THE HUNGER STRIKERS AND IRAN.

A Reader writes

Dear Bishop Pat,

Further to our exchange of WhatsApp messages, I write outlining a sequence of events that took place during my recent visit to Rome because you wish to utilise the correspondence for a blog posting. As a consequence, I am going to be careful, because we are dealing with very sensitive matters. I am mindful of the on-going sectarian divisions in Northern Ireland and the extreme sensitivities surrounding the situation in Iran at the moment.

Following a concelebrated Sunday Eucharist in a church near the Vatican, a number of the priests and pilgrims along with myself had breakfast. Midway through, we were engaged in conversation by a young woman of Middle Eastern appearance. I noted that she wore a crucifix so I presumed she was a Christian. However, as the conversation developed, it transpired that she was from Iran and that she was a Muslim. When we learned this fact all of us were surprised because the wearing of the crucifix by Muslim is akin to apostasy. And as the conversation developed, I was not surprised to learn that the woman in question had cut her hair in an act of solidarity with the protesters in Iran. As the conversation unfolded, I felt sufficiently comfortable to ask about her wearing of the crucifix. She replied that she saw Jesus as a figure of liberation, so for her, the cross did not have any salvific/theological significance, however, wearing it was a profound political statement. We have this opinion of Iran being a deeply religious country, but it seemed to me that secularisation is well-developed, and the younger generation are rejecting the faith/religiosity of their parents.

Some minutes later, the woman in question asked about our countries of origin. When I replied that I was from Ireland, she immediately steered the conversation to Bobby Sands. To my absolute amazement, she told me that Bobby Sands has become a significant almost totemic figure in the political protests currently taking place in Iran. He is seen as somebody who took a principled and ideological stand for the greater good of his community at a terrible personal cost. His willingness to sacrifice his life in the pursuance of the cause of Irish freedom has real resonance with the young people of Iran who are seeking greater liberty in that country. I have been struck by many of the interviews with young people from Iran that have been broadcast on the BBC that they are willing to die to achieve greater personal freedoms. Also, they make no reference to invoking the divine when they make these kinds of statements. And for that reason I can instinctively understand why Bobby Sands has gained such traction in that country, but I appreciate this is possibly pure supposition on my part.

It is, however, the case that Bobby Sands is not an unknown figure in Iran. There is a street dedicated to his memory in the capital, Tehran, where ironically the British Embassy is located. Also, his memory was invoked by the Iranian regime to serve its own political ends, so he is not a remote figure. On the island of Ireland, Bobby Sands is a deeply divisive figure. To some, he is a convicted criminal and a terrorist; to others, he is a martyr for the cause of Irish freedom and unity whose heroic sacrifice will be perennially recorded in the annuals of Irish history. Nevertheless, it is interesting to see how his contested legacy has been transformed to become a positive and inspirational force for good by a younger generation of Iranians. That, too, is a paradox of our age.

Bishop Pat, I am, however, mindful that you have a personal interest in Bobby Sands, because you were one of the priests who ministered to him in prison. Of course, I would never ask you about your relationship with Sands, because I presume you heard his confession. Also, I am sure you also tried to persuade him to end his hunger strike. But I did some research on Google this morning and I was surprised to see an interview with you talking about Sands referring to his hunger strike having a salvific/Christ-like quality. Therefore, I am of the view that you should contact a professional historian to give a detailed account of your interactions with him because we are dealing with a significant and important figure and period in Irish history that should be recorded for posterity. You too, are not going to live forever!

My conversation with the young woman in Rome was all too brief. Rightly or wrongly, I took the inference that Bobby Sands is an important and inspirational figure for young Iranians as they struggle for greater freedom in Iran. I, too, also took the inference that Sands in Iran is a secular Gandhi-like figure devoid of any theological significance.

PAT

Dear Reader,

Thank you for interesting correspondence.

I have never forgotten my encounters with Bobby Sands and his NINE companions.

One Sunday I said Mass in the prison and a prison officer asked me to take Holy Communion to a prisoner in the hospital wing.

It turned out to be Bobby Sands who had the strongest of possible Catholic faith.

After giving him Communion I asked if we could talk.

He replied: “As long as you’re not going to preach at me”.

I reassured him that preaching at people was not my style.

We had a very long conversation and after that I went in to say Mass for the ten of them every Sunday.

I did celebrate the Sacrament of Penance with them and of course I cannot discuss that.

But I am totally convinced that Bobby Sands was morally of a very clear conscience.

He said to me:

“Two seconds after I die I will open my eyes and will be looking into the eyes of the only man who will ever completely understand me”.

I do NOT believe that the Hunger Strikers deaths were suicide.

And Bobbs Sands in particular absolutely believed in the words of Christ:

“No man can have any greater love than to lay his life down for his friends”.

