UNI STUDENTS AND NURSES SLEEPING IN THEIR CARS !!!

https://www.independent.ie/business/budget/im-living-out-of-my-car-because-i-cant-get-accommodation-for-college-42022616.html

After sending more than 150 emails to landlords and receiving just two replies, a 21-year-old student is living out of her car in Galway city as her search to find accommodation has become dire.

University of Galway student Jessica McGirr said the Budget 2023 measures that have been announced for students are positive, but they don’t help to address the issue that there are very few rentals available in the country.

She welcomes that the student contribution fee has been reduced by €500, saying it will especially benefit students whose parents don’t qualify for the SUSI grant but they pay their own fees.

BBC

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-62075582.amp

A student nurse has said he has slept in his car between work placement shifts to try to avoid the rising cost of fuel.

Jake Benjamin Smart is a mental health student nurse at Ulster University’s Magee campus in Londonderry.

The third-year student is calling on the Department of Health to increase the travel allowance paid to students.

Health Minister Robin Swann announced an increase in payments for most health and social care workers last month.

In a statement, the Department of Health said they are reviewing the mileage rate to be paid to students for the next academic year, starting in September.

Speaking to BBC Radio Foyle, the third-year nursing student said that himself and many of his peers are struggling during the cost-of-living crisis.

PAT SAYS

We are really in trouble when our uni students and our nurses are reduced to sleeping in their cars as they can’t find a place to rent and the rent to pay for it.

All homelessness is a very distressing problem.

And it’s on the increase.

The primary responsibility for this lies with the government.

The government needs to ompose fines on the owners of empty properties.

They should also impose rent caps on landlords.

The right to shelter is a basic human right

The Churches, including the RCC should not be allowed to have big empty properties.

Jesus did say:

“I was a stranger and you made me welcome”.

The housing crisis is absolutely shocking and so miserable for young people. It looks increasingly unlikely that my younger children will ever be able to afford to buy their own home although they are educated with average salaries.

11.34 yes, I agree, it’s completely demoralising to see these multiple landlords, many such landlords also esteemed members of church faithful, yet shamelessly being supported by church whilst they feeding off the most vulnerable members of Irish society.

11.50 we’ve been married for 3 years, on the face of it have 2 good jobs, unlike many of our friends, we chose to have a small wedding as we were saving for a deposit on a modest house in our town but the combination of increases on our rent coupled with ever rising house prices and to cap it all, our landlord has thrown in the towel & our rental now up for sale, we are seriously looking at being homeless in the coming months. It is beyond comprehension to the point where we may have no option but to emigrate to avoid homelessness and if that happens, we won’t be able to afford to return permanently to Ireland, we thought we’d be starting a family by now but living in Ireland this is impossible in our current circumstances due to this housing crisis. Thank you for bringing this up, we normally read this blog to support friends that you help and we hope that Bill and you make friends again. Seems a shame the poor guy joined the priesthood in the first place, he seems a decent, very witty and intelligent man and my wife and I are rooting for him and others on your blog.

Our parochial house has been vacant since the priest moved up the road with his boyfriend. You can never get in contact with the secretary either, she works 2 hours a week.

Like

Let’s just say she’ll get accommodation. This is a sort of publicity stunt. The mess lies with the horrible and incompetent government. Accepting nearly unlimited illegal migration and housing them (no homeless in the 26 are Nigerians or similar, almost all Irish and some East Europeans), giving vast tax benefits to REITs who gobble up land and rent only the wealthier tenant. A rent control amount of 2% is insane and the RTB are the worst public body in existence, even if TUSLA provide stiff competition. Their website doesn’t work properly and almost takes the incorrect amount in fees. These were supposedly to be refunded but rarely are. There is again a tax credit for renters, but the small landlord sees only persecution and just sells up. A notable issue is the fraudster riddled daft.ie. Many don’t know that a landlord will use an auctioneer and maybe advertise locally. God help us anyhow. If He won’t, we’re up shit creek etc.

