“PAT – WHAT WILL BE YOUR “LEGACY”?

RECENT PIC
CONSECRATION PIC 1998

People often ask me what my “legacy” will be.

Some even suggest or worry that this blog will be my legacy – and that it will not be a good legacy

But even the most famous of people are eventually forgotten or not talked about very much.

And, as Christians, should we not be more worried about our Judgement than our legacy?

At the same time I do understand that we do leave our mark on the world.

In the old days when it was normal to leave your empty milk bottles on the doorstep at night I always marvelled at the little silver trails left behind by the garden slugs.

And I’ve often thought and said:

“If the humble slug leaves its mark on the world then so should we”.

I have always loved Wordsworth’s lovely words:

“The greatest part of a good man’s life are his little, unremembered acts of kindness and of love”.

This comforts me because no matter what faults I have, and I have very many, I have always being very careful to do little acts of kindness and love.

And sometimes people remind me of something I did for them 30 years ago – something I have completely forgotten about – and say a little prayer that when God is finished totting up all my sins – he may go on to take note of the good I did.

Legacy – I think there are probably two aspects – what others think of you after you have gone – and what you think you have achieved with your life yourself.

OTHERS

I think we make a great mistake if we live our lives to please others.

People are so fickle. One day they will love you and the next they will hate you

So I think the best way to live your life is to think, speak and act as you would if Jesus Himself was there and watching you intently

The simple but also profound catch cry- WWJD – What Would Jesus do – is a very good guide for us Christians.

But I suppose people could make that very subjective.

Some people believe that Jesus always sends gay people to hell.

Others, like me, believe Jesus loves gay people as much as he loves all others.

I regard myself as having an enlightened and educated conscience.

And so I try and act in accordance with that.

When I’m gone some will pop a bottle of champagne 🍾.

Others will remember me kindly.

And maybe Lin-Manuel Miranda is right?

WHAT I THINK

There are very few Nelson Mandela’s or Martin Luther King”s in the world.

Most of us leave a small mark in a small place, of any mark at all.

I count my blessings:

I have lived till three score and ten when three of my younger siblings have perished.

I have kept my Christian faith – by God’s grace.

I’ve stayed loyal to the priesthood for 46 years.

I’ve stood by my principles and convictions in the face of often fierce opposition.

I have tried to do all the good I could have done.

I sincerely regret all the mistakes I’ve made and all the sins I have committed.

I am unbelievably grateful to be still alive, still relatively healthy and still enjoying my vocation to love God and serve people.

Enemies will always see your legacy differently from your friends.

The Oratory – and I – already have a grave with a headstone on it.

There is already a quote on it which says:

Conscience is the aboriginal vicar of Christ”.

You could have a worse epitaph and legacy than:

He followed his enlightened and educated conscience”.

MALACHY THOMPSON NO LONGER SUPERIOR OF ROSCREA CISTERCIANS.

MALACHY THOMPSON

COMMENT ON YESTERDAY’S BLOG

Has anyone told Malachy? He is still behaving like an Abbot! I have been told by a housemaster in the college that he has sent a 4 page letter to the school management about his expectations for the next academic year. The principal has been complaining about him to teachers and how he interfered in the timetabling of classes. He is still directing the board of governors about finances and fees. Malachy likes to be in charge, he will not surrender easily. The ‘resignation’ is a joke. Do not fool yourself.

In spite of the above it is good news to hear that Malachy Thompson has resigned as superior of Roscrea.

He was a close ally of Richard Purcell.

It looks to me as if the new Abbot General and his council have finally decided to clean out the disgraced Irish Cistercian stable.

We will watch the progress carefully.

Vanity vanity all is vanity – says the sage.

Wise words indeed – we are dust and to the dust we return.

We are all forgotten in a 100 years or less – politicians, celebrities and clergy are hear today gone tomorrow.

Nelson Mandela was a communist atheist and Martin Luther King a serial adulterer – great men? Probably but flawed and in time lost to history.

Are you OK bishop Pat? I hope your blog continues after your dead and gone. Succession planning? Will there ever be another Pat?

10.15: Sir, it’s true as you must well know, the “least” of God’s people will be the favoured: the ones who live the Beatitudes, the ones who truly have a place for God in their hearts . Thank God I meet them in my work and they inspire greatly. It is these men and women – God’s saints – who deserve our admiration and praise. Their legacy is amazing, more than most clerics, including that of any bishop!! Archbishop Romero is my hero. We will all be forgotten in time but what matters is God’s mercy, love and kindness and hopefully we live lives worthy of such gracious mercy.

