When I was a curate in Kilkeel in County Down, the housekeeper came into the kitchen and told me there was a very distressed woman at the door looking for me.
It was a parishioner I knew well – a lady in her 40s – a university graduate, an accomplished artist and a daily Mass attender.
She had a plastic bag with her.
Inside the bag were the sheets from her two sons beds.
The sheets, she said, were stained as her two sons were masturbators.
I politely refused to examine the sheets.
I also declined her invite to visit her home and lecture her sons on the Biblical sin of Onanism.
She was 100% convinced her two sons were bound for Hell.
She cried bitterly.
Sadly, she was one of those Irish Catholics who had been brought up in the 1930s and 1940s and told that the worst sins of all were sexual sins.
She believed that one act of unconfessed masturbation brought you to Hell for all eternity.
I had a long talk with her, recommended some reading, and tried to lead her to a more enlightened and relaxed view of the topic.
I don’t think she ever came to a “modern” view.
Not so long ago a Down and Connor priest – Fr Paddy Devlin – had a big part of his parish website devoted to Onanism.
He was offering young men help and support.
His headline went something like this:
“Young men – if you are having a problem with masturbation don’t lose heart. Talk to me. A helping hand ✋️ is waiting”.🤣
I named Paddy – Belfast’s Apostle of Chastity.
Robert Nugent is also very worried about men masturbating.
Once, Woody Alan was asked if masturbation was a sin. He answered:
“Only if its not done properly”.

All sounds very weird, strange and crazy. The human body is complicated in some way but it’s what we have, what we live in and we cannot disconnect the various strands and levels that form who we are. Sadly the beauty of the human body is distorted all too easily. Sexually we are intertwined with various trigger points, sensitive areas and bodily parts which specifically give and enhance sexual ferlings and moods, iften taking us to moments of ecstasy. I believe that the human body in its glory is beautiful. What destroys the gift of our body’s sexuality, in not so much the antics of crazy mams or dads who want to detach sexual drive in young children. This sexual exploits behaviour of kids and young people is normal: they need reassurnace. What would instead give these parents and Robert Nugent and others worthwhile Video matter for conversation is to bring awareness to young children of their vulnerability against prowling abusers, against weirdos in their playgrounds, against men who offer sweetie bags. It would be far more productive if these “concerned mothers” and the likes of Robert Nugent targeted the filthy porno promoters, suggestive advertisements that sexualise little ones..and to condemn so the daiky if the gift of the human body through unrestricted sexual desires. Sadly parents know their children are in danger in our world and feel they must protect them from a mad feminist ideology which tells their yiungbgurks “you can do what you like and have what you like…”. Regrettably these ideologies ate dangerous for chikdren. Eternally dangerous. Either we present kids with s healthy relationships programme to educate them or we trust or should insist that PATENTS are the only true teachers. Proper sex and relationship programmes must be part of a school syllabus, again age appropriate. Parental consent is vital and must be respected. It’s a feature of our society today that children are sexualized at far too early an age. We are blurring the lines all too frequently for children over sexuality and miral values. It must be a nightmare for parents to monitor their children’s activities, especially on the internet and other facilities. Sadly 12/13/14 year olds have unfettered access to extreme sites, as we read about in extreme violence against women when committed by young men. The experimenting sexual projects on 6/7/8 year old children is scary, unethical and very immoral. Adults are playing “god” with children’s confusions. Think Tavistock centre, England. We must protect our children from extreme ideologies of all kinds.

I went to a boys boarding school in the Kilaloe diosese. I remember when Fr. T***** in a religion class, whinwas frequently obviously drunk, (10am) decided to shame my whole class of 20+ boys that we were ALL “pulling your Willie’s off every day” and were sinning! we were all 13 or 14, and he was right! But he was getting off on shaming us! I am glad I’m not religious for many reasons, but I would hope that is not the case in religion classes anymore

Did contact therapist as he said he stoppped doing it anymore. He doesn’t have a slot. That was post Covid as I guess he is in retirement mode as he’s done over with.
So now I would be reviewing my options and re read that book by Bessel VDK.
I don’t think towards healing have a therapist like him trained under Peter Levine.
Alternative is a clinical psychologist with a speciality in BSL in UK. she’s trained on deaf mental health. What I like is that she have emdr certificate with BSL skill. I don’t know if that will work for me or not. Cos every person is different even deaf person.
I might prefer a combination of emdr, sensorimotor and biofeedback (all mentioned in book).

No I didn’t ask but still awaiting his reply. I don’t know what will he say after I explained my position to him re 36 months of no therapy. Although, I’m OK, no nightmares, just bits of hyperviligance here and there at times plus irrational fear which was very recently. I deduce it to be the source of my ptsd cos it hadn’t changed one bit if I changed a little bit to see what reaction will I get. Same reaction.
So anyway I have 2 psych’s report which was enough for me and also in addition to that, most psych have no real experience of ptsd except for their medical knowledge and training et al. Imagine them in my position, I’m sure they wouldn’t know how to deal with it. Bessel van der Kolk gave me some insight of what works and what doesn’t work etc,depending on person makeup and his or her abuse experience to date.
Suppose If I won the lotto, I would go straight to that UK psychologist plus bodyworker whose fee range from 150e(minimum) to 300e (maximum). I liked that bodyworker cos what I saw for myself was effectively good for reducing mental sensory overload etc.

