Dear Bishop Pat,
Thank you for beginning to shed some light on the unsavoury goings on in Portsmouth diocese.
I was a diocesan employee for many years.
Around 3 years ago, it was decided that the diocese needed a “chief operating officer,” and one was appointed.
The COO is paid £100,000 anualy and is given free reign. There is no supervision of her at all, and she fires all the shots. I found her to be bullying, and with her, everything’s a drama.
Her son will soon be ordained a priest for the diocese. He has appeared on your blog before.

The COO is Heather Hauschild, and I resigned over her.
I was also unhappy with wat I saw as the incompetence of the moderator of the Curia Canon Michael Dennehy – who incidentally was JOHN PAUL LYTTLE’S PP in Reading when the policeman alleged assault took place.

I also believed I was seeing too much corruption and mishandling.
Bishop Egan is a dictator. He holds grudges and treats people very badly. If you cross him, he will come after you.
I remember him dismissing Angela McGrory, the then head of safeguarding, because she challenged him on his handling of an alleged abuse case involving Cardinal Murphy O’ Connor – investigated during te IICSA enquiry.

Since the arrival of the COO there has been a huge turnover of diocesan employees.
The relationship between the COO and the clergy couldn’t be worse. She treats the priests of the diocese disrespectfully and undermines them.
I had to get out!
There is so much to be uncovered in Portsmouth, and I sincerely hope you keep digging and that priests will be courageous enough to speak out.
CANON P J SMITH

Until September 2022, was Cathedral Dean. He is now out of parish ministery completely and is living in a parish presbytery and being funded by the diocese. What happened?
There is talk of financial issues and something about a local undertaker?
Smith is a close friend of Fr Michael Daly, the PP of Parsons Green in Westminster.

THE NEW BISHOP’S SECRETARY
FATHER ANTHONY FYK appeared to come out of nowhere. No one knows him, and he has no connections with Portsmouth.

Fr Fyk was a seminarian for a Canadian diocese ans half way through his training when he changed diocese and tomove halfway across the world to be ordained by Egan and lo live with his former seminar vice rector.
FATHER RAY LYONS AND FR SEAN TOBIN

These two priests have been business partners for many years and now live together.
They have also bought a holiday home in Spain together.
Fr Lyons is very wealthy and made his money in property before coming to the priesthood.
He was abused as a child by a priest.
Fr Tobin was a painter and decorator before becoming a priest.
Bishop Hollis suspended Fr Lyons from ministry, and Bishop Egan reinstated him. He went on to be a school chaplain in Westminster and was suspended a second time?
After being removed from ministry the second time, Fr Lyons moved in with Fr Tobin, who was PP in Fleet. Bishop Egan said Fr Lyons had to leave the presbytery.
This, I caused Fr Tobin to have a breakdown, and he has not been seen since.
Frs Tobin and Lyons ate reputed to be looking to buy a building in Fleet to open their own church there.
Bishop Egan is trying to laicise them.
EGANS 10 YEAR PLAN
Egan intends to reduce the dioceses parishes from 127 to 23.
There will be 23 parish priests and 23 parish bank accounts. All other priests will be assistan priests.
The parish finances will then be all governed by the COO !
The plan is to sell off dozens of parish churches diocesan debt. It costs £ 6 million a year to run the diocesan offices.
The diocese owns £ 400 million in property.
Bishop Egan as a personal secretary and personal assistant paid for by te diocese.
A communications officer paid £ 75,000, and the COO paid £ 100,000.
Bishop Egan inherited millions of pounds from Bishop Hollis from funds ring fenced for the LIVING OUR CHURCH projects. He has spent it all.
Egan has raided many diocesan accounts. On paper they look to have money in them but it’s all gone !
The parish levies have been set far too high, which is a burden on parishes.
Now Egan has set sight on the PRIEST’S RETIREMENT FUND.
The diocese is in freefall. It is a complete mess. The priests are reluctant to cooperate, and it will get worse.
Bishop Pat, if you keep the spotlight on Portsmouth, others will talk.

It is ridiculous and appalling that this woman is paid a salary of £100,000. Lets face it that job could be done by clerics for nothing, in their spare time of which they have plenty. It’s not as they are busy with sick calls, parish visitation etc. Perhaps if they were kept busy they wouldn’t have time to engage in all the other activities we hear about.

