ST STEPHEN’S DAY / BOXING DAY.

St. Stephen’s Day (Lá Fhéile Stiofáin), or the Day of the Wren (Lá an Dreoilín) or the Feast of Saint Stephen, is a Christian saint’s day to remember Saint Stephen, celebrated on 26 December in the Western Church and 27 December in the Eastern Church around the world. It is praised the day after Christmas Day and is likewise known in Ireland, among different names, as Boxing Day and the Hunting of the Wrens.

In Western Churches the world over, St. Stephen’s Day is praised on December 26th, the day after Christmas. In Eastern Orthodox Churches where the Julian calendar is used, St. Stephen’s Day is celebrated on December 27th. St. Stephen was the first Christian martyr who died around the year of 34 A.D.

Saint Stephen is associated with being the first Christian martyr. Stephen looked after the poor people however was stoned to death in AD36 for lecturing the Gospel. His story is recorded in the Bible in the 6th chapter of the Book of Acts.

What is St. Stephen’s Day?

St. Stephen’s Day, or the Feast of St. Stephen, is a Christian saint’s day celebrated on 26 December, the day after Christmas Day. It remembers St. Stephen, the first Christian saint.

It is an official public holiday in Austria, Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Montenegro, Norway, Denmark, Estonia, Sweden, Finland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Poland.

The date is additionally a Public Holiday in those nations that observe Boxing Day on the day instead/too. In certain countries, it is called the Second Day of Christmas (or the comparable in the local language).

In Ireland Stephen’s Day is additionally called the Day of the Wren or Wren’s Day. This name implies a few legends, remembering those found for Ireland, connecting episodes in the life of Jesus to the wren.

THE WREN BOYS

Albeit not as commonly practiced as beforehand, in specific parts of Ireland individuals carrying either a likeness of a wren or a real caged wren (live or dead), travel from house to house playing music, singing, and dancing. Contingent upon which region of the nation, they are called wren boys and mummers.

A Mummer’s Festival is held as of now every year in the town of New Inn, County Galway, and Dingle in County Kerry. St. Stephen’s Day is additionally a well-known day for seeing relatives.

The Hunting of the Wrens, or Wrens’ Day, relates to the tradition of killing a wren on Saint Stephen’s Day after which kids may go from house to house auctioning off the wren’s feathers, or they might be chased or followed through the roads while special songs were sung.

The wren feathers were thought to bring the best of luck. Today, a fake wren is connected to a pole and individuals dress up in straw costumes and parade through villages and towns.

Another huge event on this day in Ireland is horse racing at such places as the Leopardstown Racecourse on the southern edge of Dublin. Saint Stephen’s Day is the first of four days of this event. A few people just go to the races, however, others buy packages that incorporate special seating, dinners, and racecards.

Indeed, even individuals race on Saint Stephen’s Day – with a 10-mile running race at Limerick that covers nation streets and dual carriageways. The race starts at Caherdavin, goes five miles to Cratloe Cross then returns an alternate way, and finishes less than a mile from its beginning stage.

In Ireland, banks, schools, and government offices are shut on this public holiday, however, numerous stores are open alongside bars and restaurants even though their hours might be different from usual. It is a decent opportunity for many to go out for meals with their families and companions.

While St. Stephen’s Day isn’t viewed as a public holiday all through the rest of France, it is kept as one in France’s Alsace-Moselle region. Remembering that the holiday isn’t typically kept as a festive day of activities and celebrations, it’s ideal to remember the origin of this old holiday.

Numerous Eastern Orthodox churches adhere to the Julian calendar and mark St. Stephen’s Day on 27 December as indicated by that calendar, which places it on 9 January of the Gregorian calendar used in secular contexts. It recognizes St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr or protomartyr.

In non-Commonwealth nations, the day is all the more normally referred to as St Stephen’s Day or the Feast of Stephen as referenced in the carol ‘Good King Wenceslas’.

Stephen was a Greek Jew who had changed over to Christianity. He was selected as one of seven deacons to assist with organizing the early Christian church.

