GEORGE PELL – SAINT OR DEVIL ?

Cardinal George Pell RIP

SAINT

“The Catholic Church in Australia has known few more extraordinary figures than George Pell.

A product and priest of the rural diocese of Ballarat, he rose to be not only Archbishop of Melbourne but, extraordinarily, Archbishop of Sydney as well.

It was unthinkable then that the Archbishop of Melbourne would be moved to Sydney.

As was said at the time, β€œIt was an insult to both”.

It took George Pell to break the mould.

With the move to Sydney he was named Cardinal, which brought with it a further enhancement of his Vatican profile.

This eventually led to his appointment as Prefect of the Secretariat of the Economy of the Holy See, charged with leading the financial reforms begun by Pope Benedict and pursued by Pope Francis.

Then his legal troubles erupted in Australia in circumstances that remain unclear.

Pell became the victim of an outrageous injustice as he was convicted and jailed for 13 months before a final vindication.

The spiritual poise and strength he showed through all of this was extraordinary. It revealed a depth to George Pell that often went unrecognised.

Through his legal troubles, he was identified wholly with the Catholic Church and vice versa.

Pell was the Church, and the Church was Pell – big, powerful and heartless in the eyes of many. Partly this was because, in his public persona in Australia, Pell had presented himself self-consciously as the voice of the Catholic Church.

Those who didn’t know him thought Pell heartless and humourless, and his media persona could suggest this.

Yet if George Pell had anything, they were a good heart and a sense of humour. It was a pity that more of this didn’t show in his media appearances.

He didn’t claim to be a saint; he knew he was flawed. But he did claim – and rightly – to be a man of faith and a man of the Church. He once told me how struck he was by the words on the Roman tomb of Cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani, Vehementer amavit Ecclesiam (Vehemently he loved the Church).

George said however that he’d prefer on his own tomb, Vehementer amavit Dominum et Ecclesiam (Vehemently he loved the Lord and the Church).

There was nothing bland or half-hearted about George Pell: he was strong, even vehement in his faith, his convictions, his likes and dislikes.

He could be a fierce opponent, unafraid to enter the battle.

At times this could make him seem an ideological warrior, which did not serve him well. It certainly wasn’t George Pell at his best.

He was always a polarising figure, stirring strongly contrasting reactions. He had both passionate friends and passionate foes.

In part, this was because his deepest instincts were those of a politician who thrived on opposition and conflict. It was also tied to an apocalyptic view of the world seen as an arena where good and evil, life and death, light and darkness contended.

There wasn’t much middle ground for George Pell, not too many shades of grey.

But that he had unusual gifts of leadership is certain – intelligence, courage, conviction, self-confidence, political nous and tenacity among them.

Though he chose a life in the Church, George Pell would have been a leader in any field he had chosen.

It will take time to assess his legacy in the Church in Australia, which will prove as complex, even as contradictory as the man himself.

For now we give thanks for the gifts George Pell brought to us and the challenges he posed.

And we pray that, beyond all the struggles and sorrows he knew, this extraordinary man of faith and of the Church, our brother George, will come now before the Lord of mercy who will say to him simply (as Julian of Norwich predicts for each of us), β€œThanks for all you’ve done”.

Eternal rest give to George, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

  • Mark Coleridge is the Archbishop of Brisbane.
  • OPINION BRIAN FRAGA
  • The best, most balanced analysis of the case was penned by my colleague Brian Fraga (writing then for Patheos), who considered both what we knew, and what we did not know, about the case. The judicial system in Australia functions so differently from our own that both the easy defenses of Pell and the easy denunciations rang hollow.
  • “In the end, I think we can all take solace that the cardinal received the due process that he had a right to in the Australian legal system, and that the alleged victim was heard and had his complaints taken seriously,” Fraga concluded. “I think that’s all we can definitively say. Because when it comes down to it, that’s all we really know.”

Cardinal George Pell’s death isn’t the end or a celebration for child sex abuse survivors. It’s another hard day.

Today, it is like a radio station in my head, and it keeps on flicking over to different stations and some of them are louder than other stations. I wish I could take the batteries out so there was silence.

“I am definitely triggered.”

Catholic child sexual abuse survivor Julie Stewart wrote these words to me on Wednesday morning just after hearing the news about the sudden death of Catholic Cardinal George Pell

The survivors and victims and complainants of child sexual abuse in the Australian Catholic Church will not dance on the Cardinal’s grave.

