The first thing we need to realise and say is that the Israeli and Palestinian situation is really complex and only a fool would propose resolving it with simple or simplistic solutions.
I have been to Israel twice, liked it and fell in love with Jerusalem.
I could live in Jerusalem no problem.
The conflict is very sad because a people, the Jews, who have suffered so much themselves, are now inflicting great suffering on another nation – the Palestinians.
And of course, Palestine is compounding the problem by shelling Israel causing Israel to retaliate with killings.
It is a very vicious and violent circle.
I cannot see how the situation can be solved militarily.
So the only real resolution can be by negotiation and peaceful negotiation.
That means reading that there cannot be a WINNER and a LOSER.
There have to be two WINNERS.
That will mean that each side will have to make sacrifices.
JERUSALEM
Jerusalem is a particularly difficult problem because both nations regard it as their capital.
Most Jews, I understand, do not want to rebuild the Temple on the Temple Mount until the Messiah comes – as the exact site if the old Temple is not certain.

So the Jews and Palestinians would have to agree to share the land – a two nation land.
And, they would have to agree to share Jerusalem and the Temple Mount.
I know that this is very contentious and feelings run very deep.
But should the sons and daughters of God, albeit they call him different names, not be able share a land and a city?
Is it the extremists on each side that are the problem?

The Israeli/Palestine conflict is very regrettable. It is a very divisive and complex political, cultural and religious issue with extremists on both sides. We have Muslim, Christian and Jewish beliefs side by side, each claiming ownership for very historical territory. It’s not a situation that can be solved essily. The Al Asqua Mosque, The Dome of the Rock and Jerusslem are the three symbols being fought over and no political or religious entity wants to acquiesce on their perceived rightful symbols.. It is such a beautiful part of the world that divisiveness, conflict, war or enmities are so evil, destructive and a cause of so much death and hatred. The road to unity, agreement and peace is fragile.

There has never been a nation of Palestine. There was no Palestinian organization until 1964 and no Palestinian cause until 1970. The PLO led by Arafat began the movement of radical Islamic terrorism that exists to this day. Arafat’s men murdered Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany.
The Arabs living in Gaza are indigenous to Egypt. Those living in the West Bank are indigenous to Jordan. There is no indigenous Arab population to Israel. The Israelis are not colonizers. There is no “occupied” Palestinian land. When Palestinians refer to the illegal occupation, they are referring to the entire state of Israel.
Palestinians led by Hamas to this day say that their firing of rockets at Israel will end when Israel ends the occupation. What this means is that Palestinians will stop waging war as soon as Israel ceases to exist. Peace is defined as every Jew vacating the land and allowing Arabs to control 100% of it.

Did you see the film footage of Ariel Sharon and Yasser Arafat each trying to establish hegemony over the other by refusing to walk through a doorway first? I kid you not. It was human power psychology at work.
Apparently, conceding to a polite gesture that allows you to walk through a doorway ahead of another is a sign of weakness, an unconscious acknowledgement that the other person is stronger, superior. I accept that the problems in Israel / Jerusalem / Palestine seem intractable, and in the meantime many people are hurt and suffer. However, we must bear in mind that both sides are bolstered by religious belief and culture that is patently damaging and undermining of any stability or peace, in that both religious bases are patently simply ridiculous and unbelievable, but also toxic and damaging. However, these two religious underpinnings continue to be responsible for giving people the motivation and excuse to inflict suffering on each other and themselves. The older I get the more ridiculous I see religious belief which constructs simplistic and idiotic constructs of our relationship with a supposed God, each other, and the earth. Both Judaism and Islam, and for that matter Christianity, base their beliefs on an intervention from God some thousands of years ago in a particular part of the world in which he makes a wandering group of shepherd and goat herders his chosen people the focus of his whole supposed plan of salvation. And from that flows the “story” of the Jews, Christians and Muslims, for it really is myth / story invented as they went along. Add on various accretions of contrived and constructed religious nonsense and we arrive at what these various religions beliefs now. In the meantime, inspite of their professed love of God, humanity and each other, they have spent thousands of years slitting each other’s throats, often in the name of the religious belief that they hold. If you want an answer as to why the situation is as it is in the Middle East, as well as in many other places, look to the toxic influence of ridiculous religion. I’m surprised so many people are taken in by it all. It’s just so silly and unbelievable.

