Dear Abbot Brendan,
In my blog for December 22, 2022 — I posed, in light of information that I had received, the following question, “Did [Bishop Thomas] Deenihan Lie to a French Abbot?”. I enclose the link to same for your kind consideration, which you can read at your leisure.
It is well-known that you have been actively involved in the sorry saga that is Silverstream Priory. When the whistle-blower, Dom Benedict Andersen, wrote his letter of complaint to the Bishop of Meath, Thomas Deenihan, it is a matter of public record that you were one of the visitators appointed [by Deenihan] to conduct a sham investigation.
Why do I refer to it as a “sham investigation”? Because you actively covered-up the sexual and financial misconduct of Fr. Mark Kirby, the then superior. And to add insult to injury, you, Abbot Brendan Coffey, OSB, were complicit in the REAPPOINTMENT of a known recidivist cleric, Fr. Mark Daniel Kirby, OSB, as the superior of Silverstream Priory. By that I mean that you Abbot Brendan wilfully ignored for reasons that remain arcane [for the moment] that Dom Mark Kirby had been credibly accused of sexual and financial misconduct. This is not supposition, because the allegations were investigated by An Garda Síochána and a file was prepared and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions. Do you now dispute that reality concerning Fr. Kirby? If so, are you that sequestered from reality?
During the so-called investigation were you aware of these allegations? If so, did you recommend to Bishop Deenihan that Fr. Kirby should be referred to An Garda Síochána?
During the visitation, did you recommend to Bishop Deenihan that he should seek independent legal advice about the allegations? If not; why not?
When the allegations concerning Fr. Kirby were referred to the Irish police, who brought the allegations to the police? Was it you Abbot Brendan or Bishop Deenihan or both of you acting independently?
In light of your qualification in canon law, were you aware that it was canonically inappropriate for Fr. Kirby to be reappointed as the Superior of Silverstream Priory? If so, did you express those concerns either verbally and/or in writing to Bishop Deenihan?
Who ultimately made the decision to reappoint Fr. Kirby as the superior? Was it you or Bishop Deenihan? Or perhaps also your fellow visitator, the disgraced former Abbot Richard Purcell, OSCO, had a hand in this decision?
During this process of decision-making, did you in light of the serious and credible allegations advise (regardless of the police investigation) that Fr. Kirby should not have been appointed?
Do you accept that at that time the appropriate course of action was the opening of a canonical investigation under the provisions of Canon 1717? Did you advise Bishop Deenihan in writing that Fr. Kirby should have been subjected to same?
Would you accept that these matters were ever ventilated in the High Court that using an objective yardstick the advice that you purportedly gave was negligent and wholly deficient? Do you accept this raises serious questions about your probity and character?
Did it suit you to have Fr. Kirby reappointed as superior because you recognised Silverstream was hopelessly corrupt and fatally flawed and you wanted a prompt exit strategy?
Do you deny all the above? If so, would you accept the valid observation that you are also now stand accused of lying like Bishop Deenihan?
Notwithstanding, the above the primary purpose of this e-mail is to enquire: did you have any involvement in connecting Bishop Deenihan with the Abbot of Abbey of Saint-Joseph de Clairval, Rt. Rev’d Dom Jean-Bernard Marie Bories, OSB?
Are you able to explain why Bishop Deenihan “suddenly” reached out to Dom Bories?
Did you, Abbot Brendan, as the former superior of Silverstream Priory, appointed by Bishop Deenihan, because of your status as a Benedictine Ordinary write a letter of introduction to Dom Bories on behalf Bishop Deenihan of Meath?
If you did write such a letter: did you explain to Abbot Bories that the founder of Silverstream Priory was credibly accused of criminal behaviour, i.e. sexual assault and financial misconduct?
Did you advise Bishop Deenihan to lie/be economical with the truth to Abbot Bories — if these difficult issues were raised during the course of any conversation?
Have you been contacted by Abbot Bories seeking guidance on the mess that is Silverstream Priory?
Do you consider that, after almost three years of chaos, Silverstream Priory should finally be suppressed by a Decree of the Holy See?
In light of the known fact that Glenstal Abbey has given sanctuary to a monk who accepted a caution for unacceptable behaviour in the UK – it is legitimate to ask: is it possible that Fr. Mark Kirby, after a sojourn in Holland, is now staying at Glenstal Abbey?
In light of the never-ending sexual scandals that have engulfed the Church in Ireland for the past three decades, what were you thinking about Silverstream at the time?
Would you be happy to have your involvement in Silverstream to be subjected independent scrutiny by officials from the Irish Department of Education? I ask, because you are the abbot of the monastery that runs one of Ireland’s most prestigious schools.
With all seasonal best wishes, I remain,
Sincerely yours in Christ
+Pat Buckley

I think Deenihan is trying to get Flavigny to take on Silverstream as a daughter house. I also think this is a good idea. I suspect the abbot has googled the priory, gone ‘Quoi?’ and very reasonably told them he wants to get the measure of the community before doing so.
Dom Kirby should be looked after kindly in a way that recognizes his own needs and stops them impacting anyone else. I’m sure Silverstream is his baby and he feels bereft of it.

12:18 Well! clergy & their types must protect their paying customers & guests in the interests of securing repeat business at all costs & specifically at great cost to those they choose to slander in order to protect their own assets. Shame they choose to endanger others including victims & their families that are of no use to them being outside of their inner circles of customers & benefactors. Presumably they sent you the specifics of their ‘risk assessment analysis’ that they obviously completed on you without your permission or prior consultation and prior to informing you that you were deemed “too high a risk” to attend a retreat offered as part of your healing package from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Killaloe. Legally, it is none of their business who you associate with – given all of their own conflicts of interests. Bishop Pat Buckley openly runs a very helpful support service for those being subjected to wrongful conduct by the Irish Roman Catholic Church as do others in various international jurisdictions. As you are aware, the powers that be within the Roman Catholic Church from the top down closed down his previous support blog for victims, survivors & families of church related wrongdoing. That tells you all that you need to know about their motivations and priorities. Keep Safe.

