WHY ARE MODERN PRIESTS SO SEXUALLY ACTIVE?

I have the very strong impression that Catholic priests are much more sexually active than in the past.

I know clerics were sexually active in antique and medieval times.

But nowadays we hear if new clerical sexual scandals every single day.

If its not priests abusing children it’s priests showing their genitalia on the internet and looking for sexual “action”.

Or priests masturbating in public!

And perhaps it’s the world wide internet and the ever present media that is letting us know more about these things?

I attended daily Mass from the age of 4. I knew and met an awful of priests.

I cannot imagine the good priests I knew being sexually active – priests like Fr John Hyde SJ; Canon John Pierce and Fr Joe Collins – Ballygall parish, Dublin and Monsignor John Shine, Waterford.

What’s causing the recent and present glut of clerical scandals

1. Priests having less morals than in previous generations?

2. The failure of priestly formation?

3. The influence of the secular, materialistic and permissive society?

4. The Internet and international media?

5. Celibacy no longer being accepted by priests?

6. The work of Satan?

I’d like to readers views on this.

What happens in the church is far more influenced by the society surrounding it (in some ways) than it likes to think. For example in parts of the world where church attendance has collapsed it has collapsed for all churches.
The increased sexual activity could be explained by increased opportunities for sex presented by apps like Grindr so numbers 3 and 4 of your choices, although I’m sure many a priest clocked up huge numbers of partners in cottages and bathhouses years ago.

Possibly, if you read V2 as meaning an aggressively Modernist reading, the called Spirit of Vatican 2. Pope Francis or people around him (a priest handling abuse claims saw his promotion, tho not his role in a dicastery cancelled when Francis or Roche, bankrupter of Leeds heard he used to offer TLM). Radical smashing up of sanctuaries, removing altar rails which weren’t just apostolic but recalled the Temple, smashing up altars and not just moving them forward (it’s meant to be one not a High Altar and separate Table per SC), seminaries which were sinking pre-V2 (Paul Shanley and Brendan Smyth are two notorious pre V2 paedo priests) turned really gay or at least toxic, liturgical chaos etc.
Anyhow if that is taken as a shorthand for unwise interpretations and tendencies, then perhaps V2 could be given as an answer. Card. Montini of Milan spoke clearly in Latin at V2 for the conservative position of Latin ordinary but translated propers and Pater noster, yet went radical as Pope.

It is not just in the church. It is everywhere and it’s probably the internet. Everyone has a phone, everyone has access to porn. Younger people are so far advanced nowadays compared to us. But it is not just in the church. They are products of their times.

Well considering that was the way it was for hundreds of years with packed Churches and no one considered that the clergy were dressing up. Now when they dress down and prance about in the dreaded polyester and perform to empty churches Mass attendance has plummeted that should answer your question.😉

Priests are not more sexually active. Celibacy has never worked. Many peers were known to be steady with their housekeepers. A % were child abusers. A few were homosexuals but too afraid to admit it.
Nowadays why hide with a housekeeper when ye can be happier together elsewhere. The child abusers are gone(ish) but the homosexuals are admitting what they are, and in a generation will follow the example of priests & housekeepers who can be happier elsewhere.
How this is happening is dysfunctional because Maynooth and many other seminaries fail to form the men properly- but the formators are all trained in the same place in the US…. hence the similarity of failure

Dear Pat,
It is important to acknowledge that never before have people lived in such a sexualised society. This includes priests. However, this does not excuse say, a former young priest of Dungannon offering a family member sex in a Dungannon public park. Nor does it excuse the same cleric’s extremely promiscuous behaviour with young gentlemen in the Dungannon area, some of which has made very uncomfortable reading on this blog. It is interesting how the suspect in question has been afforded education in a European university to facilitate accreditation with a PhD; perhaps to pursue a career in academia, draining the coffers of the faithful. Eamon Martin had, it appears, been aware of this priest’s problems for quite some time.
Meanwhile why are schools in Tyrone developing links with this man, and who within the schools is initiating this? What is being hidden? Are gay relationships at play here with school professionals?
Pharmaceuticals, midnight forest adventures, Grindr mishaps… this is the HOR D’OUVRES, Pat.
“Never mistake arrogance for intellect.”
A strong understanding has developed that few among the Armagh clergy are disappointed to see his downfall. It appears he has ‘milked’ the calling for all its worth.

