“PAT – WHAT WILL BE YOUR “LEGACY”?

People often ask me what my “legacy” will be.

Some even suggest or worry that this blog will be my legacy – and that it will not be a good legacy

But even the most famous of people are eventually forgotten or not talked about very much.

And, as Christians, should we not be more worried about our Judgement than our legacy?

At the same time I do understand that we do leave our mark on the world.

In the old days when it was normal to leave your empty milk bottles on the doorstep at night I always marvelled at the little silver trails left behind by the garden slugs.

And I’ve often thought and said:

“If the humble slug leaves its mark on the world then so should we”.

I have always loved Wordsworth’s lovely words:

“The greatest part of a good man’s life are his little, unremembered acts of kindness and of love”.

This comforts me because no matter what faults I have, and I have very many, I have always being very careful to do little acts of kindness and love.

And sometimes people remind me of something I did for them 30 years ago – something I have completely forgotten about – and say a little prayer that when God is finished totting up all my sins – he may go on to take note of the good I did.

Legacy – I think there are probably two aspects – what others think of you after you have gone – and what you think you have achieved with your life yourself.

OTHERS

I think we make a great mistake if we live our lives to please others.

People are so fickle. One day they will love you and the next they will hate you

So I think the best way to live your life is to think, speak and act as you would if Jesus Himself was there and watching you intently

The simple but also profound catch cry- WWJD – What Would Jesus do – is a very good guide for us Christians.

But I suppose people could make that very subjective.

Some people believe that Jesus always sends gay people to hell.

Others, like me, believe Jesus loves gay people as much as he loves all others.

I regard myself as having an enlightened and educated conscience.

And so I try and act in accordance with that.

When I’m gone some will pop a bottle of champagne 🍾.

Others will remember me kindly.

And maybe Lin-Manuel Miranda is right?

WHAT I THINK

There are very few Nelson Mandela’s or Martin Luther King”s in the world.

Most of us leave a small mark in a small place, of any mark at all.

I count my blessings:

I have lived till three score and ten when three of my younger siblings have perished.

I have kept my Christian faith – by God’s grace.

I’ve stayed loyal to the priesthood for 46 years.

I’ve stood by my principles and convictions in the face of often fierce opposition.

I have tried to do all the good I could have done.

I sincerely regret all the mistakes I’ve made and all the sins I have committed.

I am unbelievably grateful to be still alive, still relatively healthy and still enjoying my vocation to love God and serve people.

Enemies will always see your legacy differently from your friends.

The Oratory – and I – already have a grave with a headstone on it.

There is already a quote on it which says:

Conscience is the aboriginal vicar of Christ”.

You could have a worse epitaph and legacy than:

“He followed his enlightened and educated conscience”.

Has anyone told Malachy? He is still behaving like an Abbot! I have been told by a housemaster in the college that he has sent a 4 page letter to the school management about his expectations for the next academic year. The principal has been complaining about him to teachers and how he interfered in the timetabling of classes. He is still directing the board of governors about finances and fees. Malachy likes to be in charge, he will not surrender easily. The ‘resignation’ is a joke. Do not fool yourself.

In spite of the above it is good news to hear that Malachy Thompson has resigned as superior of Roscrea.

He was a close ally of Richard Purcell.

It looks to me as if the new Abbot General and his council have finally decided to clean out the disgraced Irish Cistercian stable.

We will watch the progress carefully.

We are all forgotten in a 100 years or less – politicians, celebrities and clergy are hear today gone tomorrow.

10.15: Sir, it’s true as you must well know, the “least” of God’s people will be the favoured: the ones who live the Beatitudes, the ones who truly have a place for God in their hearts . Thank God I meet them in my work and they inspire greatly. It is these men and women – God’s saints – who deserve our admiration and praise. Their legacy is amazing, more than most clerics, including that of any bishop!! Archbishop Romero is my hero. We will all be forgotten in time but what matters is God’s mercy, love and kindness and hopefully we live lives worthy of such gracious mercy.

It is astonishing that you would print such a blog piece that fails to recognise the cruelty, nastiness and spitefulness that characterises so much of what you do. You truly are spiritually blind and you have set out to destroy people- often innocent people- due to your vendetta against the RCC. You have used innocent people as weapons and have caused such damage and hurt- not only to these people but their families. You have absolutely no humility and are a vicious and cruel person. It’s a bit difficult to know what to call it because the Catholic church is holy and the RCC isn’t. If you say Church of Rome that is of course what it is, but like Romanist or Romish church it sounds too Protestant.

