FREEMAN – REQUEST FOR COMMENT FROM IRISH BISHOPS.

KIERAN O REILLY
FRANCIS DUFFY
SEAMUS FREEMAN

ICCB have updated their website.

Letter to O’Reilly forwarded to Duffy – Tuam

Dear Kieran,

I write to you in your capacity as the episcopal secretary of the Irish Catholic Bishop’s Conference.

Your attention may have been drawn to my blog of today on Bishop Seamus Freeman? If not, here is the link for you:

Here is the quote from a former Maynooth seminarian on Bishop Freeman:

“I was in the Pleasuredome, a London sauna under the railway arches in Waterloo and open 24 hours.

This was around 6 or 7 years ago.

It was very late, around 3 or 4 am.

I was in a cubicle sitting back, naked, with my ass sticking out. An invitation for a top to come and do his thing.

This older guy appeared, removed his towel and displayed a big hard xxxx

He tried to come in to f… me but I waved him away.

I was stunned because I recognised him as Seamus Freeman.

At the time I lived in co Kilkenny and was familiar with his face in newspapers and online.

I had also met him in Rome years earlier when he was superior general of the Pallotines. So I knew the face well”.

I wanted to ask you as the episcopal secretary of the ICBC for a comment and a response to the very serious allegations made against Seamus Freeman, either from yourself or the Conference’s press officer.

In particular:

1. We’re other Irish bishops, including you aware of Bishop Freeman’s lifestyle?

2. If so, had any disciplinary been taken against him?

3. Do you deplore and condemn Seamus Freeman’s lifestyle?

4. Does the Conference, or you personally, know of any other livng Irish Bishop who is sexually active, either homosexually or heterosexually?

Sincerely yours,

Your brother bishop,

+ Pat Buckley

PS: Can I hereby and formally ask you to copy me letter to all the members of the ICBC.

10.51 Go to Specsavers! It was Bishop Seamus Freeman who was preaching at us fools who are fools no longer – judging us & telling us how to live whilst he was sticking his Mickey in strangers in the gay saunas every chance he got & we paying his entrance fee for him. 2 faced Bishop & they all know what the others up to.

Wow a new dementia that makes you poke young men in gay saunas!
No, wait…
You mean all the clergy of Ireland have got dementia?

Some individuals develop dementia and the invariable consequence of dementia is a decline in cognition and level of functioning. Despite the effects of this illness, people with dementia still seek intimacy and companionship as part of their expression of basic human instincts and have the right to equal enjoyment of relationships and privacy for such. At the same time, they have the right to be safeguarded against abuse. The law in England and Wales, in common with the majority, if not all, jurisdictions around the world is clear on the requirement for contemporaneous consent to sexual activity, thereby creating unmet needs for people with dementia who no longer have the capacity to consent to intimacy/sexuality. This creates an impetus to find ways to empower individuals with dementia to enjoy intimacy in a safe and lawful way and enable them to live well despite dementia. This article proposes an instrument known as the Advance Decision on Intimacy, in pursuit of the concept of precedent autonomy, to empower individuals to make decisions about how they would wish to express their sexuality at a material time in future when they would have lost the capacity to consent to such acts. While the article is framed by reference to English law, the principles are of wider relevance.

Sexuality is a human’s need to express intimacy, but persons with dementia may not know how to appropriately meet their needs for closeness and intimacy due to their decline in cognition. Generally, the interaction among brain, physical, psychological, and environmental factors can create what we call ISB (inappropriate sexual behavior). The most likely change in the sexual behaviour of a person with dementia is indifference. However, ISB in dementia appear to be of two types–intimacy-seeking and disinhibited–that differ in their association with dementia type, dementia severity and, possibly, other concurrent behavioural disorder. Tensions develop from uncertainties regarding which, or when, behaviours are to be considered ‘inappropriate’ (i.e. improper) or abnormal. While most ISB occur in the moderate to severe stages of Alzheimer’s dementia, they may also be seen in early stages of frontotemporal dementia because of the lack of insight and disinhibition. ISB are often better managed by non-pharmacological means, as patients may be less responsive to psychoactive therapies, but non-pharmacological interventions do not always stop the behaviour.