For them, as Stewart says, the Cardinal’s death is a very triggering thing. A sombre occasion. A day when the vulnerable child inside them is bursting out again. A hard day.

The toll left behind

Despite the intense loyalty that Pell still inspires in some people, former prime ministers included, there are many, many survivors, like Julie, of Catholic paedophile clergy who feel that George Pell and the Church he stood at the apex of made them feel like they didn’t matter at all.

So, for them, not to mention the men who made direct complaints of historical child sex crimes against the Cardinal himself β€” only to see him ultimately acquitted by the High Court of Australia β€” the merest whisper of his name has always invoked a shudder.

Julie is a survivor of Peter Searson, a frankly, repugnant paedophile priest at the Melbourne parish of Doveton, and one of several abusive clergy whom the royal commission found Pell ought to have known about.

Now, I know I absolutely do matter and I make myself matter every single day. I always mattered and I mattered back then too,” Julie wrote.

“Today, I carry a photo of that little girl that loved to dance, and I live today for her.

“I feel joy and happiness for her today and every day after that.

“I will take today as a reflection day on what today represents for me,” she wrote about Pell.

“Not about the death of an individual that is making great headlines.

“Today is about the survival outside of all that noise and the celebration of all the little boys and girls that deserved a better outcome.

“You matter, you always did and you always will.

“My name is Julie Stewart.”

PAT SAYS

George Pell was an uncompromising defended of the wildly corrupt RCC.

For that alone, he was never my cup of tea.

He had an arrogant and bullying personality – which suited his role as an RCC hierarch.

It was his way or the highway.

DID HE SEXUALLY ABUSE

I believe that the charges he was found guilty of were UNSAFE.

That is why the high court overturned his conviction.

The overturn did not declare his INNOCENCE.

It declared his conviction UNSAFE.

As I believe it was unsafe.

HOWEVER

The cases of the boys who accused him of abusing them when he was a priest was never resolved.

I watched the long interviews of those boys as grown men.

I believed their story.

At least one of them is dead.

DID PELL COVER UP ABUSE BY PRIESTS?

Absolutely.

He is now dealing with the fullness of TRUTH and JUSTICE.

Saw him speaking once at JPII soc in Maynooth. He was very arrogant and haughty. The main news reel from that night however was Cardinal Des Connells ‘wanted/unwanted child’ comments re abortion..Pell come up with the ignorant ‘Adam & Eve not Adam & Steve’ comment. The sign of a leader is to bring people with them. The RCC has lost Australia. Decades of Christian Brothers, Marists, De la Salles, Sisters of Mercy etc abusing the young people and aboriginals have raken their toll. It became a dumping ground for errant Irish Clergy.. abusing in Ireland.. banished to Oz.. abused there again.. back again.. think of Limerick diocese accepting a priest banished from Oz for ‘moral failure ‘.. most cradle catholics now don’t go near church.. mostly emigrants now. A sad story all round and lorded over by an arrogant bully like Pell. + Fisher not much better.. don’t think he personally was an abuser but didn’t give a damn about victims. Studied his case and what was presented to court should never have come to trial..

10:26 The Roman Catholic Church operates as a secret society. It has colossal wealth that it utilises to bribe and purchase silence and to engineer proactive boycott campaigns against those reporting church related abuse and criminality. The game is up, the public can see it, the only people now attending mass are close personal friends of clergy with associated benefits plus a few evil sickos that find church contacts welcoming of their evil agendas.

Thank you – I was hoping for a comment bringing up the context of prolific abuse in Australia with the usual pattern of peaks and troughs. At some times and places you had a 1 in 5 chance that your priest was an abuser, which shows up the flattened percentage RCs love to quote for the cover up it is. It’s also important that these prolific abusers were in a ‘colony’, indicating the church’s use of the ‘missions’ – that one’s barely started yet .

10:36 absolutely spot on. The missions & various convents & charities & orders have provided the Roman Catholic Church with perfect dumping grounds for paedophile priests for decades placing even more potential victims at risk. The truth about Africa and Asia hasn’t even begun to surface yet. The Irish Church were quick enough to export Bishop Casey and set him up with local native women to keep him sated. Annie Murphy and her son fathered by Bishop Casey were never compensated by the Roman Catholic Church for the ongoing lies, abuse and vilification they endured for her speaking the truth and exposing Bishop Casey. Priests with criminal records are not visible on the altars in church but they are working in administrative roles in the business offices of diocese worldwide including Ireland.

