BILL MULVIHILL PUBLISHES CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN HIMSELF AND EAMON MARTIN.

BILL
EAMON

PAT SAYS

Publishing this correspondence is important because the correspondence from bishops, and between bishops and priests rarely sees the light of day.

Most priests would be afraid to publish their bishops letters to them because it would lead to punishment, exile and perhaps total dismissal.

Bill has no fear of that.

TO BILL FROM BILL’S SOLICITOR

On 27 Sep 2018, at 9:48 am

Dear William,

In relation to your case with the archdiocese. I value your trust and your complete authority to conduct this negotiation as I see fit. I believe that it is an extremely delicate negotiation and I must proceed to maximise the amount of funds and resources made available to provide for you into the future. I think that I should approach the situation diplomatically with that end in mind.

I propose to write to the Archbishop today opening the conversation. I will do so in a highly diplomatic fashion that will on the face of it express sympathy for both positions but in reality it will have one purpose and that is to help you achieve your end to the greatest degree possible. In my view you are owed a duty of case and I think the church should accept that without too much controversy. However, we will see.

Regards,

Cahir

WITHOUT PREJUDICE

2.10.2018

Dear Sirs

We refer to the above matter and to our recent discussion and correspondence.

As you are aware an Administrator was placed in the parish formerly lead by your client over the weekend. This was dealt with personally by our client and the appointment was explained to the parishioners.

Our client has reflected on the issues over the weekend and we have discussed several approaches with him and we are instructed to forward the following;

1.       Our client is mindful of the situation facing your client and, as he has previously expressed, would ask your client to take time to reflect on the decisions before him;
2.       To assist your client we are to suggest that our client would grant your client a 6 month leave of absence which would be extended by a further 6 months if needed. At the end of the required period your client would then advise of his final decision (we will advise of our belief on those decisions at the end of this exchange);
3.       Whilst on his period of leave your client would not retain his faculties as a priest but would continue to be a priest of the Archdiocese of Armagh;
4.       Our client would maintain your client with a stipend (around €1700 per month) to be paid to a bank account nominated by your client;
5.       Our client would further contribute a sum towards accommodation costs for your client (sum to be discussed);
6.       Your client would take the time to rest and reflect and, if he feels it is appropriate, seek assistance to aid his reflection;
7. Your client will maintain this channel of communication and will not insult our client, the Church or figures in the Church on any social media or other forum.

We believe this is a reasonable approach and one which will assist in achieving a fair outcome for all concerned.

As we understand things your client has declared that he wishes to renounce the Church completely so we would ask that he takes time to reflect on a huge decision for someone who has pursued a life within that Church. Ultimately your client will need to decide if he wishes to renounce his Church, or if he remains within the Church if he wishes to leave the priesthood or if ultimately he wishes to return to his role as a priest. This is a graduated decision process and we accept it will take time.

Finally an issue has arisen within the Parish. Your client has locked the house and our client and the Administrator need to access the property as the various baptism registers and marriage rolls are stored there. Children may need their Baptism records for First Communion and Confirmation and so it is essential that our client can access the property. We would ask that your client return the keys (via this office if that is easier) as a matter of urgency.

We await hearing from you with your comment and with proposals to return the keys.

Thank you

Yours

Fintan Canavan

FROM BILLS PROPOSED LANDLORD

FROM CAHIR TO BILL

HI William,

I am anxious to have a meeting with yourself and Karl, to firm up on our strategy going forward and how we are going to achieve the unconditional exit you want but with appropriate financial recompense.

Would any time on Friday suit you?

I think we need to have a very clear pathway to what we want mapped out and take it from there.

Kind regards,
Cahir

Archbishop Martin comes out of this correspondence a lot better than Bill does. The Archbishop is kind, considerate, sensitive and caring. It’s a pity the person he was writing to does not display the same qualities.