Pat, you’ll have left a reasonably good legacy as I believe all of who try our best to live good, human, decent and Christian lives, where appropriate, pleasing to God, will do. As priests we have a particular ministry. Some have distorted, degraded and destroyed the ideal of priesthood because of great spiritual and moral failures and devious, evil corruption. I wouldn’t even begin to imagine my legacy, for to do so might appear vain, presumptuous and arrogant. I leave all such concerns to others. What gives me a sense of fulfilment are the moments when people express gratitude for kindness shown to them in a myriad of different situations, 15/30/ 35 years ago or today or yesterday or a month ago. I reflect on the many encounters Jesus had with so many and how he “changed” people for the better, always giving them their dignity in the eyes of God, their self worth and new beginnings. While Jesus Christ is our only template – he alone – I haven’t always lived the true ideal but HE is our model. While I believe you were and are too condemnatory and harsh at times and often merciless but you have unearthed hidden scandals, sought the truth, stood by victims and survivors and made life very uncomfortable for many (in the right way). You reached the turning point at a junction of your life and became an uncompromising voice for the many who are hurt, excluded and marginalised. You have clearly expressed the thoughts of many clerics at times giving us food for thought and challenging us hugely. While I’ve disagreed with you in your style and approach, which at times has been most uncharitable and un-Christ like, unnecessarily so at times, in essence, to paraphrase Shakespeare: “..you’ll have done the Church and society much good.. ” And life goes on…

I surely write from ignorance of what you surely have already posted, but recording some sermons, perhaps posting on social media, can make for a fine legacy. The efforts for victims is surely overwhelmingly to your credit, and that some post unsuitable comments does not obviate that. Princess Alice of Greece and Denmark, for me, has left a legacy to inspire faith and belief that will always endure. Everything about this woman and her story speaks of God. She suffered more than Jesus Christ in her life and had to go on living, no death and resurrection for her within a week. People like her live all over the world quietly and never make the news. Perhaps Reader, even your own mother or father, maybe particularly your child in the Great Ormond or the Children’s Hospital in Dublin. Princess Alice lived a wonderful life to inspire anyone who takes the trouble to delve into her story. That is legacy.

It’s off topic here but I was just listening to the Archbishop of Dublin , Dermot Farrell on the Clare Byrne show yesterday an was mightily impressed. What a breath of fresh air. An absolute mine of common sense and decent , down to earth
, inclusive Catholicism. I suppose you could expect nothing less from a Westmeath man. Some change from the previous occupant who would have been more suited to being an Irish Times columnist or RTE type where he could spend everyday bashing the Catholic church.

I beg to differ. Archbishop Farrell came across as childish with his responses. He kept referring to “doctrine” as his answer to everything. You can tell she grew tired of his inability to enter in to the discussion.
She brings up the LGBTQ community and his response was talk about it being illegal, she then pushed him on it puts the blame on the Church for it’s role to which he started to babble about victorian law.
It was clear he was completely out of touch as she abruptly ended the interview. Diarmuid Martin for all his faults engaged with the questions. If Dermot Farrells only response to everything is “well that’s just how it is” then there is no hope for an “inclusive” Church in Dublin.

2040 circa: Redemptorists Ireland membership will have 5 priests based in Dundalk. Mount Saint Alphonsus, Limerick will be developed as a hotel called the Mount with an adjoining nite club called Alfie’s. Clonard monastery will be sold and converted into apartments, the church will be preserved as a centre of reconciliation. Why are the Five Guys under 50 staying to manage real estate? Surely the outgoing provincial was the equaliser with his associates, the academic, the accountant and the administrator!

You and I have been friends for many years and I am not announce homophobic as you know, but public displays of affection from any sexuality should be outlawed – I just witnessed two men embrace each other with a hug and a snog outside McDonald’s this morning and it turned my stomach as I hadn’t even had breakfast yet.

I don’t regard myself as homophobic either, 9.30 am. I have consistently and repeatedly spoken out, on this blog and elsewhere, in defence of LGBT equality. And yet, it would be dishonest of me to deny that the sight of two men snogging makes my skin crawl. Sorry, but there it is. The unvarnished truth. It’s odd, then, that the same from two lesbians seems to have the opposite effect.