The church in Ireland is responsible for SO MUCH abuse internationally by exporting its problems, it’s horrendous.
This also happened in the UK – there was a well worn path between the Benedictines in Australia and Fort Augustus abbey for example. In the US this might actually have broken federal law – unfortunately it’s unlikely ever to be prosecuted.
And now I expect most records have been shredded.

10:36am Australia and other countries far flung from Ireland & the UK were deliberately chosen as destinations to continue the careers of questionable clerics who had already blotted their copy books at home when the obvious & honest solution would have been to excommunicate them permanently and to place them on an international register to prevent them access for abusing any more school children, altar boys and girls, orphans in church run institutions etc. High time the Vatican stopped spouting meaningless platitudes and compensated all of the victims they knowingly endangered by moving clerical predators to new pastures to continue their abusive addictions.

I believe, without the slightest degree of doubt, that George Pell was a predatory homosexual paedophile/ephebophile who, recidivistically, sexually molested/raped defenceless little boys. Quite frankly, he was, to use a Press clichΓ©, a ‘monster’, all the more deceptively groteque for being a Romanist priest.
That a Romanist pope, Francis, described this vile … as a ‘faithful servant’ of Christ is telling, disgusting, and depressing. It demonstrates how far removed from the moral imperatives of Christ the Roman Catholic institutional church actually is.

Vatican City raised the age of consent to 18 in 2015.
It would appear previously, Vatican City’s criminal code (β€œZanardelli Code”, issued in 1889). Art 331 (1) says the age of consent is 12 years old, but according to Art. 331 (2) when there is a relationship of dependence (like teacher/student/etc.) the age of consent is 15 years. That only applies in the Vatican city, outside, one has to adhere to the civil law of the country

Pell’s own lawyer admitted there was a sexual assault on the two boys, and tried to minimise it with the following statement, he was as guilty as hell;
Lawyer for the defence Robert Richter tried to argue there were β€œno aggravating circumstances” to one of the offences.
It was β€œno more than a plain vanilla sexual penetration case where the child is not actively participating,” he told the court.
The chief judge, Peter Kidd, responded: β€œIt must be clear to you by now I’m struggling with that submission. Looking at your points here – so what?”
He said he saw Pell’s behaviour as β€œcallous, brazen offending” and β€œshocking conduct”.
β€œHe did have in his mind some sense of impunity.
How else did he think he would get away with this?
There was an element of force here … this is not anywhere near the lower end of offending.”
Brutal and dogmatic, George Pell waged war on sex – even as he abused children. David Marr
Pell lawyer Richter also tried to suggest that an incident in which Pell grabbed one of the boys by the genitals in an attack that lasted seconds was β€œfleeting” and not worthy of a jail sentence.
Judge Kidd disagreed.

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2020/apr/09/abc-to-re-edit-and-restore-george-pell-episode-of-revelation-as-news-corp-goes-on-attack

The swimmers trial was to start in April and feature allegations Pell separately touched two boys while playing in the pool with children between 1977 and 1979. One boy was aged 11 or 12, and the other nine or 10.

The older swimmer told police years later he felt one of Pell’s fingers touch his testicle when he was lifted and thrown out of the water. The other reported that on several occasions Pell deliberately groped him on the genitals and backside while under the water.

Pell, who was in his 30s and a priest at Ballarat at the time, denies the allegations.

The two swimmers, now men in their 50s, wanted to give evidence along with a third man who also reported Pell over conduct in the 1970s.

The third man told police that in 1975 or 1976, when he was 10, he was part of a game in the water at Lake Boga, near Swan Hill, on a family picnic when he slipped off Pell’s shoulders and made accidental contact with the then priest’s erect penis. Pell was alleged to have told the boy: “Don’t worry, it’s only natural.”