Like

5.57 His final letters are missing only one thing: the invoice numbers.
He writes entirely different from both the content and tone of his speech at that March meeting we had….where I got the coffees. Few bishops are kind, considerate, sensitive or caring. Eamon Martin certainly is not. As Drury opined on hearing of his appointment ” he will be very efficient but he will never be loved.” Cold and clinical to the depth of his purchased soul. WM
Many letters are written with a view as to who apart from the intended will read/see them…as we now have on this Blog.
No invoice numbers.

If you knew beforehand that “many letters are written with a view as to who apart from the intended will read/see them”, then why on earth did you have Pat publish them, Mr Mulvihill?

You have made an appalling lapse of good judgement. This has completely backfired on you.

If Eamon Martin is as “cold and clinical” as you said, then he must be rubbing his hands in glee at your having handed him such a victory. And on the very social medium on which you periodically insult him??

You have made a public laughing-stock of yourself.

I doubt that Eamon Martin is as you described. After this massive faux pas, I simply don’t trust your judgement.

If anything, I suspect that Eamon Martin will pray for you over the very public mess you have created for yourself.

Like

Mulvihill at 11.24, if Archbishop Martin (and it’s a big “if”) did strike you as a person who behaved very differently from the person this correspondence suggests, then I’m pretty sure that you had more than a small hand in provoking him.
Personally, I know that I would find you extremely unlikeable, and very hard to endure.

Like

I was thinking the same. Yes, we do not have the full insight to context, emotions, etc., but the correspondence from the Archbishop is measured and kind. Of course, there will be the usual dissenters…..
Pat – I’d be interested to hear your opinion on this point.

All the cash and favours for services rendered to clerics by their wealthy networks never see the light of day.
Respect to Bill Mulvihill for his transparency. The anonymous circling clerical parasites and paedophile protectors are showing their true colours this morning.

I agree with you, at 9.57 p.m. Bill has done himself absolutely no favours in publishing this private correspondence.

Archbishop Martin comes across as paternally kind and considerate; Bill, on the other hand…

If Bill was hoping to embarrass the archbishop, he certainly has not succeeded.

Isn’t there something in the correspondence, an agreement that Bill was not to insult the archbishop on social media? As they say, ‘that went well, didn’t it? It’s good to know that Bill is a man of his word.

Bishop Buckley, I am very surprised that you agreed to publish this correspondence. What point was Bill hoping to make? The action shows extremely poor judgment on Bill’s part. And, it has to be said, on yours, too.

Bill has gained nothing positive from this; in fact, he has made himself look both petulant and foolish.

Did you, Bishop Buckley, advise Bill that this might be how he would be perceived pre-publication? I cannot believe that a man of your intelligence, journalistic talent, and good heart did not forsee this, and advise against it.

Like

I respect Pat for many things, and one of them is his judgement. He was wise to caution Bill against this.

12.48 I respect my Bishop. He will not pay out big sums to indiscreet members. We look after him and he looks after us when it matters.

Personally, I’d have ensured that William Mulvihill received nothing at all apart from a very large legal bill. That would serve him right.

Pax.

Genuine Clergy with proper Christian values do not treat anyone the way the vile clerics & their cohorts treat William Mulvihill & Karen on this blog daily.

I think the Archbishop was more than fair with Fr. Bill. Very generous severance package, and looks like the door was open for him to return to the priesthood. What’s the point of sharing this correspondence?

Like

I am saddened to say this, Pat, but I believe that your journalistic objectivity has been compromised by William Mulvihill. The man appears to have you under some sort of spell.

Like

Read that documentation it is fairly obvious that Bill was been treated very well and given too much time and money to get his life sorted post priesthood.

Like

I think it should be mentioned that in most proper jobs if you leave, you leave after giving +/- notice with nothing unless you’re made redundant.
I don’t know what Bill’s intention was in publishing these but for me it’s just reinforcing clerical pampering and privilege. The year’s stipend etc is luxury beyond most people’s wildest dreams.
And incidentally the salary you got while not ministering was higher than my take home pay working full time as a senior nurse.
You’re paying for this, folks.

Like

8.44, well said!

