What a awful carry on in East Anglia cathedral.

Poor Alana Hopes, the outgoing bishop, is is hard to listen to but the incoming one is even worse.

Their off-putting posh, stuffed nose English accents are awful and their 19 th century clotted cream piousity is disastrous.

I suppose these days Rome is looking for a safe pair of hands and someone without a whiff of scandal.

And, of course in England, former seminary rectors and staff seem to get appointed.

But very often these men are quasi academics and do not great pastoral experience.

In fairness to Collins, has served in several parishes in Cardiff.

But he does not strike me as a man who knows what a litre of milk or a loaf of bread costs.

Nor does he strike me as a man a married man could go to to talk about his emotional and sexual struggles within his marriage.

But I suppose nowadays bishops do not do much counselling or hear too many confessions. It’s a desk job these days.

I can remember my ordaining bishop, Michael Russell of Waterford, hearing confessions in Waterford cathedral every Saturday.

That was handy for those who had committed “mortal sins” that were reserved to the bishop.

These days, bishops in many places are like the captain of the Titanic – managing decline and closure.

The diocese of East Anglia founded in the late 70’s by Pope Paul VI. Alan Hopes was a no hope after Vincent got rid of him as auxiliary in Westminster. Although he was an Anglican convert it was to cover Pope Benedict’s foolish Ordinariate agenda/fiasco. The best bishop and also convert of East Anglia was Alan Clarke a total charming man and ordained by Bishop Parker.

It’s not a question of appointing Bishops in their sixties, they need to appoint Bishops who still hold the Catholic Faith and not the watered down crap we’ve had to put up with for years. The liberal elite in power for far too long need be removed and replaced with Catholics and that’s from the top down!🙄

Bishop Bling in Lisbreen Palace needs to start doing more groundwork. He celebrated mass last Sunday in St Agnes’ with Fr Lyons but after mass rushed out and didn’t speak to a parishioner.

Bishop Treanor couldn’t run round a squash court at his age. He probably goes to the leisure centre to get a nice warm shower as I am certain the facilities in his own humble home are not up to standard.

What does ‘renew’ mean?
If it means the church fulfilling the great commission then I think the age of the bishop isn’t of consequence.
If it means the relentless pursuit of donations, the youth, and a higher market share then the church’s goose is cooked anyway.

My goodness, today’s blog is premature – a very nasty pip at a man who is yet to be ordained. All the communications I have received indicate he is an excellent appointment. There is a ridiculous suggeston that the shape and size of ones teeth are evidence of personality and zeal. This is a truley dreadful suggestion that should be tempered by a decency of approach. I suggest holding back your fire until you have the most incontrovertible proof of any error on Bishop Elect Collins’s part. For my part, defence in the wake of ill-advised blather and strong support for a good appointment will be sustained.

I recall an elderly monsignor telling me that there is a phrase you use if the papal nuncio calls you to see him, and you are compromised in some way and, therefore, unable to accept an episcopal appointment. Apparently, upon hearing the phrase, there is no judgement and no arm bending and no reappearance on a future terna. I suspect the nuncio doesn’t have an easy job finding new bishops with nothing to hide. Look at politicians and the number who seem to get involved in sexual scandals.

FFS, give us a proper man rather than some old woman. Or if they are going to give us a woman, why not ordain some decent women. They would outshine the men. What message does this Collins appointment send ? More of the same, more nonsense, more irrelevance, more piousness for the sake of being apparently pious, less engagement with the real world and its people. Well, if they carry on like that people will cop of and move on and Collins and co will be left stranded in their own ever decreasing irrelevant world. The people of East Anglia deserve better.

The problem is that anyone with a bit of flair, leadership or charisma has probably made mistakes along the way, which are not easily overlooked in this age of social media. Look at Bishop Belo? or the young Spanish Bishop who went off with the Devil Woman. You mitigate the risk, I guess. the downside is you get uninspirational appointments. The same in politics. Why does the US have an 80-year-old POTUS with clear signs of dementia?

I’m very much alive, and hope the big chair Dalriada man is too. Perhaps he, like myself, feels the blog to now be so degraded that it’s hardly worthwhile commenting: certainly not responding to the puerile tit-for-tat trash talk now so evident.
I did send several comments recently which +Pat didn’t post. I concluded he doesn’t post whatever directly challenges his views or asks him to explain himself.
As an example, approx a fortnight BEFORE he finally blocked Mulvihill I asked him to clearly explain his reasons for continuing to post M’s clearly “unhinged utterances.” He didn’t respond, nor post my comment. Was this a “cop-out?” Why should I bother making/seeking sensible comments?
I seldom bother with this blog now, for I miss the former intelligent informative qualitative comment as well as the tongue in cheek humorous ones. And I did appreciate the positivity from some of you when you thought I’d died.

You may not have had, “no English or Welsh reject is foisted on us”. However you have an Irish one, the biggest one of all, who was in 2013 was UK’s then most senior Catholic cleric, and a vocal opponent of gay rights, the homosexual, sex mad Keith O’Brien, hardly one to be put admired or seen, as a pillar of virtue for the Roman Catholic church or, Scotland.
Maybe an English or Welsh Bishop would not be so terrible after all.

I know nothing of Bishop-Elect Peter Collins and could not comment. However, there are a number of favourable comments. That is good enough for me.
As for Bishope Hopes. As someone who is profoundly deaf, I have always found Bishop Hopes to have a very clear voice. He is very approachable. The East Anglia Diocese has one of the best web sites.
I am not English, and I can assure you that they do not have stuffed English accents . Being Welsh, Bishop-Elect Collins certainly does not have an English accent. I find Larne accents very stuffed.
Oh, I watched the funeral reception Mass on you tube, as suggested by RIP at 7.32pm last night for Canon McDonnell. It was very touching and the sermon was well delivered and clear for deaf people. I presume it was Archbishop Martin. Well said sir.

This blog finds anything to moan about. Let’s see the positive in the outgoing and incoming bishops.
Alan Hopes is hard working and drives around his diocese visiting parishes. Vocations to the priesthood in the diocese have increased in his time as bishop. He is extremely Pastoral in his ministry.
Most of the ministry of the incoming bishop has been in parish ministry. He certainly is no pen pusher or desk jockey. In the interest of balance, when I first saw the news, I did say to the person I was with, “He’s the spitting image of Dick Emery”. Thank goodness none of us judge by looks!
