COLOGNE CARDINAL AND THE COVER UP OF SEXUAL ABUSE.

WOELKI

An unprecedented crisis of confidence is shaking a historic centre of Catholicism in Germany — the Archdiocese of Cologne. Catholic believers have protested their deeply divisive archbishop and are leaving in droves over allegations that he may have covered up clergy sexual abuse reports.

1.8 MILLION CATHOLICS

While Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki’s personal fate is in the hands of Pope Francis, the drama has reverberations nationwide, given that the Cologne archdiocese has more Catholics than any other in Germany — about 1.8 million. Its double-domed cathedral is an iconic tourist attraction and one of the oldest, most important pilgrimage sites of Northern Europe.

And the crisis in Cologne, in which many thousands of Catholics in the region have left the church, is in some ways a microcosm of the issues playing out in the German Catholic Church as a whole as it undergoes a profound and controversial reform process precisely to respond to complaints by rank-and-file Catholics about the hierarchy’s responsibility for the clergy abuse crisis.

Some archdiocese employees have refused to attend meetings with the archbishop. Congregants of a Duesseldorf parish in the archdiocese raised red cards in protest when he visited last year, objecting to him administering the sacrament of confirmation to their children.

Dozens of altar boys and girls from the archdiocese turned their backs in protest to Woelki when he celebrated Mass with them during a trip to Rome in October. The choirs in the archdiocese recently reported a loss of 30% of their members, which they say is partially related to the coronavirus pandemic but also a clear repudiation of Woelki.

In the latest escalation, Cologne prosecutors last month opened an investigation against the powerful conservative cardinal in two cases on suspicion of making false affidavits. In each case, the question is whether Woelki, 66, had been informed earlier than he stated about allegations of abuse against certain clergymen. The cardinal rejects all accusations against him.

Even influential German politicians who normally steer clear of church politics have spoken out.

The minister for youth and family in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, where Cologne is located, said she viewed the situation with bewilderment.

“Especially those in positions of responsibility must not look the other way and they must certainly not deny or cover up,” Josefine Paul said last month in a speech in the state parliament.

The church is expected to be a preeminent model of morality, and it has “set the highest moral standards for all kinds of people in society — does all this no longer apply to a bishop?” Tim Kurzbach, chairman of the diocesan council of Catholics in the archdiocese, told The Associated Press.

Kurzbach, mayor of the town of Solingen in the archdiocese, said he knows of several long-time parishioners who are leaving the church because they can no longer bear “the moral decay” in Cologne.

REPORT HIDDEN

The crisis of confidence began in 2020, when Woelki, citing legal concerns, kept under wraps a report he commissioned on how local church officials reacted when priests were accused of sexual abuse. That infuriated many Cologne Catholics. A second report, published in March 2021, found 75 cases in which high-ranking officials neglected their duties.

The report absolved Woelki of any neglect of his legal duty with respect to abuse victims. He subsequently said he made mistakes in past cases involving sexual abuse allegations but insisted he had no intention of resigning.

TIME OUT

Two papal envoys were dispatched to Cologne a few months later to investigate possible mistakes by senior officials in handling cases. Their report led Francis to give Woelki a “ spiritual timeout ” of several months for making major communication errors.

RESIGNATION

In March, after his return from the timeout, the cardinal submitted his offer to resign but so far Francis has not acted on it.

“I don’t think it got through to Rome how much the people here are suffering,” Kurzbach said. “Without a decision on the Cologne cardinal question, we will not get out of the crisis. The question must finally be resolved.”

The issue was raised when Germany’s bishops visited with the pope last month. The head of the German Bishops Conference, Limburg Bishop Georg Baetzing, told reporters that “it was made very clear that the situation in the archdiocese is increasingly unbearable, even for the archbishop.” The wait for a papal decision also is burdensome for German Catholics, he said.

In the interim, they are exiting the church in record numbers. Some 44,772 Catholics in the Cologne archdiocese left in 2021, up from 17,281 in 2020, according to church figures.

Nationally, the number of Catholics leaving the church has also risen dramatically. Some 359,338 left in 2021, up from 221,390 in 2020. It is still the largest faith group in the country. About 21.6 million Catholics live in Germany, which has an overall population of 84 million.

“It’s clear that this is a difficult situation,” Cologne archdiocese spokesman, Juergen Kleikamp, told the AP last week. “But that’s just the way it is. In the Catholic Church, the pope has to decide and no one else.”

Meanwhile, Woelki is “doing his work to the best of his knowledge and also with great commitment,” Kleikamp said, adding that while some Catholics “are angry and quarrel with their church, there are others who applaud and rejoice when the bishop comes.”