Because of his proclaiming Christianity, he was blamed for blasphemy and stood preliminary at a Jewish court in around 34 CE.

During the preliminary he made a long speech, saying that Christianity supported the lessons of Moses. This so maddened the group at the preliminary, that he was dragged away and battered to the point of death by a crowd. It is said that the crowd was encouraged on by Saul of Tarsus, who later became Saint Paul.

The other St. Stephen was St. Stephen of Hungary, who was the first king of Hungary and is noted for changing the Magyar people to Christianity.

Good King Wenceslas

The feast of St. Stephen is most likely most popular for its appearance in the famous Christmas Carol, Good King Wenceslas.

“Good King Wenceslas watched out On the feast of Stephen When the snow lay indirect Deep and crisp and even”

Wenceslas was a King in Bohemia in the 10th century CE. Like Stephen, Wenceslas became a Saint after his death and like Stephen, even has his own public holiday.

The words to the carol were composed by John Mason Neale in 1853. The music was initially from a song about spring, famous in the 14th century.

How to celebrate St. Stephen’s Day?

Today, Italians observe St. Stephen’s Day in a variety of ways. While a few towns do hold parades like the one celebrated in Putignano, others order expound live nativity scenes or go through the day carrying food and gifts to the less lucky.

In Rome and other huge urban areas, cathedrals and churches make their doors for guests who wish to see the glorious nativity shows and the relics of saints held within. A day of feasting, celebration, and aiding those in need, St. Stephen’s Day is one of the happiest dates on any Italian’s calendar.

In contrast to other festive events in France and somewhere else, this day is somewhat subdued in correlation. Honored the day after Christmas, the feast day falls on December 26th, the second of the Twelve Days of Christmas as the second of two public holidays-Good Friday being the first.

Be that as it may, it is just honored in Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin in Alsace and the Lorraine département of Moselle. The rest of France, notwithstanding, doesn’t quit working.

“Christmas is a time of nostalgia and tradition when we invariably look back and remember. This year, as we prepare to celebrate once again the birth of our Saviour, we remember previous celebrations of Christmas and, in many cases, reflect on what we have lost and we remember those who are no longer with us.” – Tom Deenihan.
Why is Dom Benedict no longer with the Silverstream community? Why does Tom continue his persecution of Dom Benedict? How can Tom preach about Christmas when he continues his most cruel vindictive morally reprehensible treatment of Dom Benedict?
You hypocrite Tom! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”

Very hard hitting. Is Rec Deenihan that bad? Those whose responsibility it is to select bishops must have seen something else in him.

6.42: Seamusviii: You’d be better praying the Rosary or Morning Office than spouting your disdainful contempt for the Bishop of Meath. We’ve had enough of your protests. Go and seek out the man and talk with him. Your Christmas goodwill was short-lived. Indeed.

8:09, judging from the pro-Deenihan damage control in today’s comments, I’d say it’s far more effective for Seamus to chide Tom here than to make an appointment with him, which even if granted will just be an occasion for Tom to lie and gaslight.

You recognise the appropriateness of Isaiah well. Tom becoming a bishop was a bitter-sweet day. Happy to see him go. Sad to see him go as a bishop. He is truly one of the worst men I ever had in my social circle. A purely horrible character in how I used see him talk to and treat waiting staff while out.

Looks like you had the full Christmas dinner works, + Pat. What is the tableware ? Very colourful. I always remember my days in Rome when I was a student, and Christmas was a one day affair, with things pretty much getting back to normal the day after for St Stephen’s Day. I prefer that instead of the extended break that takes place here. Our local sourdough bakery has shut until after the New Year. Imagine the bakers shutting up in France ? There would be no business left when you reopened. Everything else seems to be closed or on strike at the moment. So, I’m expecting 2023 to be a difficult year all round, especially for those who cannot absorb the financial shock. Which is most of the population, with no savings, a mortgage, and relying almost exclusively on the weekly / monthly pay package.

