THE NEW BISHOP OF EAST ANGLIA – A VIEW FROM THE WELSH VALLEYS.

Canon Peter Collins – Bishop-Elect of East Anglia

Submitted by a priest from Wales

On 11th October 2022, it was announced that Pope Francis had appointed as the fifth Bishop of East Anglia, Canon Peter Collins of the Archdiocese of Cardiff.

Peter Gwilym Collins was born on the 13th May 1958 in Tredegar, a small town in South Wales. The youngest of four children, he was raised with his three older sisters in the nearby village of Rhymney. After completing secondary education at Bishop Hedley High School in Merthyr Tydfil, he was accepted as a seminarian for the Archdiocese of Cardiff under Archbishop John A. Murphy in 1978 and sent to the Royal English College in Valladolid, Spain. After his ordination to the Priesthood in July 1984, he was appointed as curate at St. David’s Cathedral in Cardiff, and from 1986 – 1988  curate in Bridgend.

In 1989, after just five years of priesthood, Peter Collins was appointed vice-rector of the Royal English College in Valladolid, remaining in that role until 1994 when he returned to Cardiff as Parish Priest of Chepstow and Caldicot until 2001, and as Dean of the Cathedral until 2019. Since then he has been Parish Priest of St. Mary of the Angels in Canton. He has also undertaken a number of roles within the Archdiocese of Cardiff, most notably in the area of Safeguarding where he has served in various capacities for over twenty-eight years.

Listening to his performance on the internet, it must be asked where and why Peter Collins has acquired his rather strange way of speaking. His accent certainly wasn’t nurtured in his hometown of Rhymney, but pretending at being posh and ‘refined’ is a pastime for a few Cardiff priests. However, the psychology which causes grown men to reinvent themselves in this way is interesting to say the very least. Is Collins ashamed of where he is from? Is he ashamed of his parents and the family in which he was raised? I’m sure he didn’t learn to speak like that in Rhymney.

Contacts amongst the clergy in Cardiff are not at all surprised by this appointment as it has been something which, despite his protestations of shock at hearing the news, the Bishop-Elect has been working towards throughout his entire career. However, they and others remain perplexed as to how an individual as boring, dull, self-important, and incompetent as Peter Collins could, in this day and age, actually be successful in that plight. Most concerningly, these same contacts tell of a man who is angry and prepared to use his roles as a weapon, and as a tool for power and control. A previous Archbishop of Cardiff lived life of questionable morality – Peter Smith was known to have frequented male prostitutes throughout his time in Cardiff.

Far from taking action against this person, or at the very least distancing himself from him, Collins associated with him for years.

Questions have also been raised about Peter Collins’ time as vice-rector of Valladolid. One former student who claims to have suffered under him says that he took a disturbingly zealous interest in the moral lives of the seminarians. Whatever happened in Valladolid ensured that that particular fast-rising star slowed down considerably, and having been overlooked time and time again for the various Welsh dioceses over the last 25 years has now been given, at going on 65 years of age, a diocese at the other end of the country for which few people are less suitable.

With his episcopal ordination scheduled for the 14th of December, we should wish the clergy and people of East Anglia the very best of luck. Seemingly they will need it.

PAT SAYS

It’s hardly surprising that “company men” are appointed bishops in the UK and everywhere.

It’s all about keeping the status quo and watching each other’s backs.

As we often say on here, it’s just about managing decline. As the Scripture says:

“There is neither priest nor prophet to ply his trade in the land“.

And, how ridiculous it is to be taking on such a big job at 65 – the age most other jobs regard as the retiring age?

So few priests now capable of being bishops. Scraping the bottom of the barrel. Those who would be good at it turn it down. Those who gladly accept are blatantly unsuitable.. look at Meath, Waterford, Armagh, Killaloe & kerry .. with obvious results well documented on this blog. When the bishop is weak the likes of Purcell, Rosney, Fitzgerald, Silverstream, Mc Aleer, Coyle, mc Ginn, Carey get away with murder.. they can do what they want..

This is quite unfair. Once someone leaves home, goes to university, lives in different places……. their accent will change. I sound nothing like I did as a ten year old and I have recordings to prove it. The harsh edges of my accent have been smoothed away by the various experiences away from the town of my birth that I have experienced.
Ten years ago I was introduced to someone with whom I went to primary school decades ago. Her later comment to our mutual friend was, “Doesn’t he talk posh!” Err…..no. I just didn’t stay in the same town all my life!!

Alot of Welsh clergy are well known for shitstabbing and backstabbers. This article by a Welsh priest is not surprising and rather proves my point. It is frightening to think that the cruel and nasty priest who penned this trash is probably running a parish somewhere. He is possibly enraged that he himself has been passed over for some sort of promotion. What a sad individual.

He will get on well with a PP of Cambridge, who was arrested for cottaging with a barrister and was splashed across the papers. He loves dressing up too. Being posh now, he can look forward to an invite from the King to Sandringham within his diocese. And with gnashers like that, he wouldn’t look out of place among the horsey set of Newmarket. He will relish the opportunity to pour forth pious platitudes at Our Lady’s Shrine in Walsingham. However, most of the practising catholic population of East Anglia are Phillipino, Keralan and Eastern European agricultural workers.

