A HEXHAM AND NEWCASTLE PRIEST SPEAKS.

ROBERT BYRNE

Dear Brother Priest,

A letter arrives ten days after it is written.

I imagine the VG wrote it and then handed it up the line to be scrutinised and edited

The fact that Byrne reluctantly submitted his resignation means that he did not go. He was given no alternative and was pushed.

He was allowed to save face by “resigning.”

That begs other questions. Why was he pushed?

– the alleged sexual assault of a priest?

– maladministration of H&N?

– other matters that have yet come to light?

The strength of the alleged priest victim’s evidence will have a strong bearing on the police outcome.

The priest’s bishop has been very good to him and is supporting him.

The Church investigation will be held in secret, and the main aim will be a major effort to avoid scandal and to protect the reputation 😀 of the Church.

Byrne’s treatment of the native clergy was despicable but sadly not uncommon.

Making any member of the Congregation of the Oratory is dicey. They are a strange and eccentric bunch, and so many of them seem to carry pink handbags.

The fact that Byrne wanted to allow a convicted paedophile to live with him in the Bishop’s house was crazy and when his safeguarding office opposed his plan, he had it in for them afterwards.

His relationship with the deceased Canon McCoy was also crazy. Byrne showed an atrocious lack of judgement.

A bishop buying a million pound house in these days of unheard economic disaster is a disgrace and a scandal.

Byrne’s appointment is a massive condemnation of the RC’s way of appointing bishops.

Pat, you demean yourself by posting supposed funny pics of The Two Popes. It’s unfortunate you chose to print this photo. Surprised at you doing so on the eve of Pope Benedict’s funeral. The story about Bishop Byrne reflects a guy who was absorbed in himself, his power and role. He abused his role as a Bishop in so many inappropriate ways. He is not deserving of any such title.

That’s not a funny picture, that’s objective reporting of his last words. May God smite you for your cynicism.

Innocent until proven guilty is a legal maxim not a human one – humans like to speculate, gossip and wonder and occasionally be amused that a tubby self important bishop has been reported to the police – yes, innocent until proven guilty but often ‘no smoke without fire.’

I know it’s innocent until proven guilty, but I’m afraid + Bobby is toast. There will be no coming back from this kind of thing. There must be something there for +McMahon to take it seriously, and for the Nuncio to have been involved in moving + Bobby on. I think the best outcome he will get is prayer and penance, he may even find himself laicised from episcopacy and priesthood. Whatever, I would expect the Cong Orats will have some responsibility and oversight for him. Rightly so. But,. as for the rest, well it does look a bit bleak. I’m genuinely sorry about that. Both for + Bobby and anybody else (an assumed victim ?) included. It’s just very sad all round.

10:45 My hard drive (well, SSD but that’s academic) is full of porn and loads of documents about my life.
All of which are completely legal and if the police ever seized it they’d return it with no charge.
I’m also not pretending to be celibate and do masturbate to the porn on the SSD.
Welcome to the real world where integrity doesn’t mean pretending, shame, insinuations and threats like it does for cathbots and priests.

Celibacy is totally unnatural and is not scriptural. Until this is scrapped we will have criminal sexual acts like this from our clergy. It is another rule made up by the RCC. However, those who enter priesthood know the rules of their organisation before entering clerical life. A man or woman is designed to have company if they so choose. Forcing them to be on their own can no doubt lead them to seek a form of escape. However, what about them being ontologically changed and imbued with the Holy Spirit? in truth the only change that takes place is that they now think they are superior and can do whatever they want with money and people. The whole system is weird and unnatural.

Like

Celibacy is scriptural, Jesus was celibate, he talked about eunachs for the Kingdom, praised those who gave up spouses to follow him, and St Paul said it was better not to marry.

Anyway, sola scriptura isn’t in the Bible.

Like

9.47

Celibacy may be scriptural, but it is not a biblical imperative, either morally, or normatively

We don’t know that Jesus said any such thing about eunuchs: it’s just as likely that those words were attributed to him by a gospel author or editor. Other gospel words arguably were. Remember celibacy had become the watchword, so to speak, of certain early Christians post-Ascension: Paul himself, for example, urged celibacy among Jesus’ followers, not principally because he believed it facilitated evangelisation, but because it had become generally accepted that Jesus’ second coming was imminent, and, by some like Paul, that marriage and family were, therefore, a pointless inconvenience at best, and a distraction and hindrance at worst.

Did Jesus praise people who, apparently, had given up spouses (and, likely, children, too) to follow him? Would Jesus have encouraged people (more likely than not, men) to abandon marital responsibilities to their wives and children, for his glory? Would Jesus have been such a shit? Perhaps the question should be: What kind of God do you Romanists worship?

