H&N – BYRNE – SEX PARTY AT CATHEDRAL DURING LOCKDOWN.

PAT SAYS

It is good to see that the massive  BISHOP ROBERT BYRNE that first saw the light of day on this Blog has now hit the mainstream media – and hit it with a BANG !

The media is anxious to point out that there is no suggestion that Byrne was at the sex party.

I would not be so sure.

My clerical friends in the UK tell me that Byrne would, in the past, at least, have had no problems attending very gay. “parties.”

I have no doubt whatever that  BOBBY BYRNE is a very close friend of our Dorothy’s. In fact, I would say he is the aboriginal friend of Dorothy.

He is also a member of the Oratory Congregation – a well-known religious refuge for odd, gay gentlemen.

His appointment as bishop of H&N was another nail in the coffin of papal infallibility.

He was made a bishop in the hysterical fog following the canonization of John Henry Newman.

Byrne should never have been a bishop.

He has no native intelligence, no sense of judgement, no presence, and no leadership qualities.

Now, he may very well find himself dismissed from the episcopal or even clerical state.

Robert – pride comes before a fall.

This won’t be the first time Robert has had complaints made against him. They would do well to look at his file in the provost’s desk in Oxford. It would make very interesting readying.

The likes of Robert Byrne and Tom Deenihan should never have been appointed to episcopal office. The Dicastery for Bishops must also investigate Tom Deenihan’s mishandling of Silverstream and his morally reprehensible treatment of Dom Benedict Andersen, the true Prior of Silverstream.

When I read this article today from another source I felt such anger. If this is true – and it’s appearing that way – this man should never have been consecrated as a Bishop. It’s an awful indictment of this man and all who attended a party during lockdown. Politicians all over the place were forced to resign for attending parties during lockdown. Now this man has brought the Church, priesthood and his tenure as Bishop into a deeper moral and spiritual abyss. There needs to be a full accounting for this party and heads shiukd roll. Considering the spotlight in the clerical sexual abuse scandals and church cover ups for the past 30 years, it’s incomprehensible that any cleric or cathedral worker would contemplate
disreputable behaviour of any kind so wilfully. Moral shame on all of them. The fuller story about goings on at this cathedral are horrifying. May God forgive those who are responsible.

But, there’s nothing to say that Byrne attended these parties or even knew about them. At least until well after the fact. It was McCoy who was organising them. Read the article, carefully, and then you might get your facts right ! Bobby Byrne has had to move on for other reasons, perhaps including his management of the fall out when he knew about these parties. But, he definitely was not a party to these parties !

11:18 Abbot Richard Purcell certainly knows how to throw a memorable party. Some clerics still wish they didn’t remember.

McCoy must have had a screw loose if he invited ‘parishioners’ to a sex party in the clergy quarters of H&N cathedral and thought that somehow it would not come out. It sounds as though he was also involved in some other questionable stuff, such that the police became involved, then his unfortunate suicide. Bobby Byrne’s personal involvement in all of this looks limited, but his managerial / safeguarding role may well have been seriously lacking. However, I suspect that this in itself would not have been enough for Bobby to be pushed in to resigning. I think there is something else, probably centred on his own behaviour with someone or something, that finally saw him pushed. All in all, it is pretty serious and very sad that H&N has to suffer all this stuff and publicity. And where is + Bobby these days ? Any sightings ? His Cong Orat mates will be very protective, so I imagine he’s been whisked off to one of their places and is being kept out of sight and sound. More time for prayer, then….. !

The Oratorians in England got their biggest boost when Pope Benedict met Pushkin the Birmingham Oratory cat, it got more coverage than St John Henry getting canonised. I’ve been told by a diocesan safeguarding officer that kiddy fiddlers hate cats because they can’t be controlled, so if a priest, monastery or clerical institution has a cat they’re probably OK. Any evidence to the contrary? Anyway cats have been popular in monasteries and among clerics from early days, and one of the reasons is because they are invulnerable to sexual assault or persuasion -which is why they are the only female animal allowed on Mount Athos. The historical sexual problem there has been goats. Preoccupations with zoophilia do feature in the monastic literature, for good reason; for example, the nunnery of Santa Bibiana in Rome was suppressed by the pope in 1439 for alleged donkey bothering apparently, although probably black magic also had something to do with it (the latter definitely at the nunnery San Ciriaco on the Corso, which was shut down four years earlier and demolished -no donkeys there, it was in the centre of the city).

You forgot to mention that Robert Byrne is also very, very lazy. He loves his bed, and his siesta. Oh, he can talk the talk, and will sound as though he is engaged and is going to push things forward. But, then nothing happens. He was awful when in Brum, and I think Longley was delighted when he was kicked upstairs. I guess he will settle in to some genteel Oratorian life, saying Mass, reading the newspapers, lunching, siesta, a little light walking, tea, and then a quiet evening before back to bed. With the odd foray out to the Royal Opera House for some cultural diversion. Nice life if you can get it.