Like

12.08 it’s no stunt, shameful that respectable well intentioned young Irish people trying to make their way in life are being demoralised in this way. Many are simply giving up & emigrating whilst incoming foreign nationals experience little or no housing distress. Michael Collins died for nothing, when you think about where Ireland is today. England is not our enemy, now, Ireland has turned in on itself & become its own worse enemy manifested in what is being done to the mental health of our young people starting out in life. I hope something is done for young Irish people sooner rather than later before most of them are forced back to the bad old days of mass emigration, most never to return.

I fear for homeless ex priest, William Mulvihill when the money his friends lent him runs out. He is clearly unwell & therefore incapable of budgeting sensibly so possibly will be unable to afford the serviced apartment by Christmas. Very sad situation for this former priest now at odds with the Roman Catholic Church.

Like

7:57 I disagree, as Bishop Pat knows having had to undergo therapy to recover from his own years in ministry, William Mulvihill isn’t the first person to have his sanity compromised by Roman church duplicity & abuse. no one deserves to have their lives destroyed by these tricksters posing as representing an honest and decent church when outcomes such as the gradual disintegration of victims sanity and dignity prove what a dangerous and destructive organisation the Roman Catholic Church is. The toxic & unchristian manner in which anonymous clerics and their friends address William and the mother targetted by the Ennis priest speaks volumes of the truth about church types and what they get off on in seeking ways to abuse their fellow human beings. A dangerous cult of clergy & their volunteers & clearly with so much free time on their hands. Hoping William Mulvihill, Dom Benedict Andersen and the mother, her family in Clare and anyone else being abused in any related way by these awful people finds justice and eventual peace back in their lives. You have explained it in a nut shell.
The RCC do not carry out the teachings of Jesus as told in the bible and thus Jesus cannot be with the church and the carry on and manipulation that is carried out. No wonder the world has gone crazy. Jesus said he will remain with his church for all eternity and he is found in the hearts of each and everyone of us as we try to help each other by allowing his love to flow through us.

I have 4/5 families who call to my door on a weekly basis and the odd homeless wanderer: wouldn’t I Iove to have the kind of money you have so I could support these worthy people? Bill, there’s little relevance for you commenting any further unless and until you take all the good advice given to you. Do yourself a favour for your own well being and seek proper help. You cannot continue to manipulate the emotions of commenters. Nor can you or any commenter lay blame on the Church for your travails: The truth is you were financially looked after and on leaving priesthood you chose a particular attitude and mindset which, sadly, is destructive for you. To WM:
From the Book of Common Prayer belonging to the 1st Duke of Leinster/20th Earl of Kildare, James Fitzgerald:
Saint Michael & All the Angels
The Collect
O Everlasting God, who hast ordained and constituted the services of Angels and men in a wonderful order; Mercifully grant, that as thy holy Angels always do thee service in heaven; so by thy appointment they may succour and defend us on earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
For the Epistle: Rev. 12:7-12
‘And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.’

Lugs Monahan pays them handsomely, full pay and benefits- for their ‘time out’ .. They don’t have to worry about sleeping in cars or paying bills or how to make a useful contribution to society. They can behave as they want to.. no supervision or being held to account with their ‘friends’.. party on boys.. It’s a great church and country.. But, during Covid a lot of older people stopped going to mass and paying up.. the only way this will stop is when the funds start to run low. Lugs will just keep selling properties to keep the ship afloat for a bit longer..

I think Fintan is paying GF a reduced rate. He also lost the use of the house in Ennis. While he’s hardly on the bones of his arse I daresay he isnt well off either. Mind you he did have 17k in his bank account, which could be his. And was buying Hulk Hogan vintage figures.
I live and work abroad and much as I would like to return home to Ireland but realistically we will have to stay. The cost of living is out of control there and what is worse is that it isn’t going to improve anytime soon. There is no serious political will to do this, especially with accommodation/housing. That rag the Indo are jumping up and down cheerleading the giveaway budget and the Sinn Fein councillor getting done for murder so there is a significant chance that FFG may end up back in power. Its funny because the giveaway budget is only a finger in the dyke for this year. The reality is parents like me have to think about what we are going to be able to give kids later to they can make a start in life – in Ireland at the moment it is just not possible to save for the future for kids on two normal professional wages with a mortgage and the kids are going to need serious wedges in future if this continues.