“While the cold snap of the past few days has taken the gloss from the image of the ‘White Christmas’, not least due to rising fuel costs, we still strive for that notion of peace.
In fact, most or our Christmas Carols allude to that message of peace that was part of the first Christmas.” – A Christmas message from the Bishop of Meath, Tom Deenihan.
How can Tom write about peace as he continues his persecution of Dom Benedict?
The Abbey of Saint-Joseph de Clairval will need to reflect on their support for Tom’s Silverstream charade. Silverstream is scandalous. Tom is fanning the flames of that scandal.
“In their report, the visitation team recognised that serious breaches of medical data protection and spiritual confidentiality (what they termed the “internal forum”) were occurring.
The Visitation Report warned the community that the civil legal structure of Silverstream Priory needed attention to make it compliant with civil law, the Revenue Commissioners, the Charity Governance Code and Data Protection legislation.
“We have concerns in these areas,” the report stated.
Tom is the ordinary of the diocese. Tom has to take full responsibility for his mismanagement of the Silverstream charade.
As Dom Benedict rightly observed: “He has a very embarrassing situation on his hands. He has made bad decisions, and the diocese has, and they’ve just compounded over and over.”

Under the CTA, British and Irish citizens can move freely and reside in either jurisdiction and enjoy associated rights and privileges, including the right to work, study and vote in certain elections, as well as to access social welfare benefits and health services.

Do you think the main reason Silverstream is not suppressed by + Tom is because he doesn’t want to be seen to be dancing to Pat Buckley’s tune?

It’s obvious that things are not good at the heart of OSB and OCSO monasteries in Ireland. It is the case also in the UK – Ampleforth, Downside, Ealing etc. Given that self-governance and oversight by the Church, dioceses and Rome is not working, I believe that the State should step in and, after huge amounts of evidence over the last decades, declare these places to be places of danger for safeguarding, and to restrict them severely as to who can visit them, stay at them, and to inspect them regularly. There is so much going on that is unhealthy that these places cannot possibly be seen as places of safety and security, especially for young people. And, yes, that may well mean the closing down of any schools that they run. Things are that serious, and the indications are so ominous of a culture and behaviours that should not be tolerated anymore. They have brought this on themselves by their arrogance, their unaccountability, and their coverups

By continuing to blog about the malfeasance of Deenihan and those that he appointed you are hardening his resolve to keep the place going but ultimately it will close because nobody wishes to be associated in the long what a community that is this toxic. And as you showed us on the blog a Trust controlled by the Diocese of Meath owns the property so it can be sold to developers and Silverstream with the passing of time will become another failed religious community.

If true this is just another proof that the hierarchy are self-interested and couldn’t run a bath.
They also wouldn’t be able to hold down a job requiring them to make sensible decisions and so it’s lucky the rest of us are preserved from their incompetence.
If Deenihan thinks Silverstream should be suppressed that’s what he should do, obviously.
Although I do wonder whether the potential for donations from wealthy American Latin types is part of the motivation as well as stubbornness.
Clearly the scandal to the faithful and the wellbeing of the young men there are not considerations.
Although I have to say in truth if you can’t keep off internet porn you have to be honest with yourself and admit you don’t have a monastic vocation. I myself was a Benedictine novice for a time in my misspent youth and part of my decision that it wasn’t for me was I was continually horny and pulling my pud. The climax (lol) came one day when I was convinced the table leg in the refectory was flirting with me and I knew I had to get out of there and have some sex.
That said my impression was that most of the other monks were in a similar place and masturbated to deal with it.

Not heeding +Pat appears to be a point of honour (the sort among thieves) among most in authority in the Cath. Church. Situations that create problems, like whoopsie stuff or worse, are instead resolved by shuffle and silence. If Silverstream to be passed off to a stable French community as a dependant community, Dom Andersen should at least be restored to the honour of his priesthood and vocation as a Benedictine, even if he broke that most sacred rule of Omertà, yet people +Pat advocates for are probably beyond the pale, so how that’ll happen is unclear. Presumably the celebret has to be issued by +Deenihan.

NOTORIOUS | Paedo priest who abused vulnerable boys for 20 years avoids jail after breaching court order
Paul Higgins
Sunday World
“A paedophile priest who abused young vulnerable boys for almost 20 years was handed a suspended sentence on Thursday after he breached a court order. Imposing a three month jail sentence on disgraced priest Daniel Gerard Curran but suspending it for three years, District Judge Steven Keown said the pre-sentence probation report illustrated a “depressing lack of insight and minimisation of his behaviour.”
“He warned the 72-year-old if he breached his Sexual Offences Prevention Order again in that time “you will be facing custody.”

There was an American actor called Dick Purcell (1905 to 1944). His work included roles in the films:

Kirby then resigns months later “for health reasons” (muffled snicker). This is absolutely insane, reckless, inexplicable behaviour by the Bishop of Meath. Can anyone explain this???

Bishop Pat’s blog fulfils a crucial role in holding the RCC to account and provides essential scrutiny. The RCC has high expectations of its clergy, and those who profess to be celibate should expect to be called out if they don’t keep their promises. No press organisation is interested in a philandering priest or one caught cottaging, or even an Abbott buggering a priest on the monastic kitchen table, or priests and seminarians having sex on altars. Without this blog, the individuals would still be deceiving us all. Who was the priest that had sex on the altar?
