A priest along with the former parish administrator of a Catholic church in Florida funneled nearly $1.5 million in parishioners’ donations into a secret bank account for personal use, Vero Beach police said Tuesday.
The former pastor of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach, Father Richard “Dick” Murphy, died on March 22, 2020, at the age of 80. The administrator, 69-year-old Deborah True, “turned herself in” to the Indian River County Jail in Vero Beach on Sept. 19, police said in a statement posted on the Vero Beach Police Department’s Facebook page.
The Diocese of Palm Beach contacted the police department in December 2021, raising concerns about a fraudulent bank account and the misappropriation of church funds that took place over the course of five years.

The vice president of the German bishops’ conference said Thursday he had thought about resigning after the publication of a report claiming he mishandled abuse cases, but that he had ultimately decided against it.
A report published Sept. 20 said Bishop Franz-Josef Bode mishandled abuse cases in the Diocese of Osnabrück, in northwestern Germany, which he has led since 1995.
The 600-page interim report is titled “Sexual violence against minors and vulnerable by clergy in the Diocese of Osnabrück since 1945.”
The report said in the first decades of his term, Bishop Bode “repeatedly” kept people accused of abuse in office or appointed them to other positions, including management tasks in youth pastoral care.

Sexual scandal grabs our attention more than financial scandal but financial scandal runs deep in the RCC and this is where secrecy and cover up run riot.
The weekly collection is the source and summit of a priests working life – skimming off the top widespread regardless of the smokescreen of greater regulation.
An institution that sexually abuses children and covers it up is well capable of other miscreant acts especially theft, swindle, deception etc.

It happens all the time. How do you think that priests are able to live such nice, comfortable lives with their big cars and their Canary Island / Florida holidays/ trips to Rome ? They don’t do that on their stipends and mass offerings ! Yep, it may not be putting the hand in to the collection plate and taking cash these days, but there are lots of other ways to siphon off money before it is fully accounted for. Clergy are ever resourceful in these matters, as they have been in the past in getting their end away. Still do. Now, what about the bishops ? They have access to a great deal more and can largely do what they want with it because nobody will challenge them. There’s a whole story to be told there. Just needs somebody to do some digging. Then it will all come tumbling out. And it will one day. Like the PP Dick Murphy in Florida, it would be better to be dead and buried when that day comes.

My parish priest in Michigan in 2000 had an official stipend of $22,000 a year. But he reckoned that, with pension rights, expenses, car costs, house, etc it was effectively nearer $70,000. My post below points you to a brilliant article on US clergy fraud by Michael Ryan. Tasty little extras include:
1. Walking around money. Maybe $200 a week directly from the collection before it is counted. Hey, it is only petty cash, but it’s still $10K a year tax free.
2. Skimming. Maybe $1,000+ a week, extracted from unguarded collection before it is counted. It all adds up. This is probably how the late Father Walter Benz of Pennsylvania got $1.3 million over 26 years from 1972 to 1998. Wisely, he fessed up on his death bed. Get absolution, but no gaol time!
3. Outright theft and/or very heavy skimming. Like the guy at St Thomas Moore in Detroit. He diverted a large legacy. Or Fat Eddie Arsenault in New Hampshire, who stole from more than one source.
Plainly this is dodgy. Light skimming is far safer, provided you are not too greedy. Who knows if the collection should be $15K or $16K a week? If all the parish costs are covered and there are reserves in the Bank, who will suspect anything? But, if you are like the trusted lady administrator who skimmed $8K out a $12K weekly collection, the whole parish goes to rack and ruin and eventually someone gets suspicious.
4. Minor or major corruption. Some times merely distasteful. Put your local undertaker’s beautiful calendars out on the back table at the church. Undertaker includes you on his company golf club membership.

The T-Shirt has a humorous side to it. But, it also has a very serious message. I doubt if the increase in the Nationalist / Catholic population has been by some design, probably rather it has just happened because of socio-economic and cultural elements in NI. However, it will put the wind up the Unionist side because they will see themselves as being overtaken / inundated by the other side. It doesn’t take too long or too many generations for this kind of thing to happen. Population growth can be exponential. In GB the same phenomenon is happening. Immigrant populations are growing, indigenous populations are diminishing. Again, it is mostly just happening without any design, but in some populations / communities there is definitely a plan using birth rate as a means. In particular in the Muslim population. Islam is a crusading and prosletyzing religion that has the aim of making the whole world Islamic, and views those who are not Muslims as outsiders and infidels. Many Muslims view birthrate as a means to that end, some quite explicitly. The isolation and separation of Muslim communities from the mainstream, often encouraged by Islamic community leaders themselves who view the rest of society as defiled, helps this trend. Their community / population continues to grow exponentially, along with their accompanying ideology / religion. I would suggest that this does not bode well for the future of GB society, and it might be time to take note of it before it is too late. I do not suggest a backlash, rather what should have been done all along and failed to be done, namely sensible encouragement to integrate and to become part of the the host community / nation’s values and life. Instead, successive governments have just let immigration happen with little direction, so that we have large swathes of the country where very different cultures, languages and values exist which are not compatible with the host nation / community culture and values. That is a recipe for disaster. Just a thought !

When the Roman Catholic church allows it’s clergy to marry (that is the 25% who are heterosexual, although homosexual couples now have surrogate children.) they, can start breeding like rabbits, until that phenomena occurs, let the Roman Catholic clergy mind their own business, of course, they claim it is their business, a low population of Catholics doesn’t do any good for the Catholic church coffers, no wonder the Catholic church promotes the idea of large families, with less money coming in, it much give great cause for concern, to the Catholic hierarchy. The crux of the matter is their easy and, comfortable lifestyle is threatened, they might have to cut back, like the rest of us, that must seem absolutely abhorrent to them.

So bishop Bode thought about doing the right thing but decided not to for reasons? The usual. Sticky fingered Fr Dick Murphy and friend also fall under that heading of ‘the usual.’ At least another Fr, or rather Mgsr has upheld the Murphy family name and a bit of the honour of the priesthood (tho that be rather scarce thanks to all those bishops and priests who pissed away the repute of priests won in Penal times), so congrats to him.
Honestly not sure about the Catholic majority thing meaning too much given the portion who are indifferent to national issues or perhaps a certain number identify with the UK. Any northern Catholic who is old should honestly fear the shameful and shameless taxis to work for its manager HSE taking charge of their healthcare. Mother Ireland getting back her fourth green field would seem nice and worthy, but three of them aren’t too well looked after. SF probably finds the Stormont salaries and present lack of responsibility pleasant.

Theft from church funds has been going on for decades. Usually a diocese will take even simple precautions only after a massive loss – like the priest in Lansing Michigan who stole millions to build a magnificent mansion. This was an unusual case as the priest usually wants the money to fund his mistress or boyfriends. Michael Ryan’s excellent article from years ago shows what a deep rooted problem it is and how bishops are so reluctant to tackle it. In some cases the bishop himself is the crook. Like Archbishop Weakland of Milwaukee who stole 450k dollars to pay off his blackmailing ex-boyfriend.