Yes, clerical pampering, privilege and entitlement is obvious from this correspondence, all of it related to Mulvihill.

That arrangement between Mulvihill and Martin makes me incredibly angry. How dare any diocese squander people’s money in this way! Never again will I give any money to the Church. This has sickened me! If I left my job, I’d get a month’s salary, and that’s it. Period! This guy Mulvihill walks away with a years salary and accommodation grant. Plus! While he was genteely figuring out his future, the effort was again financially supported by Armagh archdiocese.

I cannot believe the brass neck these fellows show.

Never again!!

Like

I see on social media that even the trads, who tend to be clericalist and also generous when the church basket is passed round, are now sayong that they no longer give to the Church but keep the money, or, more usually, give it to charities outside the RCC.

Legally, as Bill was self-employed, he couldn’t have enforced anything in any court. Even a full employee in any secular job who resigns does not get a washer. Why did Bill think he was a special case?

Like

Yes, @ 1.02, but OUGHT he to have? Remember this is other people’s money, not their own.
Why should priests be treated better than the people who financially support them? Why do they think people would respect them when priests show such disregard for their benefactors’ generosity?
Have the smell of the sheep about them? How can wolves smell of sheep?

Like

I had little sympathy for Bill Mulvihill before today’s blog item. Now I have none. Is Bill so insensitive that he thought sharing this correspondence would make him look good? He spun things out for a year even though he had no intention of staying and got a solicitor involved (whose fees he tried to sponge off the diocese). The diocese was patient, kind and generous. I have a lot more respect now for the Archbishop of Armagh.

Like

Archbishop Martin has went further than most Bishop and they are company men but Archbishop Martin has been shown compassion and care.
Ger will not be getting an accom allowance or big pay off so some maybe asking why well Bill wanted to go but Ger is fighting to stay in and due to Canon Law he has to be on reduced salary then hopefully out.
Archbishop Martin has been very kind with Diocesan funds and shows that money was not his motive but care for Bill.

What is the point of making this public?
You comment that Bill has nothing to fear in publishing these – that would be true since he’s burned those bridges but I still don’t see the point in this. They are just full of boring legalese – exactly what you’d expect.
The correspondence between you and Cahal Daly would be much more interesting.
I guess the Billy Mulvihill show will run on for the foreseeable future.

I try to look upon this Pat with some balance. I see in places a considerate Eamon Martin. Yet I can only imagine the hurt felt by Bill.
What makes me uncomfortable is the sheer fast-and-loose approach to the money paid by people of the Archdiocese. Simply disgusting. A reference….. we all know about Eamon Martin and references. I can only guess what he’s paying and offering Ryan McAleer.

Like

I believe in reading this that the Archbishop has acted with compassion and respect towards Bill, nothing nerves me with these correspondences.
Bill seems to be the problem and has created the problem, sadly with nothing better to do but try and nail Eamon Martin to a tree!

Like

Yes, we can now see why Eamon Martin has pussy-footed around Ryan McAleer so much. Ryan could do a lot of damage too!!

Like

Having read these correspondences twice I can arrive at only one conclusion. Archbishop Martin has behaved honourably, generously, impeccably, caringly and very pastorally. He gave Bill time to think and reflect and offered him every opportunity to walk a harmonious and peaceful pathway, without hurt or judgment. The behaviour now of Bill on your blog is totally disingenuous and a devious recall of events, wanting us to believe he was a victim. This is untrue from all the correspondence. Even Bill’s solicitors are far more conciliatory towards The Archbishop than Bill wants. They were trying wisely to advice their client. To date only Archbishop Martin is unblemished but regrettably both Pat and Bill are revealed as a duo of mischief makers. I agree with the comments from DP and Chris. Only recently I expressed the view that Bill had Pat doing his dirty work. So far, the information does not paint either Pat or Bill in a good light. I feel sad for you Pat but have zero sympathy for Bill. The Archbishop’s letter is exceptionally kind, conciliatory and full of Christian compassion. The big loser is Bill. My God, he was so well looked after despite his petty games.

