SHOULD RCC CHARITY TROCAIRE BE TAKING A POLITICAL STANCE IN THE ISRAELI / PALESTINIAN CONFLICT?

New Irish Anti-Apartheid Campaign calls on Ireland to take action on Israeli apartheid against Palestinians

The three recognised tests for the crime of apartheid are:

1. an institutionalised regime of systematic racial oppression and discrimination;

2. established with the intent to maintain the domination of one racial group over another; and

3. which consists of inhumane acts as an integral part of the regime.

THE JEWISH VIEW OF TROCAIRE’S POSITION.

https://m.jpost.com/opinion/article-709206/amp

PAT SAYS

In many ways the Israeli / Palestinian problem is like the Irish problem.

You have two sides claiming the same piece of land and no great effort at finding a solution.

In fact, in Northern Ireland Republican areas they fly the Palestinian flag and in Loyalist areas they fly the Israeli flag 🙄

I have been to Jerusalem twice and fell immediately in love with the city. The Jesus connection blew me away.

On both occasions I also travelled to the Galilee area and to Tel Aviv.

I made a point of attending a synagogue ceremony and also visited the Dome of the Rock mosque.

Our tour guide was a Jewish woman and I invited her to put the Jewish position to us.

The driver was Palestinian and I asked him to talk to us about the Palestinian position.

I am not on either side.

I think that both Jews and Palestinians have a right to be there.

And I believe that the solution has to be a TWO NATION SOLUTION.

And I understand that Jerusalem itself is a big issue.

As is the Dome of the Rock mosque on the Temple site.

TROCAIRE ?

Should Trocaire be involving itself in the politics of the conflict?

On the one hand you can say that Trocaire is a charity and should stick to charitable matters like providing food, water, shelter, employment, training, health etc.

On the other hand you can say that JUSTICE is very much the business of a Catholic charity.

Trocaire’s own logo says

WORKING FOR A JUST WORLD.

And the great CND leader, Monsignor Bruce Kent once said

BRUCE KEBT

“What is politics except how we organise our daily life. And Christianity must care about about people’s daily lives”.

We Christians should want Justice for both Palestinians and Jews.

But it often hard to get people to agree on what justice is, especially in inflamed situations.

100 replies on “SHOULD RCC CHARITY TROCAIRE BE TAKING A POLITICAL STANCE IN THE ISRAELI / PALESTINIAN CONFLICT?”

There are two different things going on in the question.
Trocaire can of course involve itself in whatever it considers justice.
BUT
The state defines legally what a charity is and if you don’t stick to the rules you can’t be a charity.

I think that European debt toward the Jewish genocide from Hitler, Nazis, and all their supporters has been cleaned. Not only RCC but all the politicians worldwide should join to protect the injustice that Israelis are committing against Palestine! If they didn’t gain wisdom through their suffering, it is harsh and rude to say, but if they fail to show mercy to Palestine, they might deserve what they went through during WWII. It sounds like German was the only one who saw their true face…
this is to make a point, because in another way what German did against Jewish communities is unforgivable for many generations to come…
Arent Jewish doing more or less the same years and decades against Palestina?? What did they learn from their own pains and injustice???

Thank you Pat for your moderate views about TROCAIRE. I think some commenters were trying to be cynically and maliciously suggest wrong doing by this charity. TROCAIRE has a track record in its work which must always be accompanied by a sense of justice for the most afflicted and oppressed. Its MERCY and COMPASSIONATE outreach must be underpinned by GOSPEL JUSTICE. It’s the one charity I support all the time. Its political stances are not taken lightly. TROCAIRE is deserving of our support.

Just wondering if the blog’s commenters who dislike Bishop Monahan and his role with TROCAIRE were/are hoping there may be a scandal so as to down him. There are nasty creepy anti Bishop Monahan clowns on this blog. TROCAIRE is a well respected charity throughout the world. Other charities like CONCERN, GOAL and The Irish Missionaries Union often make political statements arising out of their work with oppressed peoples. Well done to their valiant courage for justice.

The claim that Israel is an apartheid state is extraordinarily illiberal: the Palestinians are saying that the area of the Jewish homeland, from which Jordan ethnically cleansed the entire Jewish population in 1949, must remain indefinitely or permanently Judenrein (“free of Jews”), and that Israel itself must enforce a “Jew-free zone,” to humour the Palestinian demand for a state pre-cleansed of Jews. The Palestinian position is one of apartheid.

Pat Buckley, we take offence at the constant jibes about sources of church money and property and about clergy failing to house Ukrainian refugees. Here in Kerry, the Kerry Diosecan Youth Service – KDYS Killarney has provided accommodation services to date to the value of €636,870 for the financial period April to September 2022. In doing so, they have eased the impact in our area as indeed we ourselves have done our bit.