Hi Pat,
there are a number of reasons for this but you have to frame in the context of modern times and social mores, which are now reflected on the church rather than the church dictating anything.
Humans are sexual creatures; we love a bit of it and modernity has simply allowed that to run free. Inhibitions have been thrown aside. Conservative commentators like to blame the media but the media in the west runs with the hare and chases with the hound; it is not the hunter. TV channels like MTV etc have certainly accelerated the sexualization of society but they are simply tapping a well bursting at the seams. I’m in my 50s and even I will choose the local news channel with the nicest ladies; its eye candy and bear in mind I am long past my prime. To see this in action all you need do is visit a large town in Ireland on weekend night; the clothes and social mores are unthinkable from 30 years ago, and that is because the church has been defeated and nature has taken over, as it always does eventually. Women have been liberalized and have no qualms about looking for what they want; LGBTQ society is now largely accepted by all except a few cavemen and the elderly. Ireland was always horny; the priests put a wet blanket on it but now that’s gone. And it is great.
All systems work in equilibrium and the pressure from outside has made the church a good deal hornier, frankly. The issue for the church and priests is that novices are now exposed to more allurements than at any time previously; their heads are turned long before they join the seminary. Homosexuality is still a bit of a titter and joke in the less cultured parts of the country e.g. Kerry so a lot of closet gays are still going to deny their reality and join the priesthood to try bury their urges. Of course they join many other gays in the priesthood – so you have an explosive mix of horny young men all together and therefore there is going to be a lot of sex. Unfortunately for the church it also attracts deviants and paedophiles looking for easy access to children and the vulnerable. But all these urges are external; they are not inherently the churches fault, it is simply nature (in the case of paedos a faulty frontal lobe, apparently). There is no Satan involved.

So, really, there is no such thing as vocation to the priesthood? It’s all a myth put about by these men, because God himself would not have permitted any such configuration?

There is no scope or provision anywhere in the Bible for a priesthood, full stop. Make of that what you will.

Society today is hyper-sexualised, and Holy Mother Church is permeable. Like you Pat, I have fond memories of many holy priests from my years as a novice and scholastic and I just can’t imagine that they would have been sexually active. I have memories of some elderly priests in our order who – in my opinion at the time – were just completely oblivious to everything with regards to sex and women etc, such was the norm at the time. These are chaps who would have been through the mill in the 30s and 40s.
As a novice I had a sexual relationship with a novice sister over a period of two years. I don’t think it did me any harm. I can say that I have been faithful to celibacy ever since – 30+ years. A quick google tells me that she is still a nun in the UK, which tells me that she mustn’t have any issues either.

No offence but I’ve yet to see a nice looking priest, hottest would be Fr Derek Ryan and even he is piling on the pounds lately.

Like

You answered this yourself, Pat, some time ago, and more than once: many priests don’t pray anymore.
They don’t pray, or pray very little, because they no longer feel that they need God. They have cast themselves adrift from him and from his protections, becoming easy prey for their appetites, especially carnal ones.
When a man loses his need for God, the next thing to go is his moral self-discipline. He tells himself: why bother trying any longer? And he let’s himself go. Except it isn’t a letting-go: it’s a falling. And the damage to self, and others, is great, but it is rarely acknowledged by him, because he has become spiritually blind.

It may seem as though priests of the past were more observant and sexually continent. However, I think it has to do with the lack of means, ways and opportunities of observation and uncovering back in those days. Life was so local and contained. News did not get out and about, and could be silenced very easily. The last 30 years have seen an explosion of means and ways of communicating, and this has seen us able to peer in to the recesses of the clerical carcass and to see what is really going on. So, no, I do not think priests of the past were holier or more observant, rather just unknown about. Priests of today carry on in exactly the same ways, but now we know about it. Just as well. When I see a priest I ask myself what they really are up to when they think that nobody is looking ? What is the flip side of the persona they portray in public ? You might think that is unduly cynical, but remember that the clergy have brought this on themselves and have themselves undermined any trust we could have in them by their egregiously scandalous, evil and criminal behaviour. They have lied to us, they have hoodwinked us, they have used us. Why should I not look twice and question what this priest before me is really about and up to ? And, there is usually something……. !

