A dreadful tragedy. I have never had a heavy heart since the Omagh bombing which was obviously different. Beautiful people going on about their daily chores. Just when irish news was so bad all year. RIP

All parishes in the country are praying for all caught up in this terrible tragedy. We have 10 candles with the names of those who died at front of our sanctuary. May God bless all families and gather the deceased into his presence. May all priests officiating be inspired in their ministry of caring and comforting.

Pat, the randomness of this event, as Bishop McGuckian said, is a stark reminder of life’s vulnerability and of our own fragility. With the deoth of reflection and prayer being shared by thousands it would be a graced blessing for all of us to reevaluate our lives. Suddenly the smallest thing is precious but life, love, family and community and the spiritual home of church are the key touchstones in these tragedies. It’s so inspiring to witness the closeness of the Creeslough community. This beautiful place, now shattered, will find its time again to raise up greater beauty in all things. For now, our prayers are with those who died, all who grieve, all responders, medical staff, psycholigists, teachers, priests, strangers, neighbours, parents, guardians, families, the little children, teenagers, teachers – God, only you can bring strength within and healing so that people can bear this crucifixion.

It has been a few very sad days. The good people of Creeslough should be allowed to mourn their dead quietly and peacefully. I really hope that Brian D’Arcy doesn’t try to muscle in and make it all about himself. You know what he’s like.

Brian D’Arcy will not be allowed at all.
You make it out that all the Bishops are stupid when this is not the case and the other day they said Bishop McGuckian had no media skills well the secret is he is a Priest.
Michael Higgins is attending eight out the ten funerals but cannot make the two today.
Join us in Prayer and solidarity and may Our Blessed Mother be with all who mourn.

Please also remember the priests they are human as well and this is difficult for them as well but not as painful as the families.
Even light a candle during the Mas for them.

8:52am yes, Fr. D’arcy will probably show up at funerals. He has zero self-awareness and zero manners. And the other fly in the ointment is Daniel and Majella. Why do these people think that they should have a seat at every table? Just stay away please.

Please God that those poor families get all the support needed to help the at this time of devastating grief. I do hope that the bold D’Arcy keeps out of it. This no time for attention seeking.

To be fair if Daniel and Majella dont go it’d be bad form. It’s a major disaster and they are from Donegal and may even know know victims and/or their families.
This is out of Brain D’arcy’s jurisdiction and I hope the local priests will put the foot down and say no.

10.06 Fr Brian D’Arcy is no better and no worse than the majority of nosey Irish types that attend funerals to be seen & or to satisfy their idle curiosity & priests & co who engage in self interested activities around these funerals. Bless the victims and their loved ones.

Pat, this tragic accident has brought to the fore the pastoral empathy of Fr. John Joe Duffy, along with many other clergy of various denominations. Thank God for people like them, because their role is central to the support which the community of Creeslough needs. There are so many good priests working quietly day to day and I want to acknowledge that. I hope that Fr. John Joe seeks the support which he will need after this, and that his bishop and diocese give him every help.

@10.27 it would be tragic if Fr John Joe Duffy did not receive the support from his Bishop that he will need in dealing with the grieving families and community in Creeslough. He could end up like that burnt out Bishop featured on yesterdays blog.

Bishop Pat Thanks for your compliment about Bishop McGuckian and his Clergy.
Of course Father john Joe Duffy will be supported by his Brother priests and His Bishop also his friend is close to Pope Francis so he will be fine.
The Church is not all bad apples there are Good fruits within Bishops, Clergy and the Lay Faithful.
I could wager a bet that Bishop Pat Buckley would reach out his hands to Father John Joe in Friendship and Love but for Pat’s image he would denigh that.

Yes, a truly terrible tragedy, whose effect is seared in the hearts of relatives, wider family, and friends.
Sadly, this kind of horror was the norm, for some thirty years, for men, women, and children in NI at the hands of republican and loyalist terrorists.

Because I could not stop for Death
He kindly stopped for me –
The Carriage held but just Ourselves –
And Immortality.
We slowly drove – He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility –
We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess – in the Ring –
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain –
We passed the Setting Sun –
Or rather – He passed Us –
The Dews drew quivering and Chill –
For only Gossamer, my Gown –
My Tippet – only Tulle –
We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground –
The Roof was scarcely visible –
The Cornice – in the Ground –
Since then – ’tis Centuries – and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses’ Heads
Were toward Eternity –

10.27: Keith: don’t use this tragedy to score points against clerics. The vast, vast majority of us carry out our pastoral work without fanfare. Funerals are the moments when we do our utmost for the bereaved, often meeting with them on 3/4 occasions to help organise the Mass for their loved ones. Fr. D. has his style. That’s his business. Priests like Fr. John Joe and others in Creeslough are exemplary in pastoral care, sensitivity and empathy. May God bless all of the Community who are impacted by this huge tragedy. Your “priests and co” reference is ignorant. What stands out in this tragedy is the beautiful kindness of everyone alongside great Christ like compassion.

10:55am I think you’re mixed up regarding the post @ 10:27am. The 10:27 post doesn’t have a go at clerics…..on the contrary. Nor does it appear critical of the bishop and diocese. Read it slowly and try to understand what it’s saying.

I have just listened to and been inspired by the words of Fr Duffy at the funeral of MARTIN MC GILL RIP.
I must heartily congratulate Fr Duffy on his words – Christian, compassionate, faith-full and beautifully simple.
Cresslough has a good and loving pastor.

Pat, you don’t know what you want regarding priests. Run them down one minute and then praise them the next. Your words are hollow and shallow. You are, as ever, all over the place just like the funeral homilies today with very little theology or substance.

When priests do badly I highlight and criticise them.

I agree with you pat that it is more pastors we need not theologians. Anonymous at 2.50 sounds so lonely and bitter and in my opinion wants the time where men were in control and so many things covered up.
May all who lost their lives in this tragedy find heavenly peace and the people left behind find solace in the days and times ahead.

Isn’t it strange, though perhaps not unsurprising, that D’Arcy has inveigled himself in to this sad story which the blog treats today ? It just shows you how much that man has engendered a capacity to make himself present everywhere and in everything. He’s presence and tentacles are insidious. It’s clear, also, that there is not much liking of him. I think people instinctively understand what his game is. It is a wonder that Wogan had so much time for him. Daniel and the wife also need to keep their twee, saccharine and mawkish presences absent over the next few days. Not that they will, I am sure.
