared’ are young children raped by monks and priests.
It is only a matter of time before evidence for this is made public; I believe it already exists, but is being held in reserve.

I agree with everything you say, as that was my experience too in those wonderful times. This Chris article say’s he hasn’t a scintilla of doubt about children abused by clergy. Can I ask what era have you lived through? I’d be more worried about what’s happening today than what to me were the good oul days.

The old people were genuinely terrified of priests and bishops and truly believed that they cursed those who crossed them. Very few dared to question them until they became more openly brazen and the cat fell shrieking out of the bag. Her name was Annie Murphy the Irish American mother of a son with Bishop Eamon Casey, Bishop of Galway & later Kerry, shipped to Ecuadorian missions when scandal broke. Miss Murphy wrote a book about their affair and turned to the international media when Bishop Casey ceased to provide for their young son. When Pope John Paul II visited Ireland in 1979, Bishop Casey and Daddy to 3 known kids Fr Michael Cleary took centre stage with their Pope. Since then things have gone from bad to worse, but Guess What, ye ain’t heard nothing yet.

Joe McGuigan was a well liked and respected Priest before his untimely demise from grace. But to install him in a Pp role would be totally scandalous and an incorrect move by Bishop Treanor. A better choice would be to have him step in to parishes to help out when priests are on holiday. However, he is utterly sex mad and his kind of sex is wreckelss, risky and disgusting. I wouldn’t let him baptise any child of mine with them hands.

This story is truly upsetting. That there are so many people covering this monks tracks. It is sadly not unique. There is a D&C current serving Priest who has killed 2 people and got away with it. We all know who he is but we are bound to be silent. Well after the demonstration at the weekend I hope someone finds their voice and sinks this murderous treacherous Priest.

Pat, I know you felt repressed, fearful and uncertain about many things. We all did back in the 50’s/60’s/70’s: I did but I remember having to resist the advances of a neighbour and one cleric whom I was helping in his rehab programme while a student at 18 years of age. When he tried to bribe me for sex by threatening suicide, I went straight to director of the programme to report his behaviour. I never worked with him again nor had any contact despite his many attempts to do so. Perhaps I was strong within but any person about whom I had suspicions in my early days of ministry – and there were three such cases – I reported to my bishop and to an Gardai. I stayed with the young person and his family and got all relevant counselling for him. The abuser was removed instantly from any church presence but continued to have access to the football club. They were informed by me as to what happened. Subsequently the abuser was caught…My early teenage experiences made me acutely aware of the deviousness of abusers. I’ve had great encounters with many priests and religious all my childhood and teenage years: all very positive (except for one alcoholic priest) and at boarding school for 3 years I only experienced kindness from the De La Salle Brothers….

The downland of Pleasure Hill in Monasterboice is just that, where the monks from the monastery went if they were heterosexual …..a place of heterosexual sex. Homosexual sex was on site. Funerals Requiem Masses are all free in the RCC and going forward the Funeral Ministry Teams can do the commital at the graveside or at the crematorium no need for a Priest and some funeral directors are do the prayers at the crematorium and graveside.

I beg to differ. The “infamous” sexually abusive cesspit, with it’s Archbishop’s sex abuse coverups so clearly exposed by the IICSA, the Roman Catholic Archdioceses of Birmingham (England) has a charge of £600 towards the use of ta Roman Catholic church facility and the priest for a funeral, in this Archdioceses, all money creamed off in this way goes to the Archdioceses, NOT to the officiating priest.
I have today 15/08/22 checked this up to date information with Heart of England Co-op Funerals.
I assured the said funeral directors, I will be using their services again when the inevitable arrives, however, never again the services of the Roman Catholic Archdioceses of Birmingham, if prayer are requested by family or the deceased wishes are known, prayers of course, will be offered by the family itself.

I have checked, again with the Heart of England Co-op Funerals what the Anglican church locally charge for a funeral service, the Roman Catholic which is five minutes walk from the Anglican church, and of a similar size charges £600. Apparently Church of England charges can vary, my local Anglican church which is quite large, and, is in the Diocese of Coventry.
Church of England charges £206-oop.
£112 goes to the Church of England dioceses Coventry,
the remainder goes to the Anglican church where the funeral service is/was held.

Thankfully I do very few funerals. On occasion an undertaker has given me £ 60.

Most the funerals I do are of parishioners or friends and I ge really am offered nothing.

I am perfectly comfortable with that.

Pat, explain, please, since this blog is entirely about exposing moral corruption in the Church, including the behaviour of those members (clerical and lay) who helped to cover it up by remaining silent when they ought to have had the moral courage to speak out.

Frank, whoever he is, acts to protect the Cistercians; he is loyal to them. According to the poster at 11.25. Good, but not if it involves betraying others, especially children. Is this really so difficult to understand?

Remember our ultimate loyalty must be to Christ through conscience, not to any priest, bishop, pope, magisterium. Or to any religious order that provides us with employment.

Does Frank know of child abuse by the Cistercians? Or abuse of adults? These are just examples of what Frank might know. If he does, but is keeping silent to protect the Cistercians (and his job?), then he is no different from any other facilitator/enabler of child sexual abuse in the Church.

You may be old enough to remember when nobody thought a priest could abuse a child but any naivety of what priests and monks can get up to has been destroyed.
The monasteries in England which have had child abuse scandals: Ealing, Ampleforth, Buckfast, Downside, Belmont, Cockfosters.
The monasteries in England where there have been dodgy sexual encounters between monks and adults: Worth, Douai, Farnborough, Ampleforth.
Both Ealing and Buckfast elected as abbot a man subsequently convicted of child abuse.
Of course there may be ones I’ve missed.
We KNOW that our previous naivety about these supposed men of God was misplaced so yes, it’s relevant, and you can assume all sorts is going on. Because if they turn a blind eye to child abuse then obviously anything else is okay as well.

Of the Cistercians I haven’t heard anything about Mount St Bernard but the record of Caldey (in Wales so technically outside your question) is public.
Fort Augustus (again in Scotland) was used as a paedophile haven by the EBC and has had its own report which doesn’t make for easy reading.

11.11 Very historical in Irish Church History. Do you know that to get to be president of the USA, you have to have had orchestrated at least three murders ? Depending on your age but definitely after 28, there are things you know that have happened to others that YOU and every human have done nothing about: injurious , violent, deadly even and all the sliding scales between those 3. What a pack of moralising cowards on this Blog, calling on others to be heroes and they don’t even post their names. Thank you – a very interesting story. So essentially he was so fed up with the church’s toleration of abuse that he left. So, when this happens, especially with a middle-aged priest, what happens about things like pensions? If I was to leave my job at 55, having worked for a company for 30 years, I would have a significant deferred pension, which I could draw then or later. Do priests get this? If not then is the default to hang on in there and continue to get some support, while keeping quiet?
