MY NEWS OF THE WORLD YEARS – 1994 TO 2005.

YESTEDAY A FORMER NEWS OF THE WORLD COLLEAGUE FROM LONDON COMMENTED ON THE BLOG.

Many readers will not realise that I spent eleven years as their Irish Columnist.

I had my own page in the Irish edition to write what I wished. No one in the newspaper ever told me what I could write and what I could not write.

Obviously the NOW lawyers in Lobdon vetted everything from everyone for libel. But the great thing about the NOW was that, like myself, it was basically anti establishment.

When I wrotev A THORN IN THE SIDE in 1994 and it became an Irish Number One bestseller, the NOW, serialised it over two Sundays.

That serialisation went down well and they offered me a permanent spot.

As Daly had cut off all my church income the NOW income played a major role in my financial survival.

Naturally, that income was fully reported to the tax man as part of my self employment tax returns.

I also found and worked on many other stories with the NOW chef de bureau and the other journalists based in Dublin.

We did many early RCC exposures in Ireland.

THE FUN SIDE

There were many fun aspects to my involvement – the Christmas parties in Dublin and in Fleet Street in London.

Cartoon artists were on hand for all the parties.

The London Christmas parties started at 11 am with a pub crawls down one side of Fleet Street and up the other side.

I have never liked getting drunk and it has not happened me much. There was no way I could up with the seasoned Fleet Street hacks. So I drank some and left much sitting on the table.

THE TORY AND LABOUR PARTY CONFERENCES

For those eleven years the NOW brought me to all the autumn party conferences.

It was very interesting to meet with and chat with senior British politicians like Mo Mowlam, Gordon Rown. Michael Heseltine, Kenneth Clarke etc.

Not many get to see these things from the inside.

AND THEN THE INFAMOUS PHONE TAPPING

The oldest and biggest selling newspaper, the NEWS OF THE WORLD collapsed and closed over the phone tapping of the phones of celebrities and others.

In a shock call one morning from SCOTLAND YARD I learned that my phone was one of those that had been tapped.

All the celebs involved all took personal cases against the NOW.

I was one of 300 “small fry” who got a court agreed sum in compensation.

ALL IN ALL

My experience in and through the NOW was very varied and interesting.

AND – a good preparation for writing this blog.

What an amazing experience Bishop Pat, thank you for sharing. Although he did not intend it, Cahal Daly inadvertently did you a big favour. He who laughs last laughs loudest. God Bless. Don’t forget to call into the Bishops Finger pub next time you back in Fleet Street/Smithfield area. We still here!

Pat, the NOW rag was never allowed into our home nor similar gutter mags, as my mother called them. I can’t ever recall seeing any of the gutter rags in our tables. Usually it was the Irish Press, Irish Independent or more latterly The Sunday Mail My aunt used to give us the Sunday Times. However, the rags that printed semi naked women were often bought by some of the older villagers for a thrill, if you get my drift. But my parents never allowed such smutty rags in our home. Later in life I often bought The Sunday World for Brian Darcys article which I collected. After a couple of years I threw them into a bonfire!! I never got NOW…So I can’t comnent on your articles but I have some idea that they were very sharply anti establishment. Pat, you’ve had a varied career ever since you went independent. I doubt you’d have enjoyed your life had you continued in the “true fold”….

Mmmmm ? Now, what is @2:18’s comment intended to elicit ? The poor man is dead before his time. He evidently had an interesting life and enjoyed himself, even if somewhat questionably and contrary to his public promise of celibacy and priestly life. But, in the big picture, does it make any difference ? I suspect the lacks and compromises in his life will be far outweighed by the good that he did, and that is really what counts in the end. So, I think we should just leave it there and let the man and his memory rest in peace. Although, I did like the Daly advice about changing his car and number plate to frustrate the RUC !

That’s not Catholic teaching on the Four Last Things. It is the individual’s state of soul at the time of death that matters. It is not a case of averaging out the good and bad things a person did.

You do have to ask yourself what person would not already report suspected abuse if they knew about it ?! I guess the clergy will go on bleating about seal of the confession and all that stuff, in order to carve out for themselves an exception and a special status. Not because they particularly believe in that stuff, but mostly because they like to be different and special. All that stuff about priestly consecration, chosen, ontological difference and change / priest prophet king nonsense. Well, with a bit of luck the IICSA report will pull them down off their pedestals and in to line and rub their noses in the shit that they have inhabited for so long.

I doubt the clergy can go on about Confessions as post Covid there are No queues for Confessions and it is rebranded The Sacrament of Reconciliation.
It is usually the same over 60’s in the queue week in and week out and despite the Clergy saying there is No need for coming every week for minor sins.
God forbid if some of the bloggers on he were True members of the RCC or even the LMB they would be there daily for the unchristian and certainly uncatholic the way they bloys about others.