The fake natural law of the church is plainly wrong. When you leave humans to follow their nature we have multiple partners and make alliances in tribes rather than couples. When left to our nature we also create ways to prevent pregnancy and transmission of disease.
When you observe our true nature it is apparent that sex is actually about pleasure and relationships, and the biological imperative to reproduce is only part of it – we’re not beasts.
We have to stop reaching for an unattainable human nature which is suppose to have existed before a notional fall. The Roman church wants us to reproduce as if we were cattle.

Odd! How women betrayed, always can forgive their partner, husband, boyfriend for playing away or, for batting for the other side, but are unable to, or, unwilling to forgive the other participant in the tryst, whether in a straight or gay relationship. Is it possible they are fooling themselves? Some men and women are bisexual and, after all, if adults are involved, “it takes two to tango”.

Bisexuality was the cause of the spread of HIV and AIDS in the 80’s.

Much has been written about priesthood, celibacy and sexuality. Much has been written about the levels of deviant, criminal behaviour among clergy. The question of “why” so much deviant sexual behaviour among clergy is a very necessary question but difficult to answer. All of the reasons given constitute a big part of the problem. I can recall some wonderful priests and religious who inspired greatly. Their lives seemed busy and very ordered and structured. The seminary I trained in gave us a similar training and I felt there were standards and ideals I had to adhere to. Boundaries were absolutely important. There were aberrations but nothing that shocked us in ways that unearthed scandals would subsequently do. It would appear that in more recent decades sexual/celibacy behavioural scandals became more widespread. We continue to understand why this is so. All scandals revealed in recent decades point to the absolute necessity to redefine, change and renew the concepts of being a Church community gathered around Christ, ministry, service, discipleship, priesthood. One of the realities we overlook is that there is little accountability to anyone in priesthood. Once ordained, you literally chart a way that’s either noble, worthy and honourable – nourished by the Eucharist, prayer, scripture – and which is of CHRIST or we settle for less. Rarely are we accountable at the level of the quality and fruits of our work. Rarely are we accountable about our psychological or spiritual well being. Rarely are we assessed about our levels of administration, pastoral and outreach responsibilities. Unless we have a strong inner strength and resilience to what we commit to at ordination, we can just drift and do our own thing. Many of us have a sense of duty and endeavour to be faithful to what is expected of us. We are in very changed times with much to do.

10.00: The issues Pat raises for today ask for necessary dialogue and debate. What are the explanations for so many cases of deviant, unacceptable, egregious, criminal behaviour and sexual abuses by clergy? Therefore, shouldn’t we engage specifically in the questions we need to ask and find some explanations in ways that are helpful, enlightening and constructive, in ways that lay bare the diagnosis and then define a framework of practical and enforceable solutions. This is a profound issue and is vital for an entire syntheses to be understood and implemented. Before any solutions we must name the entire reality of priesthood and celibacy, leadership and clerical sexual abuses. Why? How? What must we do? Naming wrongdoing and wrongdoers is essential and has happened. This blog has done this, sometimes cruelly and nastily, yet necessary. We know now have sufficient information and revelations to warrant urgent action. I’m not sure that your daily contributions are conducive to this dialogue and debate. Are your allegations and innuendos and implied judgments conducive to constructive debate? As the day unfolds you generally contribute many irrelevant and disconnected comments, often responding to yourself and correcting grammar and spellings! Can you be constructively critical by offering “solutions”? Today’s issues are crying out for answers and solutions not a jigsaw of verbiage. I hope Pat will moderate the blog today, unlike yesterday when, by afternoon to evening, it was transformed into a horrow show!! And some people must have grieved with hurt and humiliation!