The story in is very concerning because of the layers of nuance, emphasis, deceit, sneaky decision making and lack of proper accountability. There’s a recklessness about the Bishop that can only bring more and further scandals and problems. Sometimes when high profile lay people are brought in 8n h6ge salaries they automatically assume serious roles and some have begun bullying staff and clergy in parishes. Men and women now in positions once held by clerics are asserting their power and are demanding hugely hugh salaries. In the newly constructed dynamics and moves, something will give and the whole edifice will crumble. All these initiatives and projects lack a faith, prayer and spiritual foundation. Sadly. And those in power are pretending to listen.

Thanks for more fascinating information on my diocese which I’m not going to get from the parish newsletter. Some clarification is needed on that massive diocesan fundraiser “Living our Faith” which was launched in 2009 under Bishop Crispin Hollis, long before Philip Egan arrived.
Living our Faith was controversial from the start. Its problems included:
1. Doubts about the honesty of its stated goals. There was a hugely significant legal case (Father Wilfred Baldwin – check it out) running at the time. One powerful suspicion was that the money from LOF was needed either to directly fund the potentially massive costs of the Wilfred Baldwin litigation or to plug the gaps in other funds sucked into that case. The diocese naturally flatly denied this.
2. LOF involved an American fundraising company which took a seven figure fee from the diocese before any money was raised.
3. At least one objective of the LOF appeal (funding clergy formation) was already amply covered by an existing fund.
4. The diocese at the time was running a £1 million a year surplus and apparently could have accumulated a capital reserve by other means – including the massive fees paid to the US company.
No wonder that one acid tongued senior priest referred to LOF as Fleecing The Flock. Or that some parishes, priests and laity flatly refused to cooperate.
Later reports on the use of LOF funds looked even more baffling. Instead of being used for big capital projects which individual parishes might struggle to fund, it was dispersed in many small grants, most of which could gave been fund raised by any enthusiastic parish.
As for Canon P J Smith, lately assigned to the Cathedral before quietly disappearing to Horndean……I sang at his ordination in 2007 and could only wonder how long it would be before his career hit the iceberg. Any more information?

There were obvious benefits to the American fundraising consultants. They got a whopping seven figure fee before the diocese got a penny. They naturally quoted alleged examples of the huge sums they had helped American dioceses raise. The hard slog was done by clergy and laity, not the consultants.

In the case of Northampton diocese, there was lots of emotional blackmail to make pledges. Parishoners were asked to sign up other parishoners, which was potentially coercive.
Parishes had to send the money to a central pot, from which they would get a little back, and in the transaction various fees and expenses were extracted. It made no sense. Parishes should have kept the money they raised.

Surely anybody could have seen this coming ? The alarm bells have been screaming around this young man JP for many years, and still nobody seems to have got the message that he has problems and is going to be trouble. No least his bishop of Portsmouth, who seems to have pushed through his ordination at all costs. The young man needs help, and let us hope he gets it, but his future in ministry is nil, and he will need to move on to other things. It is right that JP takes personal responsibility for his behaviour, but equally there should be some very serious questions asked of those who had oversight, direction, and formation of him over many years. Why was this man allowed to be ordained ? It is indicative of what we already know, that by and large the system of formation for priests is not fit for purpose and is dysfunctional. No other organisation would allow this to happen and would have a root and branch review of what it is doing, how it is doing it, and what it is producing. It’s shocking. I’m astounded. + Portsmouth and others have big questions to answer.

If it is problematic for you, and it leads you in to cruising, saunas, alfresco sex, dishonest relationships, taking advantage of people, then you need to do the honest and straightforward thing and find another way of life that suits your predilections. Just living a lie is not healthy or good for you, for those around you, or for the Church. So, please, have a think and be honest with yourself and take the right steps. A thing that has been wrong for a long time was to tell a man that he is a “priest” (of a specific priesthood) “forever” because that is never going to be within the meaning of Holy Scripture. When any alter JP isn’t in such priesthood, he needn’t be listed as one: simple. “Reduced” might mean “led back”, but it doesn’t have to mean smaller. If he has done his best in the role for a short time, fine. If someone else does their best in the role a longer time, fine. The RCC needs to discover the principle of principle.

There is something odd about the whole clerical psychological assessment. They say, surgeons think they are God, it’s priests that think they are.

