Francis Protects Prominent Jesuit Priest Accused of Sexual Abuse of Nuns

Father Marko Ivan Rupnik, a Jesuit artist who founded the Centro Aletti for East-West cultural dialogue in Rome, has been accused of sexually abusing at least three nuns in Slovenia in 1992 and 1993.

The Italian publication Left has reprinted an August 2021 letter by a former nun to Pope Francis—a letter that she said has received no response.

According to an accompanying article—which relies on an anonymous source—the alleged abuse came to light after a 2019 Vatican visitation to the Slovenian religious community to which the nuns belonged. The Congregation (now Dicastery) for the Doctrine of the Faith reportedly began to conduct a trial, “but then everything remained on hold for a long period between 2020 and the end of 2021.” Early in 2022, the Congregation reportedly issued its ruling, and the Society of Jesus has imposed some restrictions on his ministry.

In 1996, Pope St. John Paul II entrusted Father Rupnik with the task of directing the renovation of the Redemptoris Mater Chapel in the Apostolic Palace. In 2016, Pope Francis celebrated Mass at the Centro Aletti to mark the center’s 25th anniversary. In 2020, Father Rupnik took the place of Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, the preacher of the papal household, in delivering a Friday Lenten sermon to the Pope and members of the Roman Curia.

The sexual abuse of nuns by bishops and priests is a very under reported RCC scandal.

And yet it is a very old and universal scandal.

And there is a history of bishops and nuns making nuns pregnant.

In the past especially nuns were very vulnerable to clerics. They were second class citizens.

I can remember saying Mass for nuns and staying afterwards for breakfast and I was treated like a pope or king.

Convents were full of estrogen and the sense of frustrated motherhood was very noticeable.

Also, nuns could be very unkind to each other.

Many nuns became emotionally attached to priests and were easy prey.

But that does not give any cleric the right to use or abuse them.

Did you not abuse nuns by your retrospective language? You refer dishonestly towards them. In our day teachers hit us – laity and religious. Nothing new. I do not agree that nuns should be imported from poorer countries to act as housekeepers and cooks for bishops or priests in Rome. That’s an abuse. The Slovenian Jesuit has questions to answer. His behaviour is shameful.

“But that does not give any cleric the right to use or abuse them.”
The abuse of anyone is obviously wrong. The perpetrators must be brought to justice. The obsession with minimising scandal isn’t just for abuse crimes. A priest merely speaks out. Ray Browne cut down the priest. All to minimise a perceived scandal. What was the scandal? Has Ray Browne confirmed that he will be offering blessings of love for the LGBT+ community?
Tom Deenihan then banishing the true Prior of Silverstream to the wilderness for merely calling out wrong doing and double life characters. Shame on Tom. Most unChristian.
Phonsie then embarrassingly supporting the wayward abbot. When the abbot and abbot general resigned, Phonsie was completely exposed to embarrassment.
Ray, Tom and Phonsie are an absolute disgrace. They should resign. There needs to be a clear out of bishops who have clearly shown that they cannot be trusted. Episcopal leaders must lead with integrity. Is that asking for too much?

2:10 Abbot Richard Purcell could do no wrong in the eyes of his friends, Abbot Coffey, Bishop Monahan & others. The visitation was predictably ineffectual, just a front because they felt they had to be seen to be doing “something” when it became impossible to shield the antics of Rawhide from the public eye. Of course, true to form, Roman Catholic hierarchy don’t give a damn what abuse or wrong doing their members deliver on the unsuspecting public, all they care about is covering up any hint of the truth being revealed because that lowers their income. Sick and twisted clerics obsessed with money & strange depravity in forests, church altar at midnight & bondage rooms in priest saunas & whatever else we don’t yet know about. They are obviously extremely angry that anyone finds out about it so engage in intimidatory behaviour & attemot to make themselves look like the victims so vigorously supporting the morally and legally reprehensible actions of their colleagues and associates.

In this week’s issue of The Irish Catholic, Bishop Tom Deenihan has said Christmas is a time to invite people who may have stopped coming, back to the weekly worship.
His comments come as Church leaders are increasingly concerned with a drop of as much as 50% Mass attendance in some parishes.
There is an opportunity for people to encounter Christ “in the Eucharist, in the church, in the community, as well as on the computer screen” this Christmas, the Bishop of Meath said this week.