The days of going into the week box are gone not many chuches use the wee box with the repentant on their knees.

There is a massive struggle to get people under 40 through the door post covid and Bishops are very worred at having to use reserves or sell property.

Justin Welby, the “Archbishop of Canterbury” was doorstepped this morning about IICSA, in which the “Church of England” will be sharply criticised. He came out with some bland comment but looked decidedly uncomfortable.

Clergy have to protect the seal of confession otherwise nobody would tell them shit ….one could rape murder or molest and they would say nothing or some might say something quietly … Yet the local priest and having having an affair or a lapse of vow would be sold down the river faster than a tramp to chips … It’s their job to keep secrets they also love hearing secrets ….

That implies his acceptance and foreknowledge as well of whats going on inside BUT he made no attempts to stop it.

I remember the days when naughty clergy and their scandals were printed in the NOW / Sun / People etc. They can’t be arsed to waste space and ink on those kind of things these days. Lots of the stuff that you highlight on this blog would have been front page news 25 years ago. Which is why it is important that this blog continues to highlight the stuff that clergy, bishops and the Church get up to. It keeps them on their toes. I guarantee that in most dioceses there is someone tasked with checking this blog every day to find out what is going on and what is being said. Without it they wouldn’t give a toss and would just go on their merry way. Now they have to worry a little bit.

My mobile was tapped at one stage when my abuse case against the state was at its final stage. I didn’t know it at all until a relative heard my mobile rand weird sounds. Even my email was hacked which was confirmed by Hotmail.
So i continued as normal with more caution during my abuse case re its final stages as it dragged into many months.
Was watching a documentary on hacking last night, it’s possible that they get inside mobile, provided that they purchased a specialised technology equipment from BAE in Denmark with a special license.
Thailand govt bought that equipment recently re dissidents mobiles. My friend arrived in Thailand last week as I couldn’t tell him cos they might be reading my texts.

Its v difficult to read if it’s ladyboy or not. In some cases, easy to read the signs, other cases v difficult to read the signs.

Friend and I was talking to a ladyboy that we didn’t know cos we thought she was a woman. Luckily, pub manager told us later.

Strongest area I was told was Phuket and BKK. Its easy to see it in phuket cos they were so open about it but not in BKK. Cafe restaurant staff in Phuket warned us re thefts, room ransacked, watches stolen. We were all warned by kind staff there.

I can’t wait for the day when a transgender woman is ordained, if it has not already happened, women will get into the Catholic priesthood one way or another, balls or not.
It will cause such confusion, the seminary rector will look at the soft faced effete candidate, thinking I’m in with a chance with this one, only to be disappointed……
Presumably they will then have to reintroduce the Pontificus Testiculum Confitemur Iudex for every candidate to the priesthood, that should be fun…..

I know this blog comes alive when his Passionist colleague – and enemy – Darcy is mentioned, but it would be worthwhile knowing more about Donegal. What does he actually do? What his cancer-scare just an excuse to avoid parish work? Why is he hanging round Ardoyne?

Pretty damning. “The investigation into the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales revealed a sorry history of child sexual abuse where abusive priests and members of religious orders and institutions preyed on children for prolonged periods of time. Between 1970 and 2015, the Church received more than 3,000 complaints against more than 900 individuals connected to the Church. In the same period, there were 177 prosecutions, resulting in 133 convictions. Millions of pounds have been paid to victims and survivors in civil proceedings. Since 2016, there have been more than 100 reported allegations of recent and non-recent child sexual abuse every year. The true scale of abuse over a 50-year period is likely to be much greater.

Responses to disclosures about child sexual abuse have been characterised by a failure to support victims and survivors – in stark contrast to the positive action often taken to protect perpetrators and the reputation of the Church.

The reactions of Church leaders over time were marked by delay in implementing change, as well as reluctance to hold individuals to account or to make sincere apologies. On occasions, they conveyed a grudging and unsympathetic attitude to victims and survivors. In order to shake off the failures of the past, real and lasting changes to attitudes are needed.

Although there have been some improvements to current safeguarding arrangements, more recent audits have identified weaknesses. The culture and attitudes in the Roman Catholic Church have been resistant to change.

During the Roman Catholic Church case study on the Archdiocese of Birmingham, the Archdiocese accepted that it was responsible “for institutional failings which on occasion permitted the sexual abuse of children to continue when it might otherwise have been stopped”.

The publication of the Nolan report in 2002 was a significant milestone for the Roman Catholic Church because it examined the Church’s child protection arrangements and made recommendations for structural and procedural reforms. The Cumberlege report was published in 2007 and was intended to identify further reforms. The recommendations of these reports set a clear and unequivocal direction for the Church and were intended as a springboard for major change. While some improvement has been noted in the Archdiocese of Birmingham since the publication of these reports, there were still significant gaps in their child safeguarding arrangements.”