Many Catholics, however, doubt the crisis can be easily fixed any time soon — even if the cardinal resigns.

Lay leader Regina Oediger-Spinrath, 61, called it “an absolute crisis of trust and credibility.” She is a spokeswoman for the professional association of pastoral assistants in the archdiocese, and thinks the crisis goes beyond the Cologne situation. Oediger-Spinrath said fundamental changes are needed, including more equality for women and LGBTQ people.

“Leadership needs to be rethought,” she said. “The way it is in the Catholic Church, that is absolutely hierarchical, some also say authoritarian from the top down — I believe, that many people no longer want to go along with that.”

Those demands are in line with the reform process, known as the “ Synodal Path,” the German church launched with the country’s influential lay group, the Central Committee of German Catholics, to respond to the clergy sexual abuse scandals after a 2018 report found at least 3,677 people were abused by clergy between 1946 and 2014.

Preliminary assemblies have already approved calls to allow same-sex couple blessings, married priests and the ordination of women deacons. The movement, however, also sparked fierce opposition from the Vatican and conservative clergy in Germany and elsewhere.

While Oediger-Spinrath says she is ready to fight for changes, others have lost patience.

“I will leave the church,” says Peter Barzel, 65, a member of the St. Margareta parish in Duesseldorf. He helped organize last year’s red card protest during Woelki’s visit.

Barzel, an active parishioner for decades, also tried to bring more attention to recent sexual abuse allegations lodged against two former St. Margareta pastors that have roiled the parish. Eventually, he gave up.

“I will certainly miss something when I leave the church, because the Christian faith is something you share with other people,” he said. “But I can no longer support this system.”

PAT SAYS

I think it is crystal clear that the cardinal’s resignation is a must in order to resolve the present conflict.

But there is a bigger issue in Germany

The German Church has had a very detailed synodal process, and most people in it want a more progressive and liberal Church

LGBT issues and especially the blessing of some sex couples, are a major issue.

The Germans are in direct conflict with Rome on these matters.

The situation could easily lead to a schism.

Fair play to the Germans. They have stood up to Rome and fancy Cardinals. Wouldn’t it be lovely Pat to see people in Ireland stop paying money to Armagh and Dublin? Change is a coming.

I agree Patsy that there will very probably be a schism in Germany, but it wont come from Cardinal Woelki who is one of the very few Catholics left in the German ‘Bishops’ conference. It will come from the ultra liberal elite brigade where anything goes. I think the deplorable Ray Browne should join that lot he’d be very much at home.

If I were a govt minister, I would get ruthless with rcc.

First thing I would do is strip them of their charity status and treat them same as any business with full tax rate.

Thats way forward until they change their behaviour as regards to reporting, misuse of funds, putting victims at the forefront instead of themselves.

They are masquerading as ‘charity’ front cos they have millions in their bank accounts. Charity business in my terminology such as tight with money as they needed help as regards to ‘charity’.

STILL they as rcc want our money week in week out on Sunday church cash collections with no accountability, can be fiddled with, cash collection gives rcc lot of scope to deal with cash which could be v difficult to trace it.

Rcc could be termed as a’ property asset management ‘organisation. That monies belongs to the people who funded it, NOT the bishops. But that monies is taxed at a charity tax rate with loads of properties to run if you get my meaning. This implies it isn’t a charity organisation by their actions such as managing assets. Kilmore diocese gave a us a demonstration of it.

Think France govt got it right. They are an astute nation.

You can add an external audit of finances, audit and publication of the secret archives and tagging all clergy.
In reality of course merely taxing them would make them go underground pretending to be persecuted and howling, because they’re a SCAM and nothing else.

Ptsd is bit deadly if you deal it wrongly. It’s brutal assault on the mind and also psychological effects on the body as well. Hence my long struggle with ptsd until recently. It’s much easier now as I’m calmer, cooler although I sometimes get hyperviligance at odd times cos something triggers off at me.

Need to know your trigger points to deal with it, otherwise, it’s huge battle.

Its quite tough journey for me personally as I slowly got into grips with it over the years and handle it. If trigger points start to ring bells, I just walk away with it.