Like

There was a song sung by first holy communion children in preparatiin for 1st penance – Zaccheus was a greedy little man – of which Bill will be aware. Now we can all sung – Billie Mulvey was a greedy little man…The noble winner in this sorrowful drama is Archbishop Martin. What a pathetic action for Bill to take in the hope he’d be getting more and more. I have lost any respect for Mr. Mulvihill whose behaviour outlined by his solicitors is mendacious in its extreme demands. Bill has benefit better than any priest I know who left ministry. He deserved support but what a most ungrateful man is Bill.

Like

The key thing in the Zaccheus story is of course that he paid back fourfold what he took.
Just saying like.

9.57: I agree wholeheartedly with your conclusion: Archbishop Martin stands head and shoulders above Bill in his calm, reasonable and measured approach. No threats of any kind, no judgments but a sincere acceptance of Bill’s decision. I also believe what Chris at 11.03 states: “..that Pat’s journalistic objectivity has been compromised by William Mulvihill..” I stated before that Pat’s attachment to and dependence on Bill for whatever reason was unwise and could lead to egregious injury. I hope Pat can redeem himself from the hooks of Bill.

Like

Mr. Mulvihill cannot complain about the offer of a severance package given to him. People in the world of commerce and economic
work cannot walk out of their job and demand five figure sums of money and gratituities to pay for a car, accomodation and travel. In priesthood all these matters are the responsibility of the priest himself. I agree that a year’s salary is acceptable as a way of supporting the priest. Bill has received or is being offrred much. He chose to disavow his baptism, priesthood and church. Recently my sister retired from being a secretary in a huge school after 27 yesrs due to ill health. She most certainly did not receive anything like Bill’s offer. She didn’t complain. Why Bill is choosing to share these letters is very questionable because the only man left standing with human decency and dignity is the Archbishop. I pray that you, Pat, will not be tainted by your relationship with Bill.

Like

I have published all the correspondence above and have edited nothing.
I make no attempt whatsoever to suggest who it reflects well on. That is for the reader to decide.
Eamon Martin’s writings to Bill and others are written carefully and with the full knowledge that they may become public.
We can, if we wish, make a complete judgement of others by what they write.
But: Actions speak louder than words”.

I regard Bill as a friend. I am not blind to the faults of any of my friends and they are not blind to mine.

I generally give great licence to all who comment here.

But I am not and never will be controlled by anyone. My life has proven that.

Like

Not controlled, but I think you’re being manipulated here. I have an opinion on it but I’m not going to say whether i think it’s by Bill or his many detractors, or both. 🥴

Like

Pat, yes actions do indeed speak louder than words. Whatever about the interpersonal dialogue and tone between Bill and the Archbishop the actions are: a year’s stipend, costs for furniture storage, a handsome sum of 20 thousand odd Euro, a year for Bill to make up his mind and an offer of a reference. As pointed out by others no employer would have been so generous.

Like

This correspondence is yet another argument why priests should be treated as employees, then they would just work their notice and leave with nothing.

I dealt with Eamon Martin with regard one of his priests who hurt me. His letters to me did not reflect what I experienced sitting in front of him. He is a politician, not a pastor.

Pat, I am a big supporter of you but this Mr. Mullivill debacle would need to come to and end quickly. If you have a strategy Pat, the drip feed approach is certainly not helping. If there is some form of reverse psychology in play, the Mullivill case is in no way helped by publishing these letters, in fact, the opposite is achieved.
If there is a big reveal, it needs to be expedited because your goodwill and perhaps a certain over generous naivety on your part is being tested.
I don’t know what information you have but, if Mr. Mullivill is overplaying his hand, you need to protect your legacy that you spoke about recently.
It is a curious case and I respect your judgement, but please exercise caution and bring this to an early conclusion.