Do you know, as a gay man, I have every sympathy with you and your feelings of discomfort when you see two men kissing. I understand it. I feel exactly the same when I see a man and a woman kissing simply because that is not “normal” for me. But then I think what is behind it: love, imperfect, flawed, possibly not lifelong, but still something special in a world that’s full of so much misery, sadness and kindness. For me, whatever my personal discomfort, that’s something to support and celebrate.

I’m sure neither contributor today is homophobic & dialogue between people of different experiences is vital.

However, if a contributor here were to say that I’m wrong to be uncomfortable with seeing a man and woman kissing because that’s “normal” and two people of the same gender kissing isn’t, that would be less defensible.

I don’t think I’ve been as clear as I might be but it’s something I’ve often thought, even since the infamous EastEnders kiss in the 1980s. I’m happy to try and share that thought this evening in the hope that people will show the same gentleness and tolerance to my way of thinking and my very mundane 30+ year long relationship with my husband as I show to others.

I think that my life can be summed up in Ernest Hemingway’s mighty quote:

I have been “broken” but not destroyed. I am a bit like the horse that needs to be “broken” in order to function. But such a horse retains its indomitable spirit to the point where the rider knows not to push it past a certain point. Otherwise the horse’s primal spirit bursts forth and then it is the rider who will be in trouble.
And there is a very important distinction between been “broken” and “destroyed”.
Our brokeness is actually a great strength. It glues us to the broken Christ and also creates within us a great compassion for broken others.
There’s an awful lot to be said for life’s “cracked cups”.

Pat at 1.22, I believe that, like much else in the Gospel, the biblical authors sought to make a ‘biography’ of Jesus that would fit the messianic prophecies in the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible); this includes Jesus’ Bethlehem birth, to harmonise, and make credible and fulfilled, prophecy that the Messiah would be of King David’s royal lineage.
Remember there were others, contemporaneous with Jesus or preceding him, who claimed to be the foretold Messiah.
The biblical authors had to make a convincing case that their guy, Yeshua (a Hebrew word meaning ‘salvation and from which the name ‘Jesus’ is derived) was the right one. Seems they succeeded, at least for the most part.

Pat, I have long been an admirer of you and love your sense of humour and way with words and had the pleasure of meeting you once. Pat, I’m one of you cleansed leppers who never came back to say thanks until now. After being released from psychiatric care and no one including my family would take me in, you did. For now, wondering about your legacy maybe premature, but I think you will be remembered for your outspokenness on Church abuses of all kinds, corruption and major moral and criminal behaviour. They’ve been discussed frequently and you’ve challenged the status quo among many clerics. You make us worried and cause us to reflect more deeply about the devious machinations within the Church. I hope in these years of your life that you may reconcile with those from whom you have been estranged or hurt through this blog, just for your own inner peace. Pat, I wish you God’s blessings despite disagreeing with yiu on many issues. Have you been inspired by Pope Francis who hinted that he “may” retire due to health issues and the enormous workload he endures!! I regret that Bill M. who stated categorically that he was gone from the blog is commandeering it once again with disconnected narratives with their usual allegations, unfairness and nasty judgments: over 20 today. Bill ought to be more circumspect and discern when it’s appropriate not to pontificate so much. This should have been your day for positive appreciation of your ministry, not for Bill’s diaries. In truth we will never know your legacy. The Church is under siege and occupation of Satan. That is the only way to explain the behaviour of some priests and many bishops. I can only hope that +Pat has been been a voice that cries in the wilderness, preventing and curtailing the plans of Satan. Some of those not ordained, or removed from ministry, because Pat ultimately shamed bishops into acting correctly, we’re surely destined to do far worse if they remained in ministry. But we can never know what those alternate realities would have been without +Pat.

Pat I think your legacy will be quite significant. Your efforts with the people of the Falls Road and the hunger strikers will never be forgotten -that’s a given. Unlike most smoked salmon RCC clerics you went in and did what Jesus said we should do -help the poor, the oppressed and the desperate. Your criticism of your peers and boss led to your exile and you suffered for what you did -which was the right thing. By any measure your account balance in Heaven is very much in the black while most of your foes down the years are heading straight to Old Nick when their day comes.
The blog is a credit to you. It exposes so much wrong doing and is by turns tragic, heartbreaking but at times absolutely hilarious. You are also really the only person in Ireland trying to hold these beasts to account now and you have been very successful – you have made it front and center that the RCC are literally a threat to public health and financial well being.
If you leave the world a better place than you found it then you have done well and you have certainly done this. But dont talk about legacies -you arent done yet and could have 30 more years of blogging ahead.