Inappropriate sexual behavior (ISB) is a relatively common and potentially disruptive form of behavior in people with dementia. It can cause considerable distress and put placements and people at risk. Yet it is poorly researched and understood. In addition to non-pharmacological approaches to management, a wide range of classes of medication has been used in ISB, and the results have been reported as single cases or short series, though none has been the subject of a randomized clinical trial, in part because of the lack of a well-defined method of observing and measuring ISB, as well as the significant ethical considerations. Pharmacological treatments for which there is low-level evidence of efficacy in the literature include antidepressants, antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, cholinesterase inhibitors, hormonal agents, and beta-blockers. None of the drugs discussed here is licensed for use in ISB, and elderly people, particularly those with dementia, are at high risk of adverse effects. Caution is advised before using medication in this group of people. It is important to consider alternative non-pharmacological treatments, as well as discussing issues of ethics and consent with those involved, before initiating treatment. It is helpful to identify and monitor target symptoms. Pharmacological treatments should be started at low dose and titrated up slowly and carefully. Nevertheless, in some situations, medication may provide a useful part of a management plan for ISB.

Persons with progressive cognitive impairment such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease may display an array of challenging behaviours. For instance, levels of agitation and aggression have been reported as high as 33% in home-dwelling individuals and 80% in those residing in institutions. One form of challenging behaviour that may be displayed by this group is inappropriate sexual behaviour (ISB), but it is often overshadowed by other behaviours such as aggression. Inappropriate sexual behaviour involves any verbal of physical action of a sexual nature which is displayed in an inappropriate social context. Examples of ISB include: exposure of genitals in public/ward environments, ‘groping’ of nurses and masturbation in public areas. It has been estimated that the prevalence of ISB ranges from 2% to 17% of individuals with progressive cognitive impairment. Although it is less frequent than other challenging behaviours, it still may have significant deleterious effects on the victim’s health.

Late-onset criminal behaviors involving socially inappropriate actions such as unwanted sexual advances, public urination, and fighting usually do not occur in the context of Alzheimer’s disease. However, such behaviors are common in another type of dementia called behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). In fact, Liljegren and colleagues reported that over 37% of 171 persons with bvFTD got into legal trouble with socially inappropriate behaviors.
BvFTD typically occurs in people in their 50s and is characterized by a gradual onset of personality changes including impulsive and inappropriate behaviors. Over time, these behaviors become more pronounced. Cognitive changes involving memory, organizational abilities, and language gradually develop, but after, not before, the behavioral changes. Early brain damage in bvFTD involves brain regions that are part of the “emotional salience network.” This network includes regions such as the amygdala and insular cortex, areas known to regulate emotional processing. Alzheimer’s disease initially attacks different areas of the brain related to cognitive processing, memory, and planning (referred to as the “default mode network”). Why these different forms of dementia initially attack specific brain networks remains poorly understood, but it is an area of high scientific and clinical interest.
When a middle-aged or elderly person gets into trouble with the law for the first time in his or her life, psychiatrists may be asked to evaluate the person in order to determine if a neuropsychiatric condition contributed to the criminal behavior. In addition to dementias, other neuropsychiatric disorders that can begin in mid to late life, including bipolar disorder and alcohol abuse, may lead to criminal behaviors. The medical management of conditions such as bvFTD, mania, and alcohol abuse, and the legal management of criminal behaviors committed by persons suffering from these conditions demonstrate the important interaction between medicine and the law.

Not sure what slurry is, but I am sure that no one appreciates being snitched on by a sexual partner (or attempted sexual partner). Prostitutes who snitch on their clients are abhorred. Places of debauchery have a code of honour about this too. Snitching on a man who has just died and who suffered from dementia is not a contribution to church reform. It is just nastiness.

