The Guardian
A 90-year-old Catholic cardinal and five prominent pro-democracy campaigners have pleaded not guilty in court in Hong Kong for failing to properly register a humanitarian fund they set up to help people arrested in anti-government protests in 2019.
Cardinal Joseph Zen, one of Asia’s highest-ranking Catholic clerics, and his fellow campaigners were arrested in May for “colluding with foreign forces” under a national security law that Beijing imposed on Hong Kong to crack down on dissent. All were trustees of the 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund, which provided legal and financial assistance to more than 2,000 people prosecuted for their part in the 2019 pro-democracy protests. The fund is charged with not properly registering under the societies ordinance, a colonial-era law from 1911.
The fund disbanded in 2021 after police ordered it to hand over information on its donors and beneficiaries.
Prosecutors on Monday told West Kowloon court that the fund, which drew about 270m Hong Kong dollars (£32m) in donations between June 2019 and October 2021, had “political motivation” and supported anti-government groups and activists, local news portal 01 and public broadcaster RTHK reported.
PAT SAYS
Pope Francis and the Vatican have turned their back on poor Cardinal Zen (90) in order not to annoy the Chinese Communist government.
Cardinal Zen went on trial on Monday for his role in helping those opposed to the behaviour of the Chinese government in Hong Kong.
Its another example of how the RCC intervenes in politics – and always on the side of powerful and corrupt.
China has given the Vatican a lot of money after doing a deal with them a few years ago.
And, in spite of this deal the Chinese continue to imprison and persecute many Catholic bishops, priests and laity loyal to Rome.
The RCC played a negative role in Irish politics for many decades.
Francis himself stands accused of working with the Junta in Argentina.
They did deals with Mussilini, Franco and Hitler.
The abandonment of Cardinal Zen is a disgrace.

Pat, as my Mother would say, that’s the thanks you get………..
“Harden not your heart, as in the provocation”.
It is very hurtful when you have done your best to help your friend in his hour of need, and all you get is a slap in the face, don’t fall into the trap of calling him names, or anything else in return, one of the hardest thing to do is keep his countenance through the ordeal.

According to Dr Barbara Lowe, ‘do everything with a good heart and expect nothing in return, and you will never be disappointed.’
Yes, with a good heart, but expect nothing in return? And you will never be disappointed?
Even Jesus expects a return. Witness the healed ten lepers and the fact that only one returned to thank him. Jesus wasn’t happy about the other nine.
As for never being disappointed, I have been both disappointed and hurt by people to whom I did much good, over many years, only to have them turn on me.
That quotation from Lowe is the kind of unthinking, Pollyannaish poster I’d expect to find on the bedroom wall of an equally unthinking, naive, Pollyannaish first-year university student.

Let him go Pat, it’s really all for the best. Some people like Bill have to really hit rock bottom and lose all their friends before they decide to help themselves and get back on their feet again. Just be glad you didn’t give him 16,000 euros and £1,500 to squander. At least you know not to pay out for him to stay in a hotel again. Cut loose Pat.

3.44: Pat, the outcome of your liaison with Bill was precisely as I predicted three weeks ago. You kept him on board for too long. You ought to have prevented his presence on this blog. I got caught once in a similar situation with someone who fell on hard times. His ability to manipulate my emotions was masterful. I gave much financial support, material goods and accomodation to him when things were rough. I gradually saw the pattern, like Bills, but continued to help him. After more than a year I was emotionally and mentally exhausted. It was difficult to let go of his presence. I got therapy for him..Gave money to him frequently….I went on a retreat for a few days and kept my distance for the 5 days….I prayed for him during those days. On return from retreat I received a call to inform me of a most distressing outcome. To this day my mind disturbs me that I ever was entangled in his life. I carried huge guilt. I had to seek counselling. I have learned much through this sad experience. Sometimes we have to be ruthless with manipulative people because they play games and can end up bringing us down!! Pat, be wise. Be careful.

Sometimes I compare prices online in the UK with ROI.
Currently in Tesco a 70cl bottle of Grants Scotch Whisky costs €28.00 (£25.14) in ROI compared to £14.00 in the UK.
Even with minimum unit price (MUP) on alcohol in Scotland you can still buy it for £14.00.
£11.14 is a sizeable difference. No wonder people from the south shop in the north.

The trend of kowtowing to the Chinese – no recent thing either – is out of control and will have serious ramifications for the whole planet. That the RCC are at it is no surprise, happening since day 1 with dictatorships of all stripes including Italian Facism, Nazi Germany and Franco’s Spain. That said the ROC is just as bad endorsing both Chechen and Ukrainian invasions.
China is not a rogue state, it’s a rogue continent with degrees of freedom not much better than North Korea. The entire population are brainwashed and think everywhere from Taiwan to Chinatown in Craggy Island belongs to the PRC, regardless of what the locals think. The minute everyone goes out of their way to buy Chinese junk then the country is finished. Wont happen though.
As for Francis there is every chance not only was he active Junta but possibly CIA as well.

I know I shouldn’t laugh, maybe if the Roman Catholic church paid their clergy a proper salary, there would be less thieving.
Have you read of the partners in crime, Father Murphy from Wexford in a parish in Florida, both Murphy and his female assistant Deborah True between them stole 1.5 million dollars from Roman Catholic Parishioner’s contributions. Murphy is dead and, True is facing the music on her own, she is charged with embezzlement, at least she won’t have any debts to worry about when she languishes in prison, whilst Murphy is wafting away, In heaven of course! Probably because recently it appears a friend gave Bill 16,000 euros and another gave him £1,500. Instead of using the money for a deposit on a flat with some rent up front and sorting himself out he is squandering it. He is probably off with his ideas of grandiose again and telling the staff he is a business man on his way to wait for it – France then on to Germany then a flight to OZ and you know what, the staff will probably believe him.

We can only hope that the deafening silence from Francis, is in fact a ploy to not aggravate the situation, therby making life more difficult for the old man Cardinal Zen, the trial is for political misdemeanour, tied up with the humanitarian fund which was not registered, during the antigovernment protests in 2019-20, enough said! It is not based on religion, although life for Roman Catholic clergy is very regimented, even the Chinese government elect the Catholic Bishops, there are around 12 million Catholics in China a very small % of the population.

It’s a very sordid business. Perhaps the Chicoms are paying a deal of money, as some suspect. Ironically the then Fr Zen introduced the New Order of Mass to mainland China in the early 80s using a Taiwanese printed Mass missal. Before that the Patriotic Catholic Association were using whatever liturgy was in place as of 1949. Now mostly the New Mass prevails, except where the Patriotic Catholic Assoc provide the traditional Mass for older folk. This trial will result in some fine, but a bit like Putin’s Russia, rather than use some dramatic sentence against a foe, they’re ground down by administrative means, this or that trial or question on small matters again and again. Now the sense of doing that isn’t even clear as the trial is notorious internationally. Taking control of the Underground Church is something the Chicoms haven’t done. Therefore if Francis wanted, he has plenty of leverage, but the Pope is choosing not to use it in pursuit of renewing a terrible deal.