7:39 Deaf Guy, your contributions to this blog are very much relevant and valued by other victims and survivors – as based on your own personal experiences in the Roman Catholic education system – that’s why you attract the wrath of the cover up merchants. They only read this blog to prepare their defences in case the law catches up with them one day. Their contributions on this blog & elsewhere confirms that there is zero interest or commitment to the core values of human rights or equality in the RCC. The German people are voting with their feet but as long as the RCC continues to play it’s game of withholding redress to victims & survivors, claiming international tax reliefs and government grants to heat their large buildings when they can well afford to self-fund heating/lighting/including current renovations/new builds etc., instead they & their cohorts spend their time stalking and harassing any perceived threats to their cozy arrangements, they take advantage and exploit vulnerable persons and situations for their own interests – in short a completely abusive, parasitic and toxic Roman Catholic Church that deserves to be continually called out until it stops paying lip service and actions tangible solutions to all those whom they have wronged and continue to deliberately do so via various means. No doubt they would love it if anyone that threatens their cozy lives & arrangements would disappear. The term sabbatical has its own unique meaning in the RCC, usually is proved to be actioned on public discovery of clerical engagement in sexual or financial wrong doing.

Its just that I need a break from this blog. Also considering emigration as well that’s why I need to think though before I make a big decision.

Starting to realise that rcc no longer has a hold over others as its loosening over time.

Don’t think jesus did approve the Vatican, nowhere was it said in the bible. So I came to a conclusion that’s a man made organisation with its own set of rules aka as’ Canon law’. Its similar to any huge conglomerate organisation with its own culture and rules(business rules) . Also have massive financial power to transfer monies between their small holding companies or subsidiary companies.

Bishops offices are like ‘subsidiary companies’ with Millions in their bank accounts BUT still they want OUR CASH on a weekly Sunday basis cash collection. They can’t have it both ways. Something has to give.

CEO is the figure head of any conglomerates such as Pope is a figurehead of the Vatican with no financial expertise to boot.

But conglomerates have off shore accounts which is par for course. I’m wondering if the Vatican bank have an off shore accounts with no taxes.

I realise the Vatican is masquerading as a front. Its a political and economic organisation as a charity status.

I read somewhere that Italian govt has the right to revoke the concordat agreement made in 1929 I think but I could be wrong there.

The way to stop rcc and also dioceses as well is stop giving them money cos they have millions in their bank accounts, what more do they want 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️.

I took the word ‘sabbatical’ from a movie called “spotlight ‘which charts the documentary of Boston globe on rcc’ abuses’. It was fascinating to watch BG reporters going into libraries searching for rcc directories etc. What they have found was lots of SABBATICALS or on leave. That’s how I came across that word.

Best documentary on abuses so far up to now in my view is ‘mea maxima culpa’. Cos its quite powerful visually and also hard hitting as well. It dawned on me that the Vatican knew it all along for years when I watched it first time. PBXVIwas the culprit as he held loads loads of abuses files on his watch since 1980 and he did nothing which practically finished me off. I don’t see him as holy just bec he covered it up, period.

There was an unknown movie called ‘St vincents’ which was very similar to cabra as my friends were saying it. But I couldn’t get hold of that movie ever since. Major TV stations won’t show it except for ‘sleeper’ movie (theme was revenge on abusers but a true story with bit of screenplay).

I really wish there was a laugh icon on this blog, for all the serious discussion, it can be funny at time. I have a good laugh to myself at some of the comments, just like yours today. I have thought Woelki looked a bit odd, he is peculiar anyway, he looks in some pictures as if he’s wearing a thatch, and as for those glasses, I image him to be overtly eccentric.
He is going to miss his elevated position in Cologne, of course he covered-up, as has every other Bishop/Cardinal, because that was company policy from Rome, and Francis for all his verbosity on prevention of child sexual abuse, continues to protect those criminals who he admires, or those he regards as a friend. Not an admirable, honest, exemplary trait, from the Boss man, his behaviour more in keeping with the mob.

