What a awful carry on in East Anglia cathedral.
Poor Alana Hopes, the outgoing bishop, is is hard to listen to but the incoming one is even worse.
Their off-putting posh, stuffed nose English accents are awful and their 19 th century clotted cream piousity is disastrous.
I suppose these days Rome is looking for a safe pair of hands and someone without a whiff of scandal.
And, of course in England, former seminary rectors and staff seem to get appointed.
But very often these men are quasi academics and do not great pastoral experience.
In fairness to Collins, has served in several parishes in Cardiff.
But he does not strike me as a man who knows what a litre of milk or a loaf of bread costs.
Nor does he strike me as a man a married man could go to to talk about his emotional and sexual struggles within his marriage.
But I suppose nowadays bishops do not do much counselling or hear too many confessions. It’s a desk job these days.
I can remember my ordaining bishop, Michael Russell of Waterford, hearing confessions in Waterford cathedral every Saturday.
That was handy for those who had committed “mortal sins” that were reserved to the bishop.
These days, bishops in many places are like the captain of the Titanic – managing decline and closure.