Like

Thanks for the link.
Pell’s underwhelmed reaction to the gravity of the allegations put to him in Rome by Victoria State police is very telling… of his likely guilt. He expresses no surprise, let alone shock, at the nature of the allegations, and extraordinarily little anger (which is what one would reasonably expect of an innocent person’s facing such terrible accusations).
George Pell committed those crimes; of this I have absolutely no doubt.
I believe that Pell was a psychopath. Psychopaths tend to highly reckless behaviour (to act on the spur of the moment), and this would explain the utter ‘madness’ of his opportunistic offending against the two choir boys inside St Patrick’s Cathedral, in Melbourne.
I don’t want any soul to be in Hell, but, if Pell did not repent his evil conduct, then…

There’s no doubting that the late Cardinal, like others covered up clerical abuse. That’s documented. The sexual abuse allegations were not credible or sustainable. The Cardinal had the original court judgment overturned. It was unsafe. It was unprovable. It was an injustice. Even some very anti church media commentators and high profile legal experts thought that the accusations and the manner of the treatment of the Cardinal were unconvincing and that a witch hunt was created against him. They observed that so many aspects were contradictory, confusing, incredulous and maliciously created. Justice was done for the Cardinal in the end. May God rest his good soul.

Like

Outside of the specific charges that he was tried on, there have been numerous allegations of Pell’s inappropriate behaviour over years. For example, in swimming pools and changing rooms where he was an exhibitionist and strutted around naked in front of youngsters. There is definitely a mismatch between Pell’s arrogant orthodoxy and his personal behaviour, which is no surprise when he in all likelihood was a repressed and self-denying homosexual. It’s classic denial and transference behaviour. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to know that.

Liked by 1 person

10:25 And the way the faithful keep stressing that his conviction collapsed yet again shows they don’t understand abuse or accept the need for effective safeguarding.
The fact of all these allegations and the fact some of them even got as far as trial means
1. He should have faced an internal church investigation
2. If found credible (likely if any of them got to trial) he should never have been in public ministry or near a child for the rest of his life.

George Pell was a product of a triumphalist, arrogant, absolutist Church and theology that saw itself as in contradiction and opposition to the rest of the world and people, and spent its time fighting culture and morality wars. The end result was a Church that was mired in corruption and abuse because its energy went in to protecting its reputation, and a Church that alienated people who had come to a different understanding about themselves, their families and their relationships, and how they wanted to live their lives. He was a dinosaur and well past his sell by date. There are still plenty like him around the place, people like Timothy Broglio in the USA, newly elected chairman of the US bishops. Francis has a different agenda, and I will go with that.

Pell’s conviction in Victoria, Australia, was overturned purely on a legal technicality. He was not re-tried and declared innocent.
The Victoria high court’s declaration that Pell’s conviction was unsafe was NOT also a declaration that he was innocent; the statements do NOT mean the same.
Cathbots ignore this distinction. It isn’t a nuance, so they have no moral excuse for their repeated attempts at deflecting from the truth about the High Court’s ruling.
Were I freed on such a technicality, I should not rejoice, but feel extremely uncomfortable that I had, to use a modern idiom, ‘got away with it by the skin of my teeth’. Perhaps the cognitive dissonance in Pell’s mind between these facts (freed, but not declared innocent) ‘did for him’ in the end.

Yep, he wasn’t found not guilty. His conviction was quashed because of legal technicalities. But, remember, he had been found guilty ! I think he knew that he had only just got away with it, as he has lots of stuff during his life, and I think he went back to Rome because he knew that life in Australia was going to be too difficult, where people knew the distinction between guilty, not guilty and legal technicality. And since the one certainty was that he had been found guilty, it was easier for him to be in Rome where people were inclined to forget that and give him the benefit of the doubt. I think Pell was walking around with a huge burden of guilt, self-loathing and unhappiness. It will be that which did for him in the end.

Pell’s views on synodality etc can be read in The Spectator, courtesy of Damian Thompson: https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/the-catholic-church-must-free-itself-from-this-toxic-nightmare/ You might need a subscription though. Anyhow, two take aways screaming out from this. Firstly, the number of times Pell goes on about homosexuality. LGBTQ etc. Seems like he’s got a real bee in his bonnet about the issue. Indications I think that it’s something very personal to him. Perhaps a self-loathing and self-denying homosexual himself, which is usually why people like Pell go on so much about homosexuality ? Secondly, he clearly thinks that the truth about faith, religion, the Church etc. should be in the hands of bishops, those whose job it is to decide what is and what is not. Well, a bit late for that, given that along with priests, bishops have been shown to be untruthful coverup merchants whose main aim in life is not the preservation of the True Faith, but covering their own arses and reputations at the expense of the young and vulnerable. Why should we give them such trust and pre-eminence again ? I prefer to trust a synod of all Christians rather than bishops presuming to tell us what to do, thank you.