Its old name for national association for the Deaf whose board of directors including teachers who covered up abuse plus chief justice of supreme Court in 1970s. A parent with a deaf child from St Mary’s school for deaf girls, who went to him re allegation of abuses as they covered it up for a Vincentian priest from cork whose name was printed in the Ryan report.
NAD now called’ Chime’ was never to be trusted again cos its the bigwigs ranging from chief justices of supreme courts to famous business people, who covered it all up as they weren’t acting in the interest for parents with a deaf child. They only need money as that’s it. Hence few supreme court justices on board of directors just to bring in money, nothing to do with abuse. That’s why I never trusted Chime as lot of older deaf folks don’t trust Chime, period.

finding out who if anyone provides the psychotherapy service you are seeking. Ivor Browne is good, more enlightened than most. It might be worth checking with psychotherapy associations in Ireland asking if
they can help. If you search BSL deaf community psychotherapy a
number of providers in the UK come up in the search. You’re right re
psych and ptsd as well as underlying issues such a trauma, etc. I completely understand your reservations re. voluntary organisations,
big wigs on boards and the goings on in such organisations. Been
there, dumped that carry-on. Members are treated like cannon fodder keeping an assortment of people in jobs or positions on boards spouting what great work is done while little or nothing changes at grassroots. I’ve come across Frank Lake and Gregory Bateson. Another guy worth checking out on neuroplasticity is Dr. Daniel Siegel. A go fund me is the way to go, DG.

I froze (a little) because of my parents’ own earlier hard life then strange goings on at my secular school, then over the years very strange churches catholic & protestant. Par for the course on planet earth, as a matter of fact. Most people don’t notice what has been done to them. We can look ourselves in the eye because we’re ahead of the curve. I would prefer to Dr ivor Browne than Dr Aidan Collins on any day of the week. Cos I like some bit of his radical ideas as regards to approaches to ptsd therapies.
If done by medical training such as Dr aidan Collins, which means pills which I don’t like it. Cos ptsd was started and caused by events outside of our control, not pills or tablets.
What woke me up was Fritof Capra book, Gregory bateson, their discussion on various thing such mental health as brain exhibits some of its plasticity and adaptness. Hence again bit of quantum physics, God and transcendental.
There was one other method which im interested was Frank Lake, his ideas was interesting. That’s for another time for discussion when and only if win the lotto etc.

Today an immense outpouring of painful grief was evident at St. Men’s Cathedral, Longford for the funeral mass of 2 beautiful children who died tragically while their mother lay seriously ill in hospital. Last week a similar event took place in a Tallaght parish in the tragic deaths of 3 siblings. The nation mourns with all families and parishes pray for all in deep grief. Horrendous tragedies have occured in our country involving children, leaving parents, families and Parish communities in deep, painful grief. The local clergy have shone with immense kindness, pastoral sensitivity and compassion. They all spoke profound, meaningful, consoling words..Of course those of us in parishes know the real pain of others and In thank God for guiding our words and kindness always. Yet, here today on this blog most of the comments are about perverse sex…A strange world you all inhabit.

a feature of life. Are you aware of the response of priests to victims of clerical sex abuse in Donegal outlined by Martin Ridge in his book, ‘Breaking the Silence’ ? Are you aware of the numbers of deaths, sudden deaths and adverse effects from the covid vaccine which was endorsed by Pope Francis who claimed taking the vaccine is ‘an act of love’ ?

The Archdiocese of Armagh have no objection to masturbation. In fact, Archbishop Martin is happy with his clergy, namely Father Ryan McAleer, prescribing it as a means to de-stress. We take our gaze off what s relevant, of eternal worth and cast our lot with all things earthly. We travel on a pathway, its destiny uncertain. We have, as human beings, to rediscover the Divine again in all things. Our church has failed us, our civil leaders have disappointed, our heros and heroines are few. Where are the poets to give us new vision, the scriptures to inspire, the holy ones to lead us? What are we each doing? God help us all.

In event of simple pleasures in life pay them forward in generosity towards others in prayers, space, words of “corraggio”, a visit, etc. Well I remember my pal in young years who had time for a whole bunch of us waifs and strays among his peers, and light hearted wit, I hear he became a (secular) teacher, a wonderfully fitting career for a generous soul, his reward will be eternal.

Given that Paddy Devlin is a complete buffoon why would anyone ever listen to him. . The man is one of the biggest actors ever as a priest. Much happiness in ligoniel now that he has left us.