6.42: Seamusviii: Have you any self awareness at all? For the last year you’ve been walloping Bishop Deenihan and on the Feast of Christmas, you cannot resist repeating your same old, obsessive disdain and dislike for the Bishop. Obviously you have now developed a hatred for the Bishop. You were challenged before about meeting the Bishop face to face to lay before him your grievances. You chose not to do so. Moral coward. Can you please spare us your faux indignation and rage from hereon? Your narratives are repetitive, boring and predictable. Go out today with the Wren Bits and have fun…your repeat comnents are torturous for us and must be for you too!! Get a life..

The word ‘bishop’ is a common noun and doesn’t require a capital letter when used with the article.
Readers might be persuaded by your designation of moral cowardice of a third party, if you showed some awareness of the irony of not putting your name to such a comment.
The word ‘faux’ seems to be your calling card here and its use is likely another example of irony on your part, to which you are oblivious.

12.32: Your pseudo corrections are superfluous to my comment. I merely stated that Seamusviii constantly beats the same drum, day after day about Bishop Deenihan. It is boring and repetitive. Your comment about the irony of my “anonymity” applies to you, to Seamusvii and to everyine on this blog. Using just Martin or anonymous doesn’t invalidate any argument. I might be persuaded too by your comment if you put your real name…Irony!! Semplice vome questo!!

No. The irony in your case is that you call someone a moral coward while not displaying any moral courage by making that allegation anonymously. I am not saying you are a moral coward. As a literary critic, I’m merely pointing out the figure of language known as irony. It’s not the pseudonymity of your comment which makes it ironic, by rather its content.
The Holy Goat’s view on Deenihan is far more damning than Seamus’.

Pádraig 10:30, why has Tom Deenihan not responded to Pat? Pat has asked many legitimate questions that must be answered. Other bishops have had the courtesy to reply to Pat.
Any update from the Abbey of Saint-Joseph de Clairval? They can withdraw their support for Deenihan’s Silverstream charade.

12.35: So Seamus, go to Bishop Deenihan personally. I agree that Dom Benedict has suffered a huge hurt of injustice. Go. Be brave. Pat has done his work. You do yours. NOW.

Has Pat Buckley written to Bishop Deenihan or has it only been done through this blog?
I would not reply through a public blog. There may be things we do not know about Dom Benedict. That is between him and the Bishop. Simply private.
Has Dom Benedict commented on the fact that he has been denied a letter of good standing? If not, why not? Where is he? Is he hiding?
I am very open minded on this as lots of people are going round in circles.
We need the whole truth and nothing but the whole truth. Let us have both sides of the story or drop it.

So, you would like Seamus to pretend everything is ok? Do you not know that one of the worst sufferings of an abuse victim is when everyone carries on as if nothing has happened?

Let me be very clear as I am sure I will be accused of being a company man but really I am a realist and know everything is not right but in life like all organisations things go wrong and I am sure Bishop Pat is not saying he is the Angel Gabriel either but we have to be servants of others.
God willing the one thing the RCC strives to do is be honent and sincere and strive for a better vineyard but we all must work for that irrespective of Our faith and those of none.
Bishop Tom is not one of my ideal Bishops however I do think it is only fair that he has a right of reply to you however it is impossible as all you do is mention him constantly and daily.
So I ask you to understand law and that is in Civic life and in Church life you cannot give references that are not accurate and that is a fact however if Bishop Pat wishes to do this then that is up to him but NO one will give references that break the law.
The simplest thing for any Bishop would be to sign off a letter or a reference but it is not going to happen and it is not about liability and money it is about Honesty and tranquility.
Finally Bishop Tom would be more than happy to have any correspondence from you or anyone else as to Dom Benedict as the only correspondence to the Diocese of Meath and you are doing more protest than Don Benedict.
You refer to Bishop Tom as a hypocrite well you need to look in that mirror as the hypocrite is you for not contacting Bishop Tom Deenihan.
(even send it anonymous and it will get scanned into the system and dealt with)
I will be surprised if this is printed as it will not suit Bishop Pat’s agenda RCC all Bad however for Justice and Honesty I hope he allows it.

