THE MARRIED CATHOLIC BISHOP WHO ATTENDED VATICAN II.

Salomão Barbosa Ferraz (18 February 1880 – 11 May 1969) was a Brazilian Roman Catholic priest and Bishop whose career took him through membership of several Christian denominations from the Presbyterian Church to the Roman Catholic Church.

Biography

Ferraz was born in JaúBrazil on February 18, 1880. Originally a Presbyterian Minister, Barbosa Ferraz was ordained an Anglican Priest in 1917. He founded an ecumenical society, the “Order of Saint Andrew”, in 1928, and was instrumental in organising a ‘Free Catholic Congress’ in 1936. At the close of this event he established a “Free Catholic Church” and was elected as the church’s first Bishop. The Second World War halted his plans to be consecrated Bishop by European Old Catholics, but Salomão Barbosa Ferraz was eventually consecrated Bishop by Carlos Duarte Costa following this Bishop’s excommunication by the Vatican in 1945. Barbosa Ferraz was also a member of Freemasonry

Salomão Barbosa Ferraz in turn consecrated Manoel Ceia Laranjeira for the Free Catholic Church of Brazil in 1951, but sought reception into the Roman Catholic Church, which he achieved under Pope John XXIII, leaving Manoel Ceia Laranjeira at the head of the Free Catholic Church, then renamed the Independent Catholic Apostolic Church in Brazil.

In 1959, Ferraz was received into the Roman Catholic Church. His reception met with some resistance and confusion in Rome, where it had been assumed that he was widowed or chaste. He was eventually named Titular Bishop of Eleutherna in 1963 and took part in the Second Vatican Council. Bishop Ferraz died in 1969, leaving a wife and seven children.

Ferraz was a rare example of a legally accepted married bishop in the modern Roman Catholic history.

PAT SAYS

Truth is stranger than fiction.

Here was a Vatican II bishop who was both a husband and the father of seven children.

He may not have been the only one.

I’m sure there have been many secret ordinations and consecrations down the ages.

THE DAVIDEK ORDINATIONS

In the 40s and 50s, in Czechoslovakia married men were ordained bishops and women ordained priests to keep them hidden from the communist regime who had placed the Ordinary bishops and priests in prison.

Interest in Davídek greatly increased when it was disclosed after his death that, by the account of Ludmila Javorová and others, he had administered the sacrament of holy orders to Javorová and about four other women. Bishop Blaha declared any such ordinations would have been invalid. Pope John Paul II, in his 1994 apostolic letter Ordinatio sacerdotalis, wrote that “In order that all doubt may be removed regarding a matter of great importance … I declare that the Church has no authority whatsoever to confer priestly ordination on women and that this judgment is to be definitively held by all the Church’s faithful.”

Other priestly ordinations, even of men, during the period of persecution were possibly invalid, illicit, or irregular, according to church teaching.

The irregular situation of priests in the Czech Republic in active ministry, but the validity of whose ordination was in doubt, was largely resolved by 2000 through discussions with the Vatican. In February 2000, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a declaration on the subject, announcing (a) that with regard to celibate priests, a great part (some 50 in all) had accepted the decision of the Pope that they should be conditionally re-ordained, and (b) that a further 22 priests who were married should also be conditionally re-ordained and transferred to the Byzantine-Slav rite as members, for all purposes, of the exarchate of the Czech Republic. There remained the status of some of the bishops and priests secretly ordained who had not accepted the norms (for conditional re-ordination) approved by the Pope, specifically because they were convinced they had already been validly ordained. While the Vatican confirmed that “conditional re-ordination” did not exclude the possibility that the men had previously been validly ordained, it held to the view that the doubts over validity were genuine:

A few Orthodox jurisdictions now have Married Bishops , and others are at the start of looking at this question .In regard to the Catholic Church or even the Orthodox Church, who in the end is the real minister of Ordination ? If we accept the Divine Grace i.e God is through the Bishop , the correct ritual is used , and the intention is clear ,and the candidate is ordained without force , and God will correct anything that is lacking than all such ordinations have validity to them , and are of equal value , and importance to any other ordination .

Hey, Conry was a good as married to several women, flaunted them around the place, took them on holidays. Nichols takes his nun with him wherever he goes, and you can bet they will settle in to retirement digs together when the time comes. Lots of bishops have ‘special’ people around them in their households, either male or female, ordained, religious or lay. Longley has had his Dominic with him for years. I bet that’s a bundle of fun. ! A few bishops have a penchant for Brazilians and other exotic types !

Damn nurses my arse! This is the first time EVER, U.K nurses have threatened strike.
Wait until you need hospital care with not enough staff to look after you, I can assure you it will be a stressful experience.
They should have gone on strike years ago, generations of nurses working for a pittance, not properly protected, spinal injuries, and exposed to all kinds of dangerous chemicals, at one time, having to even clean up ca-ca with their bare hands.
Working through the initial Covid infection, it must have been horrendous probably the straw that broke the camel’s back, this generation of nurses have a far higher expectation, what a disappointment it must be.
I say good for them, I support this strike 100%, there is never a right time for hospital staff to go on strike, now is as good as any.
Similar to the garbage men ‘s strike, “You never miss the water ’til the well runs dry”
Apart from the fact, there is nothing to entice candidates into nursing, poor pay, miserable working conditions, long hours (12 hour shifts) include 12 hour nightshifts, with never enough staff, often going without breaks, with a completely useless governing body.
What smart girl with a degree would want those condition? Fewer and, fewer, understandably.

Well said QP. There are many nurses in my extended family, including both parents, now deceased. Speaking recently about their working experiences with some whom I know to be caring, responsible and dedicated, I can only agree.

Actually it could also prove that the one or more clerics who troll Pat Buckley with stupid comments have time to do so today. Since some days are spectacularly bad with the atmosphere of a cottage, like today, I suspect they either have a day where they compete with each other to see what they can get him to publish or it might simply be one priest especially pissed off that he has appeared here.
Why do I say this? Because not one comment has been about the blog subject today. 😂 So the change in quantity of comments is caused by something else.

I don’t think Dominic does the cooking. They have a nun for that (Luke ?) and a professional cook. As to his other uses – bodyguard, nephew, bag carrier, driver, secretary etc – I’m not sure how good he is at any of them. It just sounds like they’ve settled in to a nice arrangement that suits them both and plan to carry on with it. One problem is that there are some young bucks out of Oscott and all full of themselves that would love the cache of being the A/b’s secretary. It was always seen as a mark of being chosen, as someone to keep an eye on, someone identified early as potential leadership material. They are not getting a shot at it, so there is some resentment. Walsall, Dudley, Stoke on Trent……or A/b’s secretary ,… what would you choose ? Perhaps Nursie is hoping that he will just be left alone for another seven or eight years, and Dominic can stay with him, and he’s probably hoping that he won’t have to move back to Westminster and take up residence at Ambrosden Avenue. Looks unlikely these days after his dim performance at IICSA. I’d say he really doesn’t want it. So, my view is to expect no change, and all the young boyos hoping for preferment should just get on with their jobs, even if they are waltzing around in lace and satin, using Latin that they don’t understand, and…..well, you get my drift ?

He sometimes wondered, he said, “why it is that, when we were studying theology here [in Maynooth] in the 1980s, we didn’t anticipate what was about to happen in the Church – perhaps we should have; was it because, in our studying and reading of theology and philosophy, we didn’t engage enough in open discussion and dialogue, or really grapple with the big questions of the day for the Church and its mission?”