Having used every other means at his disposal to defeat what he saw as his nation’s conquerors and torturers, he was left with only one last weapon – his life.

I did not share all Bobby’s political beliefs but I admired his naked courage.

Afterwards I attended the Hunger Strikers funerals and suffered serious opposition and persecution from my fellow clergy for doing so.

The Northern clergy, with a few exceptions like Des Wilson and Joe McVeigh, were very anti Republican- SDLP supporters.

I was not particularly Republican but was acting totally out of compassion and care for my people.

Where the people are, the priest should be standing with them in solidarity.

Why do you disagree, Pat? Did Sands have universal support throughout the island of Ireland for his slow suicide, and the reasons for it? We both know he didn’t, so, why do you disagree with my claim that he died simply for his way?
Sands was a fanatic, and these people cannot be reasoned with.

Perhaps with benefit of time, it’s possible to better understand his motivation. After years of negligent intransigent Thatcher dominated Tory rule, there seemed few options to those men on “the blanket.”
Reading Richard O’Rawe’s excellent book, “The Blanketmen: An untold story of the H-Block Hunger Strike” offers an insight into then realities. I recommend it.

Interesting article on Iran and Bobby Sands . People can have their views on Bobby Sands but one thing beyond doubt is he was a man of principle and a man of faith. A rare thing in modern Ireland. Sands starved himself to death, yet you, Pat, do not consider this suicide? Incredible.

This isn’t about knowing best, but about historical fact. Sands suicided, and suicides are commonly considered cowards.

Pat Buckley failed this man by allowing him to die in the absurd belief, by the teaching of his own church at the time, that Sands was acting with moral nobility.

+Pat, you are to be commended for your empathy and warmth in dealing with those brave men. They were without question, men of very strong values and principles, who believed in the principles of equality, freedom and the right to self-determination. It’s appalling that other clergy could not be as Christ like as you are, though observing many of the clergy in D&C, it’s clear that they wish to become members of the oppressive English establishment. How wonderful that, Bobby Sands, a true son and patriot of Ireland has become such a symbol across the world. Having tried every option at his disposal, he laid down his most precious life for the sake of Ireland. I strongly doubt that, Ireland has come to terms with the full heroic story of the Hunger Strikers and their most noble of causes, despite what some may claim, they were not failures but have much yet to contribute to the liberation of this country from our so called colonial overlords. There will be no question that Sands did open his eyes again and beheld the loving gaze of the one who knew him better than he knew himself. May all the hunger strikers rest of perpetual peace, without them there would be no peace on our great island.

Oh dear, sounds as though the letter writer here was treading on dangerous territory. I think I’ve learned, especially from the news of the last few days about the encounter between Lady Susan Hussey and the Sistah Space (really ?!) one, to be very careful asking anyone of any difference where they are from ! You have to be so cautious these days. Any misstep, even any perception of one gets you labelled as racist, and once that accusation is made it sticks and you can’t wiggle free from it. Ms Sistah Space knows this and knows the power it gives her. So, I’m not surprised that the Sistah Space one took offence and acted on it, not because of the awkward missteps of an 83 year old, but because I reckon she’s on the lookout for perceived outrage and offence all the time and knows that it will put her in the centre of attention and bestow on her power and influence. I doubt if Sistah Space is a very comfortable place, especially if you are white, male, straight, in work, fluent, capable and reasonably able and normal. Best avoided, I think. Mind you, I think Philip would have put Ms Sistah Space in her place, and she wouldn’t have dared take him on ! But, I guess an 83 year old posh lady is easy prey for Ms Sistah Space. I hope it makes her feel better !

9:44 It does and so it should. Prince William has confirmed that there is no place for discrimination of any kind including racism in today’s world. The Roman Catholic Church is riddled with old crones similar to Lady Hussey stubbornly convinced that they can continue to get away with breaking the law on behalf of the agenda of their abusive led organisation without legal accountability. The biggest crooks retire citing ill health or old age to escape justice – the very weaknesses they used to exploit others in their own hey day. Their self entitlement knows no boundaries. Prince William is a man of principle who has disowned his godmother, Lady Susan Hussey, as a consequence of her disgraceful bullying of the Head of Sista Space on Tuesday. Good for him.