@12:29: You comment with what seems like a sense of regret: that the religious mythology, apparitions and the like, aren’t as financially productive as in previous more impressionable less well informed days.

Questions, questions ! But, no answers ! There is a whole subterranean culture going on in the moves and appointments of bishops. There simply does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to some of the appointments. And very little transparency. Bishops are just parachuted in. And we are surprised. Why, oh why, is there not much more openness, transparency and consultation in the appointment of bishops ? Why is it just left to a magic circle ? I’m not sure that we are going to put up with this for too much longer. We should know who candidates to be bishop are, we should be able to have a say and a choice, and whoever is appointed should have been tested and probed and questioned so that we are happy with the appointment. Difficult and time consuming, yes, but we deserve that. Remember, it is we who pay. My solution is to stop paying until somebody takes my views and opinions in to account and respects me. I’m happy to collaborate and to come up with a candidate that has a consensus. I’m no longer happy to have some parachuted in or foisted upon me.

Pity that the new Bishop is judged by his physicality rather than his pastoral abilities. The sad truth is that once any bishop is targeted on this blog, they’re shredded to pieces. They’re humiliated as much as possible, judged harshly and by far the worst error is to mark the Catholic Bishops by the standards of Larne. Big error. Big mistake.

East Anglia is mainly an immigrant diocese and few native Catholics. You can see that in Kings Lynn here
https://www.rcdea.org.uk/kings-lynn-parish-celebrates-125-years-at-town-hall/
Peterborough had loads of Italians for the brickworks, but the Italian mission closed there about 15 years ago, and the second and third generations rarely attend church. The Polish arrived around 20 years ago and took over All Souls, the mother church of Peterborough. Indian priests serve the satellite churches.
Wisbech, or Wisbeckistan, was a lovely Georgian market town. It is mainly inhabited by Lithuanian and Eastern Europeans who initially came to work on the land. It’s rife with drugs and violence and has one of the highest murder rates per capita of the population in the UK.
The pretty coastal villages of North Norfolk are mainly second homes for wealthy Londoners and are prohibitively expensive. You drive through in the winter and seldom see the lights on.
I can’t see how this ancient Dick Emery tribute act will reverse the decline.
Cambridge has a colourful PP, to say the least. The satellite parishes have a Vietnamese canon and a Philipino priest in charge. It must have on of the highest number of Anglican priests in such a small area because each college has at least one chaplain.

Actually by using that old phrase ‘the Italian mission’ you’ve highlighted that it’s mainly immigrants throughout England.

I love it when the cathbots demand evidence for something like visiting a prostitute.
For people who live in the real world, rather than chronic denialists of normal human behaviour, visiting a prostitute isn’t exactly uncommon, which is why it remains a profitable business. For example this brothel was getting 200 customers every day:
https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/birmingham-brothel-made-7-million-11919039?int_source=amp_continue_reading&int_medium=amp&int_campaign=continue_reading_button#amp-readmore-target
Or could the clerical angst about brothels be because the clergy is only the second oldest profession?

Like

Bad back places seems fairly unregulated in quite a few places. Yet the Grand Tour bucks of the eighteenth quite liked Papal Rome as after pretending an interest in the ruins and art (say hiring a coach able to speed between the main sites as fast as possible down the then narrow streets of Papal Rome), they would afterwards resort to a comfortable brothel which paid service tax to the Vicar Apostolic of Rome. It is regrettable sin, but the feminist or moralist repression of the oldest profession just never works except to make some people feel self satisfied and positively harms those who end up as sex workers.

Oh yes, and we must get ready for Russia and North Korea setting off an atomic bomb, so let’s all return to the True Faith. And look where the True Faith has got us. I wish this man would just shut up and go away, although he’s perfectly free to speak his mind, I guess. His perfectly packaged message of true Christianity as he see it is a nonsense, full of sin, venial and mortal, of confession, of knuckling under to an overarching and dominating culture that is clerical led. We’ve gone past that, thank you. It’s yesterday’s nonsense that got us to where we are now dealing with the criminal damage that he and his brother priests and bishops did to young people, the vulnerable, pregnant single women, orphans, you name it. How dare he be so bold and sure of himself. He should be walking around in sack cloth and ashes doing penance for the wickedness that he and his world vision visited up us.

A drink at a bar or walking the dog would be a more spiritual thing than that freakish rubbish. Now this might be rare, but milder variants can be found far too often, but neither the dull efforts nor sad novelty work in most parishes. Even many older people no longer bother. They see with their own eyes not just abuse scandals but a deliberate, considered effort to conceal perverts or treat depravity as a passing disorder (like Brendan Smyth and his psychiatric treatment in the 60s courtesy of the dreadful Rosminians). It doesn’t seem too holy. It seems unholy, in fact.

I’ve heard a homily or two on the process of becoming a bishop. The priests make clear that many priests will turn what Fr patently regarded as a poisoned chalice. Someone overly clever can be perceived as disruptive and no team player and if Canon Collins is to be raised from the priests of the locality, the hope might be for continuity and steady management. Given that Catholicism ranges between dying and dead on these isles (this or that small community with an effective pastor doesn’t change that), a continuity appointment is not wise, but it’s predictable. Hopefully he proves to be the rare bishop with a sense of urgency.
I wonder how effective collections boycotts would be, but money appears to be the primary concern for them, so it might be the only way.