But he became a sort of a celebrity which was the downfall for him.

Now trocaire has a history of misuse of funds going back from Bishop casey or perhaps further cos no accounting controls existed at that point.

Trocaire is seen as a Catholic Church with a financial agency. Also suspect that there is a relationship between a despot govt and Catholic Church re charity money. Ethiopia and Yemen which comes to my mind.

It’s silly to say I expect this charity to take responsibility for all crises- I never made such a statement. You did. Trocaire is an ‘institute of the catholic hierarchy’. The hierarchy’s track record on justice towards abuse victims/survivors is not exactly exemplary. Trocaire has a campaign called ‘Build Back Better’, an interesting choice of slogan. The term was coined by Klaus Schwab founder of the World Economic Forum, architect of the Great Reset and leading promoter of the New World Order. Pope Francis endorsed the NWO. Are Trocaire tacitly promoting the NWO…?

More silliness. Don’t be so disingenuous. Trocaire is an institute of the catholic hierarchy. My initial comment drew attention to injustice in the church. The hierarchy treat victims/survivors of abuse appallingly. As far as I’m concerned, hierarchs lack credibility, regardless of what boards or committees they sit on, but particularly a board claiming to promote justice. They need to practice what they preach.

Holy Ghost Schools, Glenstall….appearing in the last few days in the litany of schools where abuse in various forms took place. Surely, it is time for a comprehensive investigation in to all schools run by religious orders and by dioceses so that we can fully understand the extent of the abuse that has been infected over the decades, rather than it just dripping out bit by bit ? Then, the issue can be addressed for the perpetrators and the victims, and hopefully then we can move on, although not forgetting what has happened already. It seems to me that there is not a limb of the Church where abuse has not been endemic. If the limbs are rotten, then the core must be rotten too. I am rapidly arriving at the conclusion that the Church, certainly in Ireland, is not fit for purpose and should be closed down. It cannot have a credible future given is rotten core and limbs. Most particularly the clerical ones. than what ?

The real reason they keep blaming Vatican 2 for their decline, rather than their own relentless criminality, is they want to have back the deference to clergy that pertained in the past and the attendant reluctance to criticize them as you have done.

Not at all, no angst at all against Trocaire charity, no more than any other, I am very cautious giving money to charities, as there has been so much embezzlement, in the past from many of them.
I think my statement is valid, donors are impressed by the images in advertising, irrespective what is being shown or, sold whether its a charity or, a holiday. Therefore its vital that the image shown is a representative means of showing where the money will end up. Not some government. I do not object to money being used for example for medicine or, clean water, ect. In fact I donate to those type of charities myself.

BECCIU CLAIMS FRANCIS WANTS HIM DEAD!

“(Steven O’Reilly) – I recently commented on what I found to be some oddities and incongruities in the case of Cardinal Becciu, particularly the behavior and actions of Pope Francis toward Becciu (see What does Cardinal Becciu know about Francis?). My article ended about there.
But the very last line I wrote in my article was:
“I suspect we may see more oddities and incongruities emerge in the back and forth between Francis and Becciu before all is said and done in this matter.” Hah. We did not have to wait long. Just now, I read an article wherein it is said that Cardinal Becciu told a family member back in July 2021, just before he taped his conversation with Pope Francis (see here), that “he (Francis) wants me dead”.

Sides?
One side is a nuclear power, funded to the tune of billions of dollars per year by the USA, illegally occupies all land between the Mediterranean and Jordan River, imprisons 2 million residents in Gaza, is statistically killing far more opponents (by a factor of around 60 to 1 over the course of the last 50 years), applies military law on one part of the population while applying civil law to its own citizens, expelled 750000 from their homes in 1948 and teams of thousands more in 1967, refusing them a right to return, demolishing or stealing their houses, towns, villages and farms and on and on.
The other side is the Palestinian people.
This is not a ‘conflict’, a ‘clash’ or anywhere close to comparable with the north of Ireland. This is Apartheid. Trocaire, Amnesty, B’Tselem among others have reached that conclusion after years of experience and study.
There can be no peace without justice. Israel has killed the two state solution. One state with equality for all citizens is the only just solution now but the viciousness of successive Israeli governments means this is a long way off.
Pat, I get your desire for ‘balance’ but there is none here. This is a one sided regime of occupation and Apartheid. Look into the laws and practices that have led to Amnesty and others reaching the conclusion that this is Apartheid. They are many and they are brutal.
Although the vast majority of Jewish people arrived in the region within the last 70 – 80 years, and did so unjustly, I do accept that they have a right to stay, but they have no right to declare an ethno state amd deny the Palestinian people their right to live as equal citizens in an agreed state. Many Jewish amd Israeli people would agree.