Then a comment that I posted it to CTS re ‘ gay parade’ which wasn’t posted cos tad too sensitive for them.
Starting to think that he (jesus) didn’t started rcc.
Reasons :
Cardinal isn’t biblical. Started around 9th C.
Celibacy is a discipline. Started around 11th C to prevent woman claiming properties as such (from their husbands).
Marriage was there long before rcc. Look at a wedding in Cana re bible.
Baptism started with John the Baptist long before rcc.
Apostolic succession not possible cos there was a break in between plus schism with the orthodox church in 10?
Tradition which can be changed or altered over time by man which is Pope. Its a man made one.
Finally, too much legalism in rcc had me saying that isn’t coming from God. Cos no love.
I learned this from deceased Donegal Catholic healer, who said where is faith in rcc?
Bishops kicked him out to hotel conference rooms, halls, small rooms et al. He isn’t perfect but something he said re bishops and priests don’t preach the dangers to faith such new age therapies and healing etc. Spies for bishops didn’t like it when they heard him saying it. There were stories of abuses going back to early 1920’s in rcc. But in Cabra, I heard stories of it as well, going back up to 1930’s. But I would assume that it went back a lot further to 1700’s re rcc abuses.

Its not just vat 2 re decline. Fr Smyth was ordained in pre vat 2 as he was first reported in Germany in 1965 by a certain Bruno Mulvhill. He went on and on until it caught up with him in North Ireland and ROI as well.

Lot of abusers like mc Carrick who was ordained in pre Vatican 2. It doesn’t end there cos it punched a massive hole in rcc and America where long term reputational damage are deeply felt. First it started with Boston then cardinal Law and then mc Carrick. When will it ever stop🤷‍♀️😉.

In the same way, Bishop casey whose sexual prowess went wherever he went to. Bishop Casey punched a massive hole in RCC IRELAND and its reputational damage which was deeply felt in longer term and its consequences as well. I wonder bec jesus never said a word re sex or homosexuality in the bible nor did the Bible mention that jesus met people of same sex orientation. Was it omitted from the bible 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️.

Now its a full blown one, nearly everybody is doing it, not all of them though except for practising homosexuals even up to a rank of cardinals.

Bishops or cardinals have themselves to blame for cos

1. They allowed homosexual seminarians to be ordained.

2. With that knowledge, Bishops knew that homosexual seminarians turned into priests now will have sex somewhere in some places of their liking. So bishops knew it in the 1st place as they allowed it to flourish. They didn’t even try to stop it, just keep it within rcc walls as long as they behave etc.

Instead they go off preaching anti gay sermon to prove their credentials. KOB for one, freeman from diocese of Ossory et al.

3. No accountability, no responsibility so they can do whatever they like. Hence the exposure knowing that they will get away with it. Cos they will be protected by their bishops at all costs.

4. As young boy I didn’t understand the word ‘evil’ nor didn’t know that word until I was in my teens. I recognised that some nuns were evil in their actions even though I didn’t understand it at first until many years later. That led me to realise that there was NO OVERSIGHT at all whatsoever re evil actions done by rcc. Not even mc Quaid cos he hadn’t thought of it in the first place back in 1970.

Decline of rcc goes way back a lot longer than we think. Nobody really knows it, to be honest with ya.
Is it Bugini and 1955 holy week? That’s where the cracks started to appear🤔🤦‍♀️
OR
Invention of technologies such as TV that brought it on re decline and loosing of morals et al. Blogs such as this or twitter of one certain Andrew Madden.
OR
child rape had been known for some time but it wasn’t exposed until Internet came in or books published such as Yallop, malachi Martin or Paddy Doyle. I heard stories of rape in Cabra as it goes back to 1930s even beatings as well. But it was shrouded in total secrecy. Hence rcc sheer addiction to secrecy cos of the pain of excommunication. Total secrecy by rcc was broken by leaks of their forbidden activities, it gotten more and more exposed as time went by. What I mean by forbidden activities aka fornication, double lives, nobody knows what’s inside the church walls after 6pm etc.
Or
Mass formation hypnosis by rcc (see pics of 1930s and 1940s, packed church or packed to rafters re outside Mass). Mass formation hypnosis broken by information technologies or something else that we don’t know.
I think although I could be wrong there, decline in rcc goes way back pre vat 2, way way back in much slower glacial pace before it went all boom via technology . Child rape was there around 1500s but no documentation etc. Cos of total obsession to their secrecy. Once their secrecy is broken, information starts to flow out.
Rcc started covering it up re their gaps or exposed to their flaws such as celibacy in 1100AD to ensue money was coming in and NOT out of their coffers. It was all about money was it? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I agree, the most radical change in all of human history was the Printing Press…only outflanked by the rediscovery of electricity which changed everything. It is all about to change again with the lack of it. Bill

Actually William, yes, I hadn’t thought of Latin. So perhaps there is a third one – when Latin ceased to be necessary for any education in the twentieth century.