From what we know (or, in the case of Romanism, should have known) of Jesus’ character, he would not have encouraged any such thing! Those words apparently spoken by him are clearly attributive. If historical Romanism had paid more attention to Scripture than so-called ‘Tradition’, it could have worked this out all on its own.

As for ‘sola scriptura’, the words don’t actually appear in the Bible, true; but nor does the Bible condemn either the concept or practice. So, your point loses traction; in point of fact, you don’t have a point at all.

However, one could reasonably argue that ‘sola scriptura’ is implicit if one truly believes the Bible to be the word of God. Isn’t God’s word alone, sola scriptura, enough for you presumptiously arrogant Romanists? (Ever wondered why your morally chequered history… and then some… is strewn with such atrocious events as schism, the Crusades, and the Papal Inquisition, not to mention systemic child rape and its cover up?)

Which begs the question. Was Jesus gay? The truth of the matter is we will never know. “Gave up their spouse’s to follow him” you mean cut, and, ran, that seems like an easy way out of responsibilities, and, still happening today. Did Paul suggest not to marry, if a person is batting for the other side, that would make sense.

Queenievenus, we can know with historical certainty that Jesus was not gay because the ideas of sexual orientation and identity which underpin the idea of being gay did not then exist.

Is your tongue in your cheek, 5.45?

There is a mythology among diocesan priests that celibacy and solitude are the problem, and they look longingly at religious life. Anyone who knows religious life knows that it is full of dysfunction, bullying, competition, and people not talking to each other.
I think the problem is that the people allegedly called to priesthood are so dysfunctional they are incapable of relating to other people.

It ain’t God for two reasons : one, he didn’t reinvent priesthood, since Jesus’ death and resurrection had obviated it; and, two, he didn’t call paedophiles to the priesthood, whose conduct, and its cover-up by a paedo-friendly priestood, is tearing apart the Assembly.

I’d go a bit further, Seamus, re ‘focused on their sins’. Mine actually focused on his sins but projected his sinning onto his parishioners. He tries a different tac now some of us have seen the light. The ‘different tac’ isn’t working on our psyches now either. Christians are now a thorn in the side of the RCC. We’re being ‘offered’ Catholic Christians, as a possible ‘cover up’ from being RCs. As a priest’s ‘housekeeper’ once said “Its far more important to be a Christian than a Catholic.” What a complete and utter mess my Church is in.
As for the ‘disingenuous’ commenter, I’d say disingenuous my ****! That person was likely green with envy at Dermott’s gift of supporting the Youth – but interesting it was built miles away from the ‘main throughfare’.
A Guardian wrier once parodied a previous headline ‘We’ve fiddled the figures’ to ‘We’ve figured the fiddles.’ Some parishioners – but not yet enough to make a positive difference, sadly, have, at last, arrived at the Church’s fiddles and crimies’. This blog seeks to promote truth and understanding. I think its good for we ‘ordinary parishiiners or ‘laiety’.
The Church does not want Truth. How dare you, the lot of you, with your little power kegs, blast Christ’s people with your lies, subterfuge & evil ways. I think of my brothers and sisters trusting, easy people, giving their pennies & £s to prop up this deceitful market place – we know what Christ thought of those! And in Luke’s Gospel ‘it would be better to tie a stone round your neck and drown, than to harm one of these little ones.’
I no longer give financial offerings to RC. Some of us give of our time and HS gifts – it is deeply painful to discover the truth but we have every right to know. We are & have been, through generations, financing and funding evil. One hopes Christ can forgive our naivety and help His people to come to terms with our stupidity, our pain and the oppressive fascist regime of much of your ‘Canon’ Law.
Amen – and thank you Seamus Viii.

It does seem a bit strange that nothing has been said publicly about Byrne being reported to the police and his case forwarded to the Vatican. The line still seems be that he has just retired. However, + McMahon said in his response to + Pat that the police and Vatican were now part of the picture. Is this one standard for bishops and another for ordinary clergy ? Because, if it were you and me, mere clerics at the coalface, we would in similar circumstances have been suspended, something would have been said by the bishop to our parishioners, and we would have to leave the clergy house, and disappear. At least until the whole thing was clarified. But, that doesn’t seem to be the case for Byrne. I think that + McMahon should post something on the H & N website saying exactly what has happened and what Byrne’s status is at present. As to the press, well, it will not take them long to sniff out this story, and the good people of H & N will learn of it in their newspapers. I think they might well be pissed off not to have been told by + McMahon.

Just as would happen with you and me. What is good for goose is also good for the gander.