Like

Bill Mulvihill has a high sense of entitlement. The rented property he got the diocese to pay for is in in the very desirable town of Greystones. Only the best for Bill. I know of no employer who, for over a year, would pay a person who resigned (not sacked or made redundant) their salary for a year, rent, removal and storage costs and then a golden handshake. Yet Bill seethes with rage and wanted his legal costs paid, too.

I agree it’s astounding that The Church has looked after this Apostate paying his way and not an ounce of gratitude because he feels entitled. After his disgraceful behaviour he should have been out on his arse and left to deal with his own actions. Archbishop Martin instead of pandering to this ingrate should have administered a severe belt of the Crozier🙄

You are right I am not a diagnostician. That is why in my final paragraph I used the word ‘ suggested’ in my outlining of a ‘possible’ scenario.
I felt justified in doing this because recently you felt comfortable enough to suggest a certain Irish bishop had several mental health issue some of which were psycho sexual. It’s ok for you to evaluate someone’s mental health but not ok for your contributors.
It’s at this point I have decided to step away from the issue.
Bill, whatever your reasons for allowing your personal correspondence to appear on the blog, I hope it works out for you.
I really do wish you well, I may have baited you on the blog but never meant any malice; just a challenge.
I see no point in contributing further. I’m not saying I won’t post on the blog again. I just won’t post on this issue.
Pat’s tagline on the blog was / possible still is “the truth will set you free even if the truth is revolting” that is not really the truth.
The blog only reflects The Truth as Pat see it and it would appear he will not countenance anything that suggest that he might be guilty of coercive behaviour. This might explain his editing of my last post.
And as for my IQ Bill, I’ve never had it tested but I’m flattered that you think it might be high. Or maybe you’re not suggesting that at all.

If you wanted this correspondence to show anything you should have corresponded with Eamon without a solicitor first to see what he would offer. Judging by other reports on this blog this sounds fairly standard.

My understanding is that Bill and Eamon initially spoke by phone and in person.

Recordings of those conversations would be interesting listening.

Like

But if Eamon offered something different first surely that should appear here to explain this correspondence. Without that detail of what Eamon offered in that conversation, I’m forced to the conclusion that Eamon made a reasonable offer to Bill and Bill escalated it by involving a solicitor, with a view to getting more out of the diocese.

9.24 ” I think I’ll get an assessment done on you.” said Eamonn Martin. I then got a letter of apology…I had the sensitivity not to put that up. There are priests in Armagh who know what followed from that phone call. Father John Bradley was deputised to relate to me ” Bill, they want you to know you are highly regarded and always welcome at the top table in Armagh.” That was recorded so it should not be disputed in this pugnacious place. The only time you should ever send a solicitors letter is if you’ve got to or if you think it will make someone do what you want. Because if they ignore the letter you have to be prepared to follow through in court.

Is the older man in a position of power in some way manipulating the younger man.
Conry was close to Bruno Heim
Elsie close to Worlock and Hume
Nursie’s secretary has been with him nigh on 13 or 14 years. He has never worked in a parish.
Elsie used to get through private secretary’s like a dose of salt in Birmingham and Westminster too – depending on the favour or not of the Nun!

Bishop Patrick, have you contacts in Meath? Could you ask them if there has been any recent departures?

Like

I’ve heard of one. But my informer has not given me permission to use.

Like

Bishop Patrick, if your informer is a priest and they has not given you permission to use, perhaps one of your lay friends in Tullamore might be able to assist in this particular instance?

I imagine the Meath departure is one of those who were ordained within the last 5 years. That’s the usual craic nowadays.

I would hope that Bill Mulvihill would not have had the misfortune of crossing paths with Fr Ryan McAleer. This man is openly parading his lovers in public. Drunken escapades in Belfast when at home. Would Bill be interested in discussing further? If not…. fair enough. What is Bill’s view on the ultra arrogant Ryan McAleer? Should he be banished? Or does money talk with that connection and Amy Martin…..? From what we are hearing in this diocese…it is the only thing keeping him in…and of course what he is threatening to tell….