Pat, I know you won’t print this but you will see it nonetheless. It is astonishing that you would print such a blog piece that fails to recognise the cruelty, nastiness and spitefulness that characterises so much of what you do. You truly are spiritually blind and you have set out to destroy people- often innocent people- due to your vendetta against the RCC. You have used innocent people as weapons and have caused such damage and hurt- not only to these people but their families. You have absolutely no humility and are a vicious and cruel person. May God have mercy on you- much more than you have had on other people.

Name them, he innocent and destroyed ? For example, there is little I don’t know about Martin Mc Alinden ( he and Mc Areavey had a complicated “friendship” Mc Arevey pursued him), I have never and will never reveal it in his case, but the clamour to his defence here was a nonsense, not one untruth published about him, Pat just did not have the half of it. Pat, you’ll have left a reasonably good legacy as I believe all of who try our best to live good, human, decent and Christian lives, where appropriate, pleasing to God, will do. As priests we have a particular ministry. Some have distorted, degraded and destroyed the ideal of priesthood because of great spiritual and moral failures and devious, evil corruption. I wouldn’t even begin to imagine my legacy, for to do so might appear vain, presumptuous and arrogant. I leave all such concerns to others. What gives me a sense of fulfilment are the moments when people express gratitude for kindness shown to them in a myriad of different situations, 15/30/ 35 years ago or today or yesterday or a month ago. I reflect on the many encounters Jesus had with so many and how he “changed” people for the better, always giving them their dignity in the eyes of God, their self worth and new beginnings. While Jesus Christ is our only template – he alone – I haven’t always lived the true ideal but HE is our model. While I believe you were and are too condemnatory and harsh at times and often merciless but you have unearthed hidden scandals, sought the truth, stood by victims and survivors and made life very uncomfortable for many (in the right way). You reached the turning point at a junction of your life and became an uncompromising voice for the many who are hurt, excluded and marginalised. You have clearly expressed the thoughts of many clerics at times giving us food for thought and challenging us hugely. While I’ve disagreed with you in your style and approach, which at times has been most uncharitable and un-Christ like, unnecessarily so at times, in essence, to paraphrase Shakespeare: “..you’ll have done the Church and society much good.. ” And life goes on…

It’s off topic here but I was just listening to the Archbishop of Dublin , Dermot Farrell on the Clare Byrne show yesterday an was mightily impressed. What a breath of fresh air. An absolute mine of common sense and decent , down to earth

I beg to differ. Archbishop Farrell came across as childish with his responses. He kept referring to “doctrine” as his answer to everything. You can tell she grew tired of his inability to enter in to the discussion.
She brings up the LGBTQ community and his response was talk about it being illegal, she then pushed him on it puts the blame on the Church for it’s role to which he started to babble about victorian law.
It was clear he was completely out of touch as she abruptly ended the interview. Diarmuid Martin for all his faults engaged with the questions. If Dermot Farrells only response to everything is “well that’s just how it is” then there is no hope for an “inclusive” Church in Dublin.

‘Because of tradition’? An old chestnut, that one.

It was traditional, too, literally for centuries, moral approval of capital punishment. Where has that tradition gone? Well, actually, just that. Gone, since January 2018.

To argue from tradition alone is a logical fallacy, since tradition itself witnesses to nothing except the power of those who established it, and the interests of those who benefit from it.

Pat. You are a thorn in the side of the bishops and a pain in the arse for the hierarchy.
What is most damaging is the drip drip effect and the fact that you receive and expose leaks from insiders which has them all caught like rabbits in headlights.
The bishops have obviously taken the ‘no comment’ or ‘ostrich approach’ – putting their heads in the sands. It’s not working !!
People now can read all about the corruption and abuse of power, money and people ( children included).
It’s easy to see the bitchiness of clergy settling scores with each other and the trolls in full swing.
I have no doubt that during COVID your readership will have increased as many more former followers realised they were being taken for a ride by the clergy caste.
I’m looking at this whole blog and it’s effects from a PR professional’s eye and yes, it’s very damaging.
You have made laughing stocks of bishops and forced abbots to resign etc. this blog has shown that for miscreant clergy there is no hiding place.
This blog is not only a clear example of the power of social media but it exposes just how inept the bishops and their cohorts are when their regime and all their shenanigans are exposed to public scrutiny.

Do you know, as a gay man, I have every sympathy with you and your feelings of discomfort when you see two men kissing. I understand it. I feel exactly the same when I see a man and a woman kissing simply because that is not “normal” for me. But then I think what is behind it: love, imperfect, flawed, possibly not lifelong, but still something special in a world that’s full of so much misery, sadness and kindness. For me, whatever my personal discomfort, that’s something to support and celebrate.

I’m sure neither contributor today is homophobic & dialogue between people of different experiences is vital.

However, if a contributor here were to say that I’m wrong to be uncomfortable with seeing a man and woman kissing because that’s “normal” and two people of the same gender kissing isn’t, that would be less defensible.