That being a Romanist priest hasn’t prevented either you or your fellow priests from having a relationship with God is undoubtedly true. The god of your relationship is, in fact, the Romanist institution to which you, and your fellow priests, each knowingly swore obedience and allegiance at the moral travesty you call ‘ordination’, but which, actually, was an open and semi-public, ritualised betrayal of Jesus Christ.

However I am pleased that in this case victims will now be heard in open court, having been denied their right to do so by the abscondence for three years by their alleged perpetrator. Victims of abuse and seeking justice for them should always be our priority. However it is difficult for victims to achieve justice when their accused abscond and are protected by a so called Christian organisation which is more interested in self preservation. I am pleased that the justice denied to victims will now take its course. Call it being smug if you will. I couldn’t care less

I cannot imagine Vincent Nicholls having much time for Eamon Martin; he is pretty contemptuous of his own brother bishops in E & W, though with good reason it has to be said. Even when still at Birmingham he was very much the man to go to for the press, since CMOC was such a hopeless waffler. I’m curious that even he is increasingly out of his depth and wrong-footed given the scale of the crisis – being a sound company man can no longer hold it together.

Abusing children whilst pretending to be a Christian leader is an act of blasphemy agai st God himself. These morally corrupt creatures need dealt with by the law of the land not by their church which facilitated and covered up their abuse in the first place. In fact anyone in their church who covered up abuse should also be charged with withholding evidence (Cardinal Brady comes to mind) . Filthy corrupt bastards is what they are. Who in their right mind, let alone someone who professes to follow Christ, would even dream of either carrying out abuse or actively cover it up. And we are supposed to trust these people to dispense justice according to canon law! Who the hell do they think they are? I am right. Off with their tallywackers or feed these morally corrupt scum to the lions. Then they can abuse no one else. At all costs children must be protected from these sub human low lifes

The problem with the Pell case is it appears to be a conviction based on a written statement of a now deceased witness who obviously can’t be cross examined and the testimony of another witness without any evidence, is that enough to be found guilty ? Anyone could be accused in this way, the specific details of the abuse are of course another matter and whether there are contradictions in Pells personality and outlook but that’s also not evidence.

active as a gay man are incompatible. No amount of faith or courage is going to square the circle. If a priest is trying to reconcile both then the only answer is to stop acting out and be faithful to your sacred promise, or leave and find contentment outside of the church. I did the later. I would have been celebrated my
silver jubilee had I remained but would have been deeply unhappy and probably found it too difficult to readjust to secular life if I had left later. It took me 5 years to find my feet and to accept myself and to come out to my family after I left. All I found was unconditional acceptance and love. A car, a roof over your head, no bills to worry about, and adulation from a few old ladies will never make up for true freedom and inner peace.

I know of a good priest who was much loved by his congregation despite having his own flaws. He was a chain smoking alcoholic that would often have to be put in a taxi home after too much whisky but he still managed to serve the parish all year long despite being hungover or tired. Was always present in the community and always knew his parishioners. He attended a wedding I was invited to once and got so drunk he passed out and wet himself, but nobody ever beat him with a stick as he was a great peoples man with unfortunate issues.

We rightly pay reverence to many, many saints who took up arms in support of their people and in the name of God. Popes – Saints, at that – throughout history waged wars in defence of the Papal States. Saint Ignatius served in the Spanish military, Joan of Arc, Andrew the Tribune – all served their people and God through wars.

THE MISSED OPPORTUNITY THAT WILL DEFINE THE LEGACY OF CARDINAL GEORGE PELL
Sydney Morning Herald [Sydney, New South Wales, Australia]
January 13, 2023
By Chip Le Grand
“Instead of flights of angels, the death of Cardinal George Pell provoked another roiling culture war to sing the Cardinal to his rest. It’s what Australia’s most prominent church figure would have wanted. The only certainty, other than death, is that arguments about Pell’s ecclesiastic and cultural legacy will rage for years after his remains are interred in the crypt beneath Sydney’s St Mary’s Cathedral.”
β€˜He made a decision to pursue the path that would protect the interests of the church.’

George Pell was an innocent man. As a basic principle of justice, he was innocent until proven guilty. He was not proven guilty. Therefore he was innocent. When a court declares a verdict unsafe, it returns a person to the legal state they inhabited prior to trial: innocence.
As for the cover ups, that is a different matter. Pell was an institutional mind who protected the church’s reputation above all else β€” above even the rights of children to protection. For that, his moral reputation was, and is, irreparably damaged.
