PAT SAYS
It is nice to see a prelate like Archbishop Malcolm respond swiftly and with such positive information.
And ++ Malcolm is big enough and confident enough not to engage in any pettiness with regards titles, etc.
It is good that the Robert Byrne allegations will be examined by the police and Vatican.
Let us hope and pray that Truth and Justice will be done.

Hello Pat and all my blog friends- good Christmas cheer to you, and I will raise a glass for you all at my local tomorrow morning. I see I was mentioned on the blog yesterday and as was pointed out, I’ve not been here in a while. Another stomach pumping episode, I’m afraid. Bit under the weather for the last week or so, but at least I enjoyed getting that way, and now I am fixed up and ready to go again. As usual the nurses were brilliant- you couldn’t pay them enough. Some anxiety for my liver, but YOLO after all- and I will eventually party with the angels. Wishing you all festive cheer and will have a toast in your honour dear Pat!

Malcolm’s swiftness is in complete contrast to Tom Deenihan who dillied and dallied for two months before reporting to the Gardaí. Tom even took the step of confirming Dom Mark as Prior before reporting the harassment to the Gardaí. How could Tom Deenihan report allegations of misconduct to the Gardaí while confirming the accused in a leadership position?
The Abbey of Saint Joseph de Clairval should withdraw their support of the Silverstream charade. Dom Benedict Andersen is the rock on which Silverstream could be rebuilt. Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Anything otherwise will be like rebuilding Silverstream on sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.

Oh dear! Is Miss Lucy a… liar? Would a holy nun knowingly tell untruths? Could she, as a bride of Christ? 😮Because, Pat, if your information source in Salford is as reliable as you believe, then (Oh! I can barely bring myself to say this.) it may be that Miss Lucy is… telling porkies to cover Arnold’s skinny ass! 😰
And to think I had such deference for Catholic religious and clergy, especially the most holy bishops.
Now don’t be cynical. I did… I mean I do… have respect for these people. God’s chosen ones. 😇
Maybe Miss Lucy is just missing the big picture. Maybe she’s, um, factually challenged. Which, of course, would have her miss the mark here, even by the proverbial mile. And through no fault of her own. Naturally. Now THIS is a much pleasanter penseé than believing she might willingly be disseminating misinformation for Mr Arnold, not to mention for his unmentionable part.

I’m glad that Bishop Byrne is being investigated but cautious McMahon willl follow through – he ordained Jolley and find it hard if not impossible to believe he’s an impartial judge of such matters – he’s a notoriously clumsy and gauche prelate (notwithstanding his polite response to Pat).
Feel sorry for the priest – the victim – the pressure willl be on for him to withdraw his allegation and of course all sexual predators know the threshold for evidence is high in criminal proceedings and unless substantive the case won’t see the light of day.
Personally I’d love to see an English bishop in gaol – it would send a message for a societal group who see themselves as above the law.
As for Sr Lucy – clearly Sr Rita was despatchrd by Arnold – Sr Lucy is rattled and classicaly imperious in her tone – a device of many nuns, a nod, I feel to her repressed dominatrix (she knows it, we all know it).
Arnold is rattled too and tge witch-hunt is on to find who blew the whistle..

There certainly will not be any desire for Archbishop Malcolm to withdraw his complaint and as stated it has been sent to the Police.
Give credit where credit is due Archbishop Malcolm has contacted the holy See for permisson to hold an investigation which should be granted quite quickly by Cardinal Ouellet or Cardinal Parolin then sent to the Holy Father Francis for the outcome.
Anyone involved in the Tribunals only wants Justice and I am sure you will find that hard to believe but it is a fact and remember tribuls are a mixture of Clergy and Lay Faithful and well trained.
The sitution in Canon Law like Civil Law is the complainer and witnesses need to stand by their accusations and not stop in the middle and i know cases that they even say they never said that but it is all recorded.
I personally think the Priest should stand aside while the investigation takes place and I think the Priest is the victim but it will be very challanging on him and the witnesses but God willing he will have the strength to see it through and byrne is kicked out by Pope Francis.
If you look at killaloe Bishop Fintan wants Ger and Gerry out but Canon Law is in place and hopefully removed 2023

For ease of reference, here are the rules for handling such cases, as set out in ‘Vos estis lux mundi’.
Interesting to read about the scope, timings for investigation, their definition of “vulnerable person” and the role of a metropolitan bishop.

I would have thought it makes it LESS likely +Byrne would get away with it. “Vos estis” firstly specifically allows for abuse of adults to be considered when there is an imbalance of power eg. Lecturer & Uni student, Bishop & parish priest. The definition of a vulnerable person as “any person in a state of infirmity, physical or mental deficiency, or deprivation of personal liberty which, in fact, even occasionally, limits their ability to understand or to want or otherwise resist the offence” is referring to the victim, not the perpetrator….