Religion has no doubt complicated the situation. But it is not the heart of the matter. This is about a people who were forcibly removed from their homes -some might call it ethnic cleansing – by a bunch of wealthy foreigners and an army. This is a territory and resource war with some religious sites attached for good measure.

(1) All illegal Israeli settlements either returned outright to displaced Palestinians or else financially compensated at current rate for land and housing. Whatever Palestinians choose must be enforced even if Israelis lose their homes. They stole them in the first place and are illegal under international law.
(2) Jerusalem designated a city state under UN control. All religions and none welcome. Nobody owns Jerusalem and all holy sites free for all to worship at under international control.
(3) Palestinian controlled areas under new government in Ramallah. All existing Hamas people to resign; entirely new government to be formed with international assistance until elections held. All Palestinian armed groups to decommission weapons; new army to be formed under control from parliament in Ramallah.
(4) Palestinian and Israeli travel through all areas, Palestinian and Israeli, to be unhindered – borders only for administrative purposes.
For starters at least.

In the meantime, here’s little titbit from the Dean at St Chad’s Cathedral Birmingham (in spite of national guidelines concerning Covid being very different !) and every other church I know of having returned to normality:
For the purposes of Safety for all concerned, the Cathedral directive is that everybody coming to Mass in the Cathedral wear a face covering which you bring yourself. We accept that this is not required in all churches, but it remains our standard here and if you choose to come here, we respectfully ask you to abide by this standard. If you do not have a recognisable lanyard that says you are medically exempt, then please do not be offended if you are asked more than once to wear a face covering. Our stewards and volunteers are simply doing what has been asked of them to keep this standard of safety in the Cathedral. Please be respectful of their role. If you feel that what we are asking is unreasonable, then you are welcome to choose a church that is more in keeping with your own wishes. We ask that you do not seek to change what we have established here for good reason and which is reviewed regularly.

Not in the least. But I am laughing at those lay people who are expressing dismay at the triumphant – sounding ‘National Synthesis’.
Why lay people agree to take part in the synodal process when they must have known that any radical calls for departure from Church teaching and tradition would be stoutly resisted by the bishops? Lay involvement simply gave legitimacy and respectability to a process that would always, from start to finish, be under the management (who am I kidding?) the control of the bishops.
It is as though the Vatican had instructed: Let them have a good old gripe; get it out of their system; and then we’ll decide what’s what.

However…..my view is that many laity has long since given up on listening to the hierarchy and any ‘official line’. They have taken note of the experience of their own lives and families, and have integrated all kinds of different situations, issues, problems and relationships in to their lives and coped with it. They come up with their own solutions and ways of living. For the hierarchy this is terminally dangerous. As any wise general will do on a battlefield, where he moves around and surrounds resistance and cuts it off so that it withers and moves forward leaving it behind, so the laity are doing with the hierarchy. They move around it, leave it behind, ignore it and move on. The hierarchy is becoming and will become irrelevant. People will move on. They already have. So, what the hierarchy does with the synodal process is in part already irrelevant. Their power and influence is withering. The move is happening. Bye bye, bishops and priests !

The area has been Palestinian since before the New Testament. The Bible itself – the last book I’d rely on -mentions Philistines repeatedly. After Muslim occupation in the 8th century the existing non-Jewish population became Muslim. They are locals. Just not Jews. Not only that for five hundred years prior to 1921 the area is referred to as the Ottoman province of Palestine. Dont forget for 500 years Ireland was a province of England and Wales and later Britain. Does that mean our shower should clear off and let the Unionists have the whole island? And if we are going to go back to the Stone Age, shouldnt the US be given back to the Cheyenne and the Sioux?
If nobody was there in the 1930s and the Jews just walked in, how come about 3 million locals became refugees and at least 100,000 were murdered by the Stern Gang and the Israeli army in 1947? Did these people, who call themselves Palestinian, not exist and simply appear out of nowhere with suitcases in Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon and Syria?