There is also the possibility it may have been a Sex Toy Party, similar to a Tupperware demonstration. “The Oratory Congregation – a well-known religious refuge for odd, gay gentlemen.” Good description. Nice Paul Crevasse and his infatuation with a young man, officially non-sexual non-genital, of course ! The disappeared Birmingham Three in order to get them out of the way before Benedict visited. What had they done ? Makes you wonder ? The disappearing reappearing Fr Daniel. What really happened there ? Even Newman and Ambrose and their intense friendship and sharing a grave. I just wish they would be honest about it all, and not be so paranoid that they have to go all moralistic and orthodox about all these things. And judgemental about people who are more honest about themselves and who they are. It is the way the vast majority of Oratorians are. ‘Fess up ! Then they would be more authentic and have more integrity. Rather than hiding, denying, transferring – well, we are not fooled.

Yes, precisely. This is not what Nichols or Longley or any of the others want to see in the headlines so soon after the excoriating filleting of them by IICSA. Even if the timelines look at bit wonky. It’s the optics, the headlines, and perception that count. I suspect that this will be the last nail in Nichols’ coffin, probably Longley’s as well, and Rome will be wanting to get the old guard who presided over all this imbroglio out pretty soon. Then to put in a new guard, God help them. Where they will get anybody of quality I do not know. Anyone worth their salt will avoid such poisoned chalices like the plague, and so they will end up with the third rate (eg Collins of EA). I suspect even Cockroche won’t fancy coming back to this mess and will be quite content to stay in Rome and fiddle around with the liturgy. The fact that the H&N business has gone to rat shit, and it was on Nichols’ and Longley’s watch, McMahon’s even, the focus will come to rest on them as the ‘responsabili’. Byrne will be sidelined and airbrushed out, but the blame will come to rest with the seniors currently in the E&W hierarchy. If they knew what was going on they should have acted, if they didn’t know what was going on they damned well should have known. It’s called leadership. They will not come out of this well. If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen…..

An investigation should be carried on bishops and clergy who have ‘intense relationships’ because it comprises them and clouds their judgement.

No one challenged Conry and he would flaunt his special friendships by attending meetings holding hands with his new beau.

Elsie and Carmel is hugely problematic and he makes a complete tit of himself as he consults her about everything and is weirdly submissive around her.

Nursie and Dominic is getting embarrassing and tongues are beginning to wag – clearly has a soft spot for his live in facttotum who surely should be running a parish by now not being Nursies Nurse!!

The list is long and the problem of intense relationship is ongoing and a real threat to objective pastoral care of the whole of Gods people not just the chose ones.

Eddie Clare and Tim Menezes used to be inseparable but Richard Walker has stepped in since Eddie flounced off.

The optics are poor and everyone knows the culture of droit du seigneur is rampant in Catholic circles also known as Catholic cliques.

Byrne had a thing for McCoy and Gardiner – he liked his men twisted and compromised- power you see, Tubby Byrne is addicted to power.

Eddie Clare – I’m not sure he flounced off, I think he was suspended for something or other, probably some inappropriateness. Just like John Gilbert, and many others about the diocese. Longley and Dominic – are becoming a bit of a joke about the place. Some sort of odd dynamic going on there. Nichols and Carmel – has been on the go for decades, and no doubt they will go off in to retirement soon together. Remember the caravan incident when he was in Brum ? I doubt if Carmel will be heading back to the Selly Park motherhouse. Conry – was shocking, and they all knew. Why did they not do something ?

Church is for worship not gyrating – Zambia Catholic bishop
Kennedy Gondwe
BBC News, Lusaka
A Catholic bishop in northern Zambia has urged his congregants to avoid “gyrating” too much during mass because such dancing may encourage other people to sin.
Ndola Bishop Benjamin Phiri says he is concerned about the manner in which some worshippers dance during Mass.
He has called for regulation and self-control on how people express themselves in church.
“The dancing part of the church should be regulated. It should constitute worship. The dance and rhythm that we have in a pub should be different from the one that we have in the church, otherwise in the end, the two will become one,” he said.
He said singing and dancing in church was not for entertainment purposes and should be different from the dance in pubs and nightclubs, state-owned Zambia Daily newspaper reported over the weekend.
“Do not gyrate too much because at the end of the day, someone will start admiring the other and then, they will end up having thoughts which are not of worship,” he added.
Bishop Phiri said liturgy in church should not be turned into entertainment because the church was meant for worship. unquote

Bernard Longley got much to answer for.
How is it that he allowed Robert to live at seminary. He also promoted active gay priest to bishops conference…

I suspect this has caused discomfort among the bishops’ of England and Wales. It makes Conry’s philandering with women seem mild. However, who completes the terna for these appointments? Those completing the questionnaires sent to the nuncio must have been economical with the truth. I remember hearing that the staff at Oscott all received the questionnaires for Patrick Kelly at breakfast, and he was oblivious when he walked into the pransorium for breakfast. Seminary rectors are usually a safe bet, but that may not be the case after the revelations about a Rector of Oscott and PB JP Lyttle last week.

@3.30pm Who is the Rector of Oscott you have in mind? Egan was not Rector. To whom, then, do you refer? This blog requires accuracy.

Bishop Pat knows the answer, as does JPL, the former Rector and contemporaries of JPL. I am sure it will come out, as these things do.

Yes, alas they do. Its the breakfast room used by the faculty. Maurice had it decorated with ghastly William Morris hand painted wallpaper.

Bishop Pat – it really is rotten that you are not credited with breaking this worldwide story. A lot of journalists will be earning from your efforts.

Those words are quite comforting, not only to myself, but no doubt to other victims and survivors.
Bishop Pat, your blog has given great light and comfort to many who have been hurt and cast aside.
God bless you, Bishop Pat x