The Data Protection Office had better prove itself to not also to be run by crooks and to deal with all the breaches of human data rights currently being conducted by Irish Roman Catholic Church. EC legislation is very clear about human rights laws in relation to the acquisition, storage and appropriate, relevant dissemination of information and all this legislation is being abused daily in Diocese all over Ireland.

10:47am speaks about Fr. Tom Ryan and his “brother-in-law” Fr. Brendan Quinlivan. How can they be related in that way? I assume one of them would have to have a sister married to the other one!!!!! Two priests cannot, because of the ban on married clergy, be brothers-in-law.

Like

11:32 You correctly question the brother in law relationship between two priests but I would question your use of the word ‘can’t’ – I think you mean ‘shouldn’t’ because otherwise priests
Can’t be sexually active
Can’t be gay
Can’t be abusers
Can’t be criminals
… and we know they can be and are all these things.

Like

10.53 I read no allegation of any wrong doing in relation to the 2 Killaloe family priests mentioned @ 10.47am , their family connection to each is common knowledge in Killaloe. No secret. 11.32 may or may not already have known of their family connection to each other. Term is correct in the context. Those with right to know, know. Rights of all should therefore be respected in the conduct of their private business with senior church members and should not be made available as canon fodder for the great unwashed. Interesting to view the great efforts that go into cover up rather than in satisfactorily resolving outstanding business. No need to be so emotional about being held to account unless of course one is gaining personally from it in some way. Also no need to be gloating at the misfortunes of vulnerable persons deceased and living targetted by their social and financial influencers.

Newstalk just interviewed a teaching fellow at TCD on a 9 month ongoing contract who is living in a dormitory with under very crowded conditions because he cannot find accommodations. There are many more where he came from. Meanwhile you have Bishop Monahan retweeting Trócaire’s tweet voicing approval for sending millions overseas. Help the people at home first you sanctimonious gobshites! Sure the politicians, charity managers and clergy all have it made in the shade. They don’t give a fuck about the ordinary Joe struggling to find housing, struggling to pay for electricity and food, and struggling to put petrol in their car. Proper evil bastardos who are oblivious to the suffering on the streets. For them, love of filthy lucre reigns supreme!!

Like

First of all there is nothing wrong with Fintan retweeting that. Trocaire do great work abroad and just because Ireland is in trouble shouldnt mean we drop everyone else too. Fintan and GF do not seem to be the worst guys in the world really.
The problem of housing is literally caused by mass immigration. I have nothing against immigration -I live abroad myself – but there are simply not enough houses for everyone. Ireland does not have enough workers for all the work she is doing and has to import, and this is especially true of companies below the blue-chips, who hire outside the EU with work permits to keep the wage cost down. It is the Irish themselves -landlords -who have decided to rob everybody. Simple law changes like tax reductions for small landlords and rent being fixed at 125% of mortgage repayment would have sorted this out long ago. Instead the Irish are cannabilizing the Irish, with shitty semi-ds being rented out for 2.5k a month when the mortgage is 1k. This should simply never have been allowed, irrespective of demand, from day 1 when things started to pick up in 2014. Secondly the learn-English-to-get-a-visa scam needs to be banned totally – these are private schools making no serious tax payer contribution yet are filling the country, especially Dublin, with students and making it harder to rent for workers and third level students. This is the worst I have ever seen it in Ireland -just 700-800 properties on Daft today, all prohibitively expensive. Unless Sinn Fein do something about it there is going to be serious social disorder in Ireland.