I don’t think I’ve been as clear as I might be but it’s something I’ve often thought, even since the infamous EastEnders kiss in the 1980s. I’m happy to try and share that thought this evening in the hope that people will show the same gentleness and tolerance to my way of thinking and my very mundane 30+ year long relationship with my husband as I show to others.

+ Pat's blog is like an annual performance appraisal for clergy and bishops....no bad thing !says:

I think + Pat and this blog provide one invaluable service. They keep bishops and clergy on their toes, and looking over their shoulders. For too long bishops and clergy have been able to proceed unhindered and without any accountability. The suckered us in to believing that they were as pure as the driven snow and we had not right to ask questions. Now they have to think about what will appear on this blog, because + Pat is able to glean all kinds of uncomfortable information about them and their activities and the things that they get up to that they would like to keep quiet. That is healthy for us, and for them as well, because it encourages them to live the lives that they profess that they are vowed to live. It’s a sort of annual performance appraisal process for bishops and clergy. The rest of us in the world of work have to go through that and have our performance critiqued, in the hope that it will lead us on to better things. Well, + Pat, you encourage bishops and clergy to clean up their act and live lives that are worthy of their calling. No bad thing !

I think your legacy is invisible in a sense because it is in anyone who has been strengthened by you not to believe the cult, to walk away, to speak up.
It’s in everyone who has known as a result of reading this blog that they’ve been gaslighted.
Who has stopped going to mass.
Who has stopped giving money.
Who has persuaded their granny not to leave money in their will.
Who hasn’t killed themselves.
Who has decided not to pursue a ‘vocation’.
Who has sent their kids to another school.
We’ll never hear about them but I’m sure there are people who have made that call to police or a solicitor, as a result of reading this blog.

Good morning Pat,
Glad to know that you are in good health.
This blog piece you wrote on the occasion of your 45th ordination anniversary is one of my favourites. Blessings, Karen
I think that my life can be summed up in Ernest Hemingway’s mighty quote:
“The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially”.
I have been “broken” but not destroyed. I am a bit like the horse that needs to be “broken” in order to function. But such a horse retains its indomitable spirit to the point where the rider knows not to push it past a certain point. Otherwise the horse’s primal spirit bursts forth and then it is the rider who will be in trouble.
And there is a very important distinction between been “broken” and “destroyed”.
Our brokeness is actually a great strength. It glues us to the broken Christ and also creates within us a great compassion for broken others.
There’s an awful lot to be said for life’s “cracked cups”.

FYI – I will not accept the Irish Episcopal Council’s attempts to change historical facts in educational materials designed for Catholic ethos primary schools. My children are Irish & Israeli citizens and will not be taught in 2nd class that Jesus was born in Palestine. A complete and utter distortion of historical facts. Hadrian renamed the provinces in 135 CE in order to obliterate the Jewish identity and added insult to injury by naming it after the kingdom of Israel’s enemies, the Philistines. Jesus is a Jew born in Bethlehem, Judah. Full stop. https://twitter.com/karenievers/status/1559847742901452801?s=21&t=Qm4VU9hbazgh5jcsFxw91A

Right! I’ve had enough!! Time to break my scholarly silence on this delicate, testy subject.
Jesus was, actually, the son of Joseph and Mary, BIOLOGICALLY. There was no pneumatological intervention in Jesus’s conception; no supernatural consumation.
There was no virgin birth; no resurrection. Jesus was flesh and blood, exclusively. A good man, with moral authority granted, but a man alone, and apart from other men. A prophet extraordinaire.
There is a bloodline.

Pat at 1.22, I believe that, like much else in the Gospel, the biblical authors sought to make a ‘biography’ of Jesus that would fit the messianic prophecies in the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible); this includes Jesus’ Bethlehem birth, to harmonise, and make credible and fulfilled, prophecy that the Messiah would be of King David’s royal lineage.
Remember there were others, contemporaneous with Jesus or preceding him, who claimed to be the foretold Messiah.
The biblical authors had to make a convincing case that their guy, Yeshua (a Hebrew word meaning ‘salvation and from which the name ‘Jesus’ is derived) was the right one. Seems they succeeded, at least for the most part.

12.02 Truth. I will be taking action Ruby. Replacement theology is repugnant to me. “Replacement Theology essentially claims that the Jewish people were the chosen people of God and that due to their rejection of the Christ they have been replaced as God’s chosen people by the Church. This replacement is then taken to mean that the Jewish people have been rejected or “accursed” by God for their rejection of the Gospel.
In Nostra Aetate the Church explicitly rejects replacement theology:
Nevertheless, God holds the Jews most dear for the sake of their Fathers; He does not repent of the gifts He makes or of the calls He issues. . . (4)”

Actually, the term ‘Palestine’ appears in texts as early as the fifth century B.C., in the ‘Histories of Herodotus’. Originally, it named only a small, southern region of a territory known as Canaan, but, after Herodotus, it was, through common usage, applied to the entire area.