All well said. In walks of life though people can find it difficult to talk to their parents, family, teachers, superiors and even their partners. My favourite thing on this blog is when the cathbots try to divert to other abusers and claim that bishop Buckley is being unfair by focusing on theit relentless abuse, corruption and crime.
They are obviously inspired by the gospel story where Jesus told Zaccheus what he’d been up to. Zaccheus replied, ‘But I’m not paying back fourfold until you’ve done everyone else who’s done what I’ve done because it ISN’T FAIR!’ And Jesus replied ‘Of course, Zacchaeus, that’s not a problem and would you like to be one of my apostles for the usual bribe?’

There is civil law and the Christian way e.g. abortion. Abortion is not the Christian way. Coveting of others is not the Christian way. True committed love is beautiful. Everything else is a form of coveting no matter what way people want to dress it up.

I remember when priests feared exposure by the News of the World. They were pussycats compared to this lot who appear to have deep pockets and time to reveal the filth at the heart of the RC Church. I guess in the hope of reform… Nat Meysenburg, a technologist at New America’s Open Technology Institute, said that experts had warned about something like this happening for years, and that it only took a particularly determined group of people with a very specific goal in mind and the time to work through the data. “The worry is that this gets replicated by all kinds of people for all kinds of reasons,” he said. “And now there’s a proof of concept out there.”

Nobody seems to have asked why you need to have priests as General Secretaries of episcopal conferences. Clogher diocese seems to have priests to spare because it can afford to have Joe McGuinness doing the Gen Sec job for the Irish bishops. Why can’t a lay person do it, instead of having a desk priest?

This blog is about Bishop Egan. Too many comments have been made about other matters. Egan needs to be watched carefully. At his ordination he said that he hoped to be an ‘orthodox bishop’. Another Bishop (after the burial of a good freind of mine) told me that there was concern about this amongst his colleagues because Egan was as good as saying they were not orthodox. They didn’t like that, and rightly so. Remember, Egan was VG to Bishop Mark Davies, another ‘orthodox cleric’. Murphy O’Connor said that Davies’s name would have been jetisoned if he had been at the meeting considering him as a bishop. Watch Egan. He is a rigid thinker. I think the following sums him up. I am an Anglican. It happened that I dropped in on a mass (in London) Egan celebrated. There was a prayer for the conversion of Engand. I found it arrogant and very wrong. He doesn’t recognise Christian of other demoninations. If that is orthodox, it is very wrong. I think many priests in Portsmouth diocese must be dismayed and very unhappy.

It’s very ineresting and telling to hear you say that the old lefty Murphy O’Conner of the St Gallen Mafia would have jetisoned Davies name if he had been there as he was considered orthodox! That tells you everything about that oul melt who never wanted anything orthodox. Thank God he’s gone, there was nothing wrong with Bishop Egan praying for the conversion of England it surely needs it. It is very refreshing to hear that there is at least one orthodox Bishop left.

The undercurrent with Egan and Davies is a frustrated or repressed homosexuality both their own and others.

McQuaid was certainly an intellectual. However his interference in Irish politics lead to appropriate unease amongst northern unionists. The term Rome rule for the Irish republic is in a large part due to his interference. His interference instilled fear from both northern and southern Irish people alike. De Valera, the wannabe priest, was the perfect companion for him. Their handiwork in the framing of the Irish constitution led to untold misery and abuse amongst citizens. Because of them both, abusers were protected and the vulnerable were punished. The Roman Catholic Church has been exposed for what it is: nothing more than a Mafia organisation. The concept of justice does not feature in their thinking . It’s all about protecting the brand and the money making machine. Christ is only a cover story for them. I had high hopes for Pope Francis but he has let down the faithful, let down Christ and protected abusers. How he can be called a descendant of St Peter is beyond me. He is merely the head of a corrupt mafia masquerading as a servant of Christ. As others have said, his organisation is a cesspit

The Interference you talk about by Dr McQuaid is a nonsense he acted as an Archbishop of those day’s would. After years of the protestant ascendancy, no wonder he was feared when they saw that they were on the way out. They had ruled over the majority Catholic population and kept them down for generations, so naturally they were fearful of losing their position. Archbishop John Charles McQuaid was the greatest Prelate of the XXth century in Ireland. Just look at the present Hierarchy compared to him, says it all. He would be appalled to see the Ireland of today, thanks be to God he was spared it. How you had high hopes for the dictator Bergo I don’t know, from his first appearance on the Loggia I knew he would be the disaster he has turned out to be.