Thanks re your comments.
I’m ok and in recovering mode. I’m somewhat calmer now as I realised Ireland doesn’t offer me anymore after bloody hell journey when I was turned upside down when full blown ptsd was set off many moons ago. I didn’t understand why was I getting this and that re pstd until I saw a movie called ‘full metal jacket and platoon’. These movies deeply seared into my mind as I understood what they were going through. It was sort of empathic way. Then I suspected that I had it. So I wait for few years re pysch and then he confirmed it. But it wasn’t over cos I nearly hit him on the rage. I didn’t know what came over me at that time. Then a friend of mine felt the same way as me re pysch. In other words, he was the problematic pysch with sheer arrogance. Friend of mine flipped him upside down cos he knew the car, a jaguar a private make, very expensive. He shattered him re his private jaguar with price, model that can’t be obtained by garage cos he’s used to be car mechanic. He knew his stuff as pysch was shattered.
So i had to start all over again with 2nd pysch. This time was very comptent pysch who’s used to giving pysch med expertise opinion in supreme courts. It hammered the nail through re ptsd, no doubt but couldn’t give me ways to treat my ptsd. So I had to some study and research basically on one book by Bessel van der Kolk.
Now I have contacted a pysch with signing skills in UK recently in order for me to go forward in terms of progression. It will take some time cos I’m on waiting list. But that’s not the reason for emigration.
Just a starting point for me personally and from there, I don’t know where will I go. Cos Ireland doesn’t offer any good opportunities for myself despite my degree. The only way is abroad cos i have worked abroad as they have treated me fairly, equally as other normal person (which I won’t get that here cos employers attitudes which in turn came from rcc attitudes (top down). Cos they think deaf people can’t do it etc etc.
Also much less trauma abroad as I realised it. Also I am aware that life isn’t a rehearsal. Life is tough (quote by Scott peck book).
It will take some months thinking and deciding the big risk that I am about to take. I felt at peace in last few months, calmer but I’m aware that ptsd could come back. Hence my contact with pysch in UK as a starting point or 1st step to move out of Ireland and rcc itself. Its no easy solution but I’m hopeful though.

Can we English join the German Synod please? Especially for their rejecting of the extraterritorial Vatican’s crushing of our baptisms, our consciences, our conversion and our mission, fussing over our spirituality. The Vatican city never did own those. The Germans by contrast aren’t putting the boot in us. (BTW I think religious leaders should pull out of marriages organisationally.)

DCS page 7 para 13: /// The DCS will be understandable and useful only if it is read with the eyes of the disciple, who recognises it as a testimony to the path of conversion towards a synodal Church. ///

I.e you are no longer a disciple if you don’t convert to the Vatican City state. This is not what good bishops anywhere requested 18 months ago. The DCS goes on to equate itself semi-unobtrusively to the Word Of God – whilst stealing the real thing out of the mouths of children.

The city state relies on unbelief in Holy Spirit and curated ambiguity, to reduce good bishops and clergy to the same abjection as laypeople and, since the mid 19 th century, to impose its theocracy politically, destroying Jesus’ and St Paul’s (real) version of unity. Then it accuses those who value real tradition, and who care for the faithful, of “causing disunity” (reversing the roles of champion and adversary).

The vatican City is even contravening those hastily thrown together farragoes, the CIC and CCC. (Much “doctrine” is newfangled canon law, rebadged.) No probs, the steady and constant Church is going to “re-re” update those! Come back St Catherine of Siena! Power grabs are against Nature. Jesus, Saints Paul and James, and the prophets, always called for assertion – and they assumed principle.

Pat, while I am abhorred at the way you treat some clergy, I have to admit that if it was a choice between your blog and Robert Nugent’s videos, I’d choose the blog. Having watched so many of his recent videos, I find him iverbearungky preachy, rigid, ultra conservative and he now comes across as another “ine” who’s having mystical locutions all day. His most recent video with a Scotsman from Time Out Is about 1 hour 33 mins long. I think he Is way OTT and i cannot understand how he finds so much time preparing for and presenting his videos. After yesterday’s blog and his response to you……vomit. He has a knack for Messiaship!

ABUSE “WHISTLEBLOWER” SAYS “FORGIVENESS” IS OFTEN A PRETEXT TO SILENCE VICTIMS
(VATICAN CITY)
La Croix International [France]
December 9, 2022
By Xavier Léger

“A response to Fra Bernard-Marie, a secular Franciscan who has argued that victims of sexual abuse need to forgive their abusers and get on with their lives”
“When a priest abuses a child, the most important thing is to hush up the scandal, not to deal with the problem, arrest the culprit and protect the victims. It’s like a driver who hits a who hits a pedestrian. Instead of helping the victim, he rushes to make sure his car didn’t get damaged in the accident. This is the absolute counter-witness.”

Yes to be sure he knows something is coming down the road to bite him on the arse – oh kinky think he’d rather like that but seriously it’s only a matter of time before a few bishops (or even not a few) are gaoled and doing some porridge.
Jumped or pushed? Jumped!!

What are the chances Byrne secured himself his bishops pension and from the off knew he’d only do a few years – that was the plan all along me thinks.
He likes the good life and is a little rotund show off – he’d like to be treated in the manner to which he’s become accustomed.

I’m sure he has nicely lined his pockets. I saw him once on the Metro Tram in Newcastle and he’s not that chubby. It’s all the vestments he wears – cassock, alb, dalmatic, stole and chasuble. He loves to play at dressing up and it makes him look like the Michelin man….