+ Pat, it’s World Aid’s Day, and I would have thought you might have said something about that ? Bobby Sands and the hunger strikers could wait another day, surely ? Anyhow, I think there could be an opportunity here for you to remind the readers of your blog, especially the sexually active clergy, about the responsibility of looking after themselves and others and preventing the transmission of HIV. We are aware that many clerics engage in risky and dangerous behaviour, such as the bareback rawhide activities of Purcell, but there will be many others. They should be reminded that they have a responsibility to themselves and particularly to others in their pursuit of their own pleasure, but that it is easily possible to do, at least in respect of HIV, by accessing easy to use and safe HIV medications, either as PrEp or PEP. The other little itches and rashes and infections they can pick up along the way are not deathly and can be treated. But, catching HIV is serious, and so easily avoided. As is not passing it on to unsuspecting others. If you are careful and take the right medications. However, clerical arrogance, exceptionalism and lack of accountability will make this message difficult to get across to the sexually active clergy. Talking about it on your blog might just knock a few heads together.

Do we know how many clergy have died of HIV ? Do we know how many priests are currently HIV ? I know three or four for sure, all getting it by lives spent cruising around in lay-bys, woods, saunas and other kinds of casual places. All still a bit full of themselves and arrogant. I sometimes wonder if they have learned a lesson, but doubt it looking at them. What worries me is the danger that they might be putting others at, because they don’t shown any sign of letting up. You can’t talk to them about it, because that risks crossing confidentiality boundaries, and they would just ignore it anyhow. So, I guess blogs like this might get through to them and help knock a few heads together ? But, maybe not. You know what clergy are like !

10.27: Yours is a very partisan, bigoted comment. What worries me are the risks taken by married men who don’t have any care for their partners or families. Any port in a storm for them. As for promiscuous gay men in general, they ought to know the risks and exercise moral norms. Priests are at risk of receiving fatal infections too from meeting men so casually. ALL who engage in free for all sexual activity are endangering one another. Let’s be honest and truthful.

Well said! Just the other day on this blog, we had a man bragging about his duplicitous double bisexual life. I commented on how horrible it is for anyone one who is bisexual and, does not take precaution to prevent the spread of HIV, a chronic illness, is unforgivable. I stick to that statement.
Pat you say you forgive the person that you contracted your condition from, you are a far more charitable person than I could ever be.
Because we don’t know of Roman Catholic priests dying from AIDS doesn’t mean it doesn’t occur, they don’t have supernatural immunity, no more than ourselves. They are as susceptible as the rest of us.
Priests are human beings first, and, priest later, and are subjected to every weaknesses, foibles, illnesses as we are.
Prayer is no protector of disease.

10:02 deviant clergy have zero regard for the safety of others – after all the Roman Catholic Church has a long history of endangering others at will. Hundreds of thousands of women and children and vulnerable persons have suffered and died at the hands of these wolves in sheep’s clothing to date and ongoing. A danger to society.

Like

10.02: Pat shoukd highlight the dangers if careless sexual encounters. That danger can befall anyine, not just clergy. Pat has the experience and knowledge. The danger of any sexually transmitted diseases is the risk taken by those who are sexually irresponsible and whose sexual appetites are insatiable. Many still take risks despite warnings. I had a gay friend who had a long term partner but he met other men, mostly married, as often as he could. Not right. Pat will need to pitch his message not just at clergy but at a much wider constituency – married men, gay men in relationships, single men…

10.50 A long time ago I knew a clergyman who told a number of us that he was no better than we were, because of claimed (and unsuitable) details which he described while attempting to also implicate someone else vulnerable. At the time we wondered whether he was trying to i, pull us down ii, kid us into thinking we had an officially endorsed and holy carte blanche iii, start a semi-public and mutually demeaning confession craze. He had been trained in all this partly abroad, and partly by others trained abroad. Come to think of it, we were indeed being given an officially endorsed and holy carte blanche, bravely opposed by the bishop of the place at the time and his successor. (I’ve no idea whether that padre is alive these days, I’m not much interested.)

Do you recall the commenter ‘Flurry Gin’. He posted here earlier this year. He boasted of heterosexual married men who had ‘entered’ him.

This revolting excuse for a human being (and an ex-seminarian) actually defended helping these men to cheat on their wives by claiming that his liaisons were secret and, therefore, hurt no one.

as a direct consequence of clerical sexual abuse. All the hierarchy now

Bobby Sands blatantly didn’t commit suicide he was on hunger strike in protest at not being treated as a political prisoner.
Of course political action, a hunger strike, throwing oneself in front of a horse etc can result in loss of life – this loss isn’t the taking of a life but the giving up a life for a movement or a cause.

