Readers have been asking me to do a blog about the RCC’s so called Synodal Way.
Since Vatican II the RCC all over the world has been producing thousands upon thousands of reports that eventually ended up gathering dust on shelves all over the world.
It’s always about talking and there is never any action.
“All cackle and no egg”.

The cynical purpose behind the Synodal Way is to invite people to talk, to give them the impression that they are being listened to, that they have a real say, and then to put the report on a shelf and get back to business as usual.
Do you really think the pope is going to share his power with Mrs Murphy of Mulberry Way?
Do you really think that the Roman Curia is going to share its power with the Ballydehob Pastoral Council?
Do you really think that Phonsie is going to ask the Waterford branch of the Association of Catholic Priests to help him govern Waterford?
Do you really think that the papal nuncio is going to allow the progressive lay group – We Are Church – to help him choose bishops?
There is an old saying in Rome: “Do what you want with women, men and children, but never challenge the POWER”.
The RCC is about clerics weilding the power, controlling the money and regarding morality and moral rules for the laity alone.
It’s been like that for at least 15 centuries.
Do you really think that is going to change?
Of course, things on the ground are changing – fewer priests, nearly no seminarians, very few under 60s attending Mass.
This will force certain changes – closing parishes, amalgamating parishes, fewer Masses, laity conducting baptisms, weddings and funerals etc.
But the power and the money will stay in the bishops palaces and the priests houses.
Who knows – in time to come celibacy could be optional and even women could be ordained?
These married and women priests will be allowed to do the donkey work – if there is donkey work to be done.
But the POWER will stay where it is and always has been.
The hierarchs and the clerics have betrayed the People of God.
A number of years ago I visited the death bed of a Belfast man called Gerry Reynolds – a man who was a daily Mass goer, a man who had been a Legion of Mary lay missionary and a long term Catholic youth worker. With tears in his eyes he said: “Our priests and our Church has let us down badly”.

A NEW WAY?
Christianity will survive.
“The memory of Jesus is both sacred and subversive”.
We might see a return to Basic Christian Comminities modelled on the early church?
The clericilization of the Sacraments and especially Holy Orders was a disaster for Faith and Church.
Going forward Catholic Christians will have to revisit that clericalization under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
For God, all things are possible.

Pat, you talked of dwindling attendance at RCC Masses (beyond me why people would go anyway). Though out of interest, what’s the demographic of a usual Oratory service? Young/old? Male/female? Straight/LGBT+? Black/white? Etc.

11.32 why are parishes building new office space when churches three quarters empty at most advertised gatherings. It’s going like the HSE closing down wards & turning them into offices. Is this to house all the new lay management and members of Synod?

11.32 Damn Cheeky question. A big part of the reason people from various demographic do not attend mass is because it gives nosey and predatory priests and their toxic cathbots the mistaken notion they might get away with sticking their penis or their noses where they definitely are most unwelcome. Disgusting to be in church & to be eyed up from the altar by over-interested clerics looking for local fill ins between treks to the priests saunas.

Pat, it’s a shame you didn’t read any material about the Synodal Pathway. I expected you you be your usual cynical self. The seminars and gatherings in parishes were useful and worthwhile. They offered people an opportunity to highlight their concerns, questions and criticisms of much of Church teachings and doctrines. Yes, very radical suggestions were made and hopefully some will be listened to with respect. Change, as we know, in the Church, happens slowly. It’s easy to be cynical but not always easy to respond to a modern world. At the end of the day those of us entrusted with the care of parishes are the ones, along with committed lay people who will effect the pastoral changes necessary to make our parishes more caring, inclusive, welcoming and Christ-like. Thankfully most parishes have people of great calibre and integrity who desire to build up their parish community. This work is ongoing and requires time, prayerful reflection and training when required. The only barrier to creating renewed Christian communities in our parishes is the indifference and cynicism espoused by you. We know only too well that many many people feel betrayed and let down by some priests, not all , and by church leadership. That’s why we need to continue our efforts to ensure the rightful place for all the lay faithful. Though the task is enormous we must trust that we’ll be guided by the Holy Spirit. I think it’s sad that you, Pat, have written this piece so deliberately negative that you’ll get what you desire: similar cynicism and twisted narratives like yours. Perhaps you should gaze your eyes beyond the Oratory gate and acknowledge the great efforts of many parishes to truly KEEP THE SACRED MEMORY OF JESUS ALIVE!!

