The decision to have him lie in state in the Cathedral in Sydney, have a Mass attended by thousands, and then buried in the Cathedral crypt on February 2nd seems to me to be unnecessarily insensitive to victims of clerical sexual abuse.
George Pell was not found INNOCENT by the Australian High Court.
His conviction was found to be UNSAFE.
Total innocence and an unsafe conviction are two very different things.
Pell admitted himself that he had failed victims as a bishop and archbishop.
But right-wing Catholics all over the world now want Pell to be regarded as a Saint and white martyr.
The truth is that Pell was a typical RC bishop – arrogant, self willed, in denial of truth, and probably absolutely cynical.
I think that, like Keith O’Brien, Pell should have had a private funeral and burial.
Now, Pell is being used by right-wing RC clerics and laity as a SAINT of the right – to promote the Latin Mass, to oppose the Francis Papacy, and to attack the Synodal Path and bring us all back to the 16th century.
I think it’s deeply worrying that a man who was accused of paedophilia and not found innocent by a jury of his peers should be hailed like this – especially when he covered up abuse.
It’s a perfect example of the craziness of the vicious war between the Catholic right and left.

Pell WAS found guilty, unanimously, by a jury in Victoria State; the verdict was upheld by the appeals court there. It was only the High Court in Victoria that ruled Pell’s conviction unsafe; it did NOT declare Pell innocent, because it had not the authority to do so.
The worldly funeral and honour the Catholic Church in Australia is proposing for Pell’s remains insults the victims of rape, and it’s cover-up, by Catholic clergy. It is sending out a distinct message to the world: we stand by, and eulogise, men like Pell. Fuck the victims of Catholic priests!

The Australian Supreme Court issued a rare unanimous verdict in favour of quashing the allegations, all seven Supreme Court judges ruling for the same reasons that the Cardinal should be regarded as innocent.
He did not, as some have had it ‘get off on a technicality’. On the contrary, the charges were quashed because they simply did not meet the basic legal test of withstanding reasonable doubt.

You would have thought that Georg and the the domestic community there who have looked after Benedict should be allowed some time to breath and grieve ? Even Social Services wouldn’t be kicking people out of a house so quickly after the death of the leaseholder. As to what Georg should do next, well, just dumping him on a diocese when he hasn’t really been anywhere else or had any other experience than the rarified atmosphere of the Vatican for decades, seems a little unfair to the diocese. I think he is in to his late 60s now, and I believe that he has some health problems with his kidneys, so why should he not retire somewhere and live quietly and prayerfully, and just relax ? He doesn’t need to be elevated, he doesn’t need to be pushed around. Mind you, he also doesn’t need to publish a book that settles old scores, like Harry. If he is going to do he needs to quietly and gracefully.

Pell should be laid to rest quietly with the minimum of fuss and ceremony. Yes, his conviction was quashed and his supporters think that the suffering he endured should be publicised by a grand funeral to emphasis what a great man and martyr he was. On the other side, there will be plenty of people who were hurt when his conviction was crushed, because they believed that he was guilty, and for them such a public display of mourning for Pell will be hurtful. For both, I believe, a quiet, dignified, minimum pomp and ceremony funeral would be best. I’m surprised that Pell didn’t stipulate this himself, but then considering what a culture wars warrior, in your face, argumentative, unbending, arrogant, over confident person, who enjoyed confrontation, he was in life then I guess there is no surprise that he is like that in death. It’s very sad and disappointing. Maybe a good stint in Purgatory will humble him a little bit if prison didn’t.

I am flabbergasted, given the white heat of controversy surrounding Cardinal Pell, that someone actually decided, free of duress, that the cardinal should have a public, and very high profile, wake, Requiem, and funeral. Are they intentionally turning a controversy into a crisis, the Catholic Church ? Because this is what will happen, given the incendiary public feeling about Cardinal Pell. GP could have been state of the art if in 1996, on acceding to all the church power anyone needs – that of metropolitan – he had told his assembled auxiliaries and most suffragans that he was shopping Little (predecessor) and Mulkearns (suffragan), on the basis of the inside knowledge from which he had been kept out of the loop.
This would have forestalled his strange subsequent career in finance – which the big man’s “rival” gangs collude to not reform – and the deliberately badly presented recent case (irrespective of its possible merits).
Perhaps he had been thought qualified to “support” the clergy as auxiliary in the first place, but he could have resigned relatively quietly early on if he thought the status wasn’t worth the further effort.
Did Jesus teach that true church power doesn’t consist in being marshalled around? Do Jesus’ teachings have objective existence outside Vatican city state parameters?

Cardinal Pell is a prime example of the totally unrepentant and arrogant abuse network that is the Roman Catholic Church. They do not practice what they preach. Not a credible organisation.

Everything related to this Mafia church is unsafe. Pell’s expensive and well connected lawyers discovered a legal loophole to have him released but the RCC are twisting the truth as usual in order to protect the Paedophile & paedophile protector, Cardinal Pell. He was not declared innocent, the decision made was based on it being an unsafe conviction. Big difference.

Funny how you’re all crowing that the civil authorities quashed Pell’s conviction.
If you’re going to do that you also have to accept that the civil authorities say abortion is allowed because their authority comes from God.

I can see why they opted to bury him in the crypt. 1) a gravestone in a cemetery would likely be vandalised, and 2) if more comes about him, then it’s easier to move him.

I knew today would be a good day for the ‘faithful’ ranting about yet another bishop who covered up abuse being ‘innocent’ and trying to distract elsewhere, today to the Birmingham 6.
Remember, RCs think the merits of the saints can be drawn on with indulgences and obviously think their huge amount of crime should be paid for by everyone else.