Interesting stuff today about gay, bi, married, men who have sex with men etc, and HIV, infections, responsibility or lack of it etc. My view is that sexual activity for the most part is a moral free zone. Perfectly natural, part of our inclination, just like eating, sleeping, or shitting. The act itself is morally free. It’s the peripheries of the act that lead in to ethical and moral territory. How it affects others, how it is in line, or not, with relationships already established and vowed, how it can lead to disease transmission. These are the things that need to be thought about carefully. In the context of priests engaging in anonymous and promiscuous sex, the emphasis should be, perhaps, on what this does to their professed relationship of fidelity, loyalty and celibacy to the Church and to the faithful. Seems to me that it drives a horse and cart through those. We know that already. In a more particular context of today’s discussion, namely HIV, clergy have the same responsibility to ensure not only their own sexual health but, also perhaps even more importantly, the sexual health of those with whom they engage. There is a definitely a moral judgement to be made there if they are casual, careless and irresponsible. As there is for married me who have sex with other men. That is why the call earlier for men who have sex with men, who are promiscuous, and who engage in casual anonymous encounters, should seriously consider the aides that are available to them to help minimise the dangers. PrEP and PEP. Or abstinence ! Those would be good moral choices. The issue of their relationships and loyalties is another matter, but at least ensuring that they were not a physical danger to their loved ones would be a good start.

Stories re rcc kept giving us more and more.
From these stories on this blog and elsewhere on the Internet, I have to conclude that rcc was/is a criminal organisation especially at the top. They get away with murder umpteen times. Recent Netflix documentary on girl age 15 as her friend said he’s much closer to PVI.
As far as I’m aware that UN have banned the Vatican, just an observer status.

4pm Only God really knows how many innocents have been exploited, manipulated, abused, slandered, libelled and they & family injured or murdered by members of the Roman Catholic Church. They will never be held to account for forging travel documents of mother & baby home children trafficked abroad to their unvetted networks in return for payment or for continuing to send child maintenance invoices to single mothers working in England falsely leading them to believe there might be an opportunity to get their child back. Deprived cruelty and blatant dishonesty via the brides and grooms of Christ.

Jesus, knew no sin, an innocent Lamb of God, became as sin to reconcile us to the Father.
Poor Bobby Sands, like us all fallen and frail, yet courageous and noble died for his cause, I believe a just cause.
Jesus’ death on the cross is unique it cannot be compared to any other no matter how noble.

VICTIM LOSES HIGH COURT BATTLE TO ESTABLISH WHETHER PAEDOPHILE PRIEST WAS INFORMER
Alan Erwin
December 01 2022.
“A victim of paedophile priest Malachy Finnegan has lost a High Court battle to establish if he was a police informer. The man challenged the PSNI’s policy of neither confirming nor denying the deceased cleric’s suspected role as an agent. But a judge rejected claims that the force had adopted an inflexible position in breach of human rights.”

8:31 Seminarian Mark Nestor, a former Clare County Councillor, was sent to Valladolid in Spain in September 2022 by Diocese of Killaloe.

This Irish seminarian was being hassled by Fr Paul Farrar and the hate campaign operated by gay Mafia and their supporters in Valladolid seminary. It begs the obvious question as to why any gay person would join a Roman Catholic seminary when Pope Francis has reconfirmed yet again that homosexuality is against the specific rules of the Roman Catholic religion. It is most unreasonable for these seminary thugs and bullies to gang up on well intentioned seminarians who are committed to keeping to the teachings of the Roman Catholic religion. It’s clear that the corruption and the gay Mafia are destroying the RCC from the inside out.

You would be surprised what people would be prepared to go through or the lengths they would go too for a belief or a principle . Provided it’s in good faith and harming no one except themselves.
This is not about Bobby.
Or raving lunatics ranting.
Remember the refugees in the system here for years back yrs ago they took to the church starving themselves on hunger strikes to make a point they got no where. All over the news , to highlight how the system let them down . Bring them here But let them rot Yrs trapped in a pit waiting for acceptance into society . They were frustrated. Government committed but didn’t follow through.
Remember the woman from cork who walked half the country to get her daughter medically approved for cannabis treatment for her child who was having multiple seizures a day . She got it in the end , it wasn’t the walk that got the government to make an exception for her , it was the publicity surrounding it.
History says a lot of things and speaks volumes .
United we can make changes, divided we can’t.
But if history says anything and speaks it’s only takes one to make a change or dare try.
The system is corrupt and frustrating , guardai ,health system , church .
‘Its not what you know it’s who you know mentality and yes it’s a factor.
You need to be the one to prove them wrong.
Good for him he stood up for what he believed.

A quote from Blanketmen by Richard O’Rawe:
‘I had to get the death notice ready for the local paper. I wanted to highlight Bobby’s philosophy of life: They have nothing in their whole imperial arsenal that can break the spirit of one Irishman who doesn’t want to be broken.
Bobby had drawn this quote from Leon Uris’s novel Trinity and adopted it as his own.’

Shame Michael flatley didn’t acknowledge you on the late late show within a week after the funeral you celebrated that he attended. Apparently you did a great service. I have no doubt.
I’m sore this won’t be approved either.