You are trying to pass off fools’ gold as the real thing.
Complaints have already been made that the so-called ‘National Synthesis’ for England and Wales is very much a tamer representation, by will of the bishops, of the submissions to the Synodal Pathway from local levels.

Absolutely correct Seanie, not only did ordinary catholics have nothing to do with the Synod process, most ordinary priests didn’t get involved either. And why not? Simply because we don’t believe anything will change. In the Irish context, this synod stuff is a smokescreen. I have spent 35 years in ministry and it’s simply getting worse. There might be some laity involvement at parish level but, it goes no further than that. Most catholics have walked away and the bishops still talk about getting them back. Your Lordships……the people are not coming back! The Church is dying, face reality.

Add to that the billions owing to families of deceased victims and to elderly & vulnerable awaiting redress, no wonder the professional classes form a large population within the management & laity already engaged to keep RCC going into the future. For those who wish to continue to engage with the Catholic religion but are determined to see justice served for past wrongs currently ignored & vigorously defended by cabal clergy & their laity, a breakaway church seems inevitable.

I hope the lay management teams understand that they will take the fall for the bishops if there’s trouble in the future.
On the other hand the church functions very much like a rubbish employer. It’s like they’ve noticed people get caught in the factory machines (but only because they’ve paid out so much in compensation) and have thought perhaps they’d better get some health and safety advice.
In their case the bishops don’t realize they couldn’t run a bath, are ffurious the ongoing abuse crisis has shown them up but want to keep the actual power, and the hat and stick, while yet another patsy covers their back.
Usually badly, because they employ people for their loyalty, not their competence.

As for Robert Nugent: has the most negative commenter about a things Catholic. He speaks about his love for the Church yet is rarely present at his local Church’s Eucharist and liturgical .moments. If, as is being suggested and which I very much fear, the contributions of the laity are being moderated / diluted / sexed down etc., then in due course the bishops and the clergy who have done this will have to bear the wrath of the laity. We know what we said, it is in black and white in the contributions from the various parishes, and if that is then being diminished and cleaned up at the diocesan level and then the national level, then Vin and Co need to be very careful. It will be known and people will be very angry. Just a warning of the reality that will take place. I think the Pope knows what is going on and hopefully he will sidestep them all. Vin and Co will not like that. But they have had their day, and look what a mess they have made of it, particularly the egregious sins they have allowed the clergy to get away with over decades, and the excuses they have made in order not to do anything. Their reputations are already shot. Doing the dirty on the synodal responses will just ensure that we wipe them out of memory and history as a bad stink and as cynical, manipulative, ambitious and sinful men. And yes, they are all men… ! Vin and Co, please take note…..

A Dunnes Stores worker has lost his case for unfair dismissal. He was dismissed after Dunnes Stores learned that he had been charged with an offence contrary to the Sexual Offences Act for public masturbation at Marks & Spencer on Mary Street, Dublin in June 2021.
Dunnes Stores manager confirmed that he had made a decision to dismiss the worker because of the damage caused in the eyes of the customer due to the particular circumstances adding that Dunnes Stores is community based and staff and customers live in the adjacent catchment areas. The manager also referred to the Dunnes Stores Conduct:
“We expect staff to maintain proper standards of integrity and conduct and not to do anything which is likely to bring the Company’s reputation into disrepute either during or outside the course of your employment”
The WRC ruled that the dismissal of the Dunnes worker was within the range of reasonable responses open to it and that substantial grounds did exist to justify the dismissal.
Perhaps the Roman Catholic Church could take note & desist from planting deviant clerics into unsuspecting communities worldwide.