What a crock of crap!! The one thing the RCC strives to do is cover up. Where is the next tranche of sexual abuse disclosures to emerge from..?
Has Coffey or Dunlea anything to say on the Andersen letter?
Deenihan can hide behind his office, title and pointy hat. The Andersen
issue is in the public domain meriting a public response from a supposed Episcopal leader. Seeking justice seems to bore you- surprise, surprise.

I submit that 12:25 is a Deenihan insider, and this bizarre comment actually represents the insane viewpoint of Tom himself. An absolutely fascinating look into the morally warped and tortured mind of Tom Deenihan.

I’m not sure what cloud you are floating on. How the hell did you come to the conclusion the Roman Catholic church and it’s hierarchy, “strive to be honest and sincere” Good God man!! Are you for real? Or is it the sup that has clouded your sight ? or are you totally blind?
Where have you being hibernation for the last 20 years?
The Roman Catholic hierarchy and, their church, are clearly one of the most untrustworthy, opaque, deceitful men and, organisation on this earth, with no conscience whatsoever”
“Strive for a better vineyard” only if its overflowing with rewards for themselves. You appear to be using words, which have no meaning at all. I would go so far as to say those of no faith have more moral compass than those who profess to have one.
I know nothing if Dom Anderson, but, I gather from your input, for Deenihan to to give him a letter stating, his good standing, would be against secular law and church law, one has to ask the question, because of what?

I see the Taliban are increasing their limitation on women. I don’t doubt the Vatican will condemn such blatant discrimination. But, what hypocrisy. They just need to look at their own attitude to women, especially theologically justified discrimination about priesthood. They are barely on anybetter ground than the Taliban, no matter how they justify it theologically. I suppose we are so used to it that we fail to see the ingrained discrimination and hypocrisy in the Church, and particularly amongst the clerical hierarchical culture. Take the plank out of your own eye first…..

The Wren, the Wren
The King of the Birds

But is it not a win win situation for Deenihan? If the monastery has to be liquidated where do the assets go?

Like

7:46, the key is that Tom will not want to be looking like he’s caving into the demands of Pat Buckley. That’s far more important than any financial windfall.

Like

7:46 When monasteries and religious orders are closed the assets firstly support the professed members until settled elsewhere.
Frequently a closing monastery merges as a legal entity with another, so once any debts and duties to donors are dealt with the monastery’s assets would belong to the other.
Not forgetting that they will both be charities, of course.
If that isn’t the case the monastery’s assets can be used in other ways. For example Fernham Priory in England closed some years ago but its assets support the remaining members and also under the terms of the charity make grants to other monastic and church communities.
So it’s not simple to say what would happen in a particular case.
What does not happen is what fools have said on here before that the assets are divided among the members. This is an advantage of church groups being charities, they can’t just do that.

Your canon law knowledge needs updating. Silverstream is a priory of diocesan institution. The diocesan bishop is the ordinary and the priest monk(s) is/are (an) incardinated member(s) of the diocesan clergy.

12:25 makes no sense whatsoever. On one hand, the issue with Dom Benedict’s letter is somehow to do with the law (not clear if it’s civil or canon), but then he says the issue is “not one of money or liability, but of honesty and tranquillity”. What does any of this mean?

Like

We were hoping someone would explain.
I suspect the tranquility in question is 12:25’s and he wishes to be made tranquil by having the subject dropped.

I’d also suggest that the likes of Deenihan will be very spooked by Bishop Pat’s exposure of the rotund Oratorian bishop and the fact that Pat has received a cordial and constructive reply from the Archbishop of Liverpool concerning the same. People especially in Ireland like to dismiss Pat’s blog as nonsense, but as this matter and others (such as the Purcell matter) show, Pat is more often than not right on the money and his blog can produce results catastrophic to RC officialdom.
