PAT SAYS
There is a massive difference, morally, between sexual intimacy in the context of a love filled committed relationship and what people have come to call “recreational sex”.
As Andrew Lloyd Webber has written: LOVE CHANGES EVERYTHING.
And, as a recent German bishop very wisely pointed out – sexual intimacy based on attraction and love making is not an abberation.
Bible thumpers and right wing RC dogmatists, whether they like it or not, are from the Fred Flintstone School of Theology and as Father Faber once pointed out – magnify God’s strictness with a zeal He (God) would not own.
The Bible is many things but it is NOT a manual of science, medicine and psychology.
The Bible is the Word of God written in the words of men.
A golden thread of the TRUTH AND WISDOM OF GOD runs right through the Bible.
It is a book of poetry, parable and myth – in the true deeper meaning of the word myth.
It is NOT to be read or taken literally.
It is a dangerous book in the hands of literalists, bigots, fanatics and religious nuts.
And may God Himself preserve us from foaming mouthed Protestants and rabid Roman Catholics.

When I was young, in the seventies, it was still “illegal”, but that never stopped anyone, not in the slightest. Guys who became serious about each other or fell in love used to call their relationship an “affair”. I met quite a few couples who were involved in affairs, but generally, they never lasted more than five years. They were never monogamous. Mind you, I made a point of never involving myself sexually with anyone who had an affair going on.

This troll geezer regularly takes every opportunity to bash anything to do with social work.
Like all professions, social work has its misfits and incompetent. But the work done , often with the most challenging and difficult clientele, (often inarticulate poorly educated and unable to gain much public sympathy) is perennially hampered with insufficient resources, both staffing wise, and facilities wise; Foster carers, children’s homes, residential care homes etc, etc. Combined with relatively low salaries, and the opprobrium fostered by the right wing media, it’s no wonder staff morale is so low that the increasing pressures cause many able committed staff to quit.
But all this scenario is neither of any interest nor comprehended by small minded trolls of low intelligence such as this one regularly spouting off here.
I think we should just ignore his future sw diversionary comment. I will.

Social workers intervene in the lives of some of the most vulnerable citizens in our communities. To suggest abuse corruption and coverup in social work is due to misfits incompetence and lack of resources is total complete and utter disingenuous nonsense. Blaming clients lack of educational attainments right wing media or insufficient resources is no excuse for abuse unethical professional practice or coverup of abuse.
The social work profession like the RCC need to take responsibility rather than making excuses. Maybe social workers are another bunch on a ‘learning curve’. Did Charlie Haughey with pius platitudes tell us to tighten our belts while he bought expensive french shirts and Ben kindly gave him a load of money because Charlie was poor in money .In the same week that Ben was promoting confession the U2 rock band was also promoting confession by asking fans to confess to a video camera and the confessions were then screened during the concert for all to see . This is the true story of how love triumphs over ignorance, bigotry and religious fanaticism: The year is 1970. The setting is a rural village in West Clare. The main characters are a middle aged Irish gentleman farmer of Anglo Irish descent and a Roman Catholic woman born and raised in the local village. Back in the 1970s, interfaith marriage between Protestants and Catholics in rural Ireland was not very well received. In a heartfelt letter written by the gentleman farmer to his cousin, the farmer relates that he has spent over an hour discussing with Bishop Dr. Michael Harty his desire to marry the RC woman with whom he has fallen in love. Bishop Harty makes it clear that the only way the gentleman farmer can marry the RC woman is if he ‘signs away any children to the RCC’. The couple eventually marry in the RCC however after the birth of their firstborn, they decide to have the child baptised in the COI. The young mother feels tremendous guilt over the fact that she went against Bishop Harty so she goes to Confession, pours out her soul, and the PP responds by walking out of the Confessional. From that moment onwards, the young mother never went to Mass again and only went into the Church if there was a funeral on. The interfaith couple loved each other very much and lived in harmony for over twenty years. The gentleman farmer predeceased his wife and was buried in the local COI graveyard. The wife died many years later, was waked, had a RC funeral and was cremated. Her ashes were interred in the grave of her Protestant husband by a RC priest. The current PP in the village is a well respected man. He speaks very candidly from the pulpit and has asked this year’s Confirmation candidates to take a pledge against drugs and bullying. He also stated that it is ok to criticise the Church—kudos! The only way to bring about real change is to speak openly about what is going on in the RCC. Thank you to Bishop Pat for giving us a platform whereby we can do this.

Bishop Pat is the only priest I trust. Unfortunately the rest are a bit too inclined to play mind games and there’s a shifty aspect to them, and if you disagree with them they turn cold and shun, which is an emotionally immature attitude, I think.
I’ve met Pat in real life and he came to see me in hospital when I couldn’t get a priest of D&C diocese to come, and he had helped me previously over the phone with a very difficult issue at a time when I was unwell mentally and morally.
His advice was very straightforward, challenging and surprisingly traditionally moral, all delivered kindly and in great humour. He changed the direction of my life for the better and that also helped people around me, especially at home. I came off the drink and I haven’t missed a day off work with sickness ever since and all my reckless behaviours stopped.
I subsequently worked through some other issues with a therapist, which also helped, but Pat was my great help and support at a low point and put me on the road to recovery, which thank God has been continuing for nearly four years now. Thank you, Pat!

Thank you, I’m 2.30pm. I meant to add (and I hope I’m not misrepesenting Pat in my recolkection) that the chief takeaway message I took from Pat was to be honest with myself and others because the burden of lies was too much to bear and my behaviour and depression were in part at least a response to that burden and inner conflict. Lies also hurted others, who have their rights to hinesty and authentic relationships.
He told me that being honest would be difficult, perhaps even alarming for me because I wasn’t used to it and it would be uncomfortable to go through, but the prize at the other end would be worth it. The temptation is to stay in a disorded way of life (ie drinking and mindless, degrading promiscuity in my case) out of habit or as a comfort, or for fear of the outcome from being honest. It was important to get support during this process, he said.
He also advised me to be patient and gentle with myself, to laugh at the sometimes farcical and messy side of being human, start to feel emotions, however uncomfortable, and realise that people are a work in progress and will make mistakes, have regrets and guilt, will hurt others and be hurt, and life will still present challenges. Adding lies to the mix puts 24 hours a day pressure on a person, and being honest is something we can do something about, and will make life’s challenges easier to cope with.