The Anglican Church investigation examined whether the Church of England and the Church in Wales protected children from sexual abuse. Current safeguarding arrangements were also considered. A total of 390 people associated with the Church of England from the 1940s to 2018 were convicted of sexual offences against children. In 2018, 449 concerns were reported to the Church about recent child sexual abuse, of which more than half related to Church officers. Latterly, a significant amount of offending involved downloading and possession of indecent images of children.

As with other religious organisations, the Anglican Church is marked by its explicit moral purpose in teaching right from wrong. In the context of child sexual abuse, the Church’s neglect of the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of children and young people in favour of protecting its reputation was in conflict with its mission of love and care for the innocent and vulnerable.

Safeguarding arrangements in the Church of England were under-resourced until 2015, when resources increased considerably. Changes were also made which aimed to ensure that the advice of safeguarding staff should not be ignored. Nevertheless, there were still some occasions when the advice was disregarded.

The Church of England failed to respond consistently to victims and survivors with sympathy and compassion, accompanied by practical and appropriate support. This often added to the trauma of those who had experienced child sexual abuse by individuals connected to the Church. While there have been important improvements in child protection practice, the Church of England still has more to do to rebuild the trust of victims and survivors. Some internal past case reviews were flawed and inaccurate, and there was a tendency to minimise offending.

Some sharp words throughout the Final Report about social services, e.g.
9. Victims and survivors who felt let down commonly described institutions failing to take action when they sought acknowledgement or accountability. It seemed to some that
institutions were not interested in understanding or acknowledging their experiences.
Alice felt let down by both the police and the institution in which she was sexually abused:
“we’ve not had justice and we’ve been treated with such disdain … there is no recognition that we’ve been failed”.
455 Even though the children’s home manager who sexually abused Bryce was convicted, the responsible local authority never apologised:
“I never got an apology from social services for everything they put me through … for placing me into a community where people are meant to look after you, not harm you but
look after you, and that is a failure on both counts.” Bryce, Truth Project participant

A very interesting life you have had Pat, there is nothing like variety in life, the Irish Roman Catholic church must see you as a scourge, its you that exposes the filth and crimes in it still, it would appear the seminaries are churning out priests who are so unsuitable for ministry, it makes a mockery of Catholicism, maybe it has always been so, with the faithful blithely unaware, until recently, with thanks to the wonderful tenacious journalist of the Boston Globe in 2002, which blew the lid off the the scumhole .
No doubt there are very many of us, very grateful to you for your continued exposure of duplicitous Irish Catholic church priests.

Taking on the elite . One column about the then Garda commissioner causing havoc in the ranks but ignored your questions about Casey stealing 70,000 quid from Galway.
Another recommending Prague as a great spot for a city break . Absolutely the truth.
Weasel faced Daly did you a favour.
A pity you didn’t do a column at the time exposing his illegal adoption of a young fellow to live with him who just happens to be gay. I reckon he would have been gone the next day Pat, thus saving you and others such stress from this odious little gay man.

I was sick of their constant mention of Fatima cos Im not a fan of Fatima. What about Lourdes etc? Visited Lourdes 3 times when I was a teenager.
I had visited that place twice as I read and re- read their stories. Plus the atmosphere in Fatima which I felt bit empty, something not right there. I don’t know what to make of it but i decided that Fatima not credible enough. ‘worthy of belief’ doesn’t cut it. But I found Knock more credible than Fatima.
P mc keever has done very good work re raising awareness about complicity and duplicitous lives of priests etc. But constant harping of Fatima undermined her work, also she didn’t name the priests in question. But she isn’t the only one but owner of this blog too cos both didn’t name the priests in daisy chain in Scotland. She didn’t want to tarnish priests by not naming priests. Bishops in Scotland took advantage of her by not responding to her complaints. You need to get tough with these bishops.