@11.59 – you don’t understand dementia.
You suggest dementia caused him to research such a place a go there without full comprehensive of what he was doing.
In reality a dementia would more likely cause him to regress into old habits, old routines…. but without the previous level of discretion.

MMM: THE RESURRECTION!
Nope, I never went!
Firstly, my condolences to you Cecily. Norman sounds to have been a man ‘after my own heart’ I’d like to have known.
Your 23/8 comment on husband Norman’s death, a fellow Co Down humanist I believe, seems to have been misunderstood by Magna @ 3.42 as referring to myself. The subsequent comments on my own supposed death has certainly given me cause for thought on reading them today……a bit like watching your own wake!
So thanks for all those appreciative comments of 23/8.
Yes Francis K, I have indeed sought truth, albeit my ‘awkward questions’ as Anon @ 7.39 observes, largely went unanswered when arguing that no proof to validate religious claims actually exists. (Quite correct Seamus VII)
Anyway I’m glad, Blog Friend @ 6.03, that at least my comments got some contributors thinking outside the religious straitjacket of indoctrinated blind faith. And it’s good to know, Roy @ 5.27, that some have enjoyed my views on religious matters, even when not in agreement with them.
So, Charlie P @ 10.33, while I’m not ‘up there’ guiding the blog, it’s just that I decided to only visit it once a week and to comment less. I’ve felt little interest fruitlessly discussing monkish misbehaviour and the like. I’m more interested in basic questions concerning our existence, our beliefs, and relevant evidence concerning those matters. Indeed the recent level of continuous trolling of puerile tit-for-tat comments and an absence of intelligent focus and commentary has become tedious and dispiriting as the blog has continued to deteriorate.
I’ll ‘dip in’ from time to time, with what I hope, as Gary P @ 3.28 says, will continue to be a voice of common sense.
Meanwhile Katie, best wishes for you and the twins: I’m honoured.

10.00 am Ah yes, here we go, it was a cleric – was that why it was put up so that a member of the RCC would be blamed for same. There are some very evil trolls on here daily spitting out their venom. No religious person would put up such a “sick clerical comment” as you have said, about ANY individual. It was in fact one of the many regular sick evil trolls who decided to concoct this false allegation about MMM. Thank you MMM you are perfectly right in what you say. These daily trolls have and still are, taking over every blog of the moderator and turning away genuine people who want to comment. I, like you have lost interest in this blog and just decided to look in today to see what is the topic. OMG can it get any worse? I agree with you MMM it is deteriorating rapidly.
That obituary comment should NEVER have appeared on this blog without first proving that it was true. No, the trolls wanted to have their fun and have a skit at the hands of MMM and the RCC. Disgraceful behaviour and the blame rests with the moderator for letting that comment on to his blog.
Give thanks to the Lord for he is Good.

Monaghan was Slow with Fitzgerald but did remove him ultimately against the communities wishes , offered protocol procedures like sex clinics etc to give Fitzgerald a chance to come back again to which he denied. copious amounts of information has come out about GF since then to the point Monaghan did not allocate him a new appointment this year and nor will he get one again including not being allowed to celebrate he’s own father’s mass.

Monaghan may have been slow to act but he doing he’s job , he’s not going to broadcast it to the public what is happening behind closed doors.

Pat, your letter was an inevitable next step. Do you seriously believe that any bishop will tell you if any of them had knowledge about Bishop Freeman? Of course you don’t believe that any bishop will do so. Your letter is therefore pure mischief making and written from a mighty pedestal of judgment, purity and moral grandiosity. I believe truly that you have unearthed hidden scandals and corruption in the Church and have rattled many of us. Only the full, untainted TRUTH can lead us to better places. Bishop Freeman is now before the judgment of God (hopefully) and if we have a belief in God’s ultimate mercy, then how can we be so merciless, harsh and unforgiving? We have named the sin and moral wrongdoing of this man; we have condemned; we have ridiculed him on his appearances; we’ve sexualized him; we have judged him on his failures alone. Thus, in all this we have written him off as an irredeemable sinner and probably wish that he burn in hell!! We must confront all wrongful and immoral behaviour where and when it is a cause of scandal. In the end, how far do we go in our shredding a person in face of their sins? Remember how Jesus approached sinners: he forgave instantly but said “..go and sin no more..” Jesus, as i understand, did not continue to hound, beat down or chase people. How do we know if the Bishop had or hadn’t confessed his sin? The man is dead so we can.enjoy our slaying with all our self righteousness and arrogance.