You know, I don’t care if priests are sexually active. As long as they are honest and open about it. However, given that they belong to an organisation that still requires them to be celibate, and they connive in that nonsense, then when they are sexually active they are being hypocritical and living a lie. That’s the problem. And that is why I cannot have any respect for them. If a priest is honest and says that he wants a sexual relationship, and does the right thing and gives up the priesthood, then I would give him major respect. As it stands, when I see a priest I know that what I am seeing is not the truth or reality and that what I am seeing is a living lie. How do you expect me to have respect for that ? Any priest who complains that he is being wrongly judged, then I say, it is now time for you to prove it. Because, we know that the likelihood is that you are living a lie and we have had to put up with your duplicity for too long. So, the onus is now on you to show us that you are honest, can be trusted, and your private life is the same as your public professed life. How many would be willing or able to do that ? Sign up for a life of celibacy, live a life of celibacy, and stop lying to us. Or get out. We are not fools.

Noddy thought he could change the narrative by circulating messages to the masses. Naughty Noddy. Why couldn’t you keep it under your tight belt? For the same reason you couldn’t keep your nob under it? There are pills for impulse control Noddy. Ask the druggist. The self professed witch is on her broomstick now and flying high because of your blunder. There will be no happy ending in this story Noddy. Deal with it.

Just as priest now = nonce in the popular perception, so now it equals liar for anyone who knows the reality as revealed on this blog.
Their very calling and clothing means they are celibate but we know the majority are not. This is how we know they’re all liars.
I agree with the comments above that the priest and nun should both have left.

Just a little frim Plato for your consideration. All the “raimeis” you spill out so frequently is not the elucidation from a “wise man”….so….!! You are best qualified to answer that question surely! Why we you sexually active as a priest and why are you still sexually active?

By his admission, the late KOB was ‘at it’ throughout his adult life, so it is not a new phenomenon among priestly queers today. The disgraced former prior of Silverstream is another example, and, in more recent times, the disgraced former abbot of Mt Melleray was, as we all know, also hard ‘at it’.

@4.41pm You have revealed yourself as a person with much prejudice. Why did you interpret Pat’s discussion as a reference to homosexuality? It is not. Heterosexual sex is as much a feature of priestly life. Your prejudice has drawn you express a very partial view – a prejudicial view. The problem is the changing relevance of celibacy for all priests, hetero and homosexual priests. Once hidden, sex is now more puiblic and that has led to less care about sexual relationships in which priests engage. Please research your ideas before exhibiting them here in such a prejudicial way. Think again and please refrain from spreading nonsense.

Pat honest question deserving an honest answer…. Were you sexual active while ministering to us in St Peter’s?
I do believe and very much knew you were gay back then and in different relationships. It was back then frowned upon to dare mention it, thankfully now no Priest has that grip or rein that was had back in the days!

The comment you’re replying to indicates that priests clearly don’t expect priests to be celibate. It’s not even in the possible arena.

As a general rule the more vociferous and hard line and seemingly orthodox bishops and clergy are about issues of sexuality (in fact about any sexual / moral issue), the less they are to be believed. KOB would bash anybody on the head with his crozier and bible over sexuality, and yet at the same time he was shagging around all the time. It’s a defence, a transference, a tactic to put people off the scent. But, we know better now. So, watch what you say, dear clergy ! We are on to your !

He was a good man. The church is made up of many people and organisations it is global so can be difficult to keep tags on everything. The Internet is corrosive and destroying society. American corporations are making massive profits but destroying the soul. I rest my case.