Canaan was, tribally, inhabited by the Israelites, the Canaanites, Canaanite-Phoenicians, and the Philistines. It is entirely correct, in one (albeit sharply disputed) historical sense, to describe Jesus as a ‘Palestinian Jew’, since Bethlehem, the place of Jesus’ birth in the Gospel, would have been in the territory previously known as Palestine.

Hadrian did not rename the territory as such: he simply revived an ancient name for it in retaliation for Jewish revolt in the second century A.D.

Like

3.36 Actually you are leaving out some very important information: “When Herodotus in the fifth century B.C.E. mentions Palestine he refers only to the coastal area, so called because it had been inhabited by the Philistines; or he is speaking loosely, since the only part of the area that he had visited was apparently along the coast. During the Persian and Ptolemaic periods, the entire area between the Euphrates and the Mediterranean from Cilicia to Egypt is called Coele-Syria. The term Judaea, as used by such writers as Hecataeus of Abdera, Clearchus of Soli, and even the anti-Jewish Manetho in the early third century B.C.E. refers to that part of the area inhabited predominantly by Jews. That the official term for this region is Judaea may be seen from military diplomas and other inscriptions, as well as from coins, prior to the time of Hadrian. It is so designated in the official letter of the Emperor Claudius to the Alexandrians in the first century, as well as by such writers as Plutarch, Tacitus, and Suetonius at the beginning of the second century. Moreover, writers on geography in the first century clearly differentiate Judaea from Palestine. Even vicious anti-Jewish writers, such as Apion, Chaeremon, and Seneca in the first century, generally do not use the term Palestine. Jewish writers, notably Philo and Josephus, with few exceptions refer to the land as Judaea, reserving the name Palestine for the coastal area occupied by the Philistines. It is only centuries later, in perhaps the fifth century, that we find the name Palestine in a rabbinic work. Occurrences of the adjective Palestinian in such poets as Tibullus, Ovid, and Statius are due to metrical considerations; Palestinian as a noun does not occur in all antiquity. Coins of Hadrian issued before the Bar Kochba rebellion in 132 C.E. refer to Judaea; within a few years after the rebellion the name of Judaea was officially changed to Palestine, the aim being to obliterate the Jewish character of the land, with the name of the nearest tribe being applied to the entire area. Yet, even after the name was officially changed, some inscriptions, as well as such literary figures as Galen and Celsus in the second century, Dio Cassius and Origen in the third century, and Eusebius and Jerome in the fourth century, still refer to Judaea.“ (Feldman, 1990, Hebrew Union College Press)

As interesting as is the information you provided, it does not refute anything in my post at 3.36, much less my point that one may, quite reasonably, describe Jesus as a ‘Palestinian Jew’.
As you can tell from that post, I knew that Herodotus had named as ‘Palestine’ only a small, southern region of Canaan; I did not state otherwise.
Before Jesus’ birth, the territory previously known as ‘Canaan’ had, through common usage of the name, become known as ‘Palestine’. So, ‘Palestine’, by this time, no longer named only that small, southern region of the territory.
I did not deny that the territory was not otherwise named at the time of Jesus’ birth.

Bishop Pat’s blog fulfils a crucial role in holding the RCC to account and provides essential scrutiny. The RCC has high expectations of its clergy, and those who profess to be celibate should expect to be called out if they don’t keep their promises. No press organisation is interested in a philandering priest or one caught cottaging, or even an Abbott buggering a priest on the monastic kitchen table, or priests and seminarians having sex on altars. Without this blog, the individuals would still be deceiving us all.

Pat, I have long been an admirer of you and love your sense of humour and way with words and had the pleasure of meeting you once. The blog performs a task that shouldn’t be needed, ie holding the RC bishops and superiors to account and forcing them to make the difficult personnel decisions they would otherwise avoid doing.
Sadly, it has taken court cases, media exposure, diocesan bankruptcies ans state inquiries to force them to partially clean up their act. They cannot or won’t take action unless forced to.
Partially cleaning up Maynooth, or at least making them less brazen, is a great achievement and will have lasting benefit. Many harmful ordinations have been avoided though some still got through the loose Maynooth net.
Well done, Pat, they tried to drive you into the ground, but didn’t.
Finally, those who assess you only based on the blog have no idea how kind, gentle and funny you are in real life. The RCC missed many opportunities when it gave you the boit.

You are also really the only person in Ireland trying to hold these beasts to account now and you have been very successful – you have made it front and center that the RCC are literally a threat to public health and financial well being.
If you leave the world a better place than you found it then you have done well and you have certainly done this. But dont talk about legacies -you arent done yet and could have 30 more years of blogging ahead.