The reason they get so upset about this is that we only know what we know about their international crimes because of the building up of evidence and also not letting them get away with it.

Willie Doherty, who spoke Italian better than an Italian, before his death had a partner/boyfriend. That man was a member of an arm of the Italian Police Force ( there are a few), he was both convivial company and very knowledgeable . Willie had always said to a certain person, who did not understand until retrospectively, that he would not see his 40th birthday. He did not. In Maynooth he was a close friend to Kieron Murphy of Clogher whom I have cited on this Blog for a crime. Willie was one of the most intelligent students to ever enter St. Patricks College Maynooth. He was treated appallingly for he wore his heart, his personality and all tangental elements to it…on his sleeve. Michael Toner and Sean Brady bear a terrible responsibility for his persecution. As I blogged before his family went out of their way to keep Armagh priest s from his funeral. Father Declan Kelly celebrated his funeral mass and was always heroic in his respect and care for William Doherty RIP. Father Kelly, at his 25th heard Bishop Smith say ” God bless us, Declan never gave us any trouble.” Declan Kelly is a Gentleman. Unfortunately he is close to Liam Bergin, that Chameleon ( deliberate error). I agree with Smith…Declan is a great man and a good priest. Why I say all this ? Willie did a lot less that Freeman….and he suffered greatly. Even Michael Murtagh ( Whom I have such respect for ) was not nice to Willie on his appointment to Dundalk…Willie was far too camp foe Michael’s tolerance…and of course the rest of them in the house. It was a 3.00am phone call to Italy that sunk his boat when Mc Cartan confronted him. Freeman…what a Bollox. End of my comments today . I am busy “transitioning .” Bill Mulvihill

+ Pat: I think you are telling us something that we already know ! We know that bishops and priests, even cardinals, have been and are sexually active, both homosexually and heterosexually and probably sometimes a bit of both, and some may well have been abusive and criminal in their sexual behaviour. I don’t think any of us are surprised at this, and it is not great a great revelation. It may be diverting to know the names and the predilections of some of them, as you are revealing about the current subject, Freeman. However, it simply confirms the duplicity and hypocrisy of the clerical caste and the hierarchical Church, which we already know about.
What would be more useful would be looking towards ways in which these behaviours and people and culture can be overcome so that the Church can move forward in its mission. I don’t see or hear much of that from your blog, rather just more and more information about something that we already know, namely the status quo. You have been asked on this blog a number of times for some discussion about the synodal path and the submissions that have been made to Rome, which while not perfect at least do provide us with a view of what could be a way forward. I’d rather be reading blog posts about that than blog posts about a wayward bishop flashing his todger in a gay sauna.

8.55 Many of us on this blog would like to be reading the replies from Irish Bishops with full details on their proposals for ways forward on all the outstanding matters that Bishop Pat Buckley has brought to the attention of these Irish Bishops & Archbishops over the years and we nite he continues to be recklessly, disrespectfully, blatantly and defiantly “ignored” by them as they are observed to “act out” in passive aggressive fashion in angry reaction to posts they don’t want highlighted on this blog with zero regard for anyone or anything but RC interests that they expect public sheep to fund. There is no “way forward” for any “business” that does not look after its “customers”. No surrender!

Like

I totally agree with your comment but for one phrase where you refer to businesses which don’t look after their customers.
The church does look after its customers very well, because the customers are actually the clergy, and it’s all about them. If you look at any liturgical celebration their special place will tell you that.
The laity merely serve and bankroll them.
If the customer is always right the clergy are the customers par excellence, because they are literally always right.