Like

I don’t know what ‘encountering Christ in the weekly worship’ means. On the solemn feast of the Immaculate Conception fifteen parishioners (of a large D & C Parish) were treated to about twenty minutes of a rushed mass. Father hardly drew breath from start to finish, no sermon, no prayers of the faithful leaving me wondering what I came out for. I mean, the feast warrented a more prayer celebration.
Sundays are usually a bit better but the sermons are read from a script which I suspect he copies from some book he has on his desk. Nothing comes from the heart and nothing comes from his lived experience of Jesus. Bland, lacking committment to a prayer life and certainly has no connection to our struggles as we go about our daily chores trying to respond to the challenges of the gospel.
If God is good and I know he is, he must have a plan to get us through all the difficulties faced by people in every corner of the world; our problems coping with inflation but more especially the people of Ukraine terrorised by Putin, not to mention the people of parts of Africa plighted by corruption and famine. Surely the Church (Pope, Bishop, Priest and theologians and each of us) should be crying foul from the roof tops and mobilising a responce in the name of Jesus.
My understanding of the Bible is a story of God’s constant love for everyone throughout the world irrespective of gender, race or creed. We fail the challenges of responding to that love and throughout history his priests and prophets have encouraged a change of heart and a new committment to him many times over. Now is a time for those priests and prophets to stir our hearts and give us hope.
Weekly worship is one thing but its credibility depends on living out the gospel, dying to the old self and being born again into a new way of living together. Instead of bland sermons we need brave teaching and social action as part of our parish experience. There are notable examples of spirit filled responces which are regularily trotted out when our church is challenged but they are not enough. I live in hope our church can adequately respond but I fear it’s time is up.
However, if each of us pray: ‘Create for me a clean heart, O God and put a new and right spirit within me’ (Psalm 51), there might still be hope.

The sexual abuse, including rape, of religious sisters and nuns by bishops and priests was highlighted by Sr. Maura O Donoghue in an extensive research report in 1994. Of course the Vatican ostriches buried the report. What’s new in the Vatican! Ireland was included in Sr. Maura’s report. Sexual abusive acts, including rape, are extremely serious criminal offences but are also grievous boundary violations of another person’s bodily integrity. A perpetrator who commits such criminal acts is far more likely to commit such boundary violations again. I often wonder how many unreported rapists walk the streets of our country, including those claiming to be ‘ontologically changed agents’ or men who were mitred.

It’s another example of clerical power, authority and exceptionalism taking advantage of those lower down the food chain and taking what they want. Yes, these priests got their rocks off, but more importantly they lauded over their victims through power and control. Which is why it is necessary for clergy and their culture to be brought low. This blog is a good start at that. But, that process won’t be complete until the clerical structure itself is dismantled and demolished and clergy have to stand by themselves and accountable for their actions, past and present. Rupnik et al have got away with it for too long, but it is good that, at last, the past is catching up with them. He probably thought he was good, and going to get away with it. Well, it’s a salutary lesson to any priest that eventually you will be found out. So, beware !

While priesthood (hierarchy) remains in the Church, these, and other abuses, will continue.
Safeguarding commissions and suchlike are not the magic bullet for restoring moral credibility to the Church: there never was any such credibility, except arguably in the very early stages of the Church’s life.
Set up as many safeguarding commissions as imagination and inclination allow, but until it is accepted that priesthood itself brings out, encourages, and facilitates the worst in human nature, the Church will remain in perpetual moral darkness rather than the light to which Jesus originally called it.

According to Peter Murnane, the historical claim about clerics being different has created a power structure in the church and resulted in the church becoming a hierarchical pyramid of several strata: bishops priests deacons and laity. He defines clericalism as attitudes and culture that excessively idealize the role of clerics and gives them preference as persons as if clerics are superior to other members of the church. Clerical privilege makes sexual abuse more likely and has led most bishops to conceal it. In effect clericalism has created a caste system in the church. Fr. Peter Murnane is the author of Clerical Errors: How Clericalism Betrays the Gospel and How to Heal the Church.

Ontological change of clergy is the fake decoy from theosis for all believers, making laity without any hope in Christ or Holy Spirit, giving synodalists their false opening to accuse us of “lack of conversion” and no or unformed conscience as defined by them – and this was not at all what parishioners input when coming forward 18 months ago.

JESUIT PRIESTS DEMAND TRANSPARENCY IN VATICAN ARTIST CASE
By Nicole Winfield
December 7, 2022
“ROME (AP) — One of the Vatican’s leading Jesuit advisers on preventing clergy sexual abuse called Wednesday for church authorities to shed more light on the case of a famous Jesuit artist who wasn’t sanctioned by the Holy See after he was accused of spiritually abusing women during confession. The Rev. Hans Zollner said the recent statement by the Jesuit order about the Rev. Marko Ivan Rupnik “raised questions that, as far as I see, can only be answered by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.”
“Zollner said it was his “firm belief that transparency in the Church, including the Society of Jesus, is essential in order to combat the scourge of abuse in all its forms.”

There is many things that people can help out in any parish in the Roman Catholic Church as the Mission of the Church is to allow the Clergy to do the roles they are Ordained for and that is the Sacraments of the Church.
So most important training is given where needed and some of the roles in every parish needs your help
Safeguarding, Cleaning, Finance,Readers, Welcomers, Sacristians, Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, Admin, Music Players and Singers. Parish Councils and the list goes on.
It is the people’s Church.