Like

5.56 I sent Ryan an email in 2018 ( as Paul Murphy ) and had two phone conversations with him telling him to leave. I actually think I understand what has happened Ryan, I am both disappointed and sad. I did not know him well but was well versed on his files…he gave Brady and E Martin a good run for their money but they won, they drove him into the ground. He was a good person, I have no idea how he his…I mailed him 2 months ago..no response. He is now part of the carnage of the Roman Catholic Church. I hope he avoids a conviction and moves on with his life. To be very honest, at one stage he reminded me of myself when I was a conservative little prick. I grew out of it quickly. Bill Mulvihill

This 100%. Bill never shuts up about money yet he got a “redundancy” payment of more than 1 years salary, housing paid for and various other bits, NONE of which he was entitled to in any jurisdiction anywhere! He resigned and was entitled to nothing! This nonsense, money hunger and living in financial La La land seems to be a significant factor with priests. He has relentlessly abused Amy, constantly slagged off other priests with unsubstantiated allegations and been a financial liability to the diocese. His political opinions are nonsense ( pro- Russia – are you mad Bill?). Much like Ger Fitz he expects a free financial life. Ridiculous.

Having been privy to details of one such canonical investigation, does it probe Bill Mulvihill’s curiosity to learn that the above mentioned cleric refused to attend an opportunity for him to provide his account of matters at preliminary investigation stage?

I think you are giving Bill leeway, Pat, because he reminds you of yourself. But he’s not you. He has neither your intelligence, nor acumen.

Don’t give him too much leeway. He’s an unpredictably erratic fool with a child’s desire to be centre-stage. He’ll bring you down with him.

Well, I have read the correspondence thoroughly and the numerous comments. Now I would like to comment.
1) Archbishop Martin has been very compassionate to Mr. Mulvihill. The archdiocese has supported him financially. WM should be thanking them but is in effect very ungrateful. All of this has come out very clear in the correspondence.
2) DG and anonymous are quite correct about PTSD. Letter dated 6h October proves this.
3) For a long time, WM has been dominating the blog withe nonsense statements and corrections to nonsense statements. He has been rambling too long. MC ranted and raved (despite a lot of patience and tolerance from PB) and was banned. WM needs the same treatment.
4) The general consensus on the blog today is that the Archbishop’s reputation has soared and WM’s has gone down the plug hole. Even some of the Archbishop’s vehement critics have seen him in a better light and been very supportive. WM has shot himself in the foot big time. Let us all hope that he has not shot this blog and blogger in the foot.
5) WM has been well looked after and all he shows are boulders on his shoulders.
6) I do think PB should come off the fence and declare where he stands on this issue and not just leave it to the readers.
7) Let us all hope and pray that WM gets inner peace and gets on with his life.

Thank you. I did not expect that. I try to be considerate but I can fly off the handle and be a bit grumpy. Personnel will testify to that.
Sometimes a bit of tough love is required. Please switch off, calm down and do not take some of the comments today too personally. Do not dwell on it. You are hurting and you need help.
We are all living through difficult times, Covid, Brexit. Ukraine and Climate change. We all need to step back and calm down.

William
His Grace Archbishop Eamon Martin cannot apply to laicize you until 2024 as the New Canon Law changes state that it is after five years the Ordinary can apply for automatic laicization.
Just now you would need to apply or the Archbishop would need to start a costly Canonical trail so he will not start a trail as you would not cooperate so he will wait the five years and it will be applied.
Why you denouce your Baptism and will not apply to be laisized is the way you opperate.
Save the date 2024 however it could change till 2025 if the Canon Lawyers decide your last day was once the settlement year was up.

By renouncing his baptism Mulvihill has brought upon himself an automatic latae sententiae excommunication. Removing him from the clerical state would be otiose.

Can. 1331 — § 1. An excommunicated person is prohibited:

1° from celebrating the Sacrifice of the Eucharist and the other sacraments;

2° from receiving the sacraments;

3° from administering sacramentals and from celebrating the other ceremonies of liturgical worship;