Because the priesthood isn’t for good people. The celibacy requirement is to ensure that at the bare minimum you get the confused, compromised, addicted, duplicitous and liars. We all know the clergy, by and large, have never actually been celibate, and requiring celibacy is the first interview test to make sure you get liars.

Yes, by now we know that for centuries in the Church there have been sexual misdemeanours of all kinds, some criminal, others personal moral failings, causing scandal, and it is right that the egregious crimes be uncovered and that evil perpetrators face civil courts. This blog names the wrongdoing and the wrongdoers. So be it as it has done for so long. Despite the revelations which have broken and almost destroyed trust and credibility with the church, there are many worthwhile initiatives taking place by which some efforts are being made to renew and reform, placing huge emphasis on the role and ministry of the lay faithful. Time will tell about the fruits of these initiatives. I’ve often wondered why Pat never took initiatives to gather a community of like minded people to form a new Church, why he never gathered people at seminars, retreats, days of reflection and prayer to draw up a template for a possible new evangelism, a new community of being true witnesses to Christ? Surely, we have enough evidence that a TRUE RENEWAL is urgent and why not try to advance a new initiative which would embrace the many disenchanted commenters and others who claim they want something new and different. Pat could be the catalyst or visionary beyond his present role as unearther of unpalatable truths.

Married life requires partners in union to bring up a family in a loving relationship or where they have no family help and give their time to where help is needed.
I am getting worried about Robert as he seems not to be enjoying married life as he calls it a sacrifice and said it was a chore to be asked by his wife to bring his child to sports. When he brought his child to sports robert went off to chirch to pray. I cannot understand why he did not stay with his child and enjoy seeing his child play and this action is also a form of pray as we give thanks to God for all he has given us.

I honestly believe that Robert Nugent is a selfish, controlling type of guy. The self-righteous usually are. They are always in the right, while everyone else is wrong.

They feel put-upon, misunderstood, under-valued, but, by contrast, they feel superior, too: they are God’s wingman, and on a mission which must have top priority. This, of course, means that THEY must be first in everyone else’s life as well.

They use the word ‘sacrifice’ a lot, usually of themselves.

Well, it’s illegal for a bishop to be walking around showing his stonking hard-on to a young bottom in a gay sauna, according to the Code of Canon Law.

Like

1.52 There is a secret Code of Law for Popes, Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops. Its basic tenet is that if one belongs to any of the aforementioned categories, the Code of Canon Law does not apply. Lol Lol Lol Its not written down…its inscribed on the most intimate bodily part and will only show if there is full blood flow. When limp the word that can be seen is Shit…..when fully blooded up there is a sentence to be read: Shovel them Shit. That is their law and attitude to us all if not in the aforementioned categories. Each ontologically transformed to full orders bears this sentence on that bodily part. It comes with the sacredness of consecration. William Mulvihill

I mean if you have evidence that he behaved inappropriately with children (which is what you appear to suggest), then, why don’t you unburden yourself by releasing it on the blog, for the children’s sake?

Mainly cos of Joe Duffy and the Fr Jack McCabe case, Seamus Hegarty and the Fr Greene case, and knowing now that Freeman was up to high jinks at the same time as putting out a pastoral letter more or less telling people how to vote in the marriage referendum. It is just the sickening complacency of them, jetting off to Rome and living it up in the decadent Irish Colkege where that pic was taken, while back home in their palaces there are filing cabinets stuffed full of files about the abuse they ignored or facilitated. They sit there like buddahs, and all the while they preside over dysfunctional seminaries that keep on churning out bad priests.

Like

Why did the Vatican not require the resignation of every bishop who moved an abuser priest (eg CMOC), or who shredded evidence (eg Weakland and Mahoney) or who gave glowing job references to abusers (as Joe Duffy did for Fr Jack McCabe)?

Like

3:27 Because they were doing as instructed by John XXIII who told them to keep it in house.
Incidentally this becomes clearer when rather than the ‘every’ bishop you refer to which implies it wasn’t all of them, you remember that all bishops did that.
If anyone can name a bishop between 1960 until forced to change by the state or insurance companies, who suspended priests suspected of abuse, reported them to law enforcement and dismissed them from the clerical state, I would love to hear about him.