No Good Bishop of the RCC wants the bad apples no matter of the rank of the clergy they do not want them and that includes the daisy Chains and all the others that are up to NO good.
The problem in Canon Law is there needs to be proof and stand up and God willing this Priest will stand up and others come forward but the problem is “oh do not say I told you” syndrome or I never said that and it will not stand up and therefore the Bishop is reported for action against the Clergy.
There are many hard working dedicated Clergy in the RCC but the one bad apple starts to rot the cart but the younger / newer Bishops will take action (except what looks like by Bishop Tom D).
I pray for all involed as it is very difficult it what seems to be a horrible nasty case but I have Faith in Archbishop Malcolm and the Holy See and Justice will be done.

I find Robert comical. I know he doesn’t mean to be, and I know I shouldn’t laugh at him, but…
Let me tell you a tale, a true anecdote. I was once acquainted with a guy who claimed Jesus spoke to him. Now, he was utterly sincere, so I quickly ruled out any attempt at deceit and attention-seeking.
On one occasion, he showed me his medication. (Unsolicited, I assure you.) I made a mental note of some of it, and I looked it up when I returned home. Sure enough, as I suspected, he was on psychiatric meds. A huge red flag, but I still didn’t know the nature of his illness.
A few years later, he died. And during his funeral oration, the mystery of his condition was solved: my friend had been a chronic schizophrenic, which, of course, accounted for the voice of Jesus he claimed to hear.
I have no doubt we’ll hear a similar story about Robert Nugent in due course. And then won’t all those who put faith in this fellow feel very foolish indeed?
Thankfully, I put no faith in my schizophrenic acquaintance. I put NO at all faith in those who talk such rampant balderdash.
The religious are natural-born nutters, susceptible to any old ethereal garbage.

Interesting re Denmark, 1.3 % of total population are Catholics.
I was told its one of the most atheist country by far. The Danes viewed themselves as ‘spiritual’ rather than religious.
What’s striking to me is the absence of ‘mini shrines’ on the roads, laybys et al. Its totally devoid of all things Catholic externally.
But the Danes remains polite calm and respectful as I see them in shops, shopping malls, cinemas. Rcc church isnt seen from outside in the main town except for their spire which stood out in the sky.
Imagine that in Ireland with 1 Bishop, 72 priests and 5 deacons which is really dire. These numbers came from total figure for priests in Denmark.
Danish law forbids any converted Lutheran to Catholics back in 1589 but that’s gone now. The numbers in rcc of Denmark remains static ever since then.
Hopefully in Sweden few days time, it’s only 15 miles from Malmo.
Very accessible to person of any disability in Denmark re transportation with half price to that of full fare for any adultamd also priority seat.
Not many people with visible disabilities such as wheelchairs, just here and there. More of people with invisible disabilities such as myself.

Pat you shouldn’t allow Eamon to boast about his alcoholism and make it trivial. Your readers under 18 do not need this level of negative influence

Pat I’m not boasting. I’m spreading a little cheer and merriment and living my best life. Is anything wrong with that? Some people are wet blankets but i like to live for the day and enjoy the night. And if a wee beer helps me am I double any harm? Happy Christmas and festive cheer to one and all x

Pat at 4:18 I think he should be, especially as trolls on here are trying to make a fictitious connection to the archdiocese of Birmingham.

Bishop Robert Byrne was Auxiliary Bishop of Birmingham remember? Therefore if you’re a priest from Birmingham he used to be your bishop, remember? Oh and even if he resigns he still a bishop and will always be a former auxiliary bishop of Birmingham.

1. I’m not a priest of Birmingham.
2. I’m not a priest.
3. I’m not RC. Therefore he has never been my bishop.
4. He is a FORMER auxiliary bishop of Birmingham.
You might as well say that he’s still a pupil of his nursery school because he went there once. Probably spending longer at your school would have stopped you uttering such foolishness.
He, and you, are nothing to do with me and I repudiate you both.

As someone who is an alcoholic, I take offence at Eamons posts. It is a very serious progressive disease and should not be joked about by a troll Priest.

Why do you make the assumption that Eamon is a “troll priest” when he has said absolutely nothing to give the impression that he is a priest? He is clearly a troubled, vulnerable individual with a human weakness that affects so many around us, you cruel person.

Your analogy of nursery school and being an auxiliary bishop isn’t analogous – it’s facile and irrelevant – what is relevant is that Robert Byrne is the former auxiliary bishop of Birmingham prior to being made bishop of Hexham and Newcastle and what is simply true in fact is he was a bishop in Birmingham and therefore was for a period of time one of their bishops.
As for my schooling and attending your unnamed school – the quality of aman’s education doesn’t prevent him from bribing a fool and by resorting to abusive ad honimun my case rests.

Pat at 3:48 I think that’s the way it works for diocesan priests but I don’t think religious bishops leave their order.
They keep their letters after their name?

I know it’s innocent until proven guilty, but I’m afraid + Bobby is toast. There will be no coming back from this kind of thing. There must be something there for +McMahon to take it seriously, and for the Nuncio to have been involved in moving + Bobby on. I think the best outcome he will get is prayer and penance, he may even find himself laicised from episcopacy and priesthood. Whatever, I would expect the Cong Orats will have some responsibility and oversight for him. Rightly so. But,. as for the rest, well it does look a bit bleak. I’m genuinely sorry about that. Both for + Bobby and anybody else (an assumed victim ?) included. It’s just very sad all round.