The Inquiry widened its understanding of the role of the Roman Catholic Church in education through the English Benedictine Congregation (EBC) case studies incorporating
Ampleforth and Downside Abbeys and schools and Ealing Abbey and St Benedict’s School.
The Ampleforth and Downside case study heard evidence of appalling sexual abuse inflicted over decades on children aged as young as seven at Ampleforth and 11 at Downside.
Ten individuals – mostly monks connected to these institutions – have been convicted or cautioned in relation to offences involving sexual activity with a large number of children, or offences concerning pornography. Many perpetrators did not hide their sexual interests from the children.
Rather than refer a suspected perpetrator to the police, in several instances the Abbot of the particular school confined the individual to the Abbey or transferred him and the known risk to a different parish or other location. For much of the period under consideration by the Inquiry, the overriding concern was to avoid contact with the local authority or the
police at all costs, regardless of the seriousness of the alleged abuse or actual knowledge of its occurrence.
Time and time again, the most senior clergymen in the EBC and in the two Abbeys, including past presidents of the EBC, admitted wrong-headed judgements and expressed regret at
past failures to protect children.
Child sexual abuse was extensive at Ealing Abbey. Since 2003, two monks and two lay teachers have been convicted of multiple offences involving the sexual abuse of over 20 children between the 1970s and 2008. In 2016, the deputy head was convicted of offences relating to the possession of indecent images of children.
There was a culture of excessive corporal punishment. Physical abuse in many cases was used as a platform for sexual gratification and a means by which to instigate sexual abuse.
Corporal punishment was used to punish boys who sought to protect themselves or others from sexual abuse.
It appeared that many in St Benedict’s School and Ealing Abbey – teachers and monks alike– were aware of sexually abusive behaviour but were seemingly powerless to do anything
about it. Gossip amongst boys and staff was rife and complaints, including from parents, failed to trigger any action from the school. On the rare occasion information was passed on to the authorities, little if any action was taken.
Headteachers and Abbots did little to improve child protection activity at St Benedict’s School. Child sexual abuse was played down. When cases were reported to the police, investigative mistakes were made and, on the rare occasions allegations were referred to the Crown Prosecution Service, the analysis of the evidence was sometimes deficient. Not until much later in time were the named perpetrators finally brought to justice.

Ealing bothers me because is it even likely that every abuser has been caught? Not likely.
Conversely it’s the only case I know of where in the face of inaction from the abbot a priest picked up the phone and dialled the police. Dom Alban Nunn deserves credit as that priest.

I gather Nichols would be very happy today cos Truss resignation pushed the abuse report(IICSA) story to back burner for now or overshadowed the IICSA story completely in the press on coming days.

Then it would be forgotten about and consigned to the news dump for now and in coming weeks.

DG, it seemed very convenient for Tom Deenihan that the Irish Independent reported on the appalling treatment of Dom Benedict Andersen during the middle of a political storm. Simon Coveney was under fire at the time.

Interesting that these articles were published on the same day which means that Coveney on zappone controversy which I remember well became more prominent piece of news. Thus in turn it just sidelined DBA article and relegated it to news dump junk.

Jolly isn’t a Birmingham priest. He’s Liverpool. However, he was at Oscott. Why didn’t David Oakley spot anything when he was the rector there ? Or other staff, for that matter ? Birmingham is still struggling with its safeguarding, its abusive priests, and its finances. + Longley likes a quiet life, without conflict, so leaves all the dirty work to his VG and auxiliary bishops. It is quietly and rapidly going down the tubes as a diocese. There is little that goes on, just keeping up a schedule of masses which are increasingly less and less supported. More or less the same in most of the E&W dioceses. Sad really. But, avoidable, if only they had people in positions of authority and leadership who had a sensible vision and some interest in doing some work. Most bishops in E & W are just interested in maintaining the status quo until they are able to retire. Most haven’t any imagination. The gene pool from which bishops are taken is increasingly thin and spare, because the best people these days avoid the priesthood like the plague. Only the dim, the needy, the autistic and odd sign up. Go to Oscott and have a look around at the seminarians ! God forbid that we are going to have to rely on that crowd in the future. Never mind the staff – but that’s another story !

+ Elsie will be relieved that the IICSA report came out today, on the day the news if full of Librium Liz and the Conservatives. He’ll hope that story will keep going for a few days, then the IICSA stuff will be old hat and forgotten about. As it will be. Especially by bishops and clergy who will go on their merry way, ignoring, denying, covering up. mouthing platitudes, and protecting their mates. Because they answer to a higher authority, don’t they ?! At least they think they do. Until we start locking them up for their crimes of carelessness and criminal disregard. I reckon there is a lot more that has not come out that the likes of + Elsie and + Nursie know and are not saying. I guess they are hoping that they will have died before the truth comes out and spares them a few years in The Scrubs or The Green.

Not sure if Pat or blog readers saw BBC Question Time tonight, at the earlier than usual time of 8pm. The Labour MP on the panel, Jess Phillips, made the powerful point that the IICSA report was published today after an inquiry lasting several years, and despite it finding that CSA is endemic, the whole attention of MPs today was on Liz Truss and who might succeed her.

I appreciated her point, and as other pannelists and audience members pointed out, “instead of focusing on the many problems facing UK (rising prices for food, energy, NHS crisis…..etc,etc), the Conservative Party has been solely concerned with perpetuating their own survival in power.
Indeed the whole saga has been an omnishambles!
There’s another Party leader of an omnishambles, and one nearer to home, …….the Americans refer to him as John Doe, …initially appropriate?