That was PJ Cowley of Kildare and loughlinn….he was a magnificent diver and the diving board was far too high at that pool….dangerous. He had the body of a Greek God ….he was a few years ahead of me and we always said hello with a sentence or two but there is a story : Niall Ahern had his knife in him in 1st Divine…and guess who warned him: Michael Ledwith. PJ was kicked out of the USA for being illegal…he made it back into the USA in the middle of the night on top of a coal carriage on a coal train from Canada. He left around his 1st Divine year. This means the rector of Knock, Very Rev Gibbons, would know him. This is also the time when Pat R from Cloyne and Dwane H were at it(Give it to me Dwane, give it to me) . The D&C Mother’s Union got their knickers in a twist listening at the wall as Dwane was giving it and reported to Des Connell who was staying there. P J Bonner of Raphoe was there then too. This Freeman bishop would be in danger these days of contracting monkeypox in a gay sauna. It is rife now in the ‘men who have sex with men’ community and is being passed on in gay saunas, dark rooms, cruising spots etc. There is great concern about it, and a big push to get the MSM people vaccinated. Unlike HIV, which has specific modes of transmission, mostly by the virus finding its way in to the bloodstream, monkeypox is much more easily transmissible by skin to skin contact, even from towels, bedding, clothing etc. So, I would counsel MSM people to try and avoid those places where it is being passed on. Purcell and Co will have to put their tackle away for some time until things are safe again. And don’t believe all the nonsense about this not being something that is afflicting the gay community. It is. It is predominantly rife in the gay community. We have to recognise this. And modify behaviour. Please.

I remember once being in Ledwith’s rooms for one of those ecumenical gatherings with visitors re Ballymascanlon. The bould James saw a book of Hans Kung on Ledwith’s shelves. The book was in German, the title “Existed Gott”. James asked Ledwith if this was Kung’s latest book. Ffs! Ledwith looked at him with pity and just said “No”. Even if we hadn’t read it,we all knew “Does God exist?

What a storm this Flurry Gin has caused. I don’t approve of his lifestyle but I don’t think it is unusual. If people here consider it unusual, I suggest you connect to the real world of 2022.
I know of a few cases of priests and sacristans cruising tourists in churches in Italy. I studied at the Biblicum years ago. I know of an Irish tourist who went into the sacristy of Naples cathedral and was propositioned by the sacristan. They had sex in the vestment cupboard. The Irish guy was all remorseful and went to confession immediately. He was a layman from the northwest. The priest asked for the identity of the sexual partner. Unfortunately, he told him, thinking the confessional seal would protect the sacristan. I’m not so sure.
I know of another Irish tourist from Kerry, a seminarian at the time, now a priest, who was propositioned in San Nicola in Bari when visiting the tomb of St Nicholas. A Dominican he asked for some historical information, took him to the back of the church and up one floor to window level. There was an internal passage between the windows and the external wall. He had sex with the Irish tourist in there. Again, this guy was from a traditional family and started to have terrible qualms about having sex inside a church building.
I know of guys who have been contacted on Grindr in Rome by escorts, only to find out that the same escort is also a prominent member of a local confraternity.
I know of altar servers who have sex with priests in sacristies and Roman monastic houses.
I know of monks who go to gay discos and have sex afterwards in private house parties and say Mass at 7.30am.
Flurry’s world is not unique. I try to minister to these people here in Rome where I now work for my order. What is really upsetting is the number of laymen who go through terrible suffering after these sexual adventures.
Just this morning I dropped into a well known church with a fine Caravaggio, on my way to the office. Mass was in progress and the priest had an altar sebery. The server must have been 18 to 20 years old. All through the Padre nostro and after, he was looking around the church at every youngish male tourist who entered. The funniest thing was his hand position, all sanctimonious, while his eyes told a different story.
All I could do was smile to myself. This is our church today. Sadly.