12.54: You are so wrong in your anger. Thank God that TROCAIRE receives the huge support it does. As a charity it is at the heart of responding to unimaginable suffering. YIUR ANGER IS MISDIRECTED. Every parish has a St. v de Paul Group who do immense work in helping struggling families. Where do they get the majority of funds they require?THROUGH MONTHLY CHURCH GATE COLLECTIONS and no one begrudges giving generously to them. Most parishes have a charity fund through which many families receive necessary support. Less if you keyboard shite and LIES!! Are you a contributor to any charity??

1.27 My anger is directed at the government for sending millions abroad when they ought to be using that money to help alleviate the poverty at home! If we are on the subject of Trócaire: TROCAIRE received in 2019/20 €64million.
‘Trocaire, which had an income of €64million in 2019/20, paid its CEO €125,000 in 2018 and 2019. Two people are paid more than €100,000 and 32 greater than €60,000.’ Of course the fat cats want to stay well fed! Do I contribute to charities? It really is none of your business…but I will answer. It depends on how much of each euro actually goes to help people and how much is spent on administrative salaries. There are other ways to help charities: I donate household goods to SVP. I certainly would not donate to Trócaire given their recent rap on the knuckles by the Charities Regulator!

4.05: Sir, many charities, as you know, have been subjected to much scrutiny re: money accountability and some revelations have been shocking. You are right on one thing, not just about TROCAIRE, but salary levels are way too high for directors and co-directors. There is also the problem of a proliferation of charities doing similar work, which is why I donate only to TROCAIRE, Br. Kevin, Alice Leahy, ALONE and St. v. de Paul. I disagree with your targeting of TROCAIRE. Is it because it’s the Church’s official third world charity? Also, I believe the argument about the government looking after their own people first is a bogus one. There is a moral duty on all such nations to look generously beyond its borders. As TROCAIRE says: “Give a little so that others may simply live”…So true!

If you abolish bedsits and make it more an more difficult for landlords to rent property you end up with more an more homelessness. I spent my 20s in bedsits in Dublin an London. They were not ideal but they were fine an affordable. The Greens abolished them. It is now more an more difficult to evict tenants. There are rent controls on increasing rents. Result landlords stop renting property altogether . In liberal lefty Ireland you either have perfect accommodation or no accommodation. U couldn’t make it up.

The living arrangements in Rising Damp would be outlawed now. If the landlord lives at the premises, then they should permit rooms to be let without all the regulations of fire doors, yearly electrical and gas checks, fire sprinklers, etc etc

It was outlawed to the detriment of providing people with affordable accommodation. All these fancy pants regs aren’t for free and increase costs which have to be passed on.

Congratulations to the four Dominicans who took perpetual vows in a ceremony in Dublin earlier this month. The former lawyer, two doctors and a physicist are all preparing for priestly ordination. Bishop Deenihan has just ordained two new OPs and there’s a bumper crop of novices as well. I think it’s a good idea to block 🚫 Bill.

Whatever his mental health condition, it probably doesn’t help him to be posting regularly on the blog. His behaviour is typical of an internet troll and any comments about him here only serves to fuel his twisted ‘me against the world’ fantasy.

I imagine most intelligent contributors to the blog will recognise that it’s possible for some people to have a serious mental health problems but still have awareness of and control over their bad behaviour. My understanding of Bill, is that he is mentally unstable but aware of the damage he is doing in his words and deeds.

BILL MULVIHILL AND MONEY
It is best not to give or lend any money to Bill. He asks for loans with a promise to repay within days but does not repay.
Two weeks ago he borrowed £ 400 from me telling me he had nowhere to stay
on three nights. I was fooled. And all the while he was buying luxury cashmere scarves etc at € 400 a pop.
He also meets friends for dinner and runs up big food and drink bills and expects his friends to pay ALL the time.
His recent visit to me cost me hundreds also. – plus the grief afterwards.
If Bill were a man of honour he would pay back what he has borrowed
